GAME16 VS. JACKSONVILLE (JAN. 9)

SCOUTING THE DOLPHINSComing off back-to-back 20-win seasons under head coach Cliff Warren, Jacksonville was slotted to finish third in the A-Sun pre-season media poll. The Dolphins' current 11-game losing streak features eight road games and has seen JU hold just two teams below 70 points during that span. An active and athletic front-court highlights the JU lineup led by forwards Glenn Powell and Delwan Graham who combine for 21.6 points and 13.7 rebounds per game. Despite being undersized at 6-foot-5, Powell ranks amongst the A-Sun best in several categories; scoring (11.7/13th), field goal percentage (.545/4th), rebounding (7.3/3rd), offensive rebounds (2.6/5th) and blocks (1.5/3rd). Graham is posting 9.9 points, 6.4 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 1.3 steals per game. Graham is in the top three on the team in nearly every category, trying to replace the shoes of three-time A-Sun Defensive Player of the Year Aaron Hardy, who graduated last year.

NEW COACH, NEW HOPESOn March 31st, the FGCU men’s basketball program got a new look for its 10th season in program history when ANDY ENFIELD was named head coach. Enfield, who spent the previous five years as an assistant with Florida State, is the second head coach in FGCU’s brief history. While at FSU, Enfield was a part of two teams that advanced to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen and back-to-back clubs that lead the NCAA in defensive field goal percentage.

BALANCED ATTACKA season-best five players reached double figures in FGCU's two wins over Toledo and Maine, while FGCU is 3-2 when four or more players reach double figures in the same game. A total of eight players have reached the double-digit plateau this season, while freshman BERNARD THOMPSON (12.2), junior SHERWOOD BROWN (11.5) and sophomore CHRISTOPHE VARIDEL (10.5) all rank in the top 25 in the A-Sun in scoring. Out of the eight dif-ferent players who have scored double figures, five have led the team in scoring at least once, including three off the bench.

HELPING HANDRanking among the leaders in the A-Sun Conference in three sta-tistical categories, freshman BRETT COMER leads the A-Sun and is fourth among all freshmen nationally in assists per game (5.4). He has reached double figures in six games, resulting in 8.7 points per game. Comer has led the team in assists in all but one game and has passed out seven or more helpers five times. Last game against UNF, Comer scored a season-high 19 points to go along with six assists and five rebounds.

WE'LL PICK YOU UPThrough 15 games, FGCU averages 27.1 points per game off the bench, a figure that results in a +5.7 margin per game. The bench has supplied a double figure scorer in 12 games, includ-ing the team's leading scorer on eight occasions, while supplying 25+ points 10 times as a unit. At SMU, sophomore CHRISTOPHE VARIDEL poured in 20 points on 6-of-7 from three-point land and turned in another 20-point game against Maine to account for the top two bench efforts. Looking further, the bench is shooting 47 percent (141-300) from the field and 45 percent (61-137) from three.

HEATING UPSophomore CHRISTOPHE VARIDEL has found his stroke that helped him finish fifth in the nation among all freshmen in 2010-11 with 78 three-pointers. Varidel leads the A-Sun in three-point per-centage (.486). He is also seventh in the A-Sun in threes per game (2.3). The Versoix, Switzerland native has made three or more treys in a game seven times this season. He has also reached double-digits six times, including a team-best two 20-point outings.

INSTANT IMPACTFGCU's freshmen class has wasted little time making an im-pact, accounting for 48 percent of the scoring, 35 percent of the rebounds and 65 percent of the assists. Led by combo guard BERNARD THOMPSON'S 12.2 points per game, freshmen ac-count for three the Green and Blue's top five scorers. Point guard BRETT COMER leads the A-Sun with 5.4 assists per game, a mark that ranks fourth among freshmen nationally and 40th overall. Comer is tied for fourth on the team in scoring (8.6) followed classmate Dante Holmes (7.9). Thompson's 12.2 points are tops among all freshmen and have come on a team-high 11 double figure outings. FILIP CVJETICANIN has reached double figures three times and is shooting 43 percent from three, good for sixth in the A-Sun. At least one of the four freshmen has scored in double figures in 13 of 15 games.

