1. FIB Heineken 2010 :: Presentation Since its foundation in 1995, the International Benicàssim Festival, FIB Heineken, has gradually grown to become one of the highlights on the international festival calendar. FIB Heineken offers a place where music and many other cultural activities give rise to an incomparable experience and where thousands of young people from all over the world come to share their own values and styles. This celebration entwines fun with personal cultural enrichment and for 2010, the year of the Festival’s 16th edition, FIB Heineken will have received close to one and a half million visitors – from the first year in Benicàssim’s Velodrome, to the transferral to its current concert venue in 1998. More than one thousand different artists, one thousand five hundred non musical activities (short films, fashion, art, theatre, dance and courses) and around eleven thousand accredited journalists have now become a part of our history. After the record breaking number of attendees in 2009 of over 50.000 people a day, the Organization underwent an important extension of the venue as well as an improvement in its installations and premises. The concert venue can now hold approximately 130.000 m2, that holds four stages, rest and food and beverage areas, FIB Market, Mustang Fashion Weekend catwalk, etc. Our main objective is to create a concert venue that you’ll be able to access in a safe and efficient way and offers a fully-accessible premises, a venue that is more flexible and offers plenty of rest areas in which to take a break between concerts. Our aim is to minimise waiting time for festival-goers and provide a safe environment in which they can fully enjoy the music and cultural events the Festival has to offer. In regards to the camping areas, CampFIB, the closest to the venue, was enlarged from 100.000 to 150.000 m2, therein increasing its capacity by 50%. Another important addition this year is the creation of a new camping area that attendees will be able to buy a spot in; VillaCamp. The new camping facilities have been put in place to allow all attendees to enjoy a complete cultural programme, in which the most important bands of the moment will shine equally. This year, we can proudly announce a stellar line-up that includes the best acts in current music, with names such as Gorillaz, The Prodigy, Kasabian, Vampire Weekend, Lily Allen and Dizzee Rascal; alongside all time legends such as Ray Davies, Leftfield, Echo & The Bunnymen, Ian Brown, Peter Hook, PiL or The Specials; to the premier acts in electronic music, which range from classic act DJ Shadow, sure bets such as Boys Noize, Calvin Harris and treats such as the Mancunian night that will recall the sessions of Graeme park, DJ Pierre and Justin Robertson under The Haçienda label. We’ll also have a selection of the best Spanish names performing at the festival, including: Ilegales, Love of Lesbian, The Sunday Drivers, Bigott, etc. In regards to non musical activities, we must make a special mention to the change in direction that the XI Short Film Festival has taken, which has seen the Short Film festival incorporate music into its programme. The Short Film Festival will offer a programme of activities chosen to complement the musical line-up at the festival. The Festival’s non musical programme will be completed with FIB Art, FIB-Act, the Date with Dance, Fashion and summer courses. Lastly, we’d like to mention the economic effect that FIB Heineken 2009 had in the town of Benicàssim and the surrounding areas. The festival generated approximately 18 million euros from the day the camping areas were open until they closed. On suppliers, from the Valencian Community, FIB Heineken spent

Page 4: Fib Heineken 2010 Press Pack

3.079.133 €; about 35% of the total Festival’s budget which in 2009 was 10 million euros. Costs were divided in the following way: ● Services (Hotels, restaurants, medical assistance, transportation, security and others): 1.697.478 € ● Land rentals: 173.427 € ● Local supplies: 413.075 € ● Works and facilities: 795.153 € As well as the above figures, FIB Heineken also hired 886 workers from this area (becoming the Community with the highest percentage of employees – 78.59% - that were hired directly by the Organization for FB Heineken 2009). Of these, 604 were from the province of Castellón and 282 from the rest of the region.

2. Practical Information for the Media press.fiberfib.com/ Press.fiberfib.com/ is a web-site that will be made available specifically for the use of the media. At this web-site, media channels can download all kinds of information – dossiers, press releases, information about accreditations, etc., photos of line-up artists, the Festival setting and logos. Accreditations Press accreditation requests will be taken from June 16th until June 28th. As has become standard procedure over the last few years, in addition to the regular requirements, it is essential to present a publishing project in order to qualify for free press accreditations. By publishing project we mean a detailed description of the journalistic activities/articles and the information intended to be covered at the Festival. For more information, please visit www.press.fiberfib.com Press Area of the Festival The media centre is located in the press area. Fully air conditioned, the room will be available for press conferences and fitted with offices for official use, collaborating media, as well as the Festival’s own press office. Wi-Fi Internet access, multi-purpose offices, check room, rest areas and bar service also available. The main difference this year is the location of the media centre. This year, the centre will be located between the main stage, VIP area and the FIB Club stage. This new location will allow the press to move more easily between the Festival’s different stages. Press photographers FIB Heineken has pits for photographer access at all of its stages and allows entrance to said pits exclusively for the use of duly accredited photographers in accordance with the limitations established by the performing artists. Under no circumstances will photography be permitted outside these designated areas. Television crews, for their part, have two possibilities for recording images and sounds of concerts, also in accordance with limitations established by the performing artists. On one hand, they can make use of the platforms located in the sound towers (in front of the stages); on the other, it is also possible to secure audio and video signals from the distributor of the media centre.

