A .M. Notes

Novelty & the Mundane Ecclesiastes #4 Ecclesiastes 1:4-11 Koheleth is not commenting on what life is like without Christ. He is not saying that this repetitiveness is what life is like from a secularist perspective. This is what the world is like, period. This is reality—it’s the same for everyone. Koheleth wants us to let the reality of our death sink into our bones and lodge itself deep in our hearts. Accepting death is the first step in learning to live. We avoid the reality of our death by playing “let’s pretend.” Life has a repetitiveness built into it which we are not meant to escape. Stop thinking that meaning and lasting happiness and satisfaction reside in novelty. The pleasure of novelty is by its very nature more subject than any other to the law of diminishing returns.

Weekly Catechism Question Question #16: What special act of providence did God exercise towards man when he was first created? Answer: When God had created man, he made a covenant with him that he should live and enjoy all the benefits of creation, but that he would die if he forsook the obedience that comes from faith. God commanded him not to eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, and thus forsake his child-like dependence upon God for all things. Scripture: Genesis 2:15-17; Galatians 3:12; Romans 5:12 Comment: The “knowledge of good and evil” is the ability to judge independ-ently what is beneficial (good) and harmful (evil) for yourself. What God is forbidding is that man should choose to be independent from God in his evalua-tion of things. He is commanding man to walk by faith in the wise and loving care of his heavenly Father. (See the use of this phrase in Gen. 3:5, 22; 2 Sam. 14:17; Is. 7:15; 2 Sam 19:35.)

Flocknote Our Church is now subscribed to Flocknote, a text and email service that will allow us to more efficiently commu-nicate with you. We will be setting up groups for each ministry of the church so you will only receive messages for those ministries that you are personally in-volved in. Signing up is easy and should take only a couple of minutes, but please make sure to complete the sign-up in its entirety. To do so, please follow these simple steps. 1. Text “FABC” to 84576 (It does not

matter if it is capitalized). 2. You will receive a response with a

link, click the link to follow it. 3. Enter your name and email. This is

important, otherwise we will not know who has signed up for the ser-vice.

4. Select the groups you would like to receive notifications for. Everyone should select “Congregation” but you may also select any other perti-nent groups, such as “Choir”, “Youth”, or “AWANA Workers”.

5. When you receive an email from Flocknote, click the link to verify that they have the correct email ad-dress.

You’re all set! Again, this will be an invaluable tool for communication, please register at your earliest conven-ience. If you would like assistance, Tim would be happy to walk you through the process personally.

W e can rest confident in the fact that nothing will happen to us in

this world apart from the gracious will of a sovereign God. Nothing.

F aith is understood in different ways in our culture today. One popular miscon-ception of faith is that it has nothing (or very little) to do with reason or logic. Faith is seen as not something you seek to provide evidence for or view ration-

ally; you are simply to accept it. This kind of faith sits well in our culture as it praises personal preferences. If faith is not grounded in reason, logic and historic realities, it is simply a personal preference. Thus many believe that faith and blind faith; are the same thing. The Bible, however, never asks for blind faith, it calls for a reasoned faith. This kind of faith is honest about questions & even personal doubts and looks for real answers. It seeks the best possible explanation and then commits to the truth.

I am so thankful for all who served in this sum-mer’s Children’s Ministry activities! So many have poured out their time, talents and love to