WEEKLY AWARDSFreshman BERNARD THOMPSON earned a pair of weekly awards earlier in the week. He was named the College Sports Madness A-Sun Player of the Week, while the league office named him the Newcomer of the Week last Tuesday. The award came after Thompson had 15 points and nine rebounds against Maine and followed with 13 points at Mercer.

FIELER-ING ITSophomore CHASE FIELER has reached double-digits six times this season compared to five through all of last year, and is aver-aging 6.7 points and a team-high 5.2 rebounds. Against Maine, Fieler hauled down a career-high 11 rebounds to go with 11 points and a career-best five assists for his first double-double. Fieler leads the team in both rebounds and blocks (1.2), figures that rank 17th and seventh in the A-Sun, respectively. The Parkersburg, W. Va. product also leads the team with 27 offensive rebounds.

STICKY FINGERSAside from being the league's top scoring freshman (12.2), BERNARD THOMPSON has used is long 6-foot-3 frame to his benefit on the defensive end. Thompson has a steal in 13 straight games, ranking second in the A-Sun at 2.0 thefts per game. During the current 13-game streak, Thompson has 11 multi-steal performances, highlighted by four against UNF. Thompson is on pace for 60 steals, a mark that would finish top five in single-season history.

LAST GAME: UNF Completes Comeback Over FGCU in Overtime(Box Score on Page 33)FORT MYERS, Fla.. - After overcoming a 21-point deficit in regulation, North Florida opened the overtime period with the first six points en route to closing out an 88-81 come-back win over FGCU on Saturday evening in front of 2,017 fans at Alico Arena. • The Eagles led by 21, 44-23, with under two minutes to play in the first half and took a 45-28 lead into the locker at the break after shooting 57 percent (17-30) from the field and turning 10 UNF turnovers into 21 points. • UNF took a page out of FGCU’s book from the first half, com-ing all the way back in the second half on the same type of formula. The Osprey’s used a 17-of-27 shooting performance from the field in the final frame, while forcing the Eagles into 10 turnovers to cut it to a two-point game, 73-71 with less than four minutes to play. • UNF wasted little time taking the lead in overtime, scoring the opening six points while holding the Eagles scoreless on their first six trips on the offensive end to take a 83-77 lead with 2:12 left in the extra frame. A layup by Comer broke the overtime ice for FGCU to make it 85-81, but the Eagles could only muster two more points the rest of the extra period before falling by the final outcome.

SHOOTER'S ROLL FGCU not only leads the A-Sun in three-point shooting per-centage, but also overall field goal percentage at a 46 percent clip. The Eagles have been held below 40 percent in a game just one time this season, while going 3-1 when breaking the 50-percent plateau. Only one player in the normal nine-man FGCU rotation is shooting below 42 percent.

FRESH STARTComing off a season in which he played just 84 total minutes, redshirt junior EDDIE MURRAY is thriving under the guidance of first-year head coach ANDY ENFIELD. Armed with athleti-cism and leadership, Murray is providing a youthful roster with career-highs of 7.1 points and 4.2 rebounds per game. The Fort Myers product produced his first career double-double against Toledo, going for 11 points and a career-high 14 re-bounds over 36 minutes. Murray is shooting 58 percent (40-68) from the floor over 21 minutes per game. Murray has nearly hit all the totals he put up through two full seasons in just 15 games this year.

WHAT CAN BROWN DO FOR YOUHighlighted by his first career double-double at Miami and a 20-point outing against ETSU, junior SHERWOOD BROWN has carried over a strong finish to his sophomore campaign into this season. Brown has reached double figures six times in 11 contests, ranking second on the team in both scoring (11.5) and ranking second in rebounding (5.1) - figures that rank 15th and 18th in the A-Sun, respectively. Sparked by a career-high 26 points in last year's season finale at USC Upstate, Brown finished last February (10 games) with a 11.2 scoring average - more than four points above his season mark. Brown reached double figures in each of the final four games, averaging 18.3 points while leading the team in scoring three times. Brown's strong end to last season was capped by a career-high 26 points at USC Upstate that included seven three-pointers.