3. A bit of History… 1995-1997. The Velodrome. On the first weekend of August of 1995, the first edition of the Festival was born, bringing together 8.000 young people, on each of the three days’ of the Festival, in the city’s velodrome where two more editions of the Festival would take place. Bands like Suede, The Jesus & Mary Chain, Orbital, The Chemical Brothers and The Stone Roses, among others, left their mark on the musical history of a completely different event in Spain. Shortly afterwards, at the end of 1996, Luis Calvo and Joako Ezpeleta moved on to pursue other music-related projects, but have always remained involved in the Festival in some capacity or another. 1998-2002. The New Venue. From 1998 onwards, the Festival expanded significantly and moved to a new venue with much better facilities for both the fans and the artists – Björk, Sonic Youth, PJ Harvey, Primal Scream, Spiritualized and sixty other bands performing on three different stages over three days, heralding a new chapter in the Festival’s growth. It was also in 1998 that the Festival’s Extra-musical Activities were launched, such as the FIB Fashion Show and the FIB-Act theatre festival, both of which are non-profit ventures. These activities gained in intensity over the next years, becoming more and more consolidated, to eventually include FIB’s Date with Dance, FIB Summer Courses, the FIB International Short Film Festival and FIB-Art – all of which have become essential elements of Benicàssim’s urban and cultural landscape. In 2001, Heineken came on board as the Festival’s main sponsor, from then on it came to be known as FIB Heineken.

The following year proved momentous in the history of the Festival: 38,000 people attended each day, surpassing the wildest of expectations. Radiohead, The Cure, DJ Shadow, Paul Weller and Belle & Sebastian, to name just a few, put on shows that established FIB Heineken as an international benchmark of music festival excellence.

2003-2009. Ten Year Anniversary. The Festival establishes itself in Europe.

The 2003 edition of the festival excelled in the variety and quality of the performances, including Blur, Moby, Echo & The Bunnymen, Suicide and Beth Gibbons & Rustin Man.

In 2004, we celebrated the Festival’s tenth anniversary in the company of great and influential artists like Kraftwerk, Brian Wilson, Pet Shop Boys, Lou Reed, Wire and Einstürzende Neubauten, providing a spectacular overview of music history. This led to 2005 when we were blown away by the brilliant performances of Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Richard Hawley and Yo La Tengo.

2006 was another record-breaking year for FIB Heineken, with tickets selling out two months in advance. On that amazing third weekend of July, 40,000 people crossed the Festival’s threshold every day to groove to and cheer for Depeche Mode, Morrissey, Pixies, Madness, Franz Ferdinand and The Strokes.

Firmly establishing FIB Heineken’s reputation and status in both Spain and Europe, 2007 was another record-breaking banner year, with more that 150,000 people attending over four days to bask in the magic of Devo, The B-52’s, Arctic Monkeys, Iggy & The Stooges, Wilco, Amy Winehouse and Rufus Wainwright.

Page 6: Fib Heineken 2010 Press Pack

FIB Heineken 2008 continued to set the standard of distinction and quality thanks to artists like My Bloody Valentine, Morrissey, The Raconteurs, Siouxsie, and Morente Omega with Lagartija Nick – not to mention the tremendous and showstopping concert Leonard Cohen put on, which is no doubt indelibly etched in the memory of everyone who was there.

2009: We turned 15 and we broke all previous records in terms of the number of attendees. In 2009 we also had what the press considered to be the most important Headliners of the Festival’s history with Oasis, Kings of Leon, Franz Ferdinand and The Killers. More than 50.000 people a day mounted up to a total of 200.000 visits to the venue in four days that filled the city of Benicàssim up as well as the Festival’s camping areas and all the hotels available in Benicàssim and the surrounding cities. On Friday July 17th, the strong winds that at times surpassed 100Km/h, forced the Organization to have to cancel some of the concerts that were to take place that night, including the scheduled concert of the North American band, Kings of Leon.

5.- Non-musical activities Contemporary Art, Short Films, Theatre, Fashion, Dance and Summer Courses make up the non musical activities at the festival and are major contributing factors in turning the festival into one of the most culturally exciting and vital festivals in the world. FIBArt Where?: Torreón Beach/ Festival venue When? on the days prior to and during the Festival Price: Free FIBArt'10: Ephimeral architecture that is located both on Benicàssim’s beach as well as in FIB Heineken’s concert venue. The architectural Studio CR3AM made up of Miguel Beloqui and Sergio Ramos present Tubos, a proposal of land art architecture inspired in Nancy Holt’s work. The apparently random disposition of the tubes will allow the observer to look at the horizon through the different views each one of the pieces offer the spectator.

In addition, each tube will mark the predicted levels the sea will reach during the next five decades: it is both a warning to sailors and the general public consciousness to remind us of the efforts we must do in order to preserve the environment.

