The Northern I l l inois Conference welcomes our
new Bishop Sally Dyck. The Episcopacy Committee
assigned Bishop Dyck to the NIC for a four
year term during the North Central Jurisdictional
Conference in Akron, Ohio on July 1 9, 201 2.
Bishop Dyck was elected to the episcopacy in Davenport, Iowa,
in 2004 and assigned to the Minnesota Annual Conference
where she has served the last eight years.
“I 'm delighted that I am being assigned to the NIC. I look forward
to the both the joys and the challenges of being in such a diverse
annual conference of the United Methodist Church,” said Bishop
Dyck. She succeeds Bishop Hee-Soo Jung who has been
assigned to serve the Wisconsin Annual Conference after eight
years as Bishop of the NIC.
Born in Ritzvi l le, Washington into a Mennonite family, Bishop
Dyck joined the United Methodist Church as a young adult. She
graduated magna cum laude from Boston University College of
Liberal Arts with a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science
and magna cum laude from Boston University School of
Theology. She received a certificate from the Ecumenical
Institute which is a joint program of the World Council of
Churches and the University of Geneva, Switzerland. She was
ordained in the East Ohio Annual Conference. She also
received a Doctor of Ministry from United Theological School,
Dayton, OH, in Black Church Studies as a Bishop James S.
Thomas fel low.
Bishop Dyck served as a director of the United Methodist
Church’s Board of Global Ministries (1 999-2004), chairing the
Issue 1
Personnel Committee. In February 2006, she was elected to the
Central Committee of the World Council of Churches. Throughout
her service in the wider church, her mission has been to direct and
empower the church to transform the world through its cal l ing and
witness. Sally's personal mission statement is taken from the
communion l iturgy: ". . .one in Christ, one with each other, and one in
ministry to the world."
She is an advocate for the United Methodist Church’s Imagine No
Malaria effort which is working to end preventable deaths from this
disease in Africa. “I look forward to discovering how the NIC can be a
part of the partnership in el iminating death from the poverty-related
disease of malaria, ” she said. “I hope we can make a significant
contribution to the effort. ”
Bishop Dyck said she wil l also be committed to the ongoing efforts of
Harvest 2020. “I am very supportive of starting new congregations
and faith communities and hope that we can find more ways to
revital ize existing congregations.”
She is also looking forward to l istening and discerning with
leadership and congregations about the future needs of the NIC. “As
I often say, I get my vision through my ears as I l isten to others and
then check with leadership what I 've heard in terms of direction.”
In addition, the spiritual discipl ines of the Christian tradition are a
vital grounding to her faith. She begins her day with prayer, Bible
study, and a 3-6 mile run. She works out about 2-3 times a week.
“Over the years I have had core principles that are at the heart of my
ministry. Social and personal hol iness are central to my life, faith,
and ministry as are holy, healthy habits of body, mind and soul. ”
Bishop Dyck is married to Ken Ehrman. Copyright from NIC eNews.