SPARK PLUGSA big part of the early success of the FGCU bench has been the performances by freshman BERNARD THOMPSON and sophomore CHRISTOPHE VARIDEL off the pine. Both have also been in the starting lineup, but have turned in season-highs off the bench. Thompson has reached double figures all three games off the bench, averaging 14.7 points while shoot-ing 53 percent (16-30). Varidel's 11.3 points per game average off the pine is 3.6 points better than his average in the starting five. Varidel poured in 20 points at SMU and against Maine, 17 at Loyola Maryland and 16 against Toledo to lead the team in scoring all four times off the bench.

SECOND HALF SURGEHighlighted by freshman BERNARD THOMPSON'S 18 points at Kennesaw State and three second half performances of 15 points by three different players, FGCU has turned in some great stretches over the final 20 minutes. At Miami, FGCU tied a program D-1 record for second half points given up by limit-ing the Hurricanes to 18 points on 4-of-24 from the field. At Nebraska, the Eagles limited the Huskers to just 25 second half points. SHERWOOD BROWN (at Miami), BRETT COMER (Ave Maria) and Thompson (at Loyola) have all scored 15 points in one second half. More proof of FGCU's balance, five different players have scored double figure points in at least one second half.

2011-12 TRENDS

BLOCK PARTYSophomore CHASE FIELER finished one block shy of equaling a program single-game record against USC Upstate (Dec. 19), turning away five shots. Fieler ranks seventh in the A-Sun with 18 blocks, helping the Eagles produce 4.1 blocks per game, a figure that is second in the league.

MUSICAL CHAIRSFirst-year head coach ANDY ENFIELD has used seven different lineups through 15 games trying to find the right combination with his young team. Nine different players have started at least one game, while four freshmen have earned a starting nod. No one has started every game, while three freshmen were in the starting five each of the last seven games (3-4). At least four underclassmen have started in all but two games.

HEARTBREAK HOTELEight of FGCU's nine losses on the season have been by 10 points or less , including six by six points or less. The Eagles' seven road opponents so far this season currently all have a winning record and a combined mark of 64-31. A trio of one-point defeats in the Fort Worth/Dallas area against TCU (73-72) and SMU (65-64), and at Nebraska (51-50) headline the heartbreaking losses.

NEW-COMER OF THE WEEKAfter averaging 10.5 points, 6.0 assists, 5.0 rebounds and 3.5 steals over two games, freshman point guard BRETT COMER was named the Atlantic Sun Newcomer of the Week on Tuesday, Nov. 22. Comer's week was highlighted by his first career double of 15 points, 10 assists, six rebounds and four steals during a win over Prairie View A&M.

BIO Andy Enfield was appointed the second-ever head coach in Florida Gulf Coast men’s basketball history on March 31, 2011. Enfield will lead the program into its 10th season of existence and first as Division I postseason eligible in 2011-12. “It is with great pleasure that we welcome Andy, Amanda, and the rest of the Enfield family into FGCU, Southwest Florida, and our Eagles’ athletics family,” said Director of Athletics Ken Kavanagh. “A quality individual, Andy is a proven winner and brings to FGCU a tremen-dous wealth of experience and coaching success, on the both the collegiate and professional ranks. “In particular, he possesses a background of demon-strated commitment to excellence both on the court and in the classroom. In turn, we look forward to him providing energized daily leadership to our student-athletes, quickly getting engaged with our growing fan base and rapidly putting us in pursuit of the upper echelon of the Atlantic Sun Conference and beyond.” Enfield spent the previous five years as an assistant coach at Florida State, helping FSU to three consecutive NCAA Tournaments (2009-11), including the Sweet 16 in 2011. Enfield joined head coach Leonard Hamilton’s staff at Florida State in 2006. The Seminoles appearances in the last three NCAA Tournaments were the program’s first since 1998, as they accumulated 31 wins in ACC ac-tion over that span – second-most behind Duke – and advanced to the program’s first-ever ACC championship game in 2009. With three straight 20-win seasons to its credit, FSU advanced to the 2011 Sweet 16 in the South-west Region by defeating No. 10 Texas A&M and No. 2 Notre Dame in Chicago.