María José Climent invites us to her Punto de Observación (observation point) of false realities and from there, with a soft balance, enjoy the activities we generally do on the beach: look at the bodies that surround us, spy on the attitudes of our “towel neighbours”, enjoy the scenery, play…

Her experience on this type of leisure and ephemeral architectures lead her to look for experimental and visual sensations with which to praise the senses of the attending public; the participant…

The collective Conceptuarte, made up of “young activists of creation” that are willing to get caught up in any project that will provide a benefit for the masses, present Least one space, a solarium placed on the natural solarium the beach offers. The solarium is intended to offer shade for the Fibers that look to hide from the sun between concerts.

With an activist trajectory and a compromise with their moment in time and society, the Conceptuarte collective favour their own particular synergy in each of their staging proposals. They will also be collaborating with Recetas Urbanas.

The artist collective Atatonku (formed by Ibai León and Sara Campillo), associated for this project with designer Lander Telletxea, present the project Kissing Bench, a movie like scenario in which that passionate kiss between concerts can take place.

Inserted in the tradition of design, Atakontu and Lander Telletxea, caress the Mediterranean peacefulness with a touch of green and pink

Last but not least, the artist Judas Arrieta, will be participating at this years festival and whose work we already saw in the video selection we offered in FIBArt’04.

From his artistic proximity to manga and his general contaminating experimentation with the external reality of showrooms and galleries, he presents JudasZ x 5, a self portrait influenced by the mythical MazingerZ. This figure measures 5 metres and is presented in a format that will surely mark the memory of its youngest viewers.

In the concert venue you’ll be able to enjoy the participative proposal brought to us by Antonio Herrera: danzalibre.

The multifaceted author offers an interactive project developed in the Faculty of Fine Arts. The project takes place in a small set in which participants will be able to dance to the song of their choice. With the sum of all selected songs, Antonio will create a mosaic of miniature figures that will be seen dancing to the selected rhythms, as if they were in a “silent disco”.

FIB Internacional Short Film Festival Where?: Benicàssim’s Theatre. When?: from July 13th – 16th. Price: 2,5 € with wristband / 4 € without wristband, per session. 4 day ticket: 10 €. With the 4 day ticket, you’ll get the DVD ‘DIG’, essential documentary that narrates the love-hate relationship between The Brian Jonestown Massacre and The Dandy Warhols.

This summer we turn eleven and the new decade brings interesting changes to the Festival, making it a must-see event during the Festival week.

In 2010 music has a starring role in the FIB International Short Film Festival, as it takes a step towards the music festival, FIB Heineken. In the official section we´ll see 15 international short films and this year they must be related to music.

There will also be a videoclip competition showcasing exciting, cutting-edge Works and you will be responsable for choosing the winner. The Straight 8 Festival will be our special guest and they will be featuring a compilation, in super 8 format, of the projects that have been exhibited over their 5 years of their existence. A colocación, The Ciszak Dalmas Tamagno collective, http://www.ciszakdalmastamagno.it, will do a documentary video of the Festival in super 8 format as well as sharing a collection of Polaroid photographs. 8. - Social and Environmental Responsibility Social Responsibility We at Maraworld are aware of the role festivals play, not only as cultural and economic driving forces, but also as social driving forces that can take advantage of their communication capacities and influence to inform and provoke reflection on different social questions and issues. As such, FIB Heineken continues to support the informative and awareness-raising initiatives of various NGOs and non-profit organisations. From 2003 until the Festival’s last edition in 2009, FIB Heineken has kept a very close relationship with Intermón Oxfam in terms of their needs in regards to

Page 14: Fib Heineken 2010 Press Pack

campaign information, donations and new member recruitment. We must highlight the benefits earned through the Artist vs. Press football match and the parking management the NGO carried out and which benefits were destined to Intermón Oxfam’s different campaigns. In 2010 the NGO Ayuda en Acción will be the NGO responsible for carrying out the actions previously undertaken by Intermón Oxfam. Ayuda en Acción is an International Organisation dedicated to Cooperation and Development that works to improve conditions of life of boys and girls, their families and their communities in impoverish countries. Ayuda en Acción fights since 1981 against poverty, hunger an inequality through development projects and awareness campaigns in order to end the causes of poverty. FIB Heineken will donate spaces within the venue for any NGO that requests them. In past editions, Amnesty International, CASDA and Greenpeace, among others, have developed information and awareness campaigns in the Festival. Lastly, we must mention the presence of the Aarhus Festa Association since 2009; a collective that aims at informing about the risks associated with sexual relations and the consumption of drugs. Their main objective is to encourage personal and group responsibility in favour of a healthy coexistence as well as minimizing possible health risks.

