It refers to the episode of the

three kings who went to adore

the new born Jesus. They are the

ones who buy presents to

children and adults on the 5th of

January Eve

A tradition imported from the

Usa. It’s very recent and not very

extended. Papa Noel brings

presents on the 24th December

It’s a quite a recent

tradition that comes from

1913 when there was a huge

production of grapes and it

was decided that everyone

had to eat 12 grapes (one

for each month of year and

on the rythm of stroke) to

receive the new year. It’s a

good luck rite. This rite is

followed by drinking “cava”,

an alcoholic drink similar to

the champagne.

Another legend related this tradition to Napoleon

Bonaparte when he invaded Spain . So, when

Oviedo was surrounded by the French army,

which outnumbered the Spanish troops, the

soldiers together with the citizens played a trick

on them , simulating to surrender and inviting

them to eat and drink heavily. As you can imagine

they fell asleep soon , moment in which they were

made prisoners.

Its origin is a mixture of tradition and legend. In

the nineteenth century Spain was immersed in a

succession war .One of the bands was in favor of

Carlos Maria Isidro , who was the brother of the

previous king Fernando VII and the other

supported Isabel, who was Fernando VII

daughter. Asturias belonged to the first group.
