‘Cleaning the house’Holden to play major role as Opel plans broad-scale push into export markets

GENEVA MOTOR

SHOW ISSUE

By TIM ROBSON in GENEVAOPEL has revealed that it is “cleaning the house” in preparation for a significant push into export markets, particularly Australia as Holden looks primarily to General Motors’ European division for its future when local manufacturing ends in 2017.

Speaking to GoAuto overnight at the Geneva motor show, Opel board member and vice-president of communications Johan Willems said the company was making the hard decisions now in order to move forward.

Mr Willems would not be drawn on details of the forthcoming imported all-new Commodore replacement or other models beyond those already confirmed such as the soon-to-be-launched Cascada convertible, high-performance Astra and Insignia variants and, early next year, a new-generation Barina Spark (sold in Europe as the Karl and in the UK as the Viva).

However, Holden has committed to staging 24 vehicle launches over the next five years, with one third of the brand’s future models to be sourced from Europe – that is, the vast majority of Opel’s product line.

“What you are really seeing at the moment is us reflecting on how our future set-up around the world needs to be, and we are going forward on that path now,” Mr Willems said.

“In general, it’s a policy of this leadership group to clean the house, make sure we are set up for growth and where we go in the future.

“We made some decisions on Australia (to pull Opel out) some time ago, we made some on Thailand and Indonesia (plant closures and cutbacks) last week.

“You will also see some very good ones, also, where we will say, ‘We are going to go in for real’.”

As Opel launched the sub-compact Karl and its renewed Corsa light car –

including a hot new OPC/VXR variant – at the Geneva motor show, General Motors announced that it was cutting back heavily on Pacific Rim production capacity – a move that looks designed to shore up its European manufacturing bases.

Plans for a new small-car plant in Thailand that may have supplied a compact car to Holden have been scrapped, while a small factory in Indonesia will close its doors mid-year. Operations at GM’s Rayong plant in Thailand will also be scaled back.

Continued from previous page Mr Willems admitted it was

reasonable to suggest that the plant restructures in Thailand may mean a switch to European-sourced vehicles to fill its commitment to Holden.

“Knowing how passionate Australia is about cars, European cars surely have a role to play in that,” he said.

“We have already been on record saying that European-sourced cars will play a major role at Holden. And I’m sure Holden will play a key role in the products that are coming to Australia. I know how our product team operates and I know for a fact that there is input.”

Mr Willems said that specification discussions were ongoing.

“Take engines for example,” he said. “Holden are asking for specific things, and we are seeing what we can do to accommodate them, within the portfolio, and within what is reasonable. We won’t be successful if we don’t

work together on it. It’s ridiculous to think that you can sell cars if you don’t know what the requirements for the market are.”

Mr Willems would not comment about the possibility of Opel producing either a large SUV or a light commercial vehicle that would suit the Australian market, but did point out that incoming regulations for lowering emissions will have an effect on which vehicles can be offered.

“People want SUV-type vehicles, but if you look at the fuel situation, there’s no chance in hell that people are going to be able to drive around in big SUVs with the carbon emission target of 95 grams of CO2 (per kilometre),” he said.

As for ongoing speculation that the next Holden Commodore would be based on the next-generation Insignia, he said: “I know why you ask this, but I can’t really tell you. We did the mid-life cycle enhancement last year, so you can guess the timeframe from there.”

Mr Willem emphasised that Opel’s role in producing a vehicle range for Holden would help the bottom line of GM’s European subsidiary, whose fortunes have waxed and waned over the last few years.

“It’s an extra for us, but I would not make the statement that Europe is getting healthy again because of Holden; we have also announced that we are doing some Buick vehicles for the US,” he said.

“But it’s important because it will help. It’s always a good thing to have bigger volume.”

Global chief confident ofsuccess in Australia withnew models and dealers

Infiniti holds firm

Roland Krueger reveals the QX30 in Geneva

By TIM ROBSON in GENEVATHE new worldwide head of Infiniti is confident the Japanese brand will succeed in Australia, despite struggling for traction in the ultra-competitive new-vehicle marketplace.

Since the Nissan-owned luxury brand launched in Australia in 2012, its sales have been almost inconsequential, owing to a tiny product line and just three dealers nationally.

With a mere 304 vehicles registered in its first full year of trading and only 441 cars finding new homes in 2014, Infiniti is yet to sell 1000 cars in Australia.

However, global president Roland Krueger, speaking to GoAuto this week at the unveiling of the brand’s latest production-oriented concept, the QX30 SUV, backed the Antipodean operation, suggesting it was not a fair comparison to hold it up against the likes of Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Lexus.

“We have just started Infiniti in Australia, and there has been reasonably

good sales success for a small customer base,” said Mr Krueger, a former BMW Group executive who was hired last September after Johan de Nysschen resigned to head up General Motors’ Cadillac brand.

“It’s just three dealers so we’re developing the market, and it will come.”

Infiniti has embarked on an ambitious expansion program that will add up to 10 new models in the coming years in an attempt to take its global annual sales volume to more than 500,000 units by March 2017.

Last calendar year, Infiniti posted 186,200 sales globally.

Locally, Infiniti launched in Australia with just two models – the M mid-size sedan and the FX SUV, now called the Q70 and QX70 respectively following a change in global naming convention last year – before the arrival of the Q60 coupe and cabriolet (formerly G37) later in 2012.

The Q50 executive sedan joined the range in February 2014 and provided an immediate boost to the brand, the 197 cars registered over the full year accounting for 45 per cent of Infiniti’s overall sales.

“We need more dealers, and we will also launch more cars into the market and that will help us definitely,” Mr Krueger told GoAuto.

“You have to look at it from a long-term perspective. We’ve just started in that market, we are investing into that market and we are looking at it in the long term. That’s what we set out to do.”

Mr Krueger – a noted endurance cross-country skier – has studied the local market, and acknowledges its unique characteristics.

“It’s a very unique market. We will have to see (how we go),” he said.

By TIM ROBSON in GENEVAINFINITI is continuing its new-model onslaught unabated, releasing its third near-production concept – the all-new QX30 premium compact SUV – in as many international motor shows.

Following on from the Q80 large sedan unveiled in Paris last September and the Q60 coupe shown in Detroit earlier this year, the X-branded crossover – based on the forthcoming Q30 small car – was unveiled at this week’s Geneva motor show opening ahead of an expected production debut in 2016.

Asked just how close the concept was to reality, Infiniti executive design director Alfonso Albaisa told GoAuto: “It’s 90 per cent. And some

aspects are dead on. “Frankly speaking, this surface data

(on the show concept) is already a ‘go’ on one model.”

Like the Q30, which is due on sale in Australia early next year, the production QX30 will be based on Daimler’s MFA platform that underpins the Mercedes-Benz A-Class hatch, CLA-Class sedan and one of the QX30’s key rivals, the GLA-Class compact SUV.

It is also expected to be built alongside the Q30 in the UK.

Mr Albaisa said that skipping the step between flight of fantasy and real-world production vehicle was not too difficult.