Environmental Responsibility:

We at Maraworld are convinced that the responsibilities of major entertainment and cultural event promoters go above and beyond the design of contents, organisation, production and communication. It is of vital importance to develop and promote sustainable management to minimise our impact on the environment and respect our natural surroundings. With this objective in mind, FIB Heineken promotes its Limpio y Verde initiative, which has been underway for several years now and features specific programmes of key importance, such as recycling, the responsible consumption of water, and compensation for CO2 emissions. In 2010 FIB Heineken will continue to define and promote its ‘Limpio y Verde’ initiative with the aim of increasing awareness among the parties involved in undertaking the Festival. The key elements to the programme, which are listed below, have born their first fruits two-fold: on the one hand, FIB Heineken 08 and 09 were cleaner and more respectful with the environment in which it takes place. On the other hand, Yourope (The European Festival Association) was swift to recognise the effort made by the Festival organisation to increase its degree of environmental responsibility when it conferred the Festival with the ‘Green’N’Clean Award’ - a prize which distinguishes those festivals which are environmentally-friendly and which promote initiatives and measures to protect natural resources - to counteract the negative impact that festivals can have on their surrounding environment. Green and Clean Project:: FIB Heineken heads towards achieving an environmentally friendly management. FIB Heineken has set, as one of its key sort to mid-term objectives, the aim of reducing its impact on the environment by setting up a programme which will make the Festival more environmentally-friendly, with a sustainable administration which will give the same weight to financial, logistical and environmental issues. To this

Page 15: Fib Heineken 2010 Press Pack

end, it has set up a project of interlinked actions which integrates the following initiatives: Sustainable Advertising: All of the outdoor advertising campaigns for FIB Heineken have been carried out using solely recycled paper. Compensation for CO2 Emissions: FIB Heineken’s goal for the 2008, 2009 and 2010 editions is to plant over 2,000 trees, which will represent the creation of an authentic Fiber forest and help to compensate for the CO2 emissions generated by the Festival itself. Sustainable Shopping: FIB Heineken consume goods for the Organisation and Festival services in a sustainable way, using recycled and recyclable materials, as well as various fair trade products. Recycling Waste: As well as implementing a system for separating, collecting and eliminating waste via different recipients for glass, plastic and paper. Mobility: As well as counting on the collaboration of the traffic authorities to ensure that the Festival has a minimum impact on communications in Benicàssim itself, FIB Heineken has developed a number of programmes to encourage organised and shared travel, there is also the possibility of bicycle hire for festival-goers, as well as putting in place different collective transport services for the public, between Valencia and Benicàssim airport and at various points throughout the town. Finally, the Festival also has access facilities for handicapped people. Responsible Use of Water: FIB Heineken use devices to regulate the use of water in all of the Festival’s installations besides using environmentally friendly cleaning products. Protection against Acoustic Contamination: We promote acoustic protection among the public via information and the free distribution of ear plugs. We know that in order to carry out this project, the participation of the organisational team and the public is absolutely essential; with this in mind FIB Heineken has developed various communication measures aimed at both targets.

9. - Transportation Services Maraworld, in collaboration with Mediterráneo Holidays, presents the official transportation service for the Festival’s 2010 edition thought of and structured exclusively for the Festival’s attendees. The service will be operative from July 11th – 20th. APPENDIX 1: Artist Information FIB Heineken 2010

Aaron Wright and The Aprils These past years have helped Aaron Wright build the excellent reputation he’s earned for himself both as a singer and a composer. With his band, The Aprils, he creates folk with a touch of country that takes one back to the most classic Dylan without losing sight of Neil Young. His selective lyrics allow him to break away from the common ground his contemporaries currently move in. Alex Under Alex Under combines a sonorous collage by mixing elements of techno, trance and house to elaborate a complex system of “vibrant techno” rhythms. Alondra Bentley Semi-finalist in 2008’s Proyecto Demo, Alondra Bentley has gained a right to enter the nourished and unexpected group of Spanish composers and interpreters that have given a name to a genre that was practically inexistent in our country: Folk. With Russian Red and Anni B Sweet, Alondra Bentley has entered this group of contemporary bards that follow Vashti Bunyan’s trail. Ash Formed in 1989 by Tim Wheeler and Mark Hamilton in Ulster, Ireland, their debut came in 1995 with the mini LP ‘Trailer’. Although it wasn’t until the edition of ‘1977’ (1996) when their career took off with hits such as ‘Girl From Mars’ or ‘Kung Fu’; hymns of their time that can be placed somewhere between grunge –via Mudhoney and Nirvana- and punk rock. Benga Beni Uthman is an emblematic figure in the dubstep English scene. Along with his childhood friend, Skream, he proved that his promising and premature talent was a reality when he published his album ‘Diary of an Afro Warrior’ when he was only 21 years old. Bigott

Born in Zaragoza (Spain), Borja Laudo has found a place in the national scene through his characteristic and personal way of composing. His songs take us back to some of the greatest names in folk music managing to accumulate headlines with his attitude and inventiveness. His musical hyperactivity has led him to collaborate with bands such as Tachenko, Big City or La Costa Brava.

Boys Noize Alexander Ridha is the name of the producer and composer of Boys Noize. His centre of operations is in Berlin, where he moved from Hamburg, his birthplace although his indie-techno could very well be from Paris’ Daft Punk, Motorbass, etc. He has remixed Depeche Mode, Feist and Justice among others.