make VBS Operation Arctic, Older Children’s Camp and Children’s Music Camp the best yet! We have the most amazing volunteers and this ministry could not function without them! Operation Arctic VBS had many volunteers serving the Lord with gladness!! Angela, Jimmy, Kathlyne, Kaley, and James Creech, Emily Wise, Kirsten Jones, Haley Bull, Connie Moore, Janice Donaldson, and Dawn Stanford gave so much of their time and God-given talents long before it began and I am truly grateful for them! The teachers—Haley and Kirsten, Emily and Kathlyne and Addisyn Rowe, Trish Sumner and Lauren Wade, Nick Herring and Linnea Posner and Savannah Mar-tin, Elinor Morris and Kaitlyn Rowe and Julia Fields, Julie Ficek and Jessica Dimmitt and Lauren Rowe, Lisa Rowe and Allie Mills and Lilly Horton, Eleanor Bowden and Amy Horton, Kay Stanford and Linda Walker—did an amazing job at staying on schedule, which isn’t an easy task, keeping their groups together and orderly, and most importantly teaching the truths of God’s word while always exhibiting God’s love to the children who attended. Tim Wade and Brock Schraeder compiled and executed games that brought much laughter and fun to each group while reinforcing truths that were learned each day. Karrie Walker and Jessica Coleman prepared and served the coolest and most delicious snacks that received glowing reviews from the kids and also re-minded them of the truths taught each day. Connie came up with the best crafts that coordinated with our arctic theme and verses they were learning then she led her group of ladies, Jennifer Smith and Pat and Rachel Beatty in teaching the children how to make them. And last, but surely not the least, Dawn taught the songs and hand motions with excitement each day during opening and closing times, and during each group’s scheduled time! She also was the best audio visual tech around! I am so thankful to this precious group of volunteers for they brought much joy to my heart!! Older Children’s camp at Epworth By The Sea was truly the best because of the Lord’s goodness and the wonderful leaders who served, taught, and enjoyed getting to know each camper!! Angela Creech and Janice Donaldson were instrumental in helping prepare weeks before we left! Brother Bob did a wonderful job of teaching the 2nd half of Pilgrims Progress, the story of “Christian’s” spiritual journey from the City of Destruc-tion to the Celestial City. Angela headed up the crafts, Tim Wade led the kids in some awesome games and Robert led worship each session. Our outstanding leaders, Elinor Morris, Emily Wise, Janice, Angela, Richie Mills, Shawn Champion, Tim and Robert kept the campers going on a full and busy schedule, watched over them during the night (helping some first timers feel loved and protected while away from home) and helped them learn from God’s word and through devotions from the book Dragon Seed. It was an amazing (and long!) 4 days and 3 nights and I will be forever grateful for these men and women! Children’s Music camp was again a success because of Dawn’s leading/teaching 4 yr olds through 6th graders wonderful songs reminding them, and us, of God’s love for us! Angela, Emily, Savannah, Heather Schraeder and others kept the kids on task while singing, making musical “instruments” and eating some yummy snacks! I am so thank-ful for their servant hearts!! And I could not forget Shelma Lewis and Linda Walker who stayed every week in the baby nursery! What a blessing they were, while Linnea Posner and others stayed in the older toddler’s class! Thank you, ladies, for making my job a joy—you are very much appreciated and loved!

I n Christ we find a whole new identity—His identity becomes ours. As we drink this living water, we discover that our human relationships are losing the power

to define us, and the illusion that they can fulfill us is beginning to evaporate…it’s not the love of a man or woman that we’ve needed—it’s being set free from think-ing it was. It’s not having our past bad choices erased from view; it’s having them forgiven. It’s not the removal of all our sin’s consequences; it’s God’s grace re-deeming those consequences for our good and for others to whom He will send us.

His Mercy Is More 1. What love could remember no wrongs we have done? Omniscient, all knowing, He counts not their sum. Thrown into a sea without bottom or shore, Our sins they are many, His mercy is more. Chorus Praise the Lord, His mercy is more. Stronger than darkness, new every morn. Our sins they are many, His mercy is more. 2. What patience would wait as we constantly roam? What Father so tender is calling us home? He welcomes the weakest, the vilest, the poor. Our sins they are many, His mercy is more. Chorus 3. What riches of kindness He lavished on us? His blood was the payment; His life was the cost. We stood ’neath a debt we could never afford. Our sins they are many, His mercy is more. Chorus CCLI Song # 7065053 Matt Boswell | Matt Papa © 2016 Messenger Hymns (Admin. by Music Services, Inc.) W hy is there suffering? Make a quick read of the Bible and you’ll find at least 5 major explanations for suffering: • Suffering comes from God as a punishment against sin.

• Suffering is the result of human beings sinning against other human beings. God al-lows us to make choices and we are able make them even if they are damaging to ourselves and/or others.

• Suffering is redemptive. Suffering exists in order for God to bring about a good that would not have been possible without evil.

