The Canadian Fiddler Vol 19 - Issue 2 | Summer 2011 A Publication of the Canadian Grand Masters Fiddling Association Barrhaven Fiddleheads perform at Super Fiddle Show in Riverview, New Brunswick By Marg Côté, member On Saturday night, May 14, 2011, the Barrhaven Fiddleheads from Ottawa performed at the Super Fiddle Show in Riverview, New Brunswick. The event took place at the Riverview Art Centre Auditorium that seats 600 people and it was sold out. This was the 23 rd anniversary of the show that has been hosted each year by Ivan and Vivian Hicks, and this year also included: Kimberley and Skip Holmes and Sherryl Fitzpatrick, Christine and Janelle Melanson, Stacey Read, Dwane Drost and the Sussex Avenue Fiddlers. We arrived in Moncton Friday, May 13 th , and attended one of the famous New Brunswick “Fiddle Doo’s”. We were welcomed with a delicious potluck supper where the main courses table was only slightly larger than the fabulous dessert table. Of course a fiddle jam followed! The next evening we performed at the Super Fiddle Show and finished the performance to an appreciative round of applause. Then we were off to a wind-up jam session at Ivan and Vivian’s house. On Sunday, May 15 th , we managed to squeeze in a performance at a Seniors Home in Shediac before heading back to Ottawa. The Barrhaven Fiddleheads are a group of people who live in the Ottawa area and meet every Tuesday evening in Barrhaven to jam and have fun. We also entertain at seniors homes, dances and other functions and all proceeds received are donated to the Canadian Grand Masters Fiddling Association (CGMFA). In 2010 we were the largest sponsor of the CGMFA. Let’s not forget that the CGMFA is run strictly by volunteers and funds are much needed to continue this prestigious fiddle competition. Representing the Fiddleheads in New Brunswick were Loretta Fitzpatrick, Bill McQuitty, Ron Bourque, Ron Caron and Marg Côté. Fiddleheads who were not able to attend but were greatly missed are Peer Norgaard, Keith and Alice Wilson, Bill and Yvette Kereluk, Bernie and Mavis Mason, Urs Bollinger, Mary Lynn Wood, Ron Hysert, Audrey Davis and Bill Côté. A huge thank you to Ivan and Vivian and the Sussex Avenue Fiddlers for their “Down East” hospitality. A Word from the PresidentThe 2011 Competition is looking good. We have booked our guest entertainers, Ivan and Vivian Hicks, as well as the Junior Showcase performers. This year will be a little different than previous years because there will only be three Junior Showcase Performers instead of four. This decision was made to avoid the rush at the end of the show like many of you may remember from last year. We are also still receiving registrations from Competitors through-out Canada.

The Competition will be held once again at the Shenkman Arts Centre in Orleans. As most of you know, the competition format has changed over the past few years. For example, the preliminaries now features waltzes, jigs, reels and tunes of choice. The finals give the contestants opportunities to showcase four contrasting tunes. With the help of Calvin Vollrath and the Steering Committee we hope that we have conveyed the importance of not straying too far from Canadian Fiddling roots to the all of the competitors.

I’m pleased to announce that Lois Siegel, Cathy Sproule and Troy MacGillivray will be on the nomination ballot for the 2011-12 Canadian Grand Masters Executive. Their vast experience within the fiddling community will be an asset to the Board. However, the Canadian Grand Masters Fiddling Association still needs your support in order to keep running a successful weekend. If you wish to become a board member or volunteer, please contact us to see what you can do to help!

The Annual General Meeting will be held September 12, 2011 at Centrepointe Theatre from 7-8 p.m. in Room 1C for those who wish to attend the meeting and participate in the election of the 2011-12 Board Committee. The new board will convene at beginning of September.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank John Miller, who will be stepping down as of the end of August, for his dedication and for all the work he has done to promote the Canadian Grand Masters.

We look forward to seeing everyone at the Competitors’ Showcase & Dance on August 26th and the Competition on August 27th. Last year the Finals were a sell out, so let’s see if we can do the same for the Preliminaries this year. Bring a friend and come spend a day listening to some of the greatest fiddlers from across Canada!

Meet the 2011 Junior Showcase Performers!Celine Hounjet, 15, Grandora, Saskatchewan

Celine started playing the fiddle at the age of five after her dad had received one for Christmas. She has been taking lessons with Everett Larson for 10 years and has also enjoyed attending the Emma Lake Fiddle Camp and Kenosee Lake Kitchen Party, both in Saskatchewan. Celine competed in numerous competitions all over Saskatchewan and has won many awards for her fiddling. She played at the Eagle Creek Jamboree for two years and was included in the novice showcase at the John Arcand Fiddle Fest. She regularly busks at the Saskatoon Farmers Market and enjoys playing for local events around the community. / Photo courtesy of Hounjet Family

