July 5, 2020 Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Live-stream Mass—Please join us as we continue to live-stream Mass at 5:00 p.m. on Saturdays. You may go to the parish website: www.rocklincatholic.org and you will see the link on the front page.

These live-streamed Masses are also available on You Tube.

If you see “closed captioning” on your screen during the live-streamed Masses, it is turned ON your device. It is not coming from the live-stream feed. The translation is not always accurate and it can be a distraction.

During This Time, as we Continue to “Shelter in Place”, we would like to remind you, our parishioners, that we are here for you! If you are in need of groceries or

medication to be picked up for you, we have a volunteer parishioner right in your neighborhood willing and able to help with this! Please call Sarah Peterson in the Parish Office at 916-624-5827, Ext 201 and leave a message or email [email protected].

In light of the COVID-19 Pandemic, 1. The Church will be open Monday—Friday from 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM. for those who wish to have a quiet place for personal prayer. The Church will be closed on Saturdays to clean and sanitize for each Mass.

2. The Chapel will be closed. 3. The Sacrament of Reconciliation will be offered from 3:30-4:15 PM on Saturdays in front of the Church under the Oak Tree. Please practice social distancing measures while waiting in line.

4. All Parish Offices will remain closed at this time and staff will be working remotely. We are here for you should you need anything. You may leave a message or email individual staff members if you have questions or specific needs.

Please continue to pray for those affected by this Coronavirus outbreak. God Bless and be well!

1. We have now completed three weeks of Mass rotations. It has been wonderful to see many of you! We look forward to the time when we can ALL gather at Mass

again together. Thank you for your patience. If you have been assigned a Mass rotation and have decided NOT to attend at all, please contact Sarah Peterson in the Parish Office and let her know. This might make room for someone else who may not have taken the survey or now wishes to attend. It is not necessary to let us know if you will miss one of the dates of your rotation, only if you will not attend at all. Again, thank you for your patience.

2. Daily Mass will continue to be suspended until further notice.

3. Based on state guidelines, please note that this is a trial period. We will be following strict protocols.

Remember, your obligation to attend Sunday Mass is dispensed during this unprecedented time.

Based on state guidelines, please note that this is a trial period. We will be following strict protocols. .

We are continuing the work to bring you back. Please be patient, we are working hard to make this a safe and comfortable celebration of the Eucharist. We pray that these steps will lead towards a normal return of everyone in the near future.

Though we are not gathering as a full community during this difficult time, we are all united in Christ. Let us continue to offer our prayers for healing and protection. As you are aware, our parish is totally dependent on your contributions (offerings). If you are able, please continue your weekly offering by mailing in your contributions or by donating online. If you have never donated online before, please contact Lawanda at 916-624-5827, ext. 206 or [email protected] to get your envelope/ID number. You must have this information before you set up an online donation. Thank you for your generosity. It is more important than ever! God Bless, and be well!

Book Club Selection We've selected a book that came highly recommended. In the The Misunderstood Jew, scholar Amy-Jill Levine helps Christians and Jews understand the "Jewishness" of Jesus so that their appreciation of him deepens and a greater interfaith dialogue can take place. Levine's humor and informed truth-telling provokes honest conversation and debate about how Christians and Jews should understand Jesus, the New Testament, and each other. You can purchase it yourself on Amazon.com. If you are unable to purchase it online, please contact Darcy at [email protected] and we will arrange for contactless pickup.($14).Our discussion will occur on Tues., Aug. 11th at 6:00 PM.

WakeUp! - Men of SS Peter & Paul

Please join us for our third virtual WakeUp! gathering at 7:00 am Saturday, July 11th. We’ve put together another timely discussion topic along with engaging questions for our breakout groups.

Our goal is to meet via Zoom in groups of four to seven. The discussion topic will be presented and the groups will then discuss the accompanying questions. Our plan is to begin the meeting at 7:00 am and conclude by 8:00 am.

In order to facilitate our virtual WakeUp! meeting, we need to know who will be joining us. This will enable us to form the groups and ensure we have a sufficient number of group leaders with access to Zoom so that they can facilitate the discussions.