“There is a very clear purpose to the brief (of creating a near-production concept car), so it can stifle your creativity a little,” he admitted. “But,

on the other hand, our cars need to look like concept cars anyway. A lot of what we’re doing in the body sculpting is going into the production car.

“These (three cars) are coming, and I know people can’t wait.”

Mr Albaisa told GoAuto that while the use of four design studios around the world necessitated a lot of digital rendering and imagery, the team still consulted on full-size clay models to execute the final shapes.

“We use digital a lot, and it’s the easiest way to communicate – but I don’t like photos, I need video or animation,” he said. “The car is kinetic. Even when it’s still, the world around it is moving, so I need to see it in motion.”

British brand reinterpretsluxury GT with all-electriccrossover known as ‘DBX’

By TERRY MARTINASTON Martin is preparing to branch out from its traditional high-end sports-luxury coterie, unveiling an all-electric four-wheel-drive crossover concept dubbed DBX at the Geneva motor show overnight.

The hallowed British marque claims the DBX “redefines the luxury GT segment for the 21st century” and was created to broaden the brand’s appeal and to “reach out to a more diverse global audience than ever before”.

This is clearly one of the first directives from chief executive Andy Palmer, the former Nissan heavyweight who left the Japanese brand last September after more than two decades of service and promptly set about leading Aston Martin “in its next phase of technology and product creation”.

Enter the DBX, a vehicle that Mr Palmer describes as “a challenge to the existing status quo in the high

luxury GT segment”. “It envisages a world, perhaps a

world not too far away, when luxury GT travel is not only stylish and luxurious but also more practical, more family-friendly and more environmentally responsible,” he said.

“I asked my team at Aston Martin to expand their thinking beyond conventions, to explore what the future of luxury GT motoring would look like in years ahead, and the DBX concept you see before you is the result.”

Mr Palmer said it was “more than a thought starter for us” but with

the caveat: “This is, clearly, not a production-ready sports GT car, but it is a piece of fresh, bold thinking about what Aston Martin GT customers around the world could request of us in the future.”

Overseen by chief creative officer Marek Reichman, the DBX was created at Aston’s global headquarters in Gaydon, Warwickshire, to also represent a “major evolution” of the brand’s design language.

Tiny LF-SA concept takesLexus into new area, butproduction not locked in

NISSAN HOLDS SWAYNISSAN has won fulsome praise for its swoopy new small-car concept, the Sway, with many pundits at the Geneva motor show urging the Japanese company to move it into production as a global replacement for the Micra light hatch.

At 4010mm long and 1780mm wide, the edgy five-door hatchback is 230mm longer and 95mm wider than the Micra, which would move it up from the micro-car category and into the light-car class alongside cars such as the Mazda2.

FULL STORY: CLICK HERE

By TIM NICHOLSONLEXUS lifted the lid on its quirky LF-SA micro-car at the Geneva motor show overnight – but cautioned that the aggressive-looking subcompact was nothing more than a concept.

The Japanese luxury car-maker said the tiny two-door four-seat hatch was developed to commemorate last year’s 25th anniversary of the launch of the original Lexus, the LS400 sedan, in 1989.

Penned by Lexus’ European ED2 design studio, the sub-B-segment concept uses elements of the company’s L-Finesse design philosophy, emphasised by the massive Darth Vader-like grille and Nike swish L-shaped daytime running lights.

Lexus says the ‘Stellar’ silver colour scheme references “space exploration”, while the interior is inspired by “the spectacle of the solar eclipse”. The car-maker also says the onboard connectivity, infotainment and safety combined with luxury elements “reflect the spirit of weekend adventure in everyday city driving”.

The LF-SA is 1430mm tall and 3450mm long – about 500mm shorter

than a Toyota Yaris and 106mm shorter than a Fiat 500 – while the 1700mm width almost matches the Yaris.

The chunky styling includes layered panelling on the doors, giant rear wheelarches and huge wheels, while the ‘spindle’ grille and proportions give the LF-SA an almost bug-like look.

Lexus’ now familiar grille transforms from a two-dimensional graphic into a three-dimensional form, according to the car-maker, while the width of the grille appears to give the concept a wider stance.

The double-stepped styling at the rear also incorporates the L-Finesse language, as seen on the L-shaped tail-lights.

Lexus says the cabin gives priority to the driver, with the driver’s seat fixed in place; the steering wheel and pedals are adjustable. The front passenger seat can slide forward to allow access to the rear seats.

Australia keen as plug-inV-Class debuts in Geneva

By DANIEL GARDNERMERCEDES-BENZ has applied its petrol-electric hybrid know-how and luxury sedan interior fit-out to a voluminous Geneva show concept, creating its most opulent, efficient and high-performance V-Class van to date – and one which the company’s Australian subsidiary is keen to offer.

Dubbed the Concept V-ision e, the vehicle borrows the plug-in hybrid powertrain from the C350 and offers a combined electric/2.0-litre turbo-petrol output of 245kW and 600Nm, but uses just 3.0 litres of fuel per 100km.

With sportscar power, the V-Class-based concept can accelerate from zero to 100km/h in just 6.1 seconds and on to a top speed of 206km/h, but with a more sedate driving style can cover up to 50km on pure electric power thanks to its mains-rechargeable battery.

Like the C350, its turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol four-cylinder engine produces 155kW and 350Nm of torque, but an uprated electric motor adds 90kW, powered by a larger 13.5kWh battery versus the sedan’s 6.2kWh unit.

That power output tops the most potent variant in the V-Class line-up by a sizable 105kW, but thanks to its hybrid technology the concept manages to better the fuel consumption of even the most frugal of the 2.1-litre diesel-powered van range.

New tech, costs drive Mercedes back to inline sixesBy TIM ROBSON in GENEVA

MERCEDES-BENZ is set to return to an engine configuration it spurned 20 years ago as the company looks to save costs and better integrate new plug-in hybrid technology.

The German car-maker is implementing a plan to replace its V6 engines with inline six-cylinder versions in its next generation of cars, as part of a plan to reduce complexity and component duplication in both its six- and four-cylinder petrol engine ranges, as well as allowing the inclusion of Mercedes’ new plug-in hybrid technology where required.

The wholesale change to V6 in the mid-1990s came as a result of a desire to share basic architectures with the company’s V8 powerplants, however it was marketed as offering advantages in packaging and improved vehicle dynamics.

Now, with the V8 engine able to stand on its own as part of the Mercedes-AMG family, Mercedes will return to the inline-six format to streamline manufacturing and introduce more plug-in capabilities across its four- and six-cylinder car ranges.

Daimler AG board member and head of research and development Thomas Weber said that the company had been well regarded for its inline six-cylinder engines for decades, but it needed to prepare its engine line-up for the future.

“The V8 as a standalone engine came to an end cost-wise (in the mid-1990s),” he told Australian media at the Geneva motor show overnight.

“So we decided to link the V6 and the V8 together, which brought us huge savings. The volume on the V8 side with AMG is now solid and strong

enough that we can do the 90-degree V8 independently.

“Looking forward, we are back at the situation of assessing whether we stay with the V6 family or do something in combination with the four (cylinder) and six (cylinder), and we will go in the direction where we link these technologies together in the coming years. We are well prepared and yes, there are some milestones we are starting now.”