Brendan Benson Versatile singer, composer and an all time Pop music lover known for being Jack White’s partner as leaders of The Raconteurs. Brendan Benson has published four albums since his debut in 1996 with ‘One Mississippi’. ‘My Old Familiar Friend’ (2009) is the title of his last album. Broken Bells The mutual admiration between James Mercer of The Shins and producer extraordinaire Danger Mouse (Gnarls Barkley, DM & Jemini) has (luckily for us) given birth to the majestic pop of Broken Bells. Their recently released self-titled debut includes, among others, the superbly stylish sound of ‘The High Road’. Calvin Harris Calvin Harris’ last album ‘Ready for the Weekend’ (2009) is a declaration of intentions: make everyone dance. 100% danceable pop from Scotland. This young wonder has already worked with Groove Armada, Kylie Minogue and Dizzee Rascal among others. Charlotte Gainsbourg Charlotte Gainsbourg, the accomplished French actress and singer, is the daughter of legendary chanteur Serge Gainsbourg and his muse and wife Jane Birkin. She started her musical career in 1984, when she was barely 12 years old with her father, with the controversy ‘Lemon Incest’. Charlotte Gainsbourg has since published three incredible albums under her own name, along with a constantly evolving line up of incredibly talented collaborators. Starting with her father and more recently with other big names such as Air and Beck (her primary collaborator) on her latest album, the beautiful and haunting ‘IRM’ (2009). Chin Yi Winners of the Proyecto Demo 2010 contest along with Marcus Doo & The Secret Family, Chin Yi create an electronic cocktail in which Suicide, Ian Curtis’ ghost and Blixa Bargeld coexist. They are equally forceful and hypnotic. The Clientele At the beginning of the 90’s, the Hampshire suburbs witnessed the birth of one of the most elegant pop bands of the moment. Te Clientele has become a synonym of class, quality and good taste. Every single one of their albums have been received with praise and international recognition that has earned them the reputation they deserve. Cohete We can imagine they’re fed up with the constant comparisons to Patrullero Mancuso – band from Madrid in which we can find two of Enrique’s elder brothers – however, there are some similarities. Perhaps it’s the lyrics, a taste for the intricate or a need to escape the common ground or the obvious. Self managing and transgressors by nature, they are starting to build their legacy through ‘Micro Macro’ (2009) their debut album.

Cola Jet Set The end of Los Fresones Rebeldes in 2001 marked the beginning of Cola Jet Set. The years that followed were marked by the inclusion of new names in their formation respecting at all times their leitmotif: energetic pop melodies with an air that can take you back to the most danceable 60’s music. Guaranteed fun... The Courteeners Stephen Street, producer of Blur, The Smiths or Morrissey among others, is in charge of producing this pop-rock quartet from Manchester in ‘St. Jude’, their debut album in 2008. It was only a year later that they were touring around the US with Morrissey; one of the bands’ known admirers. In their recent second album, ‘Falcon’, Ed Buller (White Lies, Pulp, Suede) is the person behind the production of what has become one of the most promising bands of the UK. The Cribs Johnny Marr returns to FIB Heineken recruited as a solo guitarist of luxury fraternal power trio The Cribs. The Jarman-Gary, Ryan and Ross combo are coming to the Festival with their recent ‘Ignore the Ignorant’ (2009). Cuchillo The duo from Barcelona surprised everyone when they launched their first album in 2008. Their music has been described to be somewhere between the British psychedelic 60’s, Syd Barrett, the floral touch of The Byrds and the most acid side of The Beatles. The publication of a second album is now anxiously awaited. Cut Copy The Australian Cut Copy have become pioneers with a vocational and danceable rock that is now a fashion statement. They debuted in 2004 with ‘Bright Like Neon Love’ although its been their last album, ‘In Ghost Colours’ (2008), the one that has placed them in the front line. Daedelus Daedelus, Alfred Darlington, is the inventor of parallel musical universes in constant expansion due to a curiosity that can be said to be motorized by Monome. He is a Californian DJ, musician and producer that has worked for first class record labels such as Ninja Tune. Delorentos Delorentos is a quartet from Dublin was formed in 2005 and that have 2 albums up to date: ‘In Love with Detail’ (2007) and the new ‘You Can Make Sound’. Energetic pop-rock with a strong punk accent via The Clash, and very much in line with The Strokes and Arctic Monkeys, for example. Dirty Proyectors Dirty Projectors is Dave Longstreth’s personal project. His dream started to become a reality at the beginning of 2000, when he published ‘The Graceful Fallen Mango’ (2002) under his own name. The richness and singularity of his musically distinctive identity assures quality. ‘Bitte Orca’ (2009), his most recent release, locates the band among this generation’s indispensable talents.

