The Department of Communication Disorders at Fort Hays State University offers strong undergraduate and graduate programs that prepare students for careers in speech and language pathology. Students who seek a career as a speech-language pathologist can give back to the community by helping individuals of all ages who experience communication delays and disorders. As a major, students learn about the characteristics of speech and the communication problems that can occur at any age. After they learn about the science of speech-language-hearing disorders, they have the opportunity to put classroom knowledge into practice, utilizing both traditional and new interventions with real people who present real communication disorders. In addition, the university’s Geneva Herndon Speech and Hearing Clinic provides supervised clinical experience for students, and serves Western Kansas as a resource for speech and hearing evaluation and therapy.