Mercedes-AMG exposesracing version of all-newGT – albeit with older V8

AMG GT3 breaks free

By TIM NICHOLSONMERCEDES-BENZ’S performance skunkworks AMG has developed and produced a GT3 racecar that will hit the track in the customer-owned race series from March this year, following its debut at the Geneva motor show this week.

While it is based on the Mercedes-AMG GT sports coupe that is about to go on sale in Europe, the GT3 does not source its power from the AMG 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 under the bonnet of the production sportscar.

Instead, the German car-maker is using its “seasoned” AMG 6.3-litre naturally aspirated V8, found in a number of Mercedes vehicles including the outgoing W204 C63 AMG and the SLS AMG GT3. Performance specs for the GT3 are yet to be revealed.

The company says the six-speed sequential racing gearbox is mounted in a transaxle configuration on the rear axle for better weight distribution. This again differs from the GT, which uses a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

The GT3 does, however, share with its GT donor car the same double-wishbone suspension made almost

entirely from aluminium. Mercedes highlighted the “user-

friendly technology, excellent reliability, long maintenance intervals and the high-revving naturally aspirated engine with low running costs” as reasons that made the AMG-developed V8 the “engine of choice” for the GT3.

The GT3 builds on the design of the road-going GT with a wider and beefier body, large air intakes, a diffuser and a massive rear spoiler. It also features matte grey paintwork, or as Mercedes calls it, ‘designo selenite grey magno’.

By RON HAMMERTONPORSCHE’S most powerful normally aspirated, direct-injection street-legal 911 has been revealed at the 2015 Geneva motor show.

The race-bred GT3 RS brims with 368kW of power and 480Nm of torque from its big-bore 4.0-litre boxer six-cylinder engine – the biggest of any 911.

That is 18kW more power and 40Nm more torque than the 3.8-litre GT3,

helping the RS to slice 0.2 seconds from the GT3’s 3.5s 0-100km/h sprint time. Zero to 200km/h takes 10.9s.

Power-wise, the GT3 RS comes up shy only of the force-fed Turbo (383kW/710Nm) and Turbo S (412kW/750Nm) in the iconic 911 line-up.

Armed with a bespoke version of Porsche’s PDK dual-clutch automatic transmission, the GT3 RS is said to be capable of a 7:20-minute lap of the Nurburgring – 9.0s faster than the Carrera GT in 2004 but 23s slower than the hybrid 918 Spyder in 2013.

Images of the new variant reportedly leaked onto the internet from an American magazine ahead of the scheduled show reveal, but Porsche Cars Australia later confirmed details, adding that the car will land in local showrooms at $387,700 (plus on-road costs) in the third quarter of this year.

That is a premium of $94,100 on the ‘standard’ GT3, and topped only by the flagship 911 Turbo S coupe that retails for $444,900.

New-generation supercarlooks familiar but packs apotent V10, e-tron punch

Audi uncovers all-new R8

By TIM NICHOLSONAUDI has presented its brutal second-generation R8 supercar at the Geneva motor show this week, revealing a pair of V10-powered variants as well as a tech-laden plug-in hybrid e-tron version.

Launching in Europe mid-year, the mid-engined R8 is expected to sprint into Australian showrooms around mid-2016, with specifications and pricing being kept under wraps until closer to launch.

Audi Australia senior product communications executive Shaun Cleary said it was “too early” to identify the variants for the Australian market, but added that the car-maker was looking at the electrified version.

“At this stage, it’s also too early to say whether an R8 e-tron might be available

for Australia,” he said. “However, such an innovative, high-performance electric supercar is certainly of great interest to us and we would seriously consider it if available.”

Built on the same platform as the Volkswagen Group-owned Lamborghini Huracan that made its debut at last year’s Geneva show, the new R8 shares its 5.2-litre V10 powerplant with its Italian-built relative, albeit tweaked by Audi engineers.

Under the bonnet of the R8, the fire-breathing naturally aspirated FSI

V10 is available in two states of tune, starting with the entry-level version good for 397kW and 540Nm, which is a boost over the outgoing model’s 386kW/530Nm in base V10 guise.

This is enough to hurl the R8 from 0-100km/h in just 3.5 seconds – a one-tenth improvement – before hitting a top speed of 323km/h.

That price is for the 233kW/432Nm 2.3-litre four-cylinder turbocharged EcoBoost powertrain in standard six-speed manual fastback guise. A six-speed automatic adds another $2500, while another $6500 is required for the convertible priced from $53,990.

Moving up to the 303kW/525Nm 5.0-litre V8 sees pricing start from $54,990 for the manual fastback, $57,490 for the auto version and $63,990 for the auto-only convertible.

All models include seven airbags,

satellite navigation, cruise control, keyless entry/start, climate-control air-conditioning, heated/cooled front seats, a power driver’s seat, central touchscreen

Ford Mondeo raises bar

By BYRON MATHIOUDAKISFORD Australia has released pricing details for its long-awaited fourth-generation Mondeo mid-size hatch and wagon range, with increases in some variants offset by a significant jump in safety, specification and performance – and even a price reduction in others.

In showrooms from May and kicking off from $32,790 plus on-road costs,

the Ambiente hatchback is $1300 more expensive than the previous LX equivalent, and $250 dearer than the price of the recently revised Mazda6 Sport sedan.

But the completely redesigned Mondeo is fitted with nine airbags including segment-first inflatable rear seatbelts, satellite navigation, front and rear parking sensors, hill-launch control, paddle shifters, touchscreen multimedia interface with voice control, DAB+ digital radio, dual-zone climate-control air-conditioning, LED driving lights, Ford MyKey parental lockout system and alloy wheels – all as standard equipment.

This is on top of the technological progress the MD series has made over its MC predecessor in the name of improved

dynamics and efficiency, including a stiffer platform, all-new ‘integral link’ independent rear suspension, a switch to full-electric power steering and a complete braking system overhaul.

Combined, the measures contribute to a sizeable increase in refinement, with road noise said to drop by three decibels and wind noise cut by eight per cent, according to Ford.

Not least of all, the 2.0-litre four-cylinder EcoBoost turbocharged petrol engine receives a power and torque increase of 26 and 66 per cent respectively, to 149kW and 345Nm, while the 2.0-litre TDCi turbo-diesel now delivers 132kW and 400Nm (up 12kW/60Nm).

Kia aims to reclaim MPV market leadership with long-awaited all-new Carnival

Carnival comeback

By TIM ROBSONKIA’S most successful nameplate has been reignited in Australia with the launch of the long-awaited new-generation Carnival people-mover, priced from $41,490 plus on-road costs.

The new version launched last week marks the final stage of a completely refreshed model line-up under Hyundai/Kia’s global design chief Peter Schreyer, and Kia Motors Australia is now working to reclaim segment leadership.

The previous model, the Grand Carnival, was on sale for nine years, racking up 31,442 sales and ruling the people-mover market for the vast

majority of that time. However, the ageing Kia MPV

slipped to number three last year in the face of competition from a new Honda Odyssey and the surprise success of sibling rival Hyundai’s iMax.

