    We are starting a new year witha considerable change in clubIeailership. Last year was arlexcellent year. If my memoryserves me half-well, we weresuccessful at ever5rthing we put on.Tha*s again to all of you whoworked to make our events sosuccessful.

    To keep us on the right track,we must continue to get new peoplein all jobs. I have felt, in the past,that too small a number ofmembers had been carying theclub. This year, we are fortunatein having new people in positionsother than on theBoard-of-Directors. This is veryencouraging to me personally.

    These new people are in positionssuch as race director, pa.rtycoordinator, and inter-clubrepresentative. I'd like to see moreof this. None of these people werecoereed to take on these jobs. It isnot a life's commitment for anyone of them either. Lets see moreof you come forward to help out.Helping out will give you a greaLerappreciation of what this club is allabout.     Who is Fred Brown? Fred is thefounder of the P-to*P Relay and isstill the chief organizer. If you spyan elalerly B0 years youngenthusiastic gentleman at the finishwho is tallying results, issuingmedals, and looks well in charge ofthings, that's Fred. He is also oneof the founding fathers of theNorth Medford Club, one ofMassachusett's oldest.

    Because no one in their rightmind would attempt to certify thecourse by walking the distance wiLha measuring wheel, we can safelysay the race is about 8l miles Iongand consists of 7 change overpoints. The race kicks off at dawnin Plymouth across from "TheRock" and presents minor chaosearly on as runners, friends, andassorted transportation sort oneanother out at change over points.Usually there is feverish action asone or two runners approach thechange over, each looking for theirrespective teammate among the150 rurners.     NO BRAIN, NO GAIN

    Whether you're a weekendjogger, or a world class nrnner, youcan more easily achieve yourobjectives if you use the principlesof reinforcement discovered bybehavioral psychologists. Someimportant principles are:

    o The more immediate thereinforcemenl the mor€effect ive.

    o Breaking-up a behavior (orobjective) into clearly definedsubcomponents (orapproximatiorx) a:rdre in fo rc ing (o r shap ing) them ismore effect ive thar *ait ingfor the ultimate beharior tooceur full-blown thenreinforcing it.

    o A behavior that is more likelyto occur than another can beuseal to reinforce the other.

    Lets apply these principles toimproving your nnning. Take aclear-cut objective like running afaster l0-kilomete6.

    First, lets brcak it up intocomponents. This is where speedwork eomes in. To run 6.2 miles at

    your ta.rget pace you must be ableto n:n I mile, 2 miles, 3 miles, ete.at that paee or faster. If youcannot run even a mile at yourtarget pace your objeetive isprobably too ambitious.

    Use the first workout to establisha baseline. Run as many mileintervals as you can (up to 6) atabout 5 to I0 seconds faster thanrace (or target) pace with a fullrecovery in between. Next, workyour way up adding a mile repeatuntil you can do the full six.

    Once that's fairly easy, beginreducing the rest. If at any point itgets too difficult, go back a runguntil you can hardle it, thenproceed to reduce the recoveryagain. When you can do lheworkout with very little recovery(say less than 30 second io$ youshould be ready to race,

    Even lhough you won't have anyrecovery in the real race,remember you will be running aboutI0 seconds per mile sLower. Youwill be more psyched up by thecompetition so make sure you restfor the race, take plenty of waterduring the race, ard keep on evenpace as you do in your workouts.

    You've probably seen this type ofprogram before. The notion ofusing speedwork to build up to atarget pace is not new. But, wecan go one step further by apPlyingimmediate reinforeement so youcan make it through the program.

    First define some clear,measurable milestones, Forexample, doing the full set of 3miles, then 4 miles, then 5 miles ofrepeats at 5 to I0 seconds fasterthan race pace with full recovery.Then try reducing the recovery toabout a half mile or about a -1minute jog. Once you've masLeredthat, try reducing the reeovery toabout a quarter mile or about a 2rn inu te jog . Ther t i1 '1 1 ' , i11r ' i11q l f ; r 'cr'coverJ to e ll0 or i}|Jut e Iminute jog, etc.

    Nexl decide on some rewards togive yourself for meeting eachmilestone. For examPle, buY thatalbum, book, or the new ear Youhave always wanted. Or, if there issomething you like to do a lot, likedrinking beer, make it contingentupon makin6 the next objective. Alittle ileprivation never hurtanyone. Actually you can even usemnning as if its something you liketo do. Say going out on long runswith a group of friends is one of the

    times you enjoy running the most.You can use it to reinforce a typeof running you enjoy less, Iikespeedwork.

    Although progress, inand of 1-,itself is reinforcing, withoutbreaking your ultimate obieetive upinto a number of smaller objectives-- each with it's own little "pot ofgold" -- you might not see enoughprogress to sustain your efforts.
