‘Education is ourpriority” - MEC>> MEC urges poor performing schools todevelop turnaround strategy for 2015JYOTHI LALDAS

MECforArts,Culture,SportandRecreation, NtombikayiseSibhidla-Saphetha has urged

allschoolprincipalswhoseschoolsob-tained 0% in the iLembeDistrict to de-velop turnaround strategies for 2015.

Addressingeducationstakeholdersgathered in Mandeni, where she is achampion for Operation Sukuma Sa-khe, Sibhidla-Saphetha said that oneof themain priorities of government iseducation and therefore all stakehold-ers, particularly the principals mustensure that schools in the district arefunctional.

Among the stakeholders presentwere members of the provincial legis-lature, school principals, members ofthe school governing bodies, council-lors and senior officials from the De-partment of Education.

The stakeholder meeting was theculmination of an intense three-dayschool functionality programmewhich entailed visiting schools that

performed poorly in thematric examsand those that obtained high matricpass rates. Some of the schools thestakeholdersvisitedincludedSiseben-zile High School,Manzini High, Nkon-jane High School, Lethuxolo, Zachari-ah, Tshelenkosi, Mandeni Academyand Madlanga High School.

iLembe was one of the districts inthe province that did not performwellduring the 2014 matric exams. Of the9740 pupils who sat for the examina-tions, 3249 failed and the overall mat-ric pass rate was 59.20% in 2014.

The number of female pupils whopassed matric is higher than males.

Among the observations made thedepartment the fact that urban dis-tricts performed better than rural dis-tricts stood out.In2013, thematricpassrate in thedis-trict stood at 72.46%.KwaDukuzatoppedthe listofschools

that performed well. The overall passrate for maths and science was 25%and 45% respectively.

Contributing factors to the failure

rate identified by the department offi-cials included disruption of schools byprotests and shortage of qualifiedteachers, particularly in rural areas.

Sibhidla-Saphetha said the depart-ment believed that intervention suchas increased contact time with pupils, common testing programmes that aresubject driven, support for teachersand completion of syllabus by Augustcan improve the matric results.

Sibhidla-Saphetha urged the offi-cials from the department to conveneanother stakeholder meeting that willbe attended by senior education offi-cials in theprovince to resolvemattersthat were beyond the scope of the dis-trict officials.TheMECalsoinstructedtheprincipalsof all the schools that obtained a 0%pass rate to develop a turnaroundstrategy for their schools.“Local councillors must also prioritiseeducation in their wards. They shouldmake education an agenda item intheir meetings at all material times,”said Sibhidla-Saphetha.She also vowed to lead a process of es-tablishing an education stakeholderforum in the district that will attend toall educational challenges in iLembe.

‘Department turns ablind eye to school’>> Parents angered as school crumbles

SIBUSISO BIYELA

ANGERED STAFF and parentsof Stanger Secondary Schoolaresayingthattheschoolisbe-

ingsnubbedbytheDepartmentofEd-ucationasparts of theold school con-tinues to crumble.

They took their frustrations to theKwaDukuza Circuit offices carryingplacards with messages of their dis-satisfaction on Tuesday.

Speakingoutsidethecircuitofficesstaff representative, Mrs U. Parsadcomplained about the department“turning a blind eye and a deaf ear”to the situation at the school. StangerSecondary, which turns 95 years this

year, started to experience structuralfailures in 2012 when a classroomcollapsed with pupils and a teacherinside during a lesson.

“Oneparticularblock in theschoolis the oldest and has been aroundsincetheschoolwasbuiltandwehavebeen having problems with it since2012,” said Parsad. When thematterwas reported to thedepartment, Par-sad reported that engineers deemedthe building unsafe and it was thencondemned.

Yet, the remaining classes in theblockarestillbeingusedbytheschoolto conduct teaching. “We have nochoice as space at the school is verylimited,” Parsad said.

Teacher at the Stanger SecondarySolumuzi Mathenjwa complainedabout the pre-fabricated classroomsthe department had initially provid-ed.

“They delivered the pre-fabsshortly after the incident that left mycolleague and her pupils injured, butteaching in those things is hell as theheat becomes toomuch,”Mathenjwasaid.