Kia Motors Australia (KMAu) chief operating officer Damien Meredith told GoAuto last week that he was confident the new Carnival – the ‘Grand’ having been dropped from the name, returning to the moniker used for the 1999-2006 first-generation car – has what it takes to get back to the top of the segment.

“We would like to be number one,” he said. “We respect our opposition, but we think the car is good enough from a design point of view, it’s good enough from a pricing point of view and we

certainly think it’s good enough from a historic point of view.”

Mr Meredith was keen to emphasise the importance of the Carnival in the Australian marketplace.

“It’s our strongest nameplate. We’re very confident that we can get that number-one position in the people-mover market.”

Mr Meredith estimates the company is capable of selling between 200 and 300 Carnivals a month.

“From a volume point of view, we have to do that to get back (to number one) and we’re pretty confident we can do that,” he said. “The supply chain is okay at this point in time. This first five months is looking very positive.”

The new Carnival is a marked departure from the ageing visage of the old car. Designed in Kia’s Irvine, California studio, the new model appears at first blush to be much larger than the one it replaces. Looks can deceive, as the new Carnival is lower and shorter overall, and is the same width.

Carnival comebackContinued from page 13

The overall height of the Carnival is 55mm lower than the outgoing model at 1755mm. It is shorter in length by 15mm at 5115mm, despite sitting on a longer wheelbase (up 40mm to 3060mm).

The Carnival features sliding doors on both sides of the car, which are fitted with sliding glass. Depending on vehicle grade, the tailgate is fitted with a smart-open function. No sunroof is offered at any point in the range.

Available in four grades – the fleet-grade S, Si, SLi and top-end Platinum – the Carnival will be offered with a choice of two engines. The R 2.2-litre CRDI four-cylinder turbo-diesel is an updated carryover from the outgoing model, while the Lambda II 3.3-litre GDI V6 petrol engine is new to the Carnival.

Pricing starts at $41,490 for the base S in petrol guise and tops out at $59,990 for the diesel-powered Platinum. Opting for a diesel engine adds $2500 to the price of the petrol models.

The turbo-diesel four is good for 147kW of power at 3800rpm and 440Nm of torque from 1750rpm to 2750rpm. Additional acoustic covers for the timing chain and engine block act to dull diesel rattle.

Fuel economy is rated at 7.7 litres per 100 kilometres, while CO2 emissions come in at 199 grams per kilometre – not bad considering the vehicle weighs 2150kg in this configuration.

The petrol V6, meanwhile, produces 206kW at 6000rpm and 336Nm at 5200rpm, and is rated to return

11.6L/100km and 271g/km on the combined cycle. Its kerb weight is 50kg less than the diesel at 2100kg.

Both engines are mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. The diesel version features a shorter first gear and final ratio than the petrol, although the fifth and sixth gear ratios are identical.

Somewhat unusually in the modern age, hydraulic steering is fitted to the Carnival; left-hand-drive models are equipped with electrically assisted steering, but the switch to right-hand drive necessitated the use of hydraulic assistance.

RHD engineering programsees Kia’s Australian teambecome vital cog in wheel

Point of difference

By TIM ROBSONTHE localisation of Kia vehicles is getting a little easier – but it will not stop the company from pushing harder to get more, according to Kia Motors Australia (KMAu) management.

KMAu has taken each of the cars in its current line-up and subjected them to a program of localisation for both steering feel and suspension performance.

The program entails testing at Kia’s ride and handling facility in South Korea, in consultation with renowned suspension expert David Potter and back-to-back testing and component assessment in Australia.

The original suspension package for the new Carnival people-mover was, in the words of one Kia insider, “pretty average” at the outset of the vehicle’s development program, but a joint effort between Australian and Korean engineers has netted genuine improvements across the board.

The steering system, in particular, is unique to right-hand-drive markets, being a hydraulically assisted type, rather than an electrically assisted system.

The move towards electric systems results in fewer drive belts and decreased loads on the engine, netting improvements in fuel economy. The trade-off is often in steering feel at the wheel rim.

KMAu technical consultant Graeme Gambold praised the feel of hydraulic steering and added that it was a good fit for the Carnival.

“There’s nothing wrong with hydraulic steering, and it obviously gives you a better feel,” he said. “So it was a choice for Kia to go that way.

“Hydraulic steering is still perceived by a lot of engineers as a premium system. It’s just the push for better fuel consumption that’s seen everyone go electric. We still see that hydraulic steering is not lacking in anything – it’s actually a benefit to this model.”

KMAu product manager Jeff Shafer revealed that manufacturing requirements had directed the Carnival down the path of hydraulic steering, but the advantages for the consumer were worth the point of difference.

“There’s electric steering for the vehicle in left-hand-drive configuration,” he said.

Chinese motor giant SAICto propel LDV brand herewith multiple new models

LDV confirms ute, SUV

By RON HAMMERTONA ONE-TONNE pick-up and related SUV from China’s biggest motor company, Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (SAIC), have been confirmed for Australia within 18 months as part of a major expansion of SAIC’s LDV range here.

The ute/SUV twins will join the existing British-designed, Chinese-built LDV V80 large van, bus and cab-chassis range and upcoming all-new LDV G10 mid-sized people-mover and van due in about June.

SAIC has been taking no chances with the ute, sending teams of Chinese engineers and product planners to Australia to quiz dealers, potential customers and other stakeholders as part of extensive planning in co-operation with LDV importer Ateco Automotive.

A competitor for the Toyota HiLux, Ford Ranger, Holden Colorado and Nissan Navara, as well as Chinese entries from other Ateco brands Great Wall and Foton, the one-tonner is expected to arrive in LDV’s Australian showrooms in mid-to-late 2016, and will be followed soon after by the SUV built on the same body-on-frame chassis.

One of the fastest-growing motor companies in the world, Shanghai-based SAIC produced almost six million vehicles last year, mostly

under its market-leading joint ventures with General Motors and Volkswagen Group in the world’s biggest market.

But the company has been growing its own brands that, apart from LDV, include MG – the iconic British brand which, like LDV, was scooped

up with Rover by the cashed-up SAIC during the global financial crisis.

Plans for the SAIC-developed ute were revealed to GoAuto last week by LDV Automotive Australia general manager Dinesh Chinnappa, who said development of the vehicle was well advanced.

“SAIC regard Australia as being an important strategic market and they have put huge effort into it,” he said.

“We have had engineers on the ground in Australia to the point where

it is becoming annoying, talking to end users, talking to dealers, trying to find out what the local requirements for this market are.

“What is very good about that is that from day one of the design process they are taking into consideration the needs, wants and demands of the Australian market.

“This is part of their strategic view of learning how to go into Europe and the US by learning about mature markets such as Australia, and it is very good news for us.”

Mr Chinnappa – a long-time Ateco staffer who has worked on other Chinese brands as well as Kia for the importer – emphasised that the ute and SUV would both comprise a range, not a single model.

He said the pick-up would be a similar size to current Thai-built vehicles such as the Ranger and Colorado.

