THE GATHERING

The Welcome The Revd Canon Gilly Myers, Precentor

Please stand for the hymn

Processional Hymn

To God be the glory! Great things he has done;

so loved he the world that he gave us his Son

who yielded his life an atonement for sin,

and opened the life-gate that all may go in.

Praise the Lord, praise the Lord!

let the earth hear his voice;

praise the Lord, praise the Lord!

let the people rejoice:

O come to the Father through Jesus the Son

and give him the glory;

great things he has done.

O perfect redemption, the purchase of blood!

To every believer the promise of God:

the vilest offender who truly believes,

that moment from Jesus a pardon receives.

Praise the Lord! . . .

Great things he has taught us, great things he has done,

and great our rejoicing through Jesus the Son:

but purer and higher and greater will be

our wonder, our gladness, when Jesus we see!

Praise the Lord! . . .

President The Lord be with you

All and also with you.

President Heavenly Father, we rejoice with thanks

for all those who have mothered us in our lives.

In a world that is broken and in need of your motherly love,

please use us to aid others as you do us in providing comfort,

nurture, protection and support.

We ask that you grow us as carers to those who need us,

so that we might celebrate your goodness together

even through our own brokenness.

All Amen.

Prayers of Penitence

Deacon Christ has no body now on earth but ours,

no hands but ours, no feet but ours;

ours are the eyes through which to look

at Christ’s compassion to the world,

ours are the feet with which he is to go about doing good,

and ours are the hands with which he is to bless us now.

Let us confess that we have failed to listen

to the call of Christ upon our lives.

(A moment of silence is kept.)

Deacon We have failed to nurture the needy,

All Lord, have mercy.

We have failed to make space in our lives for the broken-hearted.

Christ, have mercy.

We struggle to forgive those who have withheld their love from us.

Lord, have mercy.

4

President May God who so loved the world so much

that he sent his Son to be our Saviour

forgive us our sins

and make us holy to serve him in the world,

through Jesus Christ our Lord.

All Amen.

THE LITURGY OF THE WORD

The Reading Micah 6: 6 - 8

Read by Gill Mason, Reigate Representative Trustee

‘With what shall I come before the Lord,

and bow myself before God on high?

Shall I come before him with burnt-offerings,

with calves a year old?

Will the Lord be pleased with thousands of rams,

with tens of thousands of rivers of oil?

Shall I give my firstborn for my transgression,

the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?’

He has told you, O mortal, what is good;

and what does the Lord require of you

but to do justice, and to love kindness,

and to walk humbly with your God.

For the word of the Lord

All thanks be to God.

Jesus, God’s own Son,

Jesus, my Redeemer,

name above all names,

precious Lamb of God, Messiah,

O for sinners slain.

Refrain: Thank you, O my Father,

The Gospel Matthew 14: 22 -36

Please turn to face the Gospel

Deacon Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew.

All Glory to you, O Lord.

Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go ahead to the other side,

while he dismissed the crowds. And after he had dismissed the crowds, he

went up the mountain by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there

alone, but by this time the boat, battered by the waves, was far from the land,

for the wind was against them. And early in the morning he came walking

towards them on the lake. But when the disciples saw him walking on the

lake, they were terrified, saying, ‘It is a ghost!’ And they cried out in fear. But

immediately Jesus spoke to them and said, ‘Take heart, it is I; do not be

afraid.’

Peter answered him, ‘Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the

water.’ Jesus said, ‘Come.’ So Peter got out of the boat, started walking on the

water, and came towards Jesus.

7

But when he noticed the strong wind, he became frightened, and beginning to

sink, he cried out, ‘Lord, save me!’ Jesus immediately reached out his hand

and caught him, saying to him, ‘You of little faith, why did you doubt?’ When

they got into the boat, the wind ceased. And those in the boat worshipped

him, saying, ‘Truly you are the Son of God.’

When they had crossed over, they came to land at Gennesaret. After the

people of that place recognised him, they sent word throughout the region

and brought all who were sick to him, and begged him that they might touch

even the fringe of his cloak; and all who touched it were healed.

This is the Gospel of the Lord.

All Praise to you, O Christ.

Offertory Hymn

O Jesus I have promised

To serve thee to the end;

Be thou for ever near me,

My Master and my Friend;

I shall not fear the battle

If thou art by my side,

Nor wander from the pathway

If thou wilt be my guide.

O let me hear thee speaking

In accents clear and still,

Above the storms of passion,

The murmurs of self-will;

O speak to reassure me,

To hasten or control;

O speak, and make me listen,

Thou guardian of my soul.

O Jesus, thou hast promised

To all who follow thee,

That where thou art in glory

There shall thy servant be;

And, Jesus, I have promised

To serve thee to the end;

O give me grace to follow,

My Master and my Friend.

O let me see thy footmarks,

And in them plant my own;

My hope to follow duly

Is in thy strength alone;

O guide me, call me, draw me,

Uphold me to the end;

And then in heaven receive me,

My Saviour and my Friend.

Words: William H. Ferguson.

Tune: Wolvercote.

The Eucharistic Prayer

President The Lord be with you: All and also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

It is right to give thanks and praise. Blessed are you, Lord God, our light and our salvation; to you be praise and glory for ever. From the beginning you have created all things and all your works echo the silent music of your praise. In the fulness of time you made us in your image, the crown of all creation. You give us breath and speech, that with angels and archangels and all the powers of heaven we may find a voice to sing your praise:

All (Sung) Holy, holy, holy is the Lord, Holy is the Lord God almighty!

Holy, holy, holy is the Lord, Holy is the Lord God almighty!

Who was, and is, and is to come; Holy, holy, holy is the Lord. Blessèd, blessèd, blest is he who comes, Blest is he who comes in the Lord’s name. Blessèd, blessèd, blest is he who comes, Blest is he who comes in the Lord’s name. Hosanna in the heights of heaven. Blessèd, blessèd blessèd is the Lord.

11

How wonderful the works of your hands, O Lord. As a mother tenderly gathers her children, you embraced a people as your own. When they turned away and rebelled your love remained steadfast. From them you raised up Jesus our Saviour, born of Mary, to be the living bread, in whom all our hungers are satisfied. He offered his life for sinners, and with a love stronger than death he opened wide his arms upon the cross. On the night before he died, he came to supper with his friends and, taking bread, he gave you thanks. He broke it and gave it to them, saying: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me. At the end of supper, taking the cup of wine, he gave you thanks, and said: Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. Jesus Christ is Lord:

All Lord, by your cross and resurrection you have set us free. You are the Saviour of the world. President Father, we plead with confidence his sacrifice made once for all upon the cross; we remember his dying and rising in glory, and we rejoice that he intercedes for us at your right hand. Pour out your Holy Spirit as we bring before you these gifts of your creation; may they be for us the body and blood of your dear Son.

12

As we eat and drink these holy things in your presence, form us in the likeness of Christ, and build us into a living temple to your glory. Bring us at the last with the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mary Sumner and all the saints to the vision of that eternal splendour for which you have created us; through Jesus Christ, our Lord, by whom, with whom, and in whom, with all who stand before you in earth and heaven, we worship you, Father almighty, in songs of everlasting praise: All Blessing and honour and glory and power be yours for ever and ever. Amen.

Lead us not into temptation,
