You are now holding a gift of a lovingly and meticulously selected dance programme. Our unpredictable and changingworld can challenge our spirit but fear not – Dance Base ishere to put the fun, the joy and the wonder back into big surprises. This evolving planet of dance comes to the Grassmarket with major and independent artists from Scotland as well as Norway, Taiwan, Belgium, Ireland, HongKong, England, Poland, Italy, Basque Country and… whereverunicorns come from (in this case, Italy). Every single show inour programme has something powerful to say about being a human of everygender, shape, age and culture in this world right now and they celebrate speaking their truth, your truth, and our collective truth with the body.
We also welcome our inspiring new friends from the Basque Country and enjoytheir unique originality with a dedicated showcase, both in and out of the building.Made in Scotland artists Robbie Synge and Lucy Boyes join us with a beautifulmultigenerational work, Ensemble and from the British Council Showcase, wehost the magnificent Lost Dog, Amy Bell, Colette Sadler/stammer productions, and Becky Namgauds – billed alongside the wonderful Joseph Toonga. Andwe’re shamelessly starstruck to host award-winning author Ben Okri and danceartist Charlotte Jarvis for a feast of great poetic beauty.
This year’s programme might have the most striking Scottish contingent we’veever presented, with dazzling work by Curious Seed, Company Chordelia, AlanGreig, In the Making, Christina Liddell, Claricia Parinussa, Bridie Gane, TamsynRussell, and a showcase of multigenerational work from PRIME, LYDC, TIM company and more.
At Dance Base, we are united in our love of the exquisite communication that canbe transmitted with the body and this programme is here to share that with you.Your festival won’t be complete without us… still proud to be ‘the heart and soulof the Fringe’.
Morag Deyes MBE, Artistic Director
Introduction from the ArtisticDirector of Dance Base
On behalf of the board and the staff at Dance Base, I am very proud to welcome you to our 2019 Fringe programme of dance and physical theatre, curated by Artistic Director Morag Deyes MBE and assisted by Festival Producer Helen McIntosh.
To anyone who has seen performances at Dance Base in previous years, it will come as no surprise that this year’s programme is one of excellence anddaring. It will also come as no surprise that it’s a bigger programme than everbefore – this year’s programme features a staggering 29 works of dance andphysical theatre from around the world.
Dance has a unique power to inspire and enlighten, and in this year’s programme we see creators tackling themes of ritual, religion, gender, sexuality, grief, and cultural identity, in ways that will unlock something newin every audience member. What’s more, there are performances in this programme that will amuse, entertain, and enthral, as there is plenty of wit and wonder on display.
It’s such a pleasure to welcome back our ongoing partnerships with CultureIreland and Taiwan Season, and to see new and growing connections beingforged with our friends in Norway, Italy, Belgium, Hong Kong, Poland and theBasque Country. It’s also a great pleasure for me to welcome the first eversponsor of the Dance Base Fringe programme, FWB Park Brown ExecutiveSearch – an organisation that has been a tremendous support to Dance Baseover the years.
Every year, it’s a source of tremendous pride that our programme says somuch about the world we live in, but I will say plainly that this year’s is a singular and special one. These are works that take stock of who we are, what we have, and what we’ve lost… and then show us where we are going.

This is about living but it began with a death. This is about existing and notexisting, and a child’s heart-burstingbelief that there is something in between. This is about choosing andsometimes having no choice. This isabout love. A woman remembers a girlwho knew a woman who listened tothe birds. Inspired by the depth of feeling in one tiny moment of knowingthat the world will never be the sameagain, this evocative solo work has been developed through the ongoingcollaboration between choreographerChristine Devaney, musician LukeSutherland and artist Yvonne Buskie, exploring the connections and interplaybetween music, dance and the originsof stories.

Self Portraits plays with notions of gender, sexuality and the effect that time and agehave on our bodies, our perception ofwho we are and who we have been andwho we might become.
A collection of several short dancesof intense choreographic intensity, toldthrough humour, theatre, movement anddance. Underpinning the choreography isa collection of self-written monologuesthat draw from the auto-biographical andfrom popular culture (referencing KateBush, Hitchcock, Tennessee Williams and Quentin Crisp)
The show skilfully weaves athletic movesand thought-provoking text, into a compelling show of funny, innovative and accessible dance

Inspired by one of Taiwan’s most beautiful and popular Buddhist ceremonies, Floating Flowers is a subtly detailed yet fabulously dynamicexpression of body and spirit. Dressedin vaporous tulle skirts, a gorgeous tribeof eight are pushed and pulled throughthe swirling rhythms of a dance that reveals the tumultuous uncertaintieshidden beneath peaceful surfaces. Po-Cheng Tsai’s work for B.Dance is an artful fusion of martial arts, classicalballet, folk dance and contemporarymovement. Set to a propulsively cinematic score, Floating Flowers exudesthe heady perfume of sandalwood andsea salt as its cast rides waves of wildand sometimes playful motion. This isdance that reaches as high as the sky as it plumbs the depths of the ocean.

Described by the choreographer Yen-Cheng Liu as ‘a psychedelic fantasy,’Monster is a daring, intense and quitepossibly mind-blowing questioning ofone’s sense of self. Created for his company Dua Shin Te Production, Liu usessymbolic props, spoken and written text,a carefully chosen soundtrack and, finally,an explosion of motion to help pick apartthe mystery of individuality. Receiving itsinternational premiere on the EdinburghFringe, this is dance performance as askewed yet strangely seductive thoughtexperiment. And because everything onstage has a purpose, everything seenand heard there is also a clue. Playingsober games with time and identity, Liu’s hard-to-categorise adventure mightlead you to discover the dear, fierce and vulnerably human monster inside yourself.