Recruiting and player development were chief among Enfield’s responsibilities at FSU where its 2010-11 roster boasted 11 top 100 recruits and a pair of McDon-ald’s All-Americans. In 2009, Basketball Times named Enfield the nation’s “Most Visible Assistant Coach” for the summer recruiting period, while ESPN The Magazine donned him one of “Five Super Assistant Coaches in Col-lege Basketball” during the 2008-09 campaign. Enfield’s prowess on the recruiting trails helped the Seminoles produce three straight top 25 classes, highlighted by the 2008 group that ranked in the top 10. A former NBA assistant with the Boston Celtics and Milwaukee Bucks, Enfield’s influence helped FSU develop five NBA draft picks over five seasons. Al Thornton (2007) and Toney Douglas (2009) were both selected in the first round and earned Associated Press All-American status while leading the ACC in scoring. In 2011, Chris Singleton became the Noles’ third first round pick in the last five years when the Washington Wizards took him with the 18th overall pick. A key ingredient to FSU’s success was its ability to play defense, as the Seminoles became the first team since the 1990-92 Georgetown clubs to lead the nation in defensive field goal percentage two straight seasons from 2009-11. In 2010-11, the Seminoles limited their op-ponents to 36.3 percent shooting from the field to lead the nation for the second year in a row. With Singleton and Douglas, FSU had the ACC Defensive Player of the Year in two of Enfield’s last three seasons, while 2010 NBA second round pick Solomon Alabi was runner-up.

COACHING EXPERIENCE• Head Coach, FGCU, 2011-Present • Assistant Coach, Florida State, 2006-11 • Assistant Coach, Boston Celtics, 1998-2000 • Assistant Coach, Milwaukee Bucks, 1994-96

Prior to his five years in Tallahassee, Enfield began his coaching career in the NBA from 1994-1996 where he served as the shooting coach for the Milwaukee Bucks and head coach Mike Dunleavy. While in Milwaukee, Enfield worked with four-time NBA All-Star Vin Baker and No. 1 overall pick Glenn Robinson. Enfield continued his NBA career as an assistant coach with the Boston Celtics under head coach Rick Pitino from 1998-2000. Enfield worked closely with then-rookie Paul Pierce who went on to win the 2008 NBA Finals MVP award. With the Celtics, Enfield increased his duties on the bench to developing game plans and scouting reports, assisting in practice strategies and offensive player development. Known for his shooting expertise, Enfield helped the Celt-ics shoot 74.5 percent from the free throw line in 1999-2000, a 5.3 percent increase from the previous year for the biggest improvement in the league. After his stint with the Boston Celtics, Enfield became a player development consultant for several NBA teams, while running his own company called “All Net Basketball” which focused on improving shooting technique and of-fensive skills. Over his time as a consultant and shooting instructor, Enfield coached more than 100 NBA players. During his collegiate playing career at Johns Hopkins University, Enfield set the all-time NCAA career free-throw percentage record with a mark of 92.5 percent (431-466). Enfield still holds nine career records at Johns Hopkins and was inducted into the school's Athletic Hall of Fame in 2001. He led the team in scoring in all four seasons en route to a program record 2,025 career points thanks to the top two single-season point totals in school history with 606 points in 1990 and 610 points in 1991.

As good as he was on the court, he was just as sharp in the classroom, as the economics major earned GTE Aca-demic All-America first team honors as a senior and second team honors as a junior. He was the first basketball player at Johns Hopkins to earn an NCAA Postgraduate Scholar-ship and was named the NABC Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 1991. Enfield and his wife Amanda, have two daughters; Aila and Lily, and son, Marcum.

