On Tuesday June 14th Scott McKain delivered his speech at the first gen-eral session.
He talked about his time as a child working in a small general store with his mom and dad to the time he rode in a cab that was driven by “Taxi Terry”.
Working with his family in that small general store, he explained the hardships placed upon the family when a supermarket had taken all of their business. He talked about a man who came into their store because he believed Scott’s family liked him.
Mr. McKain talked about when he rode in a taxi cab which was com-
pletely different from any taxi he had ever rode in before. He explained that the man who was named, “Taxi Ter-ry”, found a way to make everyones cab ride enjoyable by telling them the area’s weather. Mr. McKain said this special effort made the cab a success.
Mr. McKain urged students that suc-cess was to try something different and that success is to face challenges that come from changes or fear. He said that success isn’t just from mon-ey and awards but what you can do to better yourself.
McKain served as the 1973-74 Indi-ana State FFA President, as well as the 1974-75 National.

Honorary Degree RecipientsFour people agriculture education and
FFA advocates were named as Honor-ary FFA Degree Recipients.
Sue Ellspermann, Scott Wheeler, Sarah Furthmiller and Doug Walker were
recognized. During her three years as Lieutenant Governor, Ellspermann was engaged in several projects in regards to FFA and agriculture education. She hosted a luncheon for schools interested in start-ing an agriculture program, worked with the Read to Feed initiative with Heifer International and her “Listen to Learn” tour touched 92 counties within the state putting her face-to-face with many lead-ers within the agriculture community.
Wheeler has been the production manager for State Convention
since 2008. Without his help “behind the scenes”, the seamless transitions of lighting, video and sound would not be possible. Wheeler also handles all the py-rotechnics of the convention’s production.
Furthmiller and Walker are both rec-ognized for being outstanding agri-
culture educators. Furthmiller has taught for 10 years at Columbia City and has produced numerous state champions on both individual and team levels. During her time, Columbia City FFA has been a Gold Rated Chapter for the past 10 years. She has been the advisor to eight District Officers, two District Presidents, two Sec-tion Directors, and one State Officer.
With 24 years of teaching at Delphi, Walker has produced over 100
Hoosier Degree recipients and 50 Amer-ican Degree recipients. He has served on numerous committees within the Indi-ana FFA and the Indiana Association of Agriculture Educators, as well as worked on projects at the Indiana FFA Center in Trafalgar.
The Honorary Degree is to recognize teachers who have created high-qual-
ity agricultural education programs which inspire and motivate their students to strive for success and individuals who have provided exceptional service on a national level to agriculture, agricultural education, or FFA.