Page 21: Fib Heineken 2010 Press Pack

Dizzee Rascal Dylan Kwabena Mills, also known as Dizzee Rascal, is an English rapper, composer and musical producer. Several number one hits and a Mercury Price confirm a reputable career of great rhymes and good will. ‘Tongue N Cheek’ (2009), his last album has redirectioned towards Pop thanks, among other things, to songs like ‘Dance Wiv Me’, produced by Calvin Harris. Echo & The Bunnymen ‘The Fountain’ (2009) is the new album of post-punk pioneers Ian McCulloch and Will Sergeant, Echo & The Bunnymen. Emerging from Liverpool at the end of the 70’s, they’ve been responsible for some of the most memorable melodies created on Mersey’s riverbanks. Efterklang Efterklang is a French Word with a double meaning: reflection or eco and a memory that is activated through sound. ‘Magic Chairs’ (2010), is their third album and the one in charge of putting the quartet in the midst of everyone’s conversations. Experimental Pop made up of loops, pianos, flutes, bass, trombone and an endless list of different instruments. Ellie Goulding Ellie Goulding is, without a doubt, one of the best new artists in the UK. Her meteoric career began practically a year ago with the EP ‘An Introduction to Ellie Goulding’ and has just reached her sweetest moment with ‘Lights’, her debut LP published in March. Fionn Regan Simon Raymonde (Cocteau Twins) is behind the musical career of Dublin born Fionn Regan. The co-proprietor of Bella Union – home of Fleet Foxes and Beach House, among others- signed the young guitarist, singer and composer up to publish their debut ‘The End of History’ (2006); album that includes pop-folk gems such as ‘Put a Penny In The Slot’ and ‘Be Good or Be Gone’. ‘The Shadow of An Empire’ (2010) is the title of their electrical second album. Foals Foals should have been on 2009’s line-up but due to Yannis Philippakis’ - lead singer and guitarist - indisposition due to illness we were deprived of his excellent ‘Antidotes’ (2008), debut album that holds them as one of the most prominent promises of British pop. Four Tet Kieran Hebden, aka Four Tet, maintains the level of excellence he has set out with ‘There Is Love In You’ (2010), the new album that has followed 5 years of “discographic silence”. Flavours of experimental electronic sounds with plenty of suggestive textures.

Funkagenda

In the past years Funkagenda has become a synonym of quality house music. Dance floors have been working to their full capacity to the rhythm of the profound bass and rhythmic beats that Adan Walder manages with his unmistakeable style.

Gentle Music Men From the time they were voted winners of Proyecto Demo in 2008 they have published two albums. Their first homonymous one was self edited and published by the band that same year. It presented the band’s strengths: good songs and good performers. They have just published ‘Cuentos Modernos’ (2010), a step forward that clarifies their intentions. Goldfrapp Allison Godfrapp and Will Gregory did their debut in 2000 under the name of Goldrapp with the magnificent ‘Felt Mountain’; an evocative exercise of Trip-hop that gathered all sorts of praise both from the press and the public. From their second album ‘Black Cherry (2003) they redefine their work looking for something more danceable; a tendency that would stand out in their music up until ‘Head First’ (2010), with perhaps, the exception of ‘Seventh Tree’ (2008). Gorillaz Following their recent sell out performances at US Music Festival Coachella and the Roundhouse in London, the Gorillaz are set to bring Plastic Beach to Benicàssim as the band play their first Spanish show. Gorillaz much lauded third album Plastic Beach topped charts around the world when released in March of this year. Their previous albums Gorillaz and Demon Days have sold over 6 million albums each. Gorillaz are the biggest grammy nominated virtual band in the world. Gorillaz are 2D, Noodle, Murdoc and Russel Hobbs. Performed by Damon Albarn, Mick Jones, Paul Simonon and the Gorillaz band the live show will feature songs from all 3 albums (Gorillaz, Demon Days and Plastic Beach) and include full production, with video animation, artwork and film as designed by Jamie Hewlett. Featured Artists are yet to be announced but recent live Gorillaz show’s have included performances by De La Soul, Roses Gabor, Bobby Womack, Little Dragon, Mos Def, Kano, Bashy and the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble. The Haçienda Night featuring Graeme Park, DJ Pierre and Justin Robertson The Haçienda is the name of one of the most important clubs of the end of the 80’s and one of the temples in which the Madchester madness evolved. Founded by New Order and the Factory record label in 1982 and shut down at the end of the 90’s. Graenme Park, DJ Pierre and Justin Robertson will revive the ’24 Hour Party People’ Spirit. El Hijo Experience, constancy and an enviable talent go hand in hand with El Hijo, Abel Hernández’s personal project that came to be after the dissolution of Migala. His recent second album ‘Madrileña’ continues with the poetic line of his last works, consolidating with strength his personal sound and style.