GAME 1TCU-73FGCU-72Nov. 11, 2011 at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum

FORT WORTH, Texas - Despite trailing by as many as 16 early in the second half, FGCU fought all the way back and had several chances to take the lead in the final seconds, but came up short in a 73-72 season-opening loss at TCU on Friday night at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum. Freshman point BRETT COMER quickly pushed the ball up the court and executed a dribble-handoff to Brown, who knocked down a three with 4.8 seconds on the clock to make it a one-point game, at 73-72. FGCU quickly fouled Thorn on the ensuing inbound pass after a timeout to put the All-Mountain West point guard at the foul line. Thorns’ front end of the 1-and-1 missed to the right and the rebound was tipped into the corner where FGCU failed to get off a desperation shot. Three different players reached double figures for the Eagles, led by freshman BERNARD THOMPSON’S (pictured) 15 points off the bench. Thompson poured in 11 of his 15 in the first half, while adding six rebounds and four assists. The catalyst of the second half comeback, Comer had a hand in 24 of FGCU’s 41 points in the final frame. Comer finished the game with 12 points and five assists with all but two of the points coming over the final 20 minutes. Sophomore CHASE FIELER turned in a clean stat line with 12 points on 4-of-4 from the field, including 3-for-3 from long range, five rebounds, four assists and two steals.

GAME 2FGCU-79AveMaria-65Nov. 14, 2011 at Alico Arena

FORT MYERS, Fla. - Sparked by 15 second half points from freshman BRETT COMER (pictured) and SHERWOOD BROWN’S 19 points off the bench, FGCU picked up its first win under head coach Andy Enfield against Ave Maria, 79-64, in front of 1,547 fans in the home opener at Alico Arena Monday night. FGCU created its first real separation of the game midway through the final frame, going on a 17-2 run over a seven-minute period that took what was a six-point lead and turned it into a the largest edge of the game (21), 58-37, for the Eagles with 9:02 play. Brown scored 10 of his 19 points in the first half, sinking 3-of-6 from three-point land, while also adding six rebounds and three steals. It was Comer’s turn in the second half, as the Winter Park, Fla. product reached double figures over the final 20 minutes alone for the second straight game. Comer finished 7-of-10 from the field for 17 points to go along with a game-high eight rebounds and four assists. After shooting just 31 percent in the first half, the Eagles shot a sweltering 69 percent (18-26) from the floor in the second frame en route to 48 points. FGCU’s finished above 50 percent for the second consecutive contest with a 52 percent clip (31-60). FGCU took advantage of its superior size to own a 44-27 advantage on the backboard and a 34-16 edge in points in the paint.

GAME 3FGCU-68PrairieViewA&M-59Nov. 17, 2011 at Alico Arena

FORT MYERS, Fla. - Led by freshman BRETT COMER’S first career double-double and a strong second half defensive effort, FGCU picked up its second straight win with a 68-59 victory against Prairie View A&M on Thursday night at Alico Arena. For the third straight game, Comer reached double figure points in the second half alone, sparking a 12-2 run that turned a 39-33 Panther lead into a 45-41 FGCU advantage that it would never relinquish. Comer accounted for four points during the run and assisted on both three-pointers by classmate FILIP CVJETICANIN and sophomore CHRISTOPHE VARIDEL. The Eagles held a five-point lead, 59-54, with just under three minutes to play, before putting the game away with eight straight points that gave the home team its largest lead of the game (13), 67-54, and its second home win in four days. FGCU outscored Prairie View A&M 38-25 and limited the Panthers to just 8-of-36 from the field over the final 20 minutes. A trio of freshmen led FGCU in scoring with Comer’s double-double coming on 15 points, 10 assists, six rebounds and three steals over 35 minutes of action. Comer did a majority of his damage in the second half comeback, scoring 11 points and while dishing out six assists. Freshman BERNARD THOMPSON (pictured) contributed 13 points, while Cvjeticanin was perfect from the field, going 3-of-3, including two from long range, to add 10 points off the bench.

