By Peter F. Baranay Barely 40 days after the completion of Automechanika 2010, the ABRO family gathered in Las Vegas for the AAPEX Show. Although few ABRO distributors attended the two shows, nearly the entire ABRO team was at both. And busy we were – hosting dozens of ABRO distributors from around the world, meet- ing with suppliers, and entertaining at some great places including the Centurion Penthouse of Caesars Palace. Fifteen years ago, in 1995, ABRO first came to Las Vegas for the AAPEX Show. We had no actual booth on the floor of the Exhibit, instead utilizing an over- sized room at Caesars Palace as our headquarters. I say “over sized room” as a comparison to what we have today, it surely would not have been con- sidered a “suite”. Barely 40 days after the completion of Automechanika 2010, the ABRO familygathered in Las Vegas for the AAPEX Show. selection of appetizers from the roomservice menu and “yours truly” wasthe bartender. They were ratherhumble beginnings in comparison tothe events we now host. Over theyears at Caesars Palace, we movedinto progressively larger rooms until2000 when we hosted our events inthe two story classic suite.

In 2000, the same year we moved tothe much larger suite, ABRO openedour first booth on the floor of theAAPEX Exhibit Center. It was arather humble booth of 10’ deep by20’ wide.

A few years later, we expanded to a 20’ x 20’ and rapidly grew to a 20’ x 30’. Although we are clearly

not “done”, the booth we unveiled in 2009 was the largest to date at 20’ x 40’ with two private conferencerooms, casual meeting places and adedicated area for distributors to logon, check e-mails, and of course placenew orders.

Fifteen years have gone by in a blinkof an eye, and over the years, we

have welcomed new distributors and new suppliers.However, many things have remained constant: ABRO’scommitment toward our distributors and our suppliers,a sense of team work and the dedication to expandingABRO’s global presence.

Over these past 15 years there have been great memo-ries from the show. For those who were with us atour Wednesday night event, we prepared a time lineincluding photos from 1995 through 2009. For thoseunable to attend, we have posted this on our website.

Dinner at the Palm

Once again Mario Manta and Stan Santos entertained ABRO’s Latin American distributors with a fabulous dinner atone of Las Vegas’ premiere restaurants – The Palm.

“I love our annual dinner at The Palm” gushed Mario after the event, “it’s such a great location and it has a surpris-ing amount in common with ABRO. It started out as a little family restaurant just about the same time as ABROwas started and now it is a name respected worldwide – just like ABRO”.

The dinner was attended by the ABRO distributors from Costa Rica, Panama, Mexico, Guatemala, Paraguay,Puerto Rico & Peru.

While the Latin American contingent dined elsewhere in Las Vegas with Mario and Stan,the rest of the ABRO sales force – Tim Demarais, Sonny Sohrab and Mike Molnar – dis-cussed future expansion plans with several other distributors over a scrumptious meal atthe world famous Spago restaurant. “On behalf of the entire ABRO team,I would like to welcome you to ourannual appreciation dinner tonight.ABRO has the opportunity to cele-brate our success not only with ourdistributors who are in the marketplace on a daily basis, but also withour suppliers who do an outstandingjob creating the products soldthroughout the world.

As we gather here tonight in 2010, I am struck by the contrast of thisnight two years ago when we cele-brated in this same spectacularvenue. It was two short years ago in2008 that the world seemed poisedon the brink of a financial abyss andthe signs of a financial meltdownwere everywhere: banks were fail-ing, currencies were plummeting,confidence in government was erod-ing, joblessness in the U.S. was soar-ing. You will recall, that when Ispoke two years ago, I made a com-mitment to all ABRO distributorsthat they would continue to receivethe financial and product supportthat they had come to expect duringthe “good times”. I commentedthat no one who met their obliga-tions and remained committed toABRO would see anything but unbri-dled support from ABRO.

You did your part and ABRO didtheirs. My compliments to all of youand all of you are stronger todaythan two years ago. You deserve around of applause.

On the flipside, ABRO remainedcommitted to our suppliers. Unlikemany other companies during thatera, ABRO did not arbitrarily takelonger payment terms, or createcharge backs for no apparent rea-son, or reduce purchases. ABRO notonly persevered throughout this diffi-cult period, but we thrived. All ofyou deserve another round ofapplause for your achievements dur-ing the last 24 months.

