Festivals and HolidaysIntroduction: This musical is designed to be simple to stage and perform. Each of the songs can be performed by any combination of voices, from the whole choir to smaller groups or classes, providing optionsforasmuchparticipationasdesired.Thereisalsoflexibilityintheshowifoneortwo celebrations and countries need to be omitted.

Cast: Host 1 and Host 2 (girl and boy) Miss White (or Mr. White) - the wheel spinner Kimmy and Jimmy (two children) Choir Individual classes or small groups (optional)

Props: A large, brightly decorated cardboard game wheel which can actually spin. Its face could be decorated with musical notes and symbols which are nothing more than decoration. The wheel is really just to give the illusion of a wheel of chance, but does not govern what comes next in the show. 11 large cards on which are the names of the different celebrations around the world.

Teleporter - A large arch, much like a security scanner at the airport, for the travelers to simply walk through and be teleported.

For the song Oshogatsu, singers could hold brightly decorated Japanese fans.

In Carnival, the lead conga line dancer could carry a brightly colored poster on a stick. The poster could have the celebration name Carnival!

Singers could hold up a paper lantern on a stick as they dance in a circle during the song The Festival Of Lanterns.

In Alleluia, a choir member could hold and wave a large palm branch or close facsimile.

In Oktoberfest, each dancer could wear an Alpine hat. (inexpensive ones at Dollar Stores)

    For St. Lucy Day,afewsingerscouldholdupsmallflowerpotswithlittlegreenshootsinthem.

In both Happy Diwali and Hanukkah Festival of Lights, singerscouldhaveflashlightstopointout to the audience using some simple choreography.

In December 6 is a Holiday, the choir conductor or a singer could hold up a large pair of wooden shoes to show the audience at the start of the song.

In Christmas in Greece is a Joyful Time, some singers play triangles at the appropriate time during the song.

For Christmas in a Country Way, singers can put on cowboy hats.

Sound Effects: Use sound effects for the wheel when it spins, and for entering and exiting the Teleporter. Sound effects could be the same each time, or changed for variety. Sound effects are available on the CD (25-26) or can be created by students using percussion and Orff instruments.

Festivals and HolidaysHost 1: Welcome, welcome everybody! Welcome to Wheel of Celebration - the game that actually takes you anywhere in the world to be right there in the middle of the celebration.

Host 2: Today we have two lucky players named Kimmy and Jimmy. Please welcome them as they come out to the wheel.

(The choir claps. Kimmy and Jimmy enter and stand beside the hosts.)

Host 1: So Kimmy, why did you and your friend come on this show?

Kimmy: Well, Jimmy and I have a bet with some friends at school, that our celebration...

    Jimmy: (emphatically) ...called Christmas...

Kimmy: (even more emphatically) ...is the BIGGEST and BEST celebration in the world!

Jimmy: Yeah. Its the only celebration worth having.

Host 2: The only celebration worth having?

Kimmy: Its true! Christmas is the biggest, the best!

    Jimmy: Exactly!

Host 1 : Well you kids certainly have come to the right place. Its time you had a little education about other celebrations around the world. And that is what this game show is all about. So lets get started!

Song #1: Theyre Celebrating Next Door Host 2: Ok...Kimmy and Jimmy step up and face the Wheel of Celebration. Miss White, would you do the honors please?

(Miss White spins the wheel while the sound effect is played.)

Miss White: (in a big voice) Round and round and round she goes; where she stops nobody knows!

(Miss White chooses a card and hands it to Kimmy. She reads what it says.)

Kimmy: OH - SHOW - GOT - SOO. What does that mean?

Jimmy: It sounds Japanese to me.

    Host1: WellletusstepthroughtheTeleporterandweshallfindout.

Host 1: They are planting seeds of wheat in the little pots of soil.

    Jimmy: Why?

Host 2: That is how they celebrate St. Lucy Day, on December 13. By the time Christmas Eve arrives, there will be green shoots coming out of the soil.

Kimmy: So what is the big deal about that?

Host 1: Then the children can place the wheat plants beside the manger of baby Jesus on Christmas Eve.

    Song #7: St. Lucy Day

Jimmy: Ok. They have Christmas Eve too. But ours is better!

Host 1: How so, dare I ask?

Kimmy: Because our Christmas Eve has presents under the tree!

    Jimmy: Its still the BEST!

Host 2: Dont you kids get it? Through the Teleporter again. Lets go.

(They pass through the Teleporter again.)

Miss White: Well, look whos back.

Host 1: Time to spin again.

Miss White: Of course it is. (She spins the wheel but remains silent.)

(Jimmy and Kimmy look at each other and then at the choir.)

Choir Director: Round and round and round she goes; where she stops nobody knows!

    (Everyone laughs.)

Miss White: Here! Take two! (She hands two cards to Kimmy.)

Kimmy: DI - WAH - LI ? Happy Diwali? Whats a Diwali?

Host 2: Its a festival of celebrations. In India.

Jimmy: So how do they celebrate?

Host 1: With lights. Lots and lots of lights! Come on, I will show you.

    Kimmy: Oh no. More lights!