GAME 4SMU-65FGCU-64Nov. 19, 2011 at Moody Coliseum

DALLAS, Texas - Sophomore CHRISTOPHE VARIDEL (pictured) poured in a game-high 20 points and FGCU made 10 three-pointers as a team, but it wasn’t enough, as its two game-winning attempts in the final seconds came up short in a heartbreaking 65-54 loss at Conference USA foe SMU on Saturday afternoon at Moody Coliseum. The first 37 minutes of the game featured just two lead changes, but there were three over the final three minutes with the last coming on a breakaway layup by SMU’s Ryan Manuel off an FGCU turnover with 21 seconds left that gave the Mustangs a 65-54 lead. After calling a timeout, FGCU’s initial play was stopped, as Thompson had to take a fade away jumper from the top of the key that missed short. The miss caromed right to Varidel outside the right block where his put-back was to strong off the glass and glanced off the front of the rim as time expired. The one-point loss is the second of the season for the Eagles, who dropped a 73-72 decision in the season-opener at nearby TCU just over a week ago. Varidel accounted for six of FGCU’s 10 three-pointers, knocking down 6-of-7 from long range for 20 points in 25 minutes off the bench. Freshman BERNARD THOMPSON was the only other Eagle in double figures with 11 points, a game-high eight rebounds, three assists and two steals. Varidel and Thompson combined for 23 of FGCU’s 35 points in the first half.

MIAMI, Fla. - Despite holding Miami to 18 points and a 17 percent shooting clip (4-24) in the second half, FGCU couldn’t overcome an 18-point halftime deficit in a hard-fought 60-50 loss to the Hurricanes on Tuesday night at the BankUnited Center. The 18 points given up by the Eagles in the second half equals the best defensive effort over the final 20 minutes by the Green and Blue since joining Division I in 2007-08. Behind 15 points in the second half by junior SHERWOOD BROWN (pictured) and the stout defensive effort, FGCU out-scored Miami 26-18 in the final frame, but couldn’t avoid falling to 2-3 on the young season. The Eagles’ three losses have come by a combined 12 points, while Miami picked up its fourth straight win to open the season, which have all come home. After trailing 42-24 at the end of 20 minutes, FGCU quickly cut the Miami lead in half, opening the second frame on a 9-0 run that was capped by a three-pointer from Brown that forced Miami coach Jim Larranaga to call a timeout at the 15:49 mark. Brown’s three cut the Miami lead to 42-33, as the Hurricanes went the first 6:55 without a point by shooting 0-for-10 from the field. Brown added a jumper in the final minute to finish with FGCU’s final 10 points, but the Eagles couldn’t make up any ground as All-ACC guard Malcolm Grant went 5-of-6 from the line over the final 80 seconds to seal the win and halt the FGCU comeback.

GAME 6Maryland-73FGCU-67Nov. 25, 2011 at the Comcast Center

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Three players in double figures and a late push over the final 10 minutes helped FGCU rally from a double-digit deficit in the second half before falling short at Maryland, 73-67, on Friday night at the Comcast Center. Trailing by 16, 52-36, with 13:03 left, the Eagles fought back behind freshman point guard BRETT COMER, who scored 14 of his team-high 16 points in the second half. Comer’s layup with 48 seconds left cut it to a two-possession contest, at 70-66. After a pair of missed free throws from Terrell Stoglin gave the ball back to the Eagles, but a turnover in transition cost the visitors a chance to draw as close as one point. Despite being a 92 percent (23-25) shooter through the first four games, Stoglin, an ACC All-Freshman selection a year ago, made 2-of-4 from the line in the final 26 seconds, but FGCU came away with just one point over its final five possessions. Comer finished 7-of-12 from the field while adding six rebounds and three assists over a team-high 32 minutes. Fellow freshman BERNARD THOMPSON (pictured) came off the bench for 12 points, marking the fifth time in six games the bench has supplied a double figure scorer. Thompson added seven rebounds, three assists and three steals. For the sixth straight game, FGCU won the battle on the boards, finishing with a 42-37 edge, including 17 offensive caroms.