Automated gearbox andnew commuter bus linesexpand LDV’s V80 range

V80 booster shot

By RON HAMMERTONCHINESE commercial vehicle specialist LDV has expanded its V80 van range in Australia by adding automatic transmission alternatives and the cheapest 11- and 14-seat commuter buses on the market.

Also in the pipeline is a cab-chassis V80 with a carrying capacity of more than 1.2 tonnes.

The new variants will take the V80 range from three to nine, greatly expanding the brand’s reach against the likes of Toyota’s HiAce and European entrants such as the Renault Trafic and Master, Ford Transit, Fiat Ducato and Volkswagen Transporter.

A product of China’s biggest auto manufacturer, Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (SAIC), the British-designed LDV vans are effectively being relaunched by independent importer Ateco Automotive

after an aborted start under rival WMC in 2013.

LDV Automotive Australia general manager Dinesh Chinnappa said the V80 was “absolutely just the beginning” of LDV’s range in Australia.

He said Ateco was planning to add a Hyundai iMax/iLoad rival, the LDV G10, in June, as well as a one-tonne pick-up and SUV range next year.

Available until now only with a five-speed manual gearbox in three panel-sided goods van guises – short-wheelbase, long-wheelbase mid-roof and long-wheelbase high-roof – the V80 has gained an automated gearbox on all of those variants for a $2000 premium.

The single-clutch six-speed transmission – made in Italy by Magneti Marelli – is the same unit as used by some of Europe’s biggest van-makers such as Fiat and Renault.

The transmission is standard equipment on the V80’s new bus variants that come in short- and long-wheelbase lengths with 11 and 14 seats respectively.

Like all V80 variants, the buses are

powered by a 100kW/330Nm 2.5-litre turbo-diesel sourced from VM Motori.

While Toyota’s top-selling 12-seat HiAce Commuter Bus starts at $53,490 plus on-road costs for the 2.7-litre petrol version, the V80’s diesel-only 11-seater is priced at a super-sharp $39,990 driveaway for ABN holders.

The bigger, 5700mm-long 14-seater – which gains a high roof along with the extra pews on the longer wheelbase – is $46,990 driveaway.

Both come with dual sliding side doors, rear barn doors and a similar level of equipment that includes dual-zone air-conditioning, cruise control, an electric-operated passenger step, eight-way adjustable driver’s seat and rear parking sensors.

Although the 14-seater is about 300kg heavier than its smaller sibling, fuel economy is said to be the same at 9.4 litres per 100km on the combined test cycle.

Penske sizes up Australia

By STUART MARTINA NEW chapter in Australian motorsport could signal similarly seismic changes for the automotive retail industry, with American billionaire Roger Penske eyeing further opportunities Down Under.

The new-look Dick Johnson Racing Team Penske’s appearance on the grid at the Clipsal 500 – with returning two-time titleholder Marcos Ambrose at the wheel of the team’s single-car entry – could also signal Penske involvement elsewhere.

The 78-year-old former racer landed in Adelaide just prior to the start of the V8 Supercar season last week to watch over DJR Team Penske’s first V8 Supercar appearance and hinted that the retail side of the Australian automotive industry could be the next step for the Penske brand.

“There’s also an opportunity that we are looking at here at some point in retail automotive if it fits into our global footprint,” he said.

“We need to digest both the truck distribution and MTU businesses over the next 12 months, but out of the corner of my eye I can see an opportunity in retail automotive.”

While not elaborating on specific intentions, Mr Penske said almost three quarters of the Penske car retail business was premium luxury.

“It’s not our first priority today but maybe there’s a group we could look at to tuck into our global business footprint,” he said.

Stretching across the United States, United Kingdom and Western Europe, the Penske Corporation empire covers 41 brands and 340 franchises across the globe and revenues of more than $US19 billion ($A24.3b).

This includes MTU Detroit Diesel (in a deal done last year), Western Star and MAN truck interests since late 2014 in Australia, with former Nissan Motorsport and HSV executive John Crennan working for Penske Corporation in Australia.

The Penske Automotive Group has a stable of dealerships comprising Acura, Alfa Romeo, Aston Martin, Audi, Bentley, BMW, Bugatti, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Citroen, Dodge, Ferrari, Fiat, Ford, Honda, Hyundai, Infiniti, Jaguar, Jeep, Lamborghini, Lexus, Maserati, McLaren, Mercedes and Volkswagen among the key brands.

Mr Penske said the involvement in Australian motorsport is not a “short-term stay” and added that he expects the team to be in the top half of the table by the end of the season.

By NEIL DOWLINGIN THE rarefied air once occupied by its namesake, Aston Martin has taken off with an exclusive, track-only supercar for the exceptionally well-heeled driver.

Named after the iconic 1950s delta-winged British fighter jet, the Aston Martin Vulcan is based on the One-77 hypercar platform and shares its core drivetrain.

While expected to showcase the first of AMG’s V8 engines as part of an arrangement with Daimler AG, the Vulcan has emerged at the Geneva motor show this week with a 7.0-litre V12 that the company says has “more than 800 horsepower”, equivalent to about 600kW-plus. It drives the rear

wheels through a sequential gearbox.Aston Martin chief executive Andy

Palmer described it as “a sportscar for true sportscar lovers”.

“I believe the Aston Martin Vulcan, and the unique ownership program that sits behind it, sets a whole new standard in the ultra-high luxury supercar class,” he said.

Only 24 will be built and the Vulcan becomes the second limited-edition coupe to be launched by Aston Martin in the past year, following the Vantage GT3.

But it is more powerful, more exclusive and sells to its discerning audience along with an alluring driver-training experience manned by Aston Martin’s best factory drivers.

Parting with an estimated $2 million for the car brings with it a commitment to go trackside with the manufacturer to bring the owner’s driving skills up to par.

There is a free program of intensive track work led by factory drivers including Aston Martin Racing’s Le Mans-winning Darren Turner. Theoretical and practical tuition includes successive training in high-performance models, starting with the V12 Vantage S and rising through the One-77 to the Vantage GT4.

2015 GENEVA MOTOR SHOW A-Z

By NEIL DOWLINGAUDI has uncovered its second Prologue concept car, this time wearing the Avant label, and, like its sedan sibling, points to likely future production models.

The wagon-like Avant presented in Geneva this week is longer than the

fastback styling of the sedan shown late last year at the Los Angeles motor show, however the exterior and interior styling are very close.

Audi board member and head of technical development Ulrich Hackenberg said the design of the sedan has been translated into a longer form.

“The Audi Prologue Avant is progressive, emotion-filled and versatile,” he said. “It reflects Audi’s technological competence and quality claim perfectly.”

While Audi will not confirm it, the Prologue sedan is the design future for

the A8 flagship that is expected in 2017. That design, marked by a low silhouette and a flat-faced full-width grille with chamfered edges, is then expected to march on to the A6 and A7.

The new grille is a big step away from the full-depth, framed grille that Audi has used as a defining point for more than a decade. In its future A8 guise, it is also expected to morph into the A9 coupe that will rival the Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe.