So what’s next? Simply let us know you are joining us by sending an email to Ken Broadway ([email protected]), Greg Pfister ([email protected]) or Mike Gordon ([email protected]). Details for joining the meeting will be sent on Friday, June 12th. We look forward to seeing you at WakeUp!

2020-2021 Faith Formation Registration

Hello Families!

Your Faith Formation team is busy planning for the 2020-2021 program year. YES! Faith Formation will be back this year! As a result of the pandemic, there may be changes that will need to be made to our program. We assure you that we will adhere to all directives in order to maintain the health and safety of our students and volunteers. We will keep you posted!

If you have been registered for pre-school through seventh grade in the 2019-2020 school year, you will receive registration materials for the up-coming school year in late July. Registration will be held in August. If you are new to our parish or have not been enrolled and wish to receive registration information for the 2020-2021 school year, please visit our website at www.rocklincatholic.org/registration to submit a registration packet request.

Sacrament Preparation Eucharist and Reconciliation are celebrated at the end of second grade. Sacramental preparation begins in the first grade and enrollment is required during both years of this two-year preparation time period. Confirmation is celebrated after a two-year preparation period that begins in the seventh grade. Students must be enrolled in both seventh and eighth grade prior to Confirmation. If you have any questions, please contact Kris Dahla or Jen Gordon at 916-624-5827 ext. 213/ 212.

We have received some new directives from the Diocese that will be implemented during the month of July: For now, beginning the weekend of July 11th, family members who wish to bring communion to their family members who are in the vulnerable category are allowed to take communion home. You must provide your own pyx. If you don’t have a pyx, please check with the office on how to purchase one. Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

BREAKING OPEN THE WORD

The truths of the kingdom of God are revealed to the humble. Let us turn to the Lord and ask for

Him to strip away the pride and vanity that clouds our vision so that we might draw closer to Him. . .

Matt 11:25-30 The relationship between the Father and Son is intimate and dynamic. Jesus beckons the disciples into this relationship with the invitation “come to me.” The term “yoke” that follows would have conjured up the image of Mosaic Law. Of course, a yoke is a type of wooden harness, bar, or frame used to keep oxen (or cattle) driving in the same direction, at the urging of a master. Wisdom is sometimes referred to as a yoke (Sirach 51:26), as is the law, but not in a negative way. In the New Testament (not only in Matthew but elsewhere), Jesus’ ways are also referred to as a yoke. Jesus tells His disciples that He Himself is the yoke, meek and humble of heart. The rest He promises comes from emulating His ways, His attitudes, His dispositions, and His general way of being in the world. The disciple is yoked to Jesus, and the disciple finds this to be a lightness in his or her way of being. The yoke is not burdening or overbearing. When we are followers of Jesus, when we imbibe His attitudes, our lives will not be burdened but filled with joy or, as Pope Francis might refer to it, the joy of the gospel.

Prayer: Lord God Almighty, your Son acts as a helpmate for us, and even used the image of a yoke, to express that. May we find the yoke of your Son to be light as He promised. With His guidance and assistance may we always follow the right path, leading to your will. By so doing, we will be filled with the Spirit of joy. In the triune God we pray. Amen.

First Reading: Zechariah 9:9-10

In the last centuries before Christ, the Jewish people hoped for a triumphant Messiah king. The prophet Zechariah spoke instead of a Messiah who would come not in splendor and glory with horses and chariots, but rather in lowliness and peace, riding a common work animal. All four evangelists will later apply this passage to the entrance of Jesus into Jerusalem several days before his arrest.

Second Reading: Romans 8:9, 11-13

Today we will begin five Sundays of readings from chapter eight of Paul’s letter to the romans, a chapter which emphasizes the role of the Holy Spirit. Paul wants us to remember that the Spirit who will raise our bodies on the last day is the same Spirit who enlivens us for holiness every day. Today Paul offers a sharp contrast between life in the flesh (meaning, life prone to sin) and life in the Spirit.