GAME 7LoyolaMaryland-77FGCU-74Nov. 27, 2011 at Reitz Arena

BALTIMORE, Md. - After making 4-of-5 from long range over the first 39 minutes of the game, sophomore CHRISTOPHE VARIDEL’S game-tying three-point attempt with six seconds left was blocked, putting an end to furious second half comeback by FGCU as it fell short at Loyola University Maryland on Sunday, 77-74, at Reitz Arena. Varidel and freshman BERNARD THOMPSON came off the bench to score a game-high 17 points each, but it wasn’t enough as the Eagles dropped their fourth in a row. FGCU, who was playing its fifth road game, has lost five games by a combined 21 points, including three by three points or less. Varidel and Thompson’s big day ignited the FGCU bench that produced 44 points, including 33 of the team’s 50 in the second half. It marked the fourth time this season that the Eagles’ leading scorer has come off the bench. Thompson scored 15 of his season-high 17 in the second half, including nine straight that cut the Loyola lead from 13 to four with 14 minutes left. Varidel’s 17 came on 4-of-6 from three and a perfect 5-of-5 from the free throw line. Both teams entered the day having out-rebounded all of their opponents, and it was FGCU that finished the fast paced 40 minutes with a 36-33 edge on the glass. Making his first start since 2009-10, redshirt junior EDDIE MURRAY (pictured) set career-highs with 11 points and a game-high eight boards.

FORT MYERS, Fla. - Junior SHERWOOD BROWN (pictured) scored a game-high 20 points and FGCU led for the final 37 minutes en route to a 72-63 win over ETSU in its Atlantic Sun Conference opener on Saturday at Alico Arena. The Eagles jumped out to an eight-point lead at the half and held on to win their A-Sun opener for the third time in five years. FGCU’s win snapped a five-game losing streak against the Buccaneers. Led by Brown’s 7-for-10 night from the field, FGCU shot 54 percent (27-50) from the floor, marking the third time this season it has shot over 50 percent in a game. On the flipside, the Eagles won the turnover battle, 16-14, and limited ETSU to a 35 percent (22-63) shooting clip. The 20-point game was the second of Brown’s career and he was joined in double figures by sophomore CHASE FIELER, who had 12 points. A majority of Brown’s 20 points came beyond the arc, knocking down 4-of-5 from deep. Fieler’s 12 points were joined by a team-high eight rebounds and four assists. FGCU’s bench came into the game averaging 30 points per game, but was limited to a season-low 17. On the bright side, freshman BRETT COMER came off the pine and dished out 10 assists for the second time this season. Sophomore CHRISTOPHE VARIDEL accounted for nine of the bench points, drilling 3-of-6 from long range. Varidel is 19-of-37 from long range on the year.

GAME 9Nebraska-51FGCU-50Dec. 7, 2011 at the Devany Center

LINCOLN, Neb. - Dylan Talley’s runner with 10.4 seconds left gave Nebraska a 51-50 lead and FGCU failed to get off the potential game-winning shot, as the Eagles dropped a heartbreaker in Big Ten country on Wednesday night at the Devaney Center. The Eagles trailed 49-47 with less than three minutes to play until sophomore CHRISTOPHE VARIDEL’S 100th career three-pointer gave the visitors a one-point edge, 50-49 (1:23). After a stop on the defensive end, sophomore CHASE FIELER had a chance to give the Eagles a two-possession lead, but his three from the right corner rimmed out. FGCU stopped Nebraska’s initial play to get the ball inside to Jorge Brian Diaz so Talley retrieved the ball at the right wing and drove the baseline for the runner with 10.4 seconds left. Following a timeout with 7.1 seconds on the clock, FGCU in-bounded the ball from in front of its bench to freshman BERNARD THOMPSON who used a stagger screen to drive into the lane. Thompson kicked the ball out to Varidel on the right wing, but he never got the shot off as the buzzer sounded. For the fifth time this season, FGCU’s top scorer came from the bench, as junior SHERWOOD BROWN (pictured) had 14 points on 6-of-10 from the field over 31 minutes. Freshman FILIP CVJETICANIN also came off the pine, knocking down a quartet of threes to account for all 12 of his points.

