h e l l oOnce again we have found many good reasons

to celebrate the everyday with family and friends.

This issue we put every last glimmer of summer to good use and got out in the backyard to hold a gardening

group lunch – a great way to mix work and play, all the while sharing quality time with friends.

We held an art party for a small group of six-year-olds and marvelled at their energy and creative masterpieces.

our allergy-friendly menu included all the party favourites and meant no-one missed out on any fun.

Taking advantage of the wonderful Adelaide Festival held here in our own city, we helped friends celebrate with a pre-show party worthy of any great night out.

After reading Issue 02 of fête we hope you'll feel inspired to gather together with your family and friends.

We would love to hear about your celebrations and what you'd like to see in our next issue.

in Adelaide we love it when 'The Festival' rolls around – our relatively sleepy town transforms into a buzzing metropolis,

filled with bright lights and some of the world's most talented performers. A pre-show party is a fabulous way to entertain

before the main event – our friends Brooke, a stay-at-home mum of two young children, and Hugo, an art gallery owner, opened

their home and we helped them celebrate.

This style of entertaining reminds me of when i was young – i would often sit on the stairs at my grandparent's house on

a saturday night as they hosted friends for drinks and canapés before heading out. This always seemed very special to me… but

it’s a custom that our generation seems to have lost. i love the idea of inviting friends around and laying on Champagne and

supper before hitting the town for a show. Whether it be music, theatre or even the ballet there is something very old school

about hosting a little glam supper party.

When one of the world's biggest arts festivals is in full swing, there's no better time to embrace a cultured side.

A satisfying menu will fortify friends before a big night out – always a good idea when the bubbles are flowing. simple fare can be elevated to special with clever presentation and packaging. We lay the table with gold wrapping paper as our cloth, wrapped takeout containers together with sparkly washi tape and used golden-gleaming servingware accents.

When i first moved to our property six years ago there was no garden, just over-grown paddocks and some lovely old trees.

i had no idea what i was getting myself into! Like most things i tackle, i just jumped in and hoped for the best. i look back now and just can’t believe that i ever had that much energy, but thank

God i did. i love my garden – it’s filled with picking roses for a large part of the year, anemones and hyacinths in winter and hydrangeas in the summer. There are big hedges everywhere – all of which i planted from seedling and of which i am very

proud. i also love planting trees and watching how they change the landscape.

As i said i love my garden and i love any excuse to entertain – living in the hills i have lots of friends of all ages who also have big gardens, so we loved the idea of getting together to share our knowledge and put into practice the age old saying ‘many hands make light work’. The idea is simple – invite a group of friends who enjoy gardening to come around, tools in hand, spend the

morning knocking off the jobs together – you can achieve a weekend's work in a morning if it’s all hands on deck. Then put

on an easy spread for lunch that you can all enjoy while you catch up and share some great gardening tips and advice. Rotate

the host once a month and you can combine catching up with friends and cleaning up the garden, it’s a great idea.

I live on a property with a big garden… and with a big garden comes a lot of hard work!

With a morning of hard yacka ahead in the garden i made sure the menu was foolproof and easy. A simple potato tortilla served with a crisp garden salad is definitely all you need. if really time poor then a store-bought quiche or frittata is just as good. Add some colour to your setting with bold linens and blooms and even the simplest meal will look impressive.

The best part about gathering together in the garden is sharing the fruits of your labour. Collecting and dividing bulbs and seeds in to lovely burlap bags, means everyone’s gardens will benefit. it’s a cost effective and enjoyable way to ensure your garden keeps growing.

i love that multi-tasking can be applied to entertaining – thinking outside the box when it comes to making time to entertain can make all the difference to staying in touch with friends.

fêTe 02 PAGe 51

My sweetheart niece, Bel, turned six this year and to help her celebrate we threw her an art party for her and two of her best friends, Elsie and Evie.

Bel is in year one at a Steiner primary school where they place an emphasis on developing each child's innate abilities and talents. With a back-catalogue

of impressive drawings, Bel's imagination and artistic abilities are definitely two of her many talents. i harbour a secret hope that she'll follow in my footsteps and

become a designer one day – maybe even working with me!

