The samples were collected as part of a continuation of EPA's in-well stripper treatability study. All samples were analyzed for volatile organic compounds and water quality parameters. The groundwater that was sampled from the monitoring wells on railroad property was used to establish groundwater quality in the area. Therefore, we are providing you information regarding how the concentrations of compounds detected during the April 2001 sampling event compare with EPA standards for groundwater quality. The Safe Drinking Water Act has established Maximum Contaminant Levels (MCLs) for a number of contaminants that are considered safe for a drinking water supply. The MCLs for the contaminants of concern at this site are as follows: tetrachloroethylene (PCE) is 5 micrograms per liter (ug/1), trichloroethylene (TCE) is 5 ug/1, cis-1,2 dichloroethylene (cis-1,2 DCE) is 70 ug/1 and trans-1,2 dichloroethylene (trans-1,2 DCE) is 100 ug/1. Comparison of the contaminants detected in monitoring wells with the corresponding MCLs are as indicated on the enclosed table titled "MONITORING WELLS RESULTS: 04/24/01." As indicated on this table, all of the detectable concentrations of PCE and TCE are above the MCL of 5 ug/1. Cis-1,2 DCE and trans-1,2 DCE were also detected in some of the monitoring wells but the concentration did not exceed any MCLs. The EPA collected an air sample of the air generated by one of the in-well strippers to assess treatment requirements and the ability of the strippers to remove contaminants from the groundwater. RE: Folder No. 01890-2710th Street SiteColumbus, NE

Enclosed are the field sheets and analytical results for groundwater and air samplescollected by our contractor, CDM Federal Programs, Inc., on railroad property during the week ofApril 24, 2001. The samples were collected as part of a continuation of EPA's in-well strippertreatability study. All samples were analyzed for volatile organic compounds and water qualityparameters.

The groundwater that was sampled from the monitoring wells on railroad property wasused to establish groundwater quality in the area. Therefore, we are providing you informationregarding how the concentrations of compounds detected during the April 2001 sampling eventcompare with EPA standards for groundwater quality. The Safe Drinking Water Act hasestablished Maximum Contaminant Levels (MCLs) for a number of contaminants that areconsidered safe for a drinking water supply. The MCLs for the contaminants of concern at thissite are as follows: tetrachloroethylene (PCE) is 5 micrograms per liter (ug/1), trichloroethylene(TCE) is 5 ug/1, cis-1,2 dichloroethylene (cis-1,2 DCE) is 70 ug/1 and trans-1,2 dichloroethylene(trans-1,2 DCE) is 100 ug/1. As indicated on this table, all of the detectable concentrations of PCEand TCE are above the MCL of 5 ug/1. Cis-1,2 DCE and trans-1,2 DCE were also detected insome of the monitoring wells but the concentration did not exceed any MCLs.

The EPA collected an air sample of the air generated by one of the in-well strippers toassess treatment requirements and the ability of the strippers to remove contaminants from thegroundwater. The results of this analysis are also enclosed.

Norm SilerUnion Pacific Railroad Company1416 Dodge Street, Room 930Omaha, NE 68 179-0930

Dear Mr. Siler:

RE: Folder No. 01890-2710th Street SiteColumbus, NE

Enclosed are the field sheets and analytical results for groundwater and air samplescollected by our contractor, CDM Federal Programs, Inc., on railroad property during the week ofApril 24, 2001. The samples were collected as part of a continuation of EPA's in- well strippertreatability study.

Comparison of the contaminants detected in monitoring wells withthe corresponding MCLs are as indicated on the enclosed table titled "MONITORING WELLSRESULTS: 04/24/01." As indicated on this table, all of the detectable concentrations of PCEand TCE are above the MCL of 5 ug/1. Cis-1,2 DCE and trans-1,2 DCE were also detected insome of the monitoring wells but the concentration did not exceed any MCLs.

The EPA collected an air sample of the air generated by one of the in-well strippers to $ Bassess treatment requirements and the ability of the strippers to remove contaminants from the ^ ^groundwater. The results of this analysis are also enclosed. £ to|