Teachers and SGB members sub-mittedamemorandumofcomplaintsabout the department’s lack of en-gagement despite their constant cor-respondence.

Provincial spokespersonof thede-partment Muzi Muhlambi told theWeekly: “I have requested thedistricttofeedmewiththeresponseandIwillremind them.”

Allegations of 'thirdforce' in taxi violence

The leaked document created last year and part ofcourt proceedings in the KwaDukuza Magistrate’s andDurban regional courts to defend Maphumalo andDolphin Coast Taxi Associations in relation to ongoingviolence over the past two years points to improper

contents of the document, but said: “That information is not for public record and forms part of our case”.

In the past 12 months, taxi violence has been reported in Durban, Ladysmith, Ballito, KwaDukuza,Maphumulo and Mandeni varying in location frommalls, the N2, townships to quiet suburban roads.

The recent attack occurred in Stanger Manorwhere 17 hitmen are alleged to have ambushed a convoy carrying six Maphumulo taxi bosses earlier thismonth.

Three men died, while over 120 bullet casings werefound on site.

relationships betweenthe Prospecton Taxi Violence Unit (PTV), theleadership of the SAPSKwaDukuza police station and the KwaDukuza Taxi Association as contributing factors to the ongoingviolence in the area.

FROM childhood I have been found escaping the boredom of chores while I busy myself with reading. I readeverything from news stories to comic strips of an old

paper used as cupboard lining. This was noticed by my aunt when I was 11 or 12 while

in her home in iNanda, near Durban. I was supposed tobe washing dishes and I was caught with my head in thecupboard under the sink reading a Madam and Eve comic

not exempt me from finishing the dishes that night. As a result of this I was given permission to read some

of my late aunt's books from her collection in her roomat my grandmother's house. Sliding my fingers on thespines I perused which book I should engulf myself in andI finally settled on the weirdest of them all — Gobbledigook.

What I can recall from the book is that it was a sciencefiction novel about aliens that mistakenly abduct a boyand his friends and take them to their planet or somethingof the sort.

I dug into that book and I was transported to anothertime, another country and another planet. It made me forget my surroundings and even hunger failed to interruptme from my journey.

The first full novel I had ever finished took me four daysand I was impressed then seeing as I went through 50pages a day from three or four hours' reading. My bestfriend, who goes through all of 600 pages of Harry Potterand the Order of the Phoenix in a day and a half (withoutsleeping) puts me to shame. I don't know why I still keepher around.

After I had finished with that adventure of a book, I

quickly discovered that my avid reader of an aunt was afan of the Archie series of comics and I went through herwhole collection in a matter of days laughing at old humour and enjoying the adventures of a cartoon I had absolutely no connection with.

Archie saved me from many chores during my visit atmy aunt's as she would defend with my mother withmuyekeni usafunda! (leave him be, he is reading) and I'dpretend to be none the wiser.

From there, I have since buried my head in many booksof all genres and subjects until I came across a science bookabout space and time. Having not known there was a connection between space and time before, I dived into theunknown and came out the other end confused.

The book had illustrations and text explaining howtime and space are manifestations of the same thing andhow they can be manipulated by gravity to create blackholes which can be used to traverse vast distances in notime.

Half of the things I read at the time made little senseto me but they stuck with me. I started seeing answersin different places such as on the television and otherbooks. Synapses lit up in a flurry of activity in my brain

Why I love to read and write

Sibusiso Biyela@astrosibs

strip.I don't

know how longthey had beenstanding there, but my motherand aunt weresmiling when Irealised I wasbeingwatched. Theywere proud ofmy enthusiasm for reading but that did

with every “aha” moment and I proceeded to smilelike a retard with each new discovery.

I soon discovered that human beings wrote thesebooks that took me on adventures, told me thingsabout the universe and about people who once lived.I realised that these writers were speaking to me frombeyond the grave; in a way, their thoughts live on.I do not know of a better way to live after death thanleaving your words behind.

And this is why I choose to write essays andcolumns most of which are published in newspapersand on my blog astrosibs.blogspot.com

I guess it is my attempt at living forever and a wayof tracking what I have done with my life.

My words will stay forever in cyberspace and Iwant them to be things that will make people thinkand let some of my ideas be known or rejected. Weall leave a digital footprint in cyberspace with the useof social media platforms and with the power of publishing your own words as blogs.