We set up an art station with easels, paints and brushes ready for the girls. Given their age we kept the subject matter simple with a branch of red berries, a bowl

of ripe plums and a crash-course in the premise of still life. Basic forms and contrasting shapes encouraged the girls to think about composition and layout.

it was so interesting to see how each child interpreted the scene and created their own work of art. Proud of their final pieces they were happy to compare each

other's artwork and stand by their own to have their photograph taken.

By limiting the number of guests, more time and expense was afforded to the details. And with paint and water at every turn, a small number of children also

meant easier setup, management and cleanup of the scene. one top tip – make sure to use water-based paints or materials so any pretty party clothes aren't

ruined. Better still, provide aprons or smocks and let guests know to 'come as they are' for an afternoon of uninhibited creativity!

As with any event in our family, we have to put just a little extra thought and care into planning the day as Bel, like many other children, lives with severe food

allergies that play a significant part in her life – and ours.

When the girls had finished painting we set a table for lunch. They could barely contain their excitement at the prospect of cupcakes and berry jellies but managed to eat a good number of sandwiches before tucking in. in an effort to get a little healthy food under their belts, we made three different varieties and stacked them up club sandwich style. invariably there will be some favourites and some they won't touch but a mix means there's a good chance everyone will find something they enjoy.

We made the sandwiches with a dairy-free spread and egg-free mayonnaise but i was surprised to hear Evie pipe up, quite concerned that Bel was eating butter. Children with allergies do well to have such good friends who will look out for them, even at such a young age.

Page 56: FetePressIssue02Apr12

There are many allergens that can trigger a reaction – medication, bites or stings, latex even – but food allergies are on the rise and one in ten Australian infants now live with one. The most common allergens are peanuts, tree nuts, dairy, eggs, sesame, fish and shellfish but there are many others. Bel's allergies mean milk, butter and eggs are off the menu, making traditional baking a challenge. Like many friends or family members of a person with allergies, i am determined that my niece should enjoy cake and sweet treats just like any non-allergic child so i have collected a bank of tried and true recipes that always hit the spot – that everyone can enjoy!

Little berry jellies are sweet without added sugar – a sneaky, more nutritious foil to the sugar hit of cupcakes and birthday cake to come. simply mix a selection of berries – we used fresh and frozen – portion into small dariole moulds and pour over clear jelly – we flavoured ours with elderberry. once set they can be transferred in to tiny wooden cups, the perfect size for little hands to handle.

With a small number of guests, there's no need for a huge cake. We kept ours mini but piled it mile-high, laden with dairy-free buttercream that tastes just like the 'real' thing. Making food from scratch gives some peace of mind, it means every ingredient can be checked. store-bought goods can be a minefield with hidden

allergens masquerading behind indecipherable names or numbers.

send guests home with their masterpiece and art materials to encourage further artistic endeavours – we customised calico bags with big, colourful circles. A favour isn't complete without a sweet treat or two so we packed a lollipop and a bag of rocky-road to say thanks for coming. our rocky-road is made with dairy-free chocolate and has chunks of allergen-free biscuits for crunch instead of nuts. it's mighty delicious and completely irresistible.

When dynamic design duo Zoe Pollitt and Natasha Hasemer celebrated the 14th birthday of their world-class design agency,

Eskimo, the location was an obvious choice. An ultra-hip rooftop soiree at their offices overlooking the picturesque skyline of sydney

was the perfect setting.

eskimo’s birthday happily coincided with valentine's day and their 'love is in the air' theme matched with on-trend fluoro pink accents

and contemporary heart details making for a big impact.

stylist, Leanne, from Sweet Style was called in to give the celebration some decorative treatment. The girls at Eskimo Design all love fluoro so the brief was to create a look that incorporated

the agency's identity and the attention grabbing fluoro pink.

The Eskimo girls outsourced and brought in the experts for the details that counted – the result was an unforgettable party with

style that popped with out feeling overdone.

The dessert table, styled by Sweet Style, incorporated an iconic igloo cake made by Hello Naomi. The cake was a showpiece that

created the perfect focal point for the spread of all white desserts.

The styled dessert table was given an edge with its confident colour burst. Hints of fluoro featured on the table and a simple backdrop bought the table to life. After dinner, sweettooths were treated to mini cheesecakes, cake pops, heart cookies and mini lemon meringue pies. Guest were able to choose delicious white sweets to take home in their goodie bags.

While guests mingled and soaked up the incredible atmosphere, an Asian-inspired menu and cocktails were served on the rooftop. This