From the Top is a witty contemporarydance work that explores the powerrelations between performers anddance makers. The piece presents tothe audience a fictional scenariobased on the everyday life of danceartists and looks at the absurd natureof so-called artistic integrity and whatit means to make art. Action on stageis juxtaposed with voiceovers andsubtitles to reveal the politics between the ever-demanding choreographer and the dancers whocontinuously attempt to fulfil thechoreographer’s artistic vision.
Commissioned and produced by the Hong Kong Arts Festival and was premieredat The Hong Kong Jockey Club Contemporary Dance Series 2015.

Choreographer Isabella Soupart and the MP4 Quartet take on three masterpieces bySteve Reich: Pendulum Music, Different Trains(1989 Best Contemporary CompositionGrammy Award) and WTC 9/11, bringingforth intimate reflections within worldwidehistorical drama.
In Different Trains, through immersive soundscape and fragmented testimonies,Reich evokes his Jewish American childhood during World War II, while hewould have travelled on other trains, had helived in Europe in the same period. The samecomposition processes are used in WTC9/11, a piece written to commemorate theSeptember 11 attacks.
The Steve Reich Project is a pulsating confrontation of dance, music and video art, a raw, deeply moving statement on thefrailty of the human condition.

Transfigured is a sounding together of allthings, a diapason, a cacophony of understanding. Performers and audience stepacross the threshold of knowledge, out intothe world together. In the year 2002, a pack of cards was thrown from a car window andover a hedge. The pack burst open in the airand the cards were scattered across the landscape. Some of the cards landed face up.The hand dealt on that day has moved outand forwards into this moment. They havebecome manifest. They have something tosay. Pick a card, any card…
Transfigured is an Oceanallover project. Aswith all of our work, this is a collaborativeprocess with input from many different people.
Transfigured takes place between 16.15 and 17.45 inand around the Grassmarket, starting from Dance Base.Parts of the performance may be seen around theGrassmarket, but for the unique experience of being dealt a card and meeting a character, for anexclusive, guided insight into the show – please booka ticket with our box office. You can book more thanonce, and follow different cards on their journey, gaining an entirely new perspective.

A dancer and poet respond to our times.
Charlotte Jarvis, choreographer and danceartist, presents this dance-drama with poet and novelist Ben Okri, about life as a constantimprovisation.
They interweave to create something new and intimate, political and meditative.
Poetry responds to movement and movementto poetry. Along the way they brush againsthistory, the secret lives of women, the passionsof motherhood, the cry against climate catastrophe, and the toughness of hope.
Each day brings new challenges, but danceand poetry respond with the constancy andimprovisation that is at the heart of themystery of life.
Two artists engage this mystery.

In the Making is a shifting assemblage, ranging from emerging artists to seasoned international influencers. Our shows are an experiment with instant performance, amid live music. In the Making (iv) is underpinned byscores-for-movement: we write theseourselves. This time we will only knowour own scores: these are systems;pertinent instructions; notes to self.As specific as a score's commandsmight be, a bundle of personalintentions can ensue in real time.Does a score invoke what, but nothow? Does it design the how withoutdictating what? As for when and if:our scores may be telling us to observe; to step out; to embrace acompelling interactivity.

Ensemble is a joyous expression of togetherness involving five performersin their 30s–70s. Gather with thegroup on a journey that lays bare theirstrengths, efforts and possibilities together and aims to uplift and surprise.
Set to a varied soundtrack of fresh andfamiliar sounds and performed on asparse and open stage, expect a seriesof physical interactions that aim to testand challenge expectations of age inperformance.
Ensemble is the result of the group’swork over a six-year period to challenge their physical possibilities together. This process has built afriendship and understanding reflectedin dance sections of tightly coordinatedtimed choreography to daring acrobatics and precarious balances.

Still Life is a piece that focuses on ourrelation with objects and things. In aperformance-long interview, AgataMaszkiewicz, together with VincentTirmarche, bring into life the stories of Jenny, Marco, Alex and Emmy. As a response to that, a dancer onstage is dealing with the surrounding, the nature of things and death. Avoiding the real presence of any object on stage, she plays with thenotions of becoming, adjusting, discovering, appearing, redoing, creating. Her body replays, acts, repeats, gets still, restarts, rests. The dance choreographed togetherwith costumes, the light, the soundand the videos, manages in a mesmerising and moving way to create a still life in itself.

Learning from the Future – A Post-Human Dance Fiction by Colette Sadler
Imagine a post-human future wherebodies have no purpose and are on theverge of disappearance. In Learning fromthe Future, the futuristic female cyborg'BODY A' inhabits a science fiction world.
The fictionality of 'BODY A' is taken as a poetic means to speculate on aninconceivable reality where ever-accelerating flows of information andencoded data could dictate the mannerin which bodies move and function.
The choreography uses movement toamplify the primitive power of bodiesagainst the background of their dematerialisation and disappearance.
Features brief nudity and strobe lighting effects.

With Lost Dog’s blend of dance, theatreand comedy, this duet reveals the real storyof Romeo and Juliet. It turns out they didn’tdie in a tragic misunderstanding, they grewup and lived happily ever after.
Well they lived, at least.
Now they are 40ish, at least one of them ishaving a mid-life crisis, they feel constantlymocked by their teenage selves andhaunted by the pressures of being theposter couple for romantic love. They’vedecided to confront their current struggleswith a performance – about themselves.Their therapist thinks it’s a terrible idea.
Directed by Olivier Award nominated BenDuke, Juliet & Romeo takes on our culturalobsession with youth and our inevitableissues with longevity.

In Like Honey, female beauty and uglinesscollide through noise, aggression and bloodto create a live symbiosis of sound andmovement. Challenging the tangibility ofthe divine feminine and gendered shame ofmenstruation, an ephemeral energy pulsesbetween the two performers.
