APRIL 2: 2 HOURS, 17 MINUTES BARABBAS 1961) Epic account of the thief Barabbas, who was spared crucifixion when Pilate manipulated the crowd into to pardoning him, rather than Jesus. Struggling with his spirituality, Barabbas goes through many ordeals leading him to the gladiatorial arena, where he tries to win his freedom and confront his inner demons, ultimately becoming a follower of the man who was crucified in his place.
******************** APRIL 9: 2 HOURS, 7 MINUTES THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST (2004) This film depicts the final hours of Jesus Christ, starting from His prayers in the Garden of Gethsemane and His betrayal at the hands of Judas Iscariot. It goes on to show the trials He endured under Pontius Pilate and King Herod as well as the torture and ridicule He suffered in between. Once the death sentence is pronounced, He carries a heavy wooden cross to Golgotha amidst throngs of jeering citizens and horrendous beatings, while a few citizens do what they can to help Him. Throughout this time, we are shown memories from His past with His mother and Disciples, where He gives His teachings. Finally, He is crucified, dies, and is buried, but resurrects from the dead on the third day.

SCRIPTURE INSIGHTS WEEKDAY READINGS
In today’s First Reading, the prophet Ezekiel delivers God’s words to his covenant people, using a graphic metaphor to illustrate God’s desire and power to give them life. The graves of the dead will be opened and the dead will rise up. Furthermore, all those in exile will be brought safely home. By these acts the people will know that their God has power over life and death. The psalmist intertwines a plea for redemption with an affirmation of trust in the Lord’s mercy. The psalm’s penitential tone makes it particularly fitting for Lent. What might “the depths” mean? That vagueness allows the psalm to fit the needs of any person, for at times any of us might feel helpless and overwhelmed — wanting to cry out. Can we join in the psalmist’s trust in the compassion of the Lord? For Paul, the human body is a temple of the Lord, a positive image. It is also fragile and susceptible to the opposite of the spirit, a negative image. When Paul uses the word “flesh,” he doesn’t mean literally our physical bodies. Rather, by “flesh,” he means that aspect of human nature that is subject to sinfulness and corruptibility. But the life of the spirit has been given to all who believe in the risen Lord. In fact, it is through the Resurrection of the Lord that a new spiritual life is even possible. John’s story of the raising of Lazarus offers us hope and consolation in the face of death. The grief of Jesus, Martha, and Mary shows us that the Lord understands and shares in our human grief at the death of our loved ones. At the same time, Jesus teaches that, through the power his Father has given him, he has power over death. Ultimately he will teach us through his own Death and Resurrection that we can trust in the promise of eternal life. What examples of death-to-life do you find in the readings? What details in the Lazarus story do you find comforting? How do you understand Jesus’ statement, “I am the
resurrection and the life”?
