“Client Relationships”
I have been thinking a lot about client relationships lately. Most of the time people ponder
relationships, it’s because they are having extreme difficulty or extremely good times. I haven’t had
either as of late, but felt the need to address this important aspect of our lives.
I am a sole proprietor… I do my own sales, my own marketing, my own PR (although with a little
help from Peplum PR), my own labor, my own invoicing, and my own….. the list goes on.
For those of you who are also small business owners, I’m sure you can relate to the never-ending
workload. We never have the time to really focus on those client relationships as we should. We are
always focusing on the next “big thing”, always the future… not so much the current.
I know in my own life there is always room for improvement, but I want to encourage others (and
myself) to really value those clients we currently HAVE! Even though they seem overwhelming at
times… with all their questions, phone calls, emails, and attention… we need to take a breath and
remind ourselves that these are the people who are making our financial life possible. They are the
ones continuing our business and will ultimately be the ones who either refer us to others, or don’t. I
know I want to be the type of business owner that always appreciates what I have while also striving
for the best possible outcome my future holds.
Trust your instincts and follow you heart… You are in control of your own destiny and remember…
if you are comfortable, you aren’t necessarily growing. Stretch yourself on a daily basis. Maybe that
means taking the time for a cup of Joe with that needy client or simply writing an “I appreciate you”
email.
Let’s thank those that keep our small businesses growing.

Hello FGI San Diego! I am so excited to say that our little newsletter (in its current form) is one year old!!! It was last year at this time that I recapped my visit to the Big Apple representing San Diego at the INTERNATIONAL conference. This year I was given the privilege to represent you as well and thus this month’s newsletter issue is a recap from that phenomenal event. Getting to meet so many amazing people from all over the world was so exciting. There were representatives of Japan, South Korea, Mexico City as well as all over the States. Talking with all of these people reminded me that FGI is indeed INTERNATIONAL. We tend to get so wrapped up in our everyday lives that we forget that we are part of something bigger, something more important, something prestigious. FGI is the only INTERNATIONAL fashion organization of its kind, started way back in the 30’s by the then-editor of Vogue and other remarkable women such as Eleanor Roosevelt. We are a part of that legacy and it feels pretty amazing to think of it in that way. So when you are out and about, perhaps having “one-of-those-days”, remember that as a member of FGI, you are part of something bigger and greater than yourself. :-) Have a fashionabulous month!!! Until next time…

WHO we are already…
The Fashion Group International is a
global non-profit association with a
network of over 5,000 dynamic
professionals of achievement and
influence from all areas of fashion
and related industries including
apparel, accessories, beauty,
publishing, retailing and interior
design.
Established in 1930, The Fashion
Group International was founded on
the idea that it takes an exceptional
woman to flourish and succeed in the
challenging world of fashion. That
year, seventeen women gathered by
Edna Woolman Chase, editor-in-chief
of VOGUE, met for lunch in New
York City. They had three things in
common: each held a job of
consequence in fashion, each
respected every member of the group
and each held a common belief.
They agreed that fashion needed a
forum for the expression and
enhancement of the American fashion
business and the increasingly
important role women played in the
industry. Ever since, the organization
has brought the best and the brightest
in the industry together in unique
ways that provide an unrivaled
support system, while facilitating the
exchange of ideas and resources.
Elizabeth Arden, Edith Head and
Eleanor Roosevelt were among the
founding members. Eight decades
later, the names have changed, but
the energy, talent and commitment
remains the same.
WHAT we do in the present…
The Fashion Group International
works to promote the advancement of
every member, while addressing
issues that affect the entire industry.
Our commitment to the industry is
evident in our proactive approach to
business. Our events provide a forum
for the exchange of ideas and
information with industry leaders on
a wide array of topics.
WHERE we are headed in the
future…
Cognizant of the ever-changing
nature of the industry, and the
increasingly turbulent nature of
business, the Fashion Group
International addresses issues
relevant to the future of the industry.
Our events encourage thinking
outside the box, both for members
and non-members alike. As we begin
the twenty-first century, the role of
our organization will be more
relevant than ever. Even conducting
“business as usual” will require
foresight and knowledge of “big
picture” issues that are the hallmark
of our events.
Global communications and the New
Media revolution are an integral part
of our commitment to being at the
cutting edge. Fashion Group
International’s online presence as
well as localized blogs and social
media is the industry’s number one
cyber-destination for a wealth of
information about fashion and
fashion-related industries. Fashion
Group International’s web site is an
ever-evolving resource for industry
professionals.
FGI Mission Statement…
The FGI mission is to be the
pre-eminent authority on the business
of fashion and design and to help its
members become more effective in
their careers. To do this, FGI
provides insights on major trends in
person, online and in print; access to
business professionals and a gateway
to the influence fashion plays in the
marketplace.
The goals of the organization
are…
To advance professionalism in
fashion and its related lifestyle
industries.
To provide a public forum for
examination of important,
contemporary issues in the business
of fashion.
To present timely information
regarding national and global trends
that have an effect on the fashion
industries.
To provide activities and programs
which enhance networking skills and
encourage interpersonal contacts so
as to further the professional, social
and personal development of
members.

Opening night of the FGI Conference in New York City was held at the gorgeous Estee Lauder Headquarters on 5th Avenue overlooking Central Park. Being in such an exquisite place, with an amazing view and mingling with all of the various regions in attendance, it was truly a fantastic night for all! It was the start to a PHENOMENAL conference!

The second night of conference, we had the distinct privilege to attend a gallery event at the Museum of the City of New York celebrating the career of Stephen Burrows. Burrows was born in New Jersey in 1943 and began designing in 1966 after graduating from the Fashion Institute of Technology. The first African-American designer to receive international acclaim, he is considered an industry legend for his innovative work in matte jersey, chiffon and velvet. Dubbed “an American original” by The New York
Times, Burrows is recognized as the designer who created the fluttery hem referred to as “lettuce edge”. In 1973, he was one of the five designers selected to represent the United States at the “Battle of Versailles” benefit fashion show, whre he and fellow Americans Anne Klein, Bill Blass, Halston and Oscar de la Renta showed alongside Parisian icons Pierre Cardin, Christian Dior, Hubert de Givenchy, Yves Saint Laurent and Emanual Ungaro. When Fashion Danced, (at the Museum of the City of New York) is a retrospective of Burrows’ career. When viewing these extraordinary clothes, it is impossible not to want to dance the night away. Add to it that Burrows himself walked us through the exhibit made a night never to forget.
