Pavement joint grout
PCI Pavifix® 1K Extra
Technical Data Sheet 265Edition April 2017
for natural stone and engineered stone
PCI Pavifix 1K Extra is suitable to grout paversand flagstones from natural stone and artificialstone as well as clinkers and narrow joints from3 mm.
For floors.
For outdoor use.
For joint width from 3 mm.
For water-permeable grouting of
mosaic pavers, small pavers, large
pavers as well as flagstones from
natural stone, artificial stone, outdoor
ceramic and clinkers.
For natural stone slabs insensitive
to staining!
Only suitable on water-permeable
substructures!
For floor surfaces in private areas
exposed to pedestrian traffic and
occasional vehicular traffic such as
parking lots, garden paths, garage
entrances and terraces.
Fields of application
Also suitable for wet grouting artificial
stone pavers and flagstones.
Can be wet grouted, therefore high
filling volume even with narrow joints.
Single component, ready
for immediate use.
Wear resistant, permanent resistance
to weathering, material does not get
flushed out.
Crack-free curing and setting without
shrinking.
Water permeable, accumulated water
(e.g. rain) quickly trickles into the
ground. The surfaces are not
completely sealed.
Resistant to frost and weathering.

The substructure must be water-
permeable!
The entire pavement structure must
comply with the actual stress
demands and rules of technology.
In case of exposure to moderate
loads, installation can be carried out
in sand, lava or stone chippings; it is
important to thoroughly compact the
substructure when laying the pavers
on stone chippings, pavers must be
embedded in the stone chippings up
to approx. 1/3, if necessary stones
can be supportively fixed by adding
crushed sand. In general: joint grouts
cannot compensate strong
movements of pavers and flagstones.
In case of exposure to heavy loads,
installation is to be carried out in
bonded construction e.g. with PCI
Pavifix DM drain mortar.
A bonding slurry with e.g. PCI
Flexmörtel S2 Rapid must be applied
to the reverse of ceramic flagstones.
Place flagstones in a drainage mortar,
e.g. PCI Pavifix DM. Joints must be
water permeable after the installation!
Preparation of substrate

PCI Pavifix® 1K Extra
Required joint depth
- when exposed to pedestrian traffic:
minimum 30 mm
- when exposed to vehicular traffic:
minimum 40 mm
It is important for the reconstruction
of existing pavements to obtain the
required joint depth by blasting the
joints clean and to remove any
contamination from the stone sides.
Thoroughly pre-wet the surfaces
and sides of pavers or flagstones
until the covering can no longer
absorb water. Repeated pre-
wetting might be necessary!
Special care must be taken in case
of rough surfaces and at high
outside temperatures. Do not allow
the surface to dry up during the
application. We recommend to
repeat the pre-wetting process
depending on the ambient
temperatures.
Preparation of substrate
Joints from 3 - 8 mm
1 Using a hard rubber broom, press PCI
Pavifix 1K Extra into the joints by
applying pressure. Make sure that joints
are completely filled.
2 Then actively support the filling of the
joints by means of water from a hose.
Guide the water jet along the joints if
they are very narrow. Slumped joints
can be immediately filled with fresh joint
grout. Make sure that joints are
completely filled.
The remaining grout on the pavement
surface must be thoroughly removed
with a soft broom (e.g. coconut
broom) working diagonally across the
surface preventing the joints from
being washed out.

Fresh, unused material (no residues of
grout) can be filled into the container
and covered with water up to the
thickness of a thumb. Use up this
material within max. 4 weeks. At the
time of application, apply material to
the surface by adding water and
install as described above.
Application procedure of PCI Pavifix 1K Extra
Thoroughly pre-wet stone surface and joint sides before grouting. Cut vacuum bag open and pour fresh material onto the surface.

Press PCI Pavifix 1K Extra into the joints using a hard rubber broom. Support the filling of joints from 3 - 8 mm by means of water from a hose.Guide the water jet along the joints if they are very narrow. Fill slumpedjoints immediately with fresh material.
Remove all grout residues with a soft broom.

Wear suitable protective gloves and
eye/face protection during the
application.
Do not apply at temperatures below
+5°C. The best temperature for
grouting with PCI Pavifix 1K Extra is
between +15°C to +20°C.
Clean tools with PCI Univerdünner
universal thinner immediately after
use; when the product has cured it
can only be removed by mechanical
scraping.
Depending on the surface conditions
it might be possible that different
colour effects occur (e.g. intensified
colour, slightly shiny surface) at the
contact points of PCI Pavifix 1K Extra
binding agent and stone surface. This
especially applies to light-coloured
and open-cell stones. These colour
effects can be practically avoided by
pre-wetting the surface! Should a
shiny film still be visible it will fade
after a while. Due to the variety of
stone types currently available on the
market a general statement on the
colour effect cannot be made.
In case of coverings with chamfer
only fill the joint up to the lower edge
of the chamfer. The area of the
chamfer is not allowed to be filled
because otherwise the material might
break open here.
Protect grouted areas from driving
rain!
Loads acting on the pavement due to
utilisation can cause the paver to
separate from the joint grout.
Please follow the recommendations
issued by the manufacturer of pavers.
Not suitable for paths and/or road
areas exposed to trucks and/or
busses.
In case of higher loads acting on the
pavement it is required to carry out
grouting with PCI Pavifix PU. Please
contact the PCI technical help-line.
The permeable joint should be
cleaned to prevent the growth of
green algae on the pore space.
Cleaning with high-pressure water jet
(no earlier than 7 days) should only be
done with a flat fan nozzle. Distance
of nozzle to the substrate at least
20 cm. Do not use road sweepers for
cleaning.
PCI Pavifix 1K Extra develops a
noticeable characteristic odour during
the curing phase and/or after being
exposed to wetness.
Please note
Keep out of reach of children. Avoid
contact with eyes and skin. Wear
suitable protective gloves (e.g. cotton
gloves soaked in nitrile). In case of
contact with skin immediately wash skin
with plenty of water and soap.
