FIesOle e le FONDAZIONIPAesAggI culturAlIIl grande pubblico conosce Fiesole per la bellezza dei suoi pae-saggi, per le sue colline punteggiate da ville e giardini rigogliosi, per il fascino del teatro romano, l’abbondanza delle sue opere d’arte, i panorami mozzafiato, ma sono in pochi a sapere della ricchezza e della meraviglia delle istituzioni culturali italiane e straniere sparse nel suo territorio.
Con le visite che proponiamo intendiamo, quindi, aggiungere un ulteriore importante elemento alla conoscenza di Fiesole e del suo ampio e variegato patrimonio.
Novità del 2013 è la visita alla sede della Georgetown University presso Villa Le Balze.
culturAl lANDscAPesFIesOle AND Its FOuNDAtIONsMost people know Fiesole for its beautiful scenery, its hills dotted with villas and luxuriant gardens, the fascination of its Roman Theatre abundance of works of art and the breathtaking views - but only a few know about the treasures and wonders of the Italian and foreign Cultural institutions within its territory.
The guided visits we propose are aimed at adding another important element to the knowledge of Fiesole and its extensive and varied heritage.

Grandissimo artista che, ad alto livello, ha saputo spaziare nella cultura letteraria, artistica e musicale del ‘900 diventando uno dei massimi protagonisti e rappresentanti dell’Avanguardie Sto-riche. La Fondazione Primo Conti ha sede nella quattrocentesca Villa “Le Coste” che per molti anni fu l’abitazione e lo studio del Maestro. La Fondazione è sorta nel 1980 come Centro di Documentazione e Ricerche sulle Avanguardie Storiche per vo-lere dello stesso Primo Conti come realizzazione del suo sogno “di conservare il ricordo e la testimonianza dei più importanti movimenti novatori del Novecento”. Il Centro si divide in tre se-zioni: il Museo delle opere di Primo Conti, l’Archivio e lo Studio.
Il Museo raccoglie sessantatre dipinti e centosessantatre dise-gni dell’artista fiorentino che coprono un arco cronologico che va dal 1911 al 1985. Nell’Archivio, che si trova al piano superiore della Villa, sono conservati numerosi fondi che costituiscono la sezione documentaria della fondazione e che appartennero ai protagonisti della scena culturale italiana del primo novecento, Papini, Carocci, Pea, Sanminiatelli. In quello che era lo studio del Maestro oggi si svolgono incontri di studio, congressi, labo-ratori didattici ed anche riunioni conviviali.

This truly great, top class artist, was at home in the cultural lite-rary, artistic and musical world of the twentieth century, and so became one of the most important protagonists and representa-tives of the Historical Avant-garde movement. The Primo Conti Foundation has its seat in the fifteenth century Villa “Le Coste” which for many years was the home and studio of the Maestro.The Foundation came into being in 1980 as a Centre for Do-cumentation and Research on historical Avant-garde, on the wishes of Primo Conti himself, as the realization of his dream “to keep the memory and testimony of the most important innovative movements of the twentieth century”. The Centre is divided into three sections: the Museum with the works of
Primo Conti, the Archive and the Studio.The Museum houses sixty-three paintings and one hundred and sixty-three drawings by the Florentine artist, covering a time span from 1911 to 1985. The Archives, on the upper floor of the Villa, hold numerous records which constitute the documentary section of the foundation and which belong to protagonists of the Italian cultural scene at the beginning of the twentieth century, Papini, Carocci, Pea and Sanminiatelli. Nowadays, the Studio of the Maestro is used for studio meetings, conferences, didactic circles and also convivial meetings.

Villa Le Balze, sede dell’Università è situata quasi dirimpetto a Villa Medici. Fu costruita tra il 1911 ed il 1913 su progetto di Cecil Pinsent e Geoffrey Scott per Charles Augustus Strong, ricco americano appassionato di filosofia. La costruzione sorge su un terreno scosceso denominato Le Balze di Macciò. La sistemazione del giardino ebbe inizio nel 1914 ed è particolarmente ricco di decorazioni come mosaici, statue, stucchi tutti realizzati da Pinsent . Nel 1979 la figlia di Strong, la marchesa Margaret Rockefeller de Cuevas de Lorain, per rispettare le ultime volontà del padre di fare della villa un centro di cultura, la regalò alla Georgetown University che da allora ospita i suoi studenti durante la loro permanenza in Italia.

This villa Le Balze stands almost right in front of Villa Me-dici. It was built between 1911 and 1913 on a design by Cecil Pinsent and Geoffrey Scott for Charles Augustus Strong, a wealthy American philosophy enthusiast. The building was erected on a slope called the Balze di Macciò.Work on the garden began in 1914; it has a wealth of decoration with mosaics, statues and stuccos all created by Pinsent.In 1979 the Marchioness Margaret Rockefeller de Cuevas de Lorain, Strong’s daughter, in accordance with her father’s last wishes, that the villa should remain a centre of culture, gifted the villa to Georgetown University which accommodates its students there during their study semesters in Italy.

Giovanni Michelucci, grande protagonista della storia e del dibattito dell’architettura italiana del secolo scorso, è stato uno dei maggiori architetti italiani del XX secolo, celebre per aver progettato la stazione di Santa Maria Novella, la Chiesa dell’Autostrada del Sole, il Giardino degli Incontri al carcere di Sollicciano ed il complesso teatrale per la città di Olbia.La sua ultima opera, la Fondazione (a Villa Il Roseto) da lui fortemente voluta, continua a vivere ed operare attivamente con lo scopo di contribuire agli studi ed alle ricerche nel campo dell’urbanistica, dell’architettura moderna e contemporanea con particolare riferimento ai problemi delle strutture sociali, ospedali, carceri e scuole, un centro studi oggi molto attivo nel segno del pensiero dell’architetto.
Dalle terrazze di Villa Il Roseto, sede della Fondazione già residenza di Michelucci, si gode una delle più belle vedute su Firenze e la valle dell’Arno. In questo spazio ancora con un carattere fortemente domestico, la Fondazione raccoglie le memorie dell’architetto, i disegni, i progetti, i plastici, i fondi bibliotecari, i mobili da lui disegnati ed i quadri di sua moglie Eloisa Pacini, raffinata pittrice e sensibile pianista, insieme a molte opere d’arte degli amici architetti e artisti.

Giovanni Michelucci, who played a key role in the history and context of Italian architecture of the nineteenth hundreds, was one of the most important Italian architects of the XX century, famous for his projects for the Santa Maria Novella Station, the Church on the Autostrada del Sole (Motorway), the “Incontri” (Meeting) Garden at Sollicciano prison and the theatrical complex for the city of Olbia.His last work, the Foundation which he so strongly desired, continues to actively live and work with the aim to contribute to studies and research in the field of town planning, modern ind contemporary architecture with special emphasis on social facilities, hospitals, prisons and schools - a highly active study centre which bears the signs of the architect’s way of thinking.
The terraces of Villa Il Roseto, seat of the Foundation and once the residence of Michelucci,offer one of the most beautiful views over Florence and the Arno valley. In this place, still full of its strong domestic atmosphere, the Foundation houses the memoirs of the architect, his drawings, projects, and scale models, the essentials of his library, furniture he designed himself as well as paintings by his wife, Eloisa Pacini, refined artist and poignant pianist, together with many works of art by his architect and artist friends.