What are you leaving behind with your status updates your tweets and Instagram photos? What willpeople think of you? Will they see the real you, orthe you you choose to publish?

Just remember that whatever you put on the internet stays forever and becomes part of your onlineidentity.

These days, when I am at home and the choresare waiting to be done by me, I escape with "I'm writing something important for my blog".

How things change as they stay the same.

WEEKLYHarina tells her goodstory

JYOTHI LALDAS

HARINA Ndaba, a 22yearold from Melville,KwaDukuza, definitely has a good story to tell– just like most people.

The third year Bachelor of Accounting Science student used to walk from her home Melville toShakaville (approximately 10km) where she attended high school.

“My mother is unemployed and we (my motherand two siblings) left our father who was abusive. Idid casual jobs from Grade 8 to Grade 12 to help mysister who works as a domestic and was the onlybreadwinner. I did everything from being a domesticmyself to working as a cane cutter. I even worked fora grass farm,” she said.

Harina’s luck began to change in 2013 after completing Grade 12 and achieving five distinctions.

“I had applied for a number of bursaries that yearand did not even get a single reply. My homeboy VusiKhumalo, who works at the SABC in Durban, interviewed me and the clip was aired on a number of stations. I got a call from him the next day saying thatmy mayor was looking for me,” she said.

“Mymayor”inthiscasewasiLembeDistrictMunicipality mayor Welcome Mdabe. The mayor offeredHarina registration money for university.

“Not only did he pay for my registration but he alsoput me into contact with the chief financial officerof iLembe District Municipality Nosipho Mba who hasbeen my mentor since then,” she said.

In 2013, Harina registered at the University of KwaZuluNatal and received an entrance scholarship. Inher first year she achieved four distinctions out of fivemodules.

She was selected on the Dean’s List and receivedthe Golden Key Intern Award as well as a Richards BayCoal Terminal scholarship.

“I was also selected in the top five students to goand study at the University of Witswatersrand. Thatis where I did my second year,” said Harina.

Her second year results in 2014 are nothing shortof brilliant she achieved seven distinctions out of

seven modules.Describing her relationship with Mba, Harina says

she is everything to her.“She is like a mother, a big sister and a friend. She

is always available to lend a helping hand and mostimportantly an ear. Whether it is about school or lifein general,” said Harina.

One would think moving to Johannesburg wouldput a dent in their relationship but no.

“When I was at UKZN Nosipho picked me up mostweekends and we would go to church and I would pickher brains about school work.

“She was supportive financially and otherwiseand I could talk to her about girl stuff. We talk almostevery day and being in another province has notchanged that at all. We don’t see each other that often but we talk every other day,” she said.

So what does the future hold for this bright youngwoman?

“My number one goal is to build my mother ahouse. We live in a low cost house right now and mygoal is to build my mother a house that she can callher own.

“I want to live a comfortable life. The kind oflife that will afford me the opportunity to have everything I could possibly need and more,” she said.

WATER RESTRICTIONS!Stage 4 Water Restrictions: “Time of Use” has been implemented;water supply will be interrupted from 10pm at night to 4amthe next morning. Should this measure not meet the requiredcurtailment, additional shutdowns of the water supply during theday, may be required. Consumers may also experience lowerpressure and interruptions to supply without notice, in our effort toachieve the curtailments needed, to ensure we prolong the storageof the Hazelmere Dam.

How can you help us save water? In and around the house/business• Turn off taps while washing your face, brushing your teeth or shaving• Taking a five-minute shower a day, instead of a bath, will use a third of the water, saving up to

400 litres a week. Showering could use up to 20 litres of water per minute.• If you prefer to bath, share the water and don’t make it as full. Taking a bath could use between

80 and 150 litres of water.• Use low-flow showerheads, dual-flush toilets mechanisms and water-efficient washing ma-

chines.• Kettles should be filled with just enough water for your needs and not the brim. This will help to

reduce your electricity bill as well.• Don’t over-fill containers for cooking. You will also use more energy to heat the water• Reducing the toilet flush volume alone can save 20% of total water consumption. This can be

achieved by putting a 2 litre cold drink bottle, filled with water, and a little sand to add weight, into the cistern.