As much as we enjoy sharing wherewe have come from, ABRO does notdwell on the past, we are focused onthe future. However, for those thathave not had the opportunity toreview 15 years of Las Vegas memo-ries here at Caesars Palace, I referyou to the banner in the hallwaywhich shows some much younger,and thinner members, of the ABRO

staff over the past years here atCaesars and the AAPEX Show.

As all of you know, the outstandingsuccess that ABRO has had through-out the world has led to the chal-lenges of the illegal counterfeiting ofABRO products. In just the last 90days, ABRO has had resounding suc-cess against these criminals:

In Egypt, during the month of August,we made major raids in four cities.

A total of 88 people were arrested –three of whom were major importersand who now face up to a year injail. Over 45,000 counterfeits wereseized and will be destroyed.Although many of the 88 arrestedwere released within a few days, 51 were convicted and will serve sixmonths and 12 will serve a year inprison.

But don’t let our success in Egyptblind you to our success in China,where in during the last two months,we’ve done raids on two majorwholesalers of counterfeits. Over64,000 counterfeit items wereseized and will be destroyed. Two ofthe cases have been turned intocriminal investigations.

In Ukraine, during the month ofAugust, raids took place in 14 sepa-rate market places located in 8 dif-ferent cities. We had a recentaction in Saudi Arabia where raids

on 9 shops resulted in arrests andthe confiscation of 125,000 items.

The total body count in the last 90days: Over 100 arrested and aquarter of a million cases confiscat-ed and destroyed.

These relentless pursuits of thosewho infringe the ABRO name willcontinue. And while we here enjoythe sophisticated hospitality of Las Vegas, ABRO’s Director of

Intellectual Property, Bill Mansfield,along with our Beijing based attor-ney, and a contingent of high levelChinese officials are touring the hin-terlands of Western China setting upa program to interdict contrabandthat has previously flowed intoRussia. ABRO has been successfulin tracking down these criminals andwe will continue to do so even if itmeans traveling over two thousandkilometers from Beijing to Urumchi,China!

We just want the counterfeiters toknow one thing; ABRO will hunt youdown and strike back. Go rip offsomeone else.

As odd as it may seem, counterfeit-ing is a sign of success. It showsthat you, our distributors, have builtABRO into a brand name so power-ful – so valuable – that people see itas worth stealing. So we happilyundertake the fight against the

counterfeiters in order to ensurethat the brand name you’ve builtstays strong.

Last year ABRO celebrated our 70thAnniversary and we created a timeline of important events. Webrought it back for this year in caseyou did not have an opportunity tosee it.

As is our tradition, I would like towelcome those members of theABRO family who have not beenhere before.

First, I’d like to thank the largegroup of Caesars Palace people whowork so closely (and in the back-ground) with us.

December 14, 2010 was a red letter datefor the Coscharis Group as they inaugurat-ed the Grand Opening of the newCoscharis Automotive Center in Abuja,Nigeria which is the largest AutomotiveShowroom in Africa.

This new, ultra-modern office complexwill feature the various automotive agen-cies that the Coscharis Group is handlingon an exclusive basis including BMW,Jaguar, Range Rover and Ford. Executivesfrom all of these respected companiesattended the event as well as the Presidentof ABRO Industries, Peter Baranay, and

Vice President, Tim Demarais.Furthermore, ranking politicians through-out Nigeria including key state Governorsas well as high profile Nigerian BusinessExecutives were all at the Grand Opening.

This state-of-the-art facility will takeCoscharis to a new level in the NigerianAutomotive Industry which certainly willboost the sales of our ABRO automotivechemicals throughout Nigeria.

We heartily congratulate Dr. Madukaand his executive team for their vision increating such a beautiful structure in Abuja,the capital city of Nigeria.

Counterfeit Update

ABRO Testifies BeforeU.S. Congress

Recently, ABRO’s Director of IntellectualProperty testified before the U.S.Congress.

On July 21, 2010, William Mansfieldappeared before the U.S. House ofRepresentative’s Small BusinessCommittee. The Committee was holdinghearings entitled “The Impact of IntellectualProperty on Entrepreneurship and JobCreation.”