Page 23: Fib Heineken 2010 Press Pack

Hot Chip ‘Coming on Strong’ (2004) put Hot Chip on the map, although it was the self edited ‘Sanfrandisco E-pee’ (2002) and ‘Mexico’ (2000) that originally started turning heads including those of people like James Murphy’s from LCD Soundsystem. With ‘One Life Stand’ (2010) recently published, they’re back at FIB Heineken guaranteeing the best of danceable pop music. I Blame Coco The actress, model and singer Coco Sumner hasn’t even turned 20 and had already started, at an even younger age, to compose her first Studio album ‘The Constant’. This doesn’t come as a surprise considering we’re talking about Sting’s daughter. The Italian-born went to Sweden in order to get the Pop rhythms and accurate production that make I Blame Coco one of the year’s debuts that people are talking about the most. Ian Brown ‘My Way’ (2009) continues to improve the expectations raised by ‘Solarized’ (2004) and ‘The World is Yours’ (2007) from the ex Stone Roses singer, Ian Brown. Brown’s sound resonates between Rihanna’s previously recorded ‘Stillify’ and Zager & Evans’ version of ‘In the Year 2525’, somewhere between classic Pop sound and exuberant R’n’B. Ilegales Ilegales have decided to say farewell just before their 30th anniversary; twenty eight years since their debut album was created in 1982. After this first album came other albums that became Spanish rock classics among which we’d like to point out albums such as ‘Agotados de esperar el fin’ (1984), ‘Todos están muertos’ (1985), ‘El corazón es un animal extraño’ (1995) and ‘El apóstol de la lujuria’ (1998). The unwearying nature of Jorge Martínez and their solid career along with a collection of songs you could frame are the credentials that turn Ilegales into one of the main courses we’ll be serving at FIB Heineken. In deference to FIB Heineken, the band will interpret a repertoire that has been put together by their fans. Some months back, their fans were asked to vote for their favourite songs through Facebook arranging them in order of preference. We’ll see the tracklist that was finally put together at the Festival! Jack Beats DJ duo made up of Niall Dailly (DJ Plus One from The Scratch Perverts) and Ben Geffin form The Mixologists. Since they came together in 2007 they’ve become key in the new British Club scene through their remixes of artists such as La Roux or Florence & The Machine. Jack L Jack Lukeman is one of today’s most successful Irish musicians. Since he published Metropolis Blue in 1999, his supporters have not ceased to increase. His powerful voice, with a trace of the most notorious crooners, as well as his collaborations with artists such as Nick Cave deserve, at least, a special mention.

The Japanese Popstars Declan McLaughlin aka Decky Hedrock, Gary Curran, and Gareth Donoghue are The Japanese Popstars: Music to dance to all the way from Derry (North Ireland). With ‘We Just Are’ (2008), from their first album, they seduced both critic and public alike. jj jj is a duo from Gothenburg (Sweden) fostered in Secretly Canadian. We know very little from them; they are surrounded by a halo of mystery: whiteness and the utmost lack of information make up ‘nº3’ (2010), title of their second album which was preceded by their debut; ‘nº2’ and the EP ‘nº1’. Ethereal electronic, sporadic guitars and Balearic beats form the base for an angelical voice that make up fragile songs full of Nordic delicacy. Jonston Madrid based Jonston has released their second album ‘Taller de memoria’ (2010) and it already sounds like a classic. The Kinks and Ron Sexsmith are still their references although the band has expanded into new horizons. The 4.500 downloads of their album in just over a month is just another example of their growing popularity. Joris Voorn Joris Voorn registers a very personal techno apt for both Detroit and Motown fans. The last album up to date is titled ‘Balance 014’ (2009) and includes remixes from Radiohead, Minilogue, Goldie, Aphex Twin and Ricardo Villalobos. Julian Casablancas Well known for being the singer and main composer of The Strokes, Julian Casablancas released his debut in 2009 with the album ‘Phrazes For The Young’, whose launch was preceded by ‘11th Dimension’; a pop song that was a taster for an album produced by Jason Lader and Mike Mogis –Bright Eyes and Monsters of Folk-. Kasabian In addition we have the renowned Kasabian returning to the Festival vouched by the success of their third album, ‘West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum’ (2009). Leicester’s quartet produces their sound from a unique combination of songs and rhythms inherited from the Stone Roses and Happy Mondays, a few psychedelic drops and syncopated bass. Kidd Ross Kidd Ross’ life is directly linked to the musical universe. By the time he was 10, he had already developed and interest for dance rhythm surely related to having grown up in an environment that allowed him to attend festivals and learn from the best DJ’s. His definite step towards music came when he was 15 years old. At this point, Kid Ross decided to drop out of school to concentrate in mixing and producing music with the dance floor as his objective.

