Message from the President

It’s been a rough four months so far as President. My Board of Director and I have overcome some tough obstacles. At the beginning of our term, the Finance Committee stated that if we continue on this same path, we will have to close the doors to the I.A.S.C. by September. I am happy to announce that through the determination of the Board and our Finance Committee along with Chef Tim, we now, for the second month in a row, are showing a positive cash flow! Now, on a sad note, I am sorry to announce Carol Minotti (Bubbles to many of us) has resigned from the position of Social Committee Director. Bubbles has run many fund-raisers and Dinner Dances which has contributed to our success. I am also sorry to announce that my wife, Connie DiGiulio, has had to resign from the position of Banquet Coordinator due to a family member’s illness. Connie also was instrumental in contributing to the clubs success. Thankfully, Virginia Esposito has graciously stepped up for this position. Now, getting back to the Social Director: Mickey Logemann has accepted the challenge for October, but cannot take over full-time. I know we have a lot of talented members at the I.A.S.C. I’m looking for this talent to please come forward and step up for this position. This is key to keeping the I.A.S.C. moving forward in the right and positive direction. The Board feels we were falsely accused on some issues that were brought up at the August 21st, 2013, General Meeting. Please be part of the solution and not simply part of the problem. The Board and I would like to thank our Finance Committee: Frank Morelli, Tom Mayne, John Scifo and Brad Sanguinetti for the countless hours that they put in to make sure the I.A.S.C. is well organized and running efficiently. Proof to all of their hard work was in the Barnier and Webber Accountant Review Results. THANKS GUYS! I would like to express thanks to Louie Monico and Ozzy Gallucio for coming forward when asked to volunteer on Mondays for the Bingo Set-Up. Thanks also to Ben Locastro for the many behind-the-scenes functions he volunteers for in our club. I, and the Board, would like to personally thank each and every member and guest who supports us by attending member nights, Dinner-Dances, fund-raisers, etc. I, personally, also want to thank my Vice President, Joe Minotti and my entire Board of Directors for helping me tremendously while I have been distracted with a family member’s illness. Please don’t forget our September and October events and Dinner-Dances …. Come out and support YOUR Club!

Respectfully submitted,

Pete DiGiulio, President “When life throws you a curve… lean into it...and stay positive.”

Cut the President’s Hair! Would you like to see Pete with shorter hair? Well if the answer is YES!, you may get that opportunity at the Malt Shoppe Memories. In exchange for some hefty donations to the Stewart F. Meyer Hospice House, he will be willing to do just that. So, if you are planning on attending, bring your checkbook. Of course cash is always accepted!

GIACOBBE (JAKE) LA MOTTA Jake was a middle-light-heavyweight boxing contemporary of Rocky Marciano, a heavyweight and Rocky Graziano a middleweight and welterweight. All three were only two to three years apart in age. However, because of their weight, they never met in the ring. Jake was born in the Bronx on July 10, 1921. When he was a teenager his father forced him to fight to entertain neighborhood residents. When he won, the spectators threw money into the ring and his father would collect and use it for family expenses. By the age of nineteen he turned professional. When it came time to go into the military during WWII the army rejected him because of a mastoid operation in one of his ears. His boxing career consisted of 106 fights with ninety-three wins, of which thirty were knockouts; he had four draws and nine losses. He confessed that he threw one fight against Billy Fox November 14, 1947 to gain favor with the Mafia, but the fight was such that he could have knocked Billy out in the first round. Billy looked drunk and it was clear to anyone in the audience he threw the fight. The Commission withheld the purse and Jake was suspended for a period. The most notable fights that Jake had were with Sugar Ray Robinson. The two fought six times, Jake winning four times. Jake was a World Champion and lost his title to Sugar Ray. After losing his title, he moved up to light heavy weights division. He continued to fight, losing and wining, but it was clear he was on the downside of his boxing career. He quit boxing; opened a bar in the Bronx, supported baseball of which he was an avid fan. He moved to Miami, opened a bar there in 1958. That year he was arrested and convicted for prostituting a teenage girl. He spent six months in prison including time on the chain gang. He claimed he was innocent. He became a stage actor; a stand-up comedian, and acted in films and in television shows. One popular television program was Car 54 Where Are You? He was married seven times producing six children. The movie, The Raging Bull was about him and Robert DiNero played him. An amusing point is, Robert, to fit the role to play an older Jake, needed to gain weight; to fulfill this requirement he went to Paris, France for three months and wined and dined and gained the necessary sixty pounds.

Jake at 93, is still active mainly in going on speaking and autographing circuits. He has published several books about his career. He lives in New York, Florida and Arizona.