Christine Melanson, 17, and Janelle Melanson, 13, Moncton, New Brunswick

The two sisters, Christine and Janelle have been playing the fiddle since the age of four and they both accompany each other on the piano, taught by Stacey Read. Both Christine and Janelle learned to step dance four years ago to add a routine to their fiddling performance when they went to Cherbourg, France just 4 months later. They have also performed in Massachusetts, USA and Ottawa. In Moncton, NB, they played at the IAAF World Junior Championships’ opening ceremonies, then for the Toronto Argonauts, Edmonton Eskimos, CFL officials and the Argos and Eskimos’ cheerleading squads and also for the queen of England who visited Moncton in October, 2002, to name a few. Christine and Janelle enjoy playing on the same fiddle, as well as step dancing while fiddling. Christine, the oldest, was inspired by her grandfather, a fiddle player himself. When she was three, every time she would visit him, she would ask him if they could play the fiddle. The instrument being way too big for her size, her grandfather would hold the fiddle and manipulate the finger part while Christine would take charge of the bow. When Christine turned four, her parents enrolled her into fiddling classes. At the time her sister, Janelle, was only 2 months old. Janelle was later enrolled at the age four, following in her big sister’s footsteps. Because of their grandfather’s inspiration and his love for fiddling, the girls insisted that he record a track on the album with them. He is featured on the last track of the album. This has a lot of meaning for the family. www.cjmelanson.ca / ©Photo by Jocelyne Vautour

Michaela Schlieman Mullan, 14, Ottawa, OntarioMichaela began listening to classical music the day she was born. She always wanted to play the violin. Her mom said that she could play the violin after she finished the Kindermusik program. The big day finally came and she went to Peter Dawson Violins to buy her first violin. Peter played some fiddle tunes for her and she was hooked. She left with her first violin and her first fiddle CD. Michaela loves the fun and excitement of fiddle competitions. She consistently places in the top of her age class including placing 8th in the 18 and under class as a 13 year old in the renowned Pembroke fiddle competition this past September. Michaela plays in a fiddle band with her sisters called, Triple Trouble. They have played with Canadian legend, Wayne Rostad, for the past two years in his show titled, Christmas in the Valley. Michaela is a member of the Chad Wolfe Step Dancers and plays first violin in the Ottawa Junior Youth Orchestra. Michaela loves to go to fiddle camp and has been fortunate to have learned a few tips from some great fiddlers-Natalie MacMaster, the Leahy family and Calvin Vollrath to name a few. Michaela is really looking forward to high school as she was accepted in to the strings program at Canterbury

High School. With music as her passion, you will find her at concerts, fiddle club, music festivals and jamming with her friends. ©Photo by David Pasho

Creating Partnerships, part IIBy Ed Whitcomb, member

Last year the Canadian Grand Masters Fiddle Association gained the status of a charitable organization, which will encourage people to support fiddling by providing tax receipts when they make donations. One of the first positive results is that this year the Association will donate a copy of Canadian Fiddle Music, Volume II to every fiddler under the age of 20 who attends a fiddle camp (four or more days) anywhere in Canada. Our estimate is that the number will be over 600. The charitable donation tax receipt will cover the costs of printing and distributing the books, and thus makes the gift of books possible. We all owe thanks to the Government of Canada for supporting our culture in this manner. The donations helps fulfill the mandate of the Association, “to promote and preserve Canadian Traditional Fiddling,” which is also the goal of my company, From Sea To Sea Enterprises www.fromseatosea.com.

This book contains 350 tunes composed by Canadians, piano accompaniment by some of the best pianists, biographical notes on the composers and pianists, an essay (in English and French) that explains the origins of fiddle music and the different styles in Canada, an explanation of the types of tunes and the dances they are designed for, and a bibliography. Over 200 fiddlers helped produce this book by providing music, chords, information, and support - it is really their book, and all of us hope these books will help young fiddlers enjoy our wonderful musical heritage.

Good Things Come to Them Who Wait and Prepare

One challenge Canadians in general who live abroad often face is that although Canada is well respected in most international circles, we are often mistakenly seen as being the same as those from the United States because many foreigners see our shared geography and English language ties. Many have assumed that Canadians and Americans are the same in terms of economy, culture and attitudes towards life and simply do not know the differences between these two countries. When I mention popular Canadian music names like Shania Twain, Bryan Adams and Leonard Cohen to the average Norwegian, they know they are Canadian because those details have been publicly reported. But when it comes to some of Canada’s national folk music talent, little or nothing is known about our traditional folk musicians. Elaine Keillor, a past music professor at Carleton University in Ottawa, has correctly observed that Canada has been very weak in the way it promotes its own traditional folk music talent (and of its own culture in general) to an international audience.

Most Canadian acts who are known in Europe need to have played there and returned often to perform and establish a known, lasting, professional profile. This has happened usually because of any or all of three points:

a) the country where one or more acts may perform may have a prior knowledge of Canadian folk tradition

b) a Canadian province may make a contribution to a cultural exhibit by bringing in these musicians as part of an international cultural component integrated into regular/special programs, or...

c) international organizers become aware of these acts and arrange performance tours accordingly.

Using Norway as an example, because of the way their local and national radio broadcast system is organized, radio airplay of traditional folk music from outside Norway is very limited at best. So the only route a foreign traditional folk musician has to become known in Norway is to perform at international showcases, give concert tours, be available for teaching their music, folklore and culture, have a public internet presence, use e-mails and social networks for promotion, and have CDs and printed music available for sale wherever they appear. If the opportunity is/was presented to you to receive any formal education in the area of the music you play in, then this is considered a

bonus in order to share your personal and national music background with the general public, because in Europe, knowing and discussing the background and culture of the music you play is just as important as being able to play and teach the music you play.