2015 GENEVA MOTOR SHOW A-Z

By TIM NICHOLSONBENTLEY has previewed its future design direction with its striking EXP 10 Speed 6 coupe concept that hints at a possible sub-Continental GT sportscar.

Unveiling the concept at the Geneva motor show, the Volkswagen Group-owned luxury car-maker described the EXP 10 Speed 6 as a “British interpretation of a high-performance two-seater sportscar”, suggesting that Bentley could build it as a competitor to the likes of the Mercedes-AMG GT, Porsche 911 and high-end versions of the Jaguar F-Type.

Bentley Motors chairman and chief executive Wolfgang Dürheimer said the sleek coupe could be more than just a show car, but stopped short of

confirming it for production. “EXP 10 Speed 6 is one vision

for Bentley’s future – a powerful, exquisite and individual concept,” he said. “The show car has the potential to be the new pinnacle luxury two-seat sportscar. It offers thrilling, driver-oriented performance, complete with trademark modern Bentley luxury and effortlessness.

“It could be a future model line, alongside the Continental GT and redefining the pinnacle of another

market sector, and the styling of the EXP 10 Speed 6 could influence the expansion of the Bentley family.

“This is not just a new sportscar concept – but the potential Bentley sportscar – a bold vision for a brand with a bold future.”

Bentley Motors Limited Asia-Pacific head of marketing and communications Robin Peel told GoAuto that the car-maker always produces vehicles for most major markets, but reiterated the model’s concept status.

“Bentley has always built cars that are available in all our global markets, and have no plans to change this for future models,” he said.

BENTLEY EXP 10 SPEED 6

By BYRON MATHIOUDAKISTHE final example of the world’s fastest production car bowed out in Geneva this week, and was displayed alongside the very first Veyron 16.4 that preceded it 10 years ago.

Finished in special red carbon-fibre bodywork with a flurry of special last-of-series touches – but no more power or torque compared to the Grand Sport Finesse variant on which it is based – La Finale is the 450th example of the series.

However, Bugatti Automobiles president Wolfgang Dürheimer said all was not lost, revealing that a Veyron 16.4 replacement is in the pipeline.

“With the next Bugatti model, we are aiming to consolidate and expand the market-leading position we have

established with the Veyron,” he said. “Our challenge is to make the best even better.”

While little is known about the replacement, overseas reports have suggested it could be powered by a hybrid powertrain and potentially reach speeds of up to a mind-boggling 460km/h – some 29km/h past the record-breaking 431.072km/h of the 8.0-litre W16 quad-turbo Veyron.

2015 GENEVA MOTOR SHOW A-Z

By RON HAMMERTONAFTER a five-year gestation, Honda’s new-generation Civic Type R has emerged at the Geneva motor show, with the Japanese company revealing its all-new 2.0-litre turbocharged VTEC engine

will pack 224kW of power and 400Nm of torque and thus live up to its hype as the most potent production front-wheel-drive hatchback on the planet.

Although some other hatchbacks such as Mercedes-Benz’s A45 AMG (265kW) and Ford’ s new Focus RS (235kW) carry more power, they are all-wheel drive.

With a top speed of 270km/h and aggressive aerodynamics package, the British-built “racecar for the road” is said to cover the 0-100km/h sprint in

5.7 seconds – faster than the likes of Renault’s Megane RS275 Trophy (6.0s) and Volkswagen’s Golf GTI (6.4s).

Honda is also claiming a new front-wheel-drive hatchback record for a lap of Germany’s Nurburgring, saying a prototype achieved 7:50.63min in tyre testing, eclipsing the Renault Megane RS275 Trophy’s 7:54. It now plans to send a production version back for another crack.

By TIM NICHOLSONLOTUS has used this week’s Geneva motor show to present the fastest and most powerful vehicle it has ever produced – the Evora 400 – ahead of its Australian launch early next year.

The Malaysian-owned British marque claims that more than two thirds of the Evora 400 is new, including the supercharged and charge-cooled mid-mounted 3.5-litre V6 engine sitting under the sleek bonnet.

In this guise, the Evora pumps out 298kW, or 400hp – hence the name – at 7000rpm and 410Nm of torque from 3500 to 6500rpm, which helps push the road rocket from 0-100km/h in 4.2 seconds and on to a maximum speed of 300km/h.

This represents a 40kW/10Nm boost

over the regular 258kW/400Nm Evora S and S IPS, and a 0.6s improvement in 0-100km/h acceleration.

Speaking of sprints, Lotus says the Evora 400 can lap the test track at Lotus headquarters in Hethel, England, a full six seconds faster than the previous record-holder.

Lotus has shaved 22kg from the already lightweight Evora to help improve performance.

By BYRON MATHIOUDAKISLAMBORGHINI’S already blindingly quick Aventador has ascended into the 350km/h-plus stratosphere thanks to a dizzying mix of more power, less weight and better aerodynamics.

Dubbed the LP750-4 Superveloce (for super-fast, naturally), and due out in Europe from the middle of this year, the two-door super-coupe revealed at the Geneva motor show this week is the first example of a model that has undergone a focused power-to-weight

improvement regime designed to make it the Italian brand’s fastest vehicle yet.

Increased use of carbon-fibre and other lightweight materials has saved 50kg, while a tweaked version of the existing 6.5-litre naturally aspirated

V12 sees power jump from 515kW to 552kW at a heady 8400rpm.

And while peak torque of 690Nm remains the same, there is now a plumper torque curve and a new top set at 5500rpm, with a redline rising to 8500rpm, to significantly boost low-to-mid-range responsiveness.

This is possible via optimised variable valve timing and intake systems, as well as reduced exhaust back-pressure.

By TUNG NGUYENMcLAREN has thrown the covers off its lightweight 675LT – the most potent model in its Super Series range – alongside the track-only P1 GTR at the

Geneva motor show this week.Built on the 650S platform, the

675LT ups power from the 3.8-litre twin-turbocharged V8 to 497kW (or 675PS, hence the name) at 7100rpm – an increase of 19kW from the donor car’s 478kW – while also dropping 100kg to tip the scales at 1230kg.

This is enough to shoot the new McLaren – which drives the rear wheels through a seven-speed SSG dual-clutch

transmission and has peak torque of 700Nm at 5500rpm – from zero to 100km/h in 2.9 seconds, while 200km/h comes up in 7.9 seconds and top speed is electronically limited to 330km/h.

By TIM NICHOLSONMITSUBISHI has revealed its XR-PHEV II concept at the Geneva motor show this week, previewing the look of its next-gen ASX, due within two years.

The vehicle shown in Geneva is expected to be the final concept before a

near-production version turns up inside the next 12 months, possibly at the Tokyo motor show later this year.

Mitsubishi Motors Corporation has previously stated that the XR-PHEV

previews the second-generation version of the popular ASX crossover, and in a statement the company confirmed that it would be the second production plug-in hybrid model in the range, following the Outlander PHEV that arrived in Australia early last year.