In the garden• Always water your plans during the early morning hours or in the evening, when temperatures

are cooler. Watering between 10:00 and 15:00 you can lose up to 90% of water to evaporation• Every time you boil an egg, save the cooled water for your houseplants. They’ll benefit from the

nutrients released from the shell• Focus on indigenous and non-water-consumptive alien plants (but not invasive alien plants)• Group plants according to their water needs and not mulch around them

• Water gardens frequently, but water well. Using a garden hose coulduse as much as 30 litres of water per minute• Clear invasive alien plants on your property• Roof water can also be profitably stored in tanks, for wateringgardens• Use “grey water” – used water from baths, washing machines andother safe sources – to water your garden.

WEEKLY

weeklywheelsVehicle firstaidkit essentials>> Know how to use your kit

DRIVERS should always do their bestto be prepared to respond to anyemergency. Even though you may

not be trained medical professionals thereare often small bits of assistance one canprovide with firstaid and an effective andfast response to smaller emergencies.

Arrive Alive advises drivers to travelwith a firstaid kit in vehicles or have oneat home. This becomes especially important with small children picking up bumps, burns, cuts and bruises.

Many of us could do with some adviceon what’s needed in such an emergencymedical kit so Arrive Alive approachedroadsafety partner ER24 with questionsabout emergency preparedness — andthat emergency kit.

A firstaid kit should not be a hassle totake with you on holiday or keep in your vehicle. A good size is usually something thatcan fit comfortably into your cubby hole orone size larger that you keep in the bootof your vehicle. With regards to design, itshould be something that is durable, preferably a bright colour so it can be easilyidentified and water resistant.

What would be the most importantpieces of equipment and supplies in suchan emergency medical kit?

Items to treat burn wounds, cuts, bruises, splint a fracture, band aids, scissors, tweezer, treatment for insect bites andstings as well as disinfectant. If you preferto keep medicine in your firstaid kit —headache tablets, antinausea and vomit

ing — it must be clearly marked and in acontainer that cannot be opened by smallchildren.

It is important that only a responsibleadult make use of these medications andthat no prescription medications are keptin the firstaid kit. Also do not administeryour prescription medication to someoneelse, even if you use the same medication.

What would be the most important essentials to carry in a minikit when in theoutdoors?

Bandages, band aids and antisepticsolution. Sunblock would also be a gooditem to keep in your firstaid kit as well asaftersun lotion. The content of your firstaid kit largely depend on where you will betravelling to and what is most likely to happen. If you are a regular outdoorsman youwould know what happened before andwhat you needed. You can pack this accordingly.

What are the most common mistakesthe amateur tend to make when trying toperform firstaid?

Usually the firstaid kit is overstockedwith items bought randomly at a pharmacy or outdoor shop. Be smart and keep theright things in your firstaid kit. The mostimportant things are a CPR mouthpieceshould you need to perform CPR, something to stop bleeding and splint fractures.

This includes band aids, bandages, dressings, strapping, gauze etc.

Probably the most important of all ismedical gloves. Protect yourself before youtry and help others. This should be in everyfirstaid kit, regardless if you intend to useit on your family or not.

Are there specific measures the amateur responder in an emergency shouldrather avoid and leave to the trained professionals?

If you are unsure contact ER24 on084 124 and ask for medical advice. Do notdo something because you saw it on television or saw a medic do it once.

How can one improve firstaid trainingknowledge?

There are different firstaid coursesthat you can attend to learn the basics.

What should be in your firstaid kits:• 2 firstaid dressing No. 5• 2 firstaid dressing No. 3• 2 conform bandage 75mm x 4.5m• 2 conform bandage 50mm x 4.5m• 2 triangular bandage• 10 plasters single• 1 small childsafe scissors metal• 1 forceps metal• 1 safety pins 10’s• 1 antiseptic solution 100ml• 1 CPR mouthpiece• 2 gloves per pair• 2 sterile gauze 75x75mm 5’s• 1 Eno sachet• 4 alcohol swab• 1 burn dressing 10x10cm• 1 paper tape 25mm x 3m• 1 rescue blanket• 1 plaster roll 25mm x 3m. — Wheels24.