Before I moved to Norway in September 2004, I promised the Canadian fiddle community that I would try to organize concerts and workshops for Canadian fiddlers in both Norway and Europe so that Canada, our traditional folk music and our fiddlers could become internationally known. In my experiences with European performances since 1998, I have discovered that Canada is well respected in many European circles and that our traditional folk music is of interest to those who hear it and see it performed. After performances, questions I’m often asked by Europeans, “Who are your other folk musicians? What types of music do they play? Do they play the same music like you do or is it different? We seldom/never get to hear about traditional folk music from Canada. We would like to know more about your music and your country.”

Efforts on this front had begun in 2004 and continue today for getting other Canadian fiddlers to tour here in the future, but the 2011 tour with Patti and Alex Lamoureux was the first that our family was able to organize. The process for planning this tour began during the spring of 2009 when my wife’s oldest daughter, Silje Midtbø Vevle, approached the Columbi Egg Folk Music Club in nearby Bergen with Patti’s name in the hopes of being able to have her come and perform in Norway. At that time, we were unable to arrange other concerts to make a tour feasable, but we kept trying. In November 2010, our family made enough contacts to arrange four Norwegian concerts and organize an Easter Sunday jam session at our house for Patti, Alex and local musicians alike.

During the tour, Patti shared many of the Canadian dance tunes from her vast album collection that has made her a recognizable name throughout Canada and parts of the United States throughout her program. Her son Alex not only entertained on fiddle himself with tunes from his Groove album, but has also learned to play rhythm guitar and accompanied his mother alongside me on piano for the tour. I had the chance to perform original piano solos from my solo album Piano by Request, along with other original piano compositions of my own. The public let us know their appreciation by asking us for at least one encore in every location we played.

In conclusion, we not only thank Silje Midtbø Vevle for bringing Patti’s name forward in Bergen during the spring of 2009, but we also thank the following organizers who

made this tour possible: Gunnar Tønneson of the Full Moon Concert Series in the Klepp Municipality, Nina Fjeldet of the Thursday Night Folk Music Series at Riksscenen in Oslo, Gabriel Fliflet of Columbi Egg in Bergen, and Randi Andersen of the Osterøy Museum. It was sad to see the tour end, but we appreciated all who attended and we were delighted to have made new musical friendships along the way. And yes, although it was a 7:00am flight for Patti and Alex from Bergen back to Winnipeg, we will remember our numerous musical memories that we shared with Norway and the wonderful memories they gave to us in return.

Tusen takk til alle i Norge!! (Thank you to everyone in Norway!)

Community loses man of musicSteel-guitar player Al Utronki overcame stuttering to help children with the same impediment

Original Story by: Steve Newman, Feb 11, 2010http://www.yourottawaregion.com/news/local/article/607569

RENFREW - Al Utronki, who lost his beloved wife Bev last month, passed away last weekend (February 2010), leaving behind a legacy that is full of music, community-mindedness and rubber chickens.

The man, who often stuttered but not when he sang, proudly helped others with speech-impediments while maintaining a reputation as an outstanding steel-guitar player.

The owner of Al Utronki Appliances and TV Centre was working on his third compact disc, but never got to complete Heritage Tracks – Volume One for Ottawa Valley Heritage Radio.

[Utronki Appliances will be a sponsor for the 2nd Annual CGMFA Golf Tournament on Aug 30; see page 11 for details]

Support the CGMFA!

The Canadian Grand Masters Fiddling Association (CGMFA) is maintained through the proceeds from annual events -- such as the Canadian Grand Masters Competition (CGM) and the By-the-Canal Fiddle Camp -- as well as generous gifts of our partners and community members. The CGMFA relies on individuals who share our passion for the arts, especially music, and an appreciation for Canadian Traditional Fiddling.

As you know the cost of providing an annual competition does not go away. Your financial support will help ensure that the Fiddling community receives quality programming, as well as other fiddling opportunities. By donating to the Canadian Grand Masters Fiddling Association, you will help:

Ensure that we get full representation from all provinces and territories for the Canadian Grand Masters Competition. ▪Defer the transportation and boarding costs for contestants to come to Ottawa and compete in the competition. ▪Increase the opportunities available for up and coming performers, as well as established Canadian fiddlers ▪Provide scholarships for the By-the-Canal Fiddle Camp participants before the competition ▪Help defer overall operating costs of the competition and camp. ▪

The CGMFA plays an integral role within the arts community by providing performance opportunities to hundreds of emerging and established artists. Only with the support and dedication of people like you, however, can we continue to offer high-quality educational programming, create dynamic new competition venues and develop opportunities to further the careers of emerging Canadian artists.

The Canadian Grand Master Fiddling Association (BN: 87397 0065 RR0001) is tax-exempt and has been recognized by the Canada Revenue Agency as a National Arts Service Organisation with charitable status.