By DANIEL GARDNERSUZUKI has confirmed for production a five-door hatchback that appears to split the difference between its zippy

Swift hatch and outgoing Kizashi sedan.Shown as the low-slung but wide

iK-2 light hatchback concept at this week’s Geneva motor show, the vehicle is 173mm longer than the Swift but a chunky 100mm wider than the Kizashi.

The concept could pave the way for a new-generation Swift while making room for the fresh Celerio compact hatch to move up a notch from the departed Alto.

While the iK-2 has a bigger footprint than the Swift, it sits lower with a 1450mm height (Swift: 1510mm).

Revealed at the Geneva show in European Auris guise and due in Australia about August, the facelifted Corolla gets more bling inside and out, with new chrome grille “wings” stretching the full width of the car and a new dash treatment with more upmarket materials.

The suspension and steering have

been tweaked to improve ride, handling and “driver involvement” compared with the current model that launched in Australia in 2012.

The company confirmed at the show that the iM-4 provides a glimpse at a possible future production soft-roader that incorporates its 4WD know-how.

“The iM-4 is our vision for a new compact 4x4 that embodies that DNA while bristling with the latest technology,” Suzuki said. “Its innovativeness, uniqueness and Suzuki’s DNA make it the iconic mini 4x4.”

By DANIEL GARDNERVOLKSWAGEN has repeated the Alltrack recipe with a second generation of the high-riding Passat-based crossover making its world debut at the Geneva motor show this week.

Like the inaugural Alltrack, the redesigned version is based on the

mid-sized Passat wagon but adds a 4Motion four-wheel-drive system, tougher body panels and 28mm to the standard vehicle’s ride height for better off-road ability.

The Haldex all-wheel-drive arrangement sends power to the front wheels until a slippery surface is encountered. Torque is then redirected in part to the back end to maintain progress off-road or pulling a boat up a wet ramp, for example.

Its new bodywork not only adds a differentiating look and better durability but also increases the vehicle’s approach and departure angle, allowing progress over steeper changes in gradient.

An elevated ride height also boosts all-terrain ability with a greater breakover angle, but added underbody panels protect the vital undercarriage if the trail becomes too rocky.

Volkswagen Group Australia public relations manager Kurt McGuiness told GoAuto the new Alltrack would be coming Down Under following a good reception of the previous model when it launched in 2012.

“The current Passat Alltrack has proved popular with Australian customers and we look forward to introducing the new model here in the first half of 2016,” he said.

2015 GENEVA MOTOR SHOW A-Z

By BYRON MATHIOUDAKISVOLKSWAGEN’S Sport Coupe Concept GTE unveiled in Geneva this week may be a precursor for the next-generation CC, but production is not scheduled to commence before 2017 at the earliest.

Growing in every dimension except for height compared with the existing Passat-derived four-door sedan, the show car also previews the German car-maker’s new styling language under the direction of Volkswagen AG head of design Walter de Silva.

“Evolution and revolution come together in the Sport Coupe Concept GTE,” Mr de Silva said. “This concept is based on Volkswagen design DNA, which has been visibly sharpened

even more. It shows how the highest-volume brand of our group is shaping the immediate future.”

The new corporate look is strongest at the front of the car, with headlights, grille and protruding ‘VW’ roundel streamlined into a single complete form featuring sharp angles and horizontal lines. ‘3D’ is the desired effect both front and rear.

Applying specifically to the show car, an extended bonnet, flattened curved

roofline silhouette and rear pillars that meld seamlessly into the ‘Kamm-back’ boot create less of a three-box sedan shape than before.

As with the existing seven-year-old CC coupe-sedan, the production Sport Concept GTE will sit between the Passat and European-market Phaeton limousine, but will be further differentiated from the former in sizing, pricing and positioning, with no shared visible panels and a substantial increase in interior space to match the larger exterior dimensions.

BMW’s Mini is in danger of becoming irrelevant at best, and something of an outdated fad at worst, because the basic recipe has remained unchanged since 2001. While the new-for-2015 5-door hatch may not entirely fix this situation, it does provide an unexpected breath of fresh air to a unique and involving proposition.

LAGONDA TARAF IN RHDASTON Martin has confirmed right-hand-drive production for its striking Lagonda Taraf, meaning the special-issue flagship sedan will be made available beyond the Middle East where it was launched and specifically targeted last year.

Aston Martin is still limiting production to just 200 vehicles, with the company saying the broader availability should ensure “quick expressions of interest from customers around the world”. However, the sedan will not be homologated for Australia.

GM Holden extends capped-price servicing schemeBy TIM NICHOLSON

HOLDEN has extended its capped-price servicing program to cover every vehicle the car-maker has ever built, stretching to 2.5 million passenger cars and light commercial vehicles across the country.

The American-owned car-maker effectively relaunched its capped-price servicing scheme under its Professional Care aftersales banner in August last year, although it has had the deal in place – covering the first three years or 60,000km of ownership, whichever came first – since 2012.

Describing its new lifetime program as the “largest of its kind in Australia”, Holden said in a statement last week that it would cover every Holden ever

produced, dating back to the first model to wear the Lion badge – the 48-215 from 1948 – to the current crop of new models that includes the VF Commodore.

The scheme officially kicked off on March 1 and is designed to ensure Holden customers are aware of the maximum price they should be paying to have their vehicle serviced by an authorised dealer.

A calculator on Holden’s website identifies the maximum amount a customer will pay for any service, by model, and Holden says the first seven services for all eligible new models will be subsidised.

By BYRON MATHIOUDAKISPEUGEOT is aiming to boost sales gradually and sustainably in Australia over the next year on the back of a new management team, revised sales and marketing strategy and an upgraded model range which kicked off last week with the 308.

Peugeot Automobiles Australia general manager John Startari said he had targeted a gradual rise in sales, up from the circa-4400-unit mark it has been stuck at for the past two years.

While refusing to divulge volume targets, one company spokesman suggested that a return to 5000 sales this year might be achievable should launch timings and supply expectations go to plan.

“Obviously we’d like to grow this year, but that’s under a sustainable model, so we’re not thinking a number per se, but we will grow this year based on our current forecasts,” Mr Startari told GoAuto at the 308 launch in Albury last week.

“If you look at the growth in the last quarter of last year and into January this year, that is part of the transition we are going through – changes in personnel, restructuring our business and our focus in the marketing.

“And with new product coming through, there will obviously be growth, but we are sowing the seeds of the future.

We are not going to splash cash, and take a business model that loses money in the first two or three years in the hope that we will recover in years four to five.

“It is a sustainable model that is paid for through free cash-flow.”

Peugeot Automobiles Australia national marketing manager Dimitri Andreatidis said he was confident the broader new 308 range will translate into significantly higher sales than the current series has managed since its October launch, with the 1.6 THP four-cylinder turbo-petrol variants addressing residual fears from more traditional brand customers about the effectiveness of the 96kW e-THP 1.2-litre turbo three-cylinder versions.

“Many customers have waited for the 1.6-litre THP engine to arrive in the Allure and Allure Premium, while others have shown some resistance towards the three-cylinder turbo, even though everybody who has driven and experienced it says it’s a terrific little

engine,” Mr Andreatidis told GoAuto.“So I think we will have to wait and

see how buyers react to the Allure and Allure Premium as well as the GT before we can safely make a call on what will be the best-selling 308. But the Allure 110kW 1.6 THP will certainly be one of the key volume sellers, for sure.”