William was able to speak to the committeeabout ABRO’s experiences in creating,growing and protecting its corporate intel-lectual property. In his testimony, he out-lined the extensive steps that ABRO hastaken over the years to protect its name inthe marketplace.

He was also able to present the case thatstrong intellectual property rights areessential for small and medium sized com-panies, such as ABRO, to compete againstlarge corporations. While a very largecompany with multiple brands can afford toallow a certain amount of counterfeitingwithout suffering too much damage, small-er companies cannot be as lax in their anti-counterfeiting actions. Any attempt todamage the reputation of a company likeABRO must be treated as the seriousthreat that it is.

This is the third time that a representativeof ABRO has been asked to speak beforethe United States Congress and cementsABRO’s position as a major voice inAmerica on the side of small businessesand brand owners.

Peter Baranay, President of ABRO, paid a visit in November 2010 toPanama to meet with Tito Herrera, owner of Distribuidora de Aditivos.A newly built, well stocked warehouse and three custom designeddelivery trucks made it possible for Distribuidora de Aditivos to con-tinue their stronghold on the Panamanian market.

ABRO El Salvador recently hosted a popular booth at a hardwaretrade show in San Salvador. The ABRO distributor’s presentationdrew in a large number of potential customers and is expected tohelp their business grow greatly in the coming year.

Also in October of 2010Dr. Kodjo of AKOA visitedour corporate facility forthe first time. Dr. Kodjohas been doing an excel-lent job in selling ourABRO Masking Tape inTogo and visited our cor-porate offices to see howhe could expand the salesof our other ABRO prod-ucts in Togo.

SAUDI ARABIAIn October of 2010, we had the pleasure of receiving Mr. Alhashim andMr. Kumar of Al Hoda Company ofDammam, Saudi Arabia. Al Hoda hasbeen selling our ABRO PVC Cement inthe Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for thepast seven years and has done anexcellent job in penetrating the market.

We certainly do hope to increase ourbusiness with Al Hoda in 2011 as thecompany has been quite aggressive inselling our PVC Cement to the contrac-tors in Saudi Arabia taking advantageof the recent building boom in theKingdom.

NIGERIAPeter Baranay and Tim Demarais recently welcomed over 50 visitors

from Nigeria to the ABRO World Headquarters in South Bend, Indiana.

The visitors, friends of the company through ABRO’s connection with

Nigerian ABRO distributor Coscharis and its owner, the prominent

philanthropist, Dr. Cosmas Maduka, stopped by on a tour of the United

States. While they were ABRO’s guests they were treated to dinner

and an evening of lively conversation with Peter and Tim. “That’s one

of the things I love about this company” said Peter, “you end up with

friends from all around the globe.”

Meet ABRO’s Staff

Please meet Dan Jacobs

Dan Jacobs joined ABRO as anintern in May of 2010. He works forand learns from ABRO’s CreativeDirector, Birgit Sommer. Dan is cur-rently studying for his Bachelor ofFine Arts degree in Industrial Designat the University of Notre Dame inSouth Bend, Indiana. He expects tograduate in May of 2011 and thenpredicts he will move to Chicago andwork designing high-tech products.

At the University of Notre Dame,Dan serves as the Photo Editor forthe student newspaper. In his sparetime, Dan enjoys traveling, art andmountain biking.

Since Dan joined us, he has beeninvolved in designing new productlabels, the Spanish Product Catalog,redesigning the ABRO website andassisting ABRO’s video team withthe new ABRO product videos.

ABRO Stays FitNo one can ever accuse ABROof standing still. As a company,our sales continue to climbevery year. And individually,members of the ABRO familykeep moving as well.

Guy Berkebile, the owner ofABRO supplier Guy Chemical,competed again in the IronmanWorld Championship in Hawaiithis year. Just like last year,Guy made us all proud with hisdetermination and athleticismas he swam, biked and ran hisway to the end of the grueling competition.

Guy wasn’t the only one pushing himself hard this year. ABRO’s own Sasan Sohrab completed hisfirst full triathlon as well. He competed in the annual Niles Triathlon which takes place nearChicago. Sonny made a great showing; finishing 9th for his age group and 40th overall.

Clearly, the competition will never catch ABRO napping.