Klaxons Since 2007, Klaxons have kicked up an electro-pop storm with throbbing bass and contagious rhythms in album ‘Myths of the Near Future’ (2007) and hits like ‘Gravity Rainbow’ and ‘Golden Skanks’. Leftfield Paul Daley and Neil Barnes formed Leftfield in the London of the end of the 80’s – particularly known for their single ‘Open Up’, with John Lydon singing, which had half of Europe dancing. Shortly after, their first album ‘Leftism’ (1995) was published. Breaking over a decade of silence, Neil Barnes has confirmed he’s back on the scene. Lily Allen After two excellent albums, the short and intense career of composer, singer and T.V. presenter Lily Allen is still going strong. ‘Alright, Still’ (2006) and ‘It’s not Me, It’s You’ (2009) are those albums. The singles ‘LDN’ and ‘Smile’ preceded the eponymous first LP and were responsible for setting Lily Allen up as a pioneer for a new breed of British Pop Stars. Her legions of fans and the press continue to support her meteoric career. Lindstrøm & Christabelle ‘Real Life Is No Cool’ (2010) is the title of the last adventure of Norwegian producer and musician Hans-Peter Lindstrøm. This time, he has joined Christabelle, giving birth to the Lindstrøm & Christabelle duo. Danceable electronic music that lies somewhere in between Eurodisco and funk. Love of Lesbian Back in FIB Heineken with ‘1.999, o cómo generar incendios de nieve con una lupa enfocada a la luna’ (2009), the band’s 6th album led by Santi Balmés and their third one in Spanish, is conceived as a film that narrates a story that goes around the love / lack of love of a young couple. Magnetic Man Three of the most important names in dubstep make up Magnetic Man: Skream, Benga and Artwork. DJs and musical producers came together in a successful project that in 2010 promises success after having worked from behind the scene for years. Marcus Doo & The Secret Family

Winners of the Proyecto Demo 2010 contest along with Chin Yi, Marcus Doo & The Secret Family sound immaculate and have a repertoire of excellent songs that they interpret with great conviction. Folk-rock with a shoegazer touch and deep voices, male and female that, on occasions, sing in unison.

Midnight Juggernauts Melbourne’s trio, Midnight Juggernauts, debuted in 2007 with ‘Dystopia’, an album full of electronic pop enjoyable from beginning to end. Vincent, Andy and Daniel

Besides remixing artists such as Marilyn Manson, Kanye West or Depeche Mode, they’ve been in charge of touring with the latter in their Tour of the Universe in 2009. Mumford & Sons Who would have known that London born Mumford & Sons would come this far with mandolin, dobro, accordion and double bass? The young quartet, lead by the multi-instrumentalist Marcus Mumford have certainly marked their territory, British Folk, by ‘hyper-vitamining’ their ancestral melodies – bringing a classic sound hurtling into the 21st century with ‘Sigh no More’ (2009), their first album. Parade Antonio Galvañ states that he created Parade in order to channel his two greatest obsessions: science fiction and technology applied to Pop music. With such a letter of presentation and over ten years of experience to back him up, it’s a winner bet. The Paris Riots The Paris Riots were the winners of 2009’s edition of the ‘Road to Benicàssim’ the competition organized by FIB Heineken and Supajam. This edition, they are returning to the Festival with a renewed repertoire of energetic and convincing pop-rock. Peter Hook performing ‘Unknown Pleasures’. ‘Unknown Pleasures’ is just but a small piece of Joy Division’s unbeatable discography. The impact his first release created among critics and public has been echoing ever since it was put on sale in the summer of 1979. The most ferocious side of punk came to be straight out of Ian Curtis’ hands creating an exceptional syncopated, epileptic and bitter album. Peter Hook performing ‘Unknown Pleasures’, one of the main characters of that story will bring back to us part of the magic of the album that changed it all. Phil Kieran Phil Kieran, DJ, musician and producer from Belfast whose career started during his residency in club Shine; in the same city. His personal Techno and House style have taken him around the main European Clubs. PiL After finishing up with Sex Pistols, John Lydon gave way to Public Image Ltd., also known as PiL. The Prodigy The Techno Punk band from Braintree, The Prodigy, with Howlett leading the beats and Flint shaking the audience up are living a second moment of glory due to ‘Invaders must die’ (2009). The Prodigy, created in 1990, reached creative heights with their two first albums ‘Experience’ (1992) and ‘Music for the Jlited Generation’ (1995). Puggy Based in Brussels, Puggy is made up from the participation of England’s Matthew Irons, French Romain Descampes and Swedish Egil “Ziggy” Franzen. Their songs have developed, since 2004, a clean pop which lacks artifices of any kind becoming melodic and intimate. North American Incubus trusted their way of doing things and took them in their European tour in 2007. This experience made them graduate straight away from Rock school skipping several years ahead turning them into the privileged students they now are. Ray Davies Ray Davies has ensured his name will forever be synonymous with a golden period in British music, revolutionizing the musical landscape forevermore with a huge collection of classic songs and albums, both solo and with his legendary band The Kinks. Sublime works like ‘You Really Got Me’ – probably the second most recognized riff after The Rolling Stones’ ‘Satisfaction’- have secured Davies bragging rights as one of the greatest songwriters of his (considerably talented) generation. ‘Something Else By The Kinks’ (1967), ‘The Village Green Preservation Society’ (1968) and ‘Arthur (Or The Decline and Fall of The British Empire)’ (1969), three master pieces published one after the other. His solo work started in 1985 with ‘Return to Waterloo’ and includes moments such as ‘Working Man’s Café’ (2007) and is also superb - a natural extension of his work with The Kinks. The Ruskins Eamon, Dave and Ricky formed The Ruskins in 2007. Their rhythmic music tainted with outbursts of ska have left their print in the specialized media in England placing them, automatically, amongst the most promising names of the year.