The facelifted 508 and 3008 due this month will drive more traffic into Peugeot dealerships with upgraded drivetrains and improved styling inside and out.

Meanwhile, the new three-cylinder turbo-equipped 208 should at last give the popular Volkswagen Polo and Mazda2 a run for their money in the light-car segment when it surfaces in October – something that the current version has failed to do with just 857 sales last year and less than 1000 during its first full year of availability in 2013.

By BYRON MATHIOUDAKISPEUGEOT has a greener, smaller-output 1.2-litre three-cylinder turbo engine at the ready for the Australian 308 range should currency fluctuations put further price pressure on the French-built hatch and wagon.

With the volume-selling mid-range Active 96kW e-THP 1.2-litre petrol hatch and Allure 110kW BlueHDi 2.0-litre turbo-diesel models increasing between $500 and $1000 with the upgraded model range launched last week, Peugeot is watching where competitors such as Volkswagen and Mazda will go with their respective base Golf 90TSI and 3 Neo rivals before making a decision on the entry-level 308.

While basically the same EB-series three-cylinder turbocharged engine as found in the 96kW/230Nm e-THP, the 1.2 ‘PureTech’ S&S is a step down in terms of output and acceleration but offers improved environmental performance as well as the means for Peugeot to potentially drop its baseline price for the 308 to around $20,000.

The Euro 6 emissions-compliant engine produces 81kW of power at 5500rpm and 205Nm of torque at 1500rpm. Paired with a five-speed manual gearbox (down a ratio compared to the higher-output version), it can send the 308 from 0-100km/h in

11.8 seconds, but with the assistance of a standard automatic idle-stop system can return combined-cycle fuel economy of 4.6 litres per 100km.

Carbon dioxide emissions come in at just 107 grams per kilometre.

Peugeot Automobiles Australia general manager John Startari told GoAuto last week that pricing of the current Access 96kW e-THP – at $21,990 plus on-road costs for the manual, with auto adding $2000 – should hold firm for at least the next six months.

“The price rises were forced by the sudden movement of exchange rates, but we’ve captured it now for the time being,” he said. “If you look at the historical exchange rates, the six-month average actually has come down.

“None of the price-leader cars have moved, and that’s something we worked hard to achieve. The package is now set for the next six to 12 months unless there is a dramatic move in exchange rates.”

Underlining Mr Startari’s concerns

about getting the entry-level model mix right is the fact that the 308 has so far attracted returning Peugeot buyers rather than the fresh conquest sales he had initially anticipated.

This is evidenced by the high proportion of upper-end purchases, such as the $38,000 diesel Allure Touring wagon that is currently attracting almost one-in-three customers overall.

“At the moment we’re selling to the traditional Peugeot buyer, so it is skewing our mix to the higher end,” he said. “Our whole intention of bringing the Access grade was to appeal to a whole new market, a younger buyer, and tackle rivals.”

Peugeot Australia product manager Pavel Meck said that the small-car market is dynamic and does not stand still for long, and added that there are plans in the pipeline for different engine options to keep the brand as competitive as possible should demand dictate.

By TERRY MARTINTHE Australian Automobile Association (AAA) has appointed Michael Bradley as its new chief executive, filling the vacancy created late last year when Andrew McKellar resigned to take up a new global position with the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) in Paris.

Mr Bradley moves to the national organisation representing state automobile clubs from the Australian Petroleum Production and Exploration Association (APPEA), where he has worked as director of external affairs since 2010.

Prior to that he served for two years as a senior adviser to federal minister for resources, energy and

tourism Martin Ferguson, having previously managed media and federal political “engagement strategies” on behalf of advocacy groups and community organisations.

Mr Bradley moved into public relations in 2005 after a four-year stint as a journalist

for The Sydney Morning Herald. He has academic qualifications in

journalism and completed a Bachelor of Economics and Bachelor of Science (Resource and Environmental

Economics) at the Australian National University in 1997.

He takes up the position at the AAA in April, when acting chief executive James Goodwin will hand over the reins. Mr Goodwin will continue as director of government relations and communications.

In a statement released last week, AAA president Peter Joyce said: “The AAA board looks forward to Mr Bradley leading the AAA into the future and ensuring the views of constituent clubs and their seven million members are represented strongly in Canberra.”

secured the top honour at Volkswagen with its naming as 2014 National Dealer of the Year (DOTY) at a gala event in Melbourne.

It also took out the Provincial DOTY title among the other annual award categories, which included: Major Metro DOTY and Commercial Vehicles DOTY: Brighton Volkswagen (Vic); Metro DOTY: Alto Volkswagen (NSW); Major Rural DOTY: Jackson Volkswagen (Tas); Rural DOTY: Albany Volkswagen (WA); and

Volkswagen Financial Services Award: Kevin Dennis Volkswagen (Vic).

On hand to accept the awards were Wippells dealer principal Don Russell and general manager Brett Buckley.

Kia to resuscitate slow-selling Rondo and Soul, banks on DCT for Pro_cee’d GTBy TIM ROBSON

KIA Australia will stick with two of its slowest-selling products, the Rondo people-mover and the boxy Soul hatch, despite lacklustre sales performances over the past 12 months.

Kia Motors Australia (KMAu) chief operating officer Damien Meredith acknowledged last week that both cars needed to perform better, and that plans were in place to stimulate sales.

“I would love the Soul to have been as successful (locally) as it has been in North America, but that wasn’t the case,” he said.

“I’m not quite sure that we spent enough marketing dollars on it to get it out there. It’s different. We want to keep it and we want to develop it and we want to ensure that it sells and pays for its own way in the future. No doubt, the numbers have been disappointing but we’re going to fix that.

“I’m not quite sure we’ll call the Australian Open the ‘Kia Soul Australian Open’ but we’re going to think about those things and how we place the vehicle.”

Kia shifted just 259 units of the Soul in 2014, despite the launch of a second-generation model in February last year.

It is only available in one trim level (Si), with a 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine priced from $24,490 plus on-road costs in manual guise. Automatic adds $2000.

The Rondo, meanwhile, fared little better in the sales race, posting just 388 new registrations. Regarded internally as a compact people-mover, Rondo has only recently seen additional competitor activity join its space with the release of more premium offerings such as BMW’s 2 Series Active Tourer and Citroen’s C4 Picasso.

The Rondo starts at $30,240 plus on-road costs for the 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol Si variant.

“Rondo is, again, in a very small

segment,” said Mr Meredith. “It’s a great car. Again, very similar to Soul, we’re going to spend a little bit more money on it. We believe that, with the launch of the new Carnival, we’ll get a bit of push-forward with Rondo.

“Saying that, we’re putting things into place with Rondo in regards to spending a little bit more on it, being a little bit more targeted with its marketing and communication. Again, though, it has to stand on its own two feet.”

He was adamant that both cars would get a fair go. “They’re both in our stable of vehicles, and we want to make sure that they reach their potential.”
