Sketching is a rough drawing representing the chief features of an object

often made as a primary study. It can also be replaced words and long paragraph

writing yet easily understandable. Currently, I am taking Foundation in Natural and

build environment course as I am pursuing to architecture course in future. This task

is beneficial me as it will sharpen my drawing skill which I seldom have the chance to

draw during my high school years. In addition, it also helps me to translate imagery

from my mind onto paper. This process essay is about how I sketch out my kitchen

utensil from a different perspectives.

As I was at the kitchen, I look around for a utensil to sketch on yet nothing

have caught my eye but not for long, I noticed a granite mortar and pestle beneath

the sink and I was fascinated by the antiquated look of it. It looks like an ancient tools

brought to modern times because of the natural colour of the granite which is

greyish-black in colour which make it outstanding and different from other utensil.

The surface of the mortar was smooth but the outer surface was uneven and rough.

The temperature of the mortar and pestle was slightly cooler than the environment

however it had an unbearable weight when I was trying to lift it. At the same time, I

scented a strong odour from a combination of garlic and herbs made me recall back

of my childhood life when I enjoyed observing my grandmother crushing and

grinding the chillies and garlics using mortar and pestle. Besides that, the sound

produced when using pestle to crushing the ingredients was extraordinary. Mortar

and pestle is impractical utensil nowadays most people uses electric spice grinders

and food processors to minimize the duration. It can be handy for everything from

cracking peppercorns and crushing tender herbs to making pesto. Therefore, I

decided to sketch on mortar and pestle because I find it interesting and mysterious

since I was young due to the figure and appearance.

Firstly, I arranged my belongings on my table in order to have a bigger space

so that I can get comfortable as I was going to start sketching. Secondly, I needed to

prepared stationaries to sketch the mortar and pestle such as A4 paper and pencil. I

began to observed the mortar and pestle at different perspectives to get a better

view of it. Next, I used a 2B pencil to sketch the outline of it as for 6B pencil which is

darker in colour is used for shading. As I was drawing, I did countless mistake

especially when there was circular shape thus to correct my mistake I uses eraser

and redraw again. I have to pay more attention on the shadow to give the mortar and

pestle a three-dimensional form. It was complicated since I have to observe the

texture which is natural rock colour pattern.

After the sketch, I had to improved on the texture on the contrary the mortar

was slightly stained therefore I have to sketch the effect of the stain. There was a

few shading on the sketch to indicated that the utensil was stained and had been

used for years. In addition, I needed to use 6B pencil to shade the different area to

present the different lightning and the stain on the mortar. However, using pencil to

shade did not appeared to be realistic as a result, therefore I used my finger to rub

against the shade to gave it more vivid appearance.

Finally the sketch was complete, throughout the process of sketching I

managed to complete the sketch in about an hour. It was not completed in a short

time because I need to observed in many of aspects and to make the sketch

appeared more realistic. Having my sketch completed, I was feeling exhausted yet

contented because I used lots of effort doing the sketch. In fact, I would like to it

again by using different elements or objects so that I can improve on my sketching

skill.
