In an age of globalization and rapid social changes, historical perspective is more necessary than ever. The History Department at FHSU emphasizes a global approach, looking at traditions and interactions of all world cultures from ancient times to modern industrialized nation states. The history department develops students who have the practical skills of critical thinking and analysis, curiosity, tolerance and objectivity, investigative technique, and solid writing ability. Methods of critical inquiry have provided majors with a strong base for careers in secondary education, historical research, law, medicine, business, theology, government service, military service, historic preservation, and journalism. A public history program was recently added, which focuses on public interactions with academic history, for employment opportunities in museums, libraries, archives, parks, and historical sites. The following priorities are listed in order of importance.

Endowed Professorship Recruitment and retention of qualified faculty can be a challenge. Endowed faculty positions provide recognition for exceptional teaching, research and service. An endowed professorship also serves as a stipend that can be used by a professor for research or other academic projects. The State of Kansas’ Faculty of Distinction program matches allocated earnings from these endowed funds, doubling the initial investment.

Software/Hardware Upgrades Technology changes require a 3-5 year rotating schedule of hardware replacement and software upgrades for use in teaching and research.

Student Research and Conference Fund Students at FHSU are expected to engage in a research project or internship experience as part of their degree program. This fund will help cover the cost of research-related materials and travel expenses associated with conferences.

Truman Presidential LibraryThe Department of History aims to provide a stipend for internships.

The Fort Hays State University Foundation is an independent, non-profit corporation designated by the state of Kansas to receive gifts on behalf of the university.
