"Bud" Miller was a native of Fort

Wayne, Ind. After two years at In-

diana University, he entered the army

air corps as an aviation cadet in 1937.

Failing to complete his training, he

went into business, but in 1941 he en-

Returning to the States. Dick called

to Phi Gamma Delta. Later his story,

"How We Bombed Tokyo," appeared

in this magazine.

The first NavyCross was awarded post-humously toEnsign Harald Jensen Christopher(Northwestern '41), who was killedat Pearl harbor.A graduate of the Naval Academy.

Commander Leslie carved his name inAmerican history in the Battle of Mid-way. The Navy itself in its citationtells the story:For extraordinary heroism as command-ing officer of a bombing squadron in action

against enemy Japanese forces in the Battleof Midway on June 4, 1942. Leading hissquadron in a vigorous dive-bombing assaultagainst Japanese naval units, CommanderLeslie, in the face of concentrated anti-air-craft fire and powerful fighter opposition,Pressed home his attack with courageous ag-gressiveness and utter disregard for his ownpersonal safety. His capable initiative andinspiring leadership contributed to the highstate of combat efficiency which enabled hissquadron to score at least five direct hits onan enemy aircraft carrier and other vessels. His conscientious devotion to duty was inkeeping with the highest traditions of theUnited States naval service.

In a recent letter to THE PHI GALMA DELTA Commander Leslie said, "Ifrequently meet some of the brotherand it is alvvzys a great pleasure. I amalways most thankful if they maketheir identity known to me if I am irtheir area."

Colonel Hobart R. Gay (Knox '17)has been awarded the Silver Star for

gallantry in action on November 8.1942, when he passed through bomb-

ing and hostile infantry fire to reachFrench officials in Casablanca.

Brother Gay attended the first offi-cers' training school at Fort Sheridanin 1917, won his commission andserved in the First World War. He hasbeen in the army since then.

The Navy's Silver Star has beenawarded to Captain Nikolai S. Steven-

son ( Columbia '40) of the marine corpsreserve for gallantry in the Guadal-

canal campaign.The following temporary citation

has been issued by the commander of

the South Pacific Force of the United

States Pacific Fleet:

For distinguished service in action against

the enemy during the hostile attacks in the

Tenaru sector, Guadalcanal, on August 21,

1942. With conspicuous gallantry and intre-

pidity Lieutenant Stevenson brilliantly led

and directed the men under his command in

their assault on an enemy machine gun unit

of 37 men. By quickly surrounding and isolat-

ing the enemy unit, his men prevented it from

delaying the attack of the main body. As the

surrounded enemy advanced to attack, with

an utter disregard for his own personal safe-

ty, he skillfully directed the ensuing action

and personally disposed of the enemy leader.

The entire Japanese unit was killed or cap-

tured. Quickly reorganizing his company he

moved into the route of withdrawal of the

enemy, pro enting its escape. Largely be-

cause of his valorous action a signal victory

was achieved, resulting in the destruction

of the entire enemy main body.

Known then as Nikolai Stevenson

Stanoyevich, Nick was head of Omega

Chapter at Columbia and represented

it as delegate at the New York Ek-

klesia in 1940.He was commissioned a second

lieu-

tenant at Quantico in February, 1941,

advanced to a first lieutenancy in Feb-

ruary, 1942, and made a captain on

September 21 of the same year while

still on Guadalcanal.

Our second American Soldiers'Medal, for heroism not involving ac-tual combat with the enemy, has beenwon by Lieutenant Elmer J. Gedeon(Michigan '39), who rescued a fellowcrew member trapped in the burningwreckage of an army bomber.Elmer, former President of Alpha

Phi Chapter and an outfielder for theWashington Senators, was navigatorof the bomber, which crashed in a take-off from the municipal airport in Ra-leigh, N. C., last August. The citation said that LieutenantGedeon, after extricating himself, re-

entered the burning plane and removeda corporal whose back and leg werebroken. The Fiji hero received brokenribs, severe shock and burns."The heroism displayed by Lieuten-ant Gedeon on this occasion reflectsgreat credit upon himself and the mili-tary service," the citation observed.

It has previously been reported inthese columns that Colonel Cecil E.

Silver Star decoration has now beenmade public by the War Department. It reads :

On the night of April 2nd 119421 the ahoy.crew [including the then Major Comb.:initiated operations by the United t'• •Army Air Forces in this theatre agair •Japanese by attacking warships at P07Blair, Anadam Islands. Their coolness dark, the bombing raid which was made at km%altitude under intense anti-aircraft fire asopposed by enemy fighters resulted in direrhits on an enemy cruiser which wereserved to be followed by two explosions.

But, said he, the Americanshave discovered _laps are not supermen, andnow "they're just looking for the Japs."A veteran of 26 years in the corps and aro of Belleau Wood in World War LIonel Hunt. interviewed at navy public'ations headquarters at 90 Church St., said• marines were still "the same breed of

337

cats, but a little smarter. They're tough andthey can take it."

Colonel Hunt did not minimize the Japs.In the first onslaught, on August 7, theAmericans closed in on one batch, he recalled."Rather than give up," he said, "two or threehundred of them walked into the ocean anddrowned themselves."The Japs were taken by surprise, Colonel

Hunt reported. For two days before landing.it was foggy. The invading task force slidaround the north cape of the island "and wetook them with their pants down.-

In fact, Colonel Hunt disclosed, when themarines landed, they found a radio messagesent by the Guadalcanal garrison to anotherJap outpost which had inquired about the

fleet off that Solomon island. "It must beour task organization arriving ahead of

time," the message read.

-It was very evident to us after we tookGuadalcanal." Colonel Hunt went on. "that

the Jap went in to stay. He had no idea he'd

ever be ousted, and from what we've heard

in broadcasts, he's very much upset about it,

and says he's going to take it back.

"He had erected two power-houses, had an

electric light plant running, plenty of food —

rice and fish heads for the soldiers — ice-

boxes and warehouses full of beer. And the

beer came in handy."

Asked how the Americans liked Jap brew,

Colonel Hunt chuckled: "Well, it was wet"

"Much of our fighting out there was jungle

fighting," he said. "It was just like the old

Indian warfare, only with modern weapons.

It was that close-in stuff, where you've got

to use your wits to stay alive.

"One of the difficulties we confronted was

the fact that the Jap never fights in the day-

time unless he has to. But the young Ameri-

can is the best potential soldier in the world.

When he got over his first stage fright he

outplayed the Jap at his own game."

So close were the lines that on one occa-

sion a Jap soldier piled into the same foxhole

with some marines. The Americans soon

spotted him as "all Japs smell like goats,"

he said, and a marine disposed of the intruder.

The tales of the marine aviators, Colonel

Hunt reported, read like dime novels. One

day 24 Jap bombers and a score of Zeros

flew over."Eight of our men went up,- he

added.

"They knocked down 10 bombers and 9 Zeros,

and they all came back.

"Another day 15 planes flew over. Five ofour men went over and knocked down all15, and they all came hack."The field we had was like a corner lot.No hangars. We had to hide the planes under

They tear a wing off one andput it on another, and they are up again."We knocked down 10 to 1 every time andthe reason is that we have a better man inthe pilot's seat. Our pilots tell us the Tapsare now putting in their second-string pilots.

The reason they can tell is that these fellowsare not so daring."

Colonel Hunt said in 47 days the Guadal-canal troops had been shelled from the air38 days and attacked from the sea on 23.They've knocked down 450-odd Jap planesover Guadalcanal, 800 in the whole Solomons'area. And they're still in there. And theyalways will be for the duration.