GAME 10USCUpstate-80FGCU-75Dec. 19, 2011 at Alico Arena

FORT MYERS, Fla. - Freshman Ty Greene scored a season-high 21 points for the second straight game and redshirt sophomore Ricardo Glenn notched a double-double to lead USC Upstate to an 80-75 Atlantic Sun win over FGCU in a tightly played contest at Alico Arena on Monday night. In a game that featured nine lead changes and seven ties, neither team held a lead of more than five points until late in the second half when the Spartans used an 8-0 run to take the largest lead of the game (10), 68-58, with 4:47 left to play. Back-to-back three-pointers by junior SHERWOOD BROWN separated by just 14 seconds with under a minute to play quickly trimmed a nine-point Upstate lead down to 74-71. Unfortunately, for the Eagles that would be as close as they would come, as the Spartans grew the lead back to three possessions with 10 seconds to play en route to handing FGCU its first home loss of the season. Four players reached double figures for FGCU, led by 16 points from freshman BERNARD THOMPSON. Thompson scored 12 of his points in the second half, going 6-of-9 from the field to finish in double-digits for a team-best seventh time this season. Fellow freshman DANTE HOLMES (pictured) finished with a season-high 15 points, becoming the eighth player to reach double figures this year. Holmes’ 15 points highlighted a 30-point night from the bench.

GAME 14FGCU-62KennesawState-55Jan. 4, 2012 at Convocation Center

KENNESAW, Ga. - Behind a season-high 22 points, including 18 in the second half, from freshman BERNARD THOMPSON (pictured), FGCU picked up its first road win of the season with a 62-55 A-Sun victory at Kennesaw State on Wednesday night. Thompson knocked down 5-of-6 from long range and made four clutch free throws down the stretch en route to his 22 points, which are the most scored by an FGCU player this season. The reigning A-Sun Newcomer of the Week, Thompson’s team-high 11th double figure outing and first career 20-point game came in front of a large crowd of family and friends. Redshirt junior EDDIE MURRAY was the only other Eagle to finish in double figures with a career-high 12 points. Entering the game second in the A-Sun in assists, freshman BRETT COMER passed out eight assists with just two turnovers. As a team, FGCU shot 46 percent (19-41) from the field and knocked down 9-of-21 from three-point land in a slow paced game that saw both teams work the shot clock. The game featured just 50 rebounds, as the Eagles held a slight 26-24 edge. Kennesaw State finished with a 45 percent clip (20-44) from the floor, but had 17 turnovers and shot 11 less free throws than the Eagles. The Eagles turned in a terrific defensive effort against A-Sun leading scorer Markeith Cummings who failed to score a point over the first 26:39 of the contest and finished with just five for the game.

GAME 15NorthFlorida-88FGCU-81Jan. 7, 2012 at Alico Arena

FORT MYERS, Fla. - After overcoming a 21-point deficit in regulation, North Florida opened the overtime period with the first six points en route to closing out an 88-81 comeback win over FGCU on Saturday evening in front of 2,017 fans at Alico Arena. The Eagles led by 21, 44-23, with under two minutes to play in the first half and took a 45-28 lead into the locker at the break after shooting 57 percent (17-30) from the field and turning 10 UNF turnovers into 21 points. UNF took a page out of FGCU’s book from the first half, coming all the way back in the second half on the same type of formula. The Osprey’s used a 17-of-27 shooting performance from the field in the final frame, while forcing the Eagles into 10 turnovers to cut it to a two-point game, 73-71 with less than four minutes to play. UNF wasted little time taking the lead in overtime, scoring the opening six points while holding the Eagles scoreless on their first six trips on the offensive end to take a 83-77 lead with 2:12 left in the extra frame. A layup by Comer broke the overtime ice for FGCU to make it 85-81, but the Eagles could only muster two more points the rest of the extra period before falling by the final outcome. Freshman BRETT COMER (pictured) led the way for the Eagles with a season-high 19 points, six assists and five rebounds.