• Suffering is a test of faith. • Suffering at times is mysterious. Many times God doesn’t give us the exact reason we

suffer but expects us to trust Him. Some will argue that these are contradictory, but it seems that this is not really the case. It’s more that one simply doesn’t like the Bible’s explanations.

P erspective: The fact that God ordained our days for us give meaning to every day, not just the special or exciting days of our lives. Every day is important for us because it is a day ordained by God. If we are bored with life there is

something wrong with our concept of God and His involvement in our daily lives. Even the most dull and tedious days of our lives are ordained by God and ought to be used by us to glorify Him. This realization, that God has planned our days for us, should not lead us to a fatalistic acceptance of the status quo. If we have opportunity to improve our situation in a way that will honor God, we should do so. There is a delicate bal-ance between godly efforts to improve our situation and godly acceptance of those situations that cannot be changed by us. For most there are many adverse details of our lives that will not be changed regardless of our efforts or our prayers. They are simply part of God’s plan for us. Take comfort in Jeremiah 29:11, “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

R emember that Satan is the enemy of believers AND the enemy of unbeliev-ers, for he desires to keep them in a state of blindness; he works at keeping them captive to do his will in order to prevent them from coming to a knowl-

edge of the truth. That is why we are not called to abuse, insult, or condemn people no matter what they believe or how they live. This is true even if they abuse, insult, and misrepresent or curse us. Rather we are to pray for them, think about them with respect, and speak of and to them with words that are gracious. The unbe-liever is hostage to the enemy of our soul. Our desire? To help release those who are captives, share the Gospel.

A s difficult as it is to trust God in adversity, there are other times when it may be even more difficult to trust Him; such as when circumstances are

going well. During times of prosperity we are prone to put our trust in those blessings or in ourselves as the providers of those blessings. At these moments we show our trust by acknowledging God as the provider of those blessings. It is the Lord that provides the regular paycheck, and the full refrigerator. We should express heartfelt acknowledgment and genuine gratitude to God in our prayers of thanksgiving to the Lord. Ecclesiastes 7:14

Articles Hope for the Unhappily Single Marshall Segal, Staff writer, desiringGod.org There is a new and widespread epidemic in our nation and even in our churches. It’s called the not-yet-married life. Sure, there have always been unmarried people longing for marriage, but the sta-tistics suggest that this group is growing at an unprecedented rate in American his-tory. In 1956, according to the United States Census Bureau, the average age at which a man was married for the first time was 22.5. For women, it was 20.1. Those numbers climbed steadily for years, then more dramatically beginning in the 1970s. Recently, they reached the ages of 29.0 for men and 26.6 for women. Now, singleness itself, for the Christian, is not necessarily something to be la-mented. After all, Paul sings the praise of singleness when he lists the spiritual bene-fits of being spouse-free in 1 Corinthians 7. The single life can be (relatively) free from relational anxieties (1 Corinthians 7:32), worldly distractions (1 Corinthians 7:33), and wide open for worship, devotion, and ministry (1 Corinthians 7:35). If we have the gift, Paul says to skip the ceremony, literally, and enjoy “your undi-vided devotion to the Lord.” So this relatively new demographic of not-yet-married men and women in their mid-to-late twenties has the real potential to be a potent vehicle for the worship of God and the spread of his gospel. This potential means we don’t necessarily need to sound an alarm as our young people get married later and later. Without a doubt, within this trend there will be complacencies to confront and immaturities to man-age and even evils to fight. But ultimately it might merely be God’s means of free-ing up a generation to take their devotion to Christ deeper and further into the bro-ken world in which we live. Will I Be Single Forever? The hope for a freshly mobilized unmarried demographic is real, and singleness really can and should be celebrated when God uses it to win worship and joy and life in himself. But one of the implications of these recent statistics is that a growing number of people in the church desire marriage — even feel called to marriage — and yet they have to wait longer to experience it. As Christians, we believe the vast majority of people are wired by God to receive and express love in the context of a covenant, so we shouldn’t be surprised that this growing phenomenon is hard on lots of our young men and women. Maybe it is an increasing consumerism in dating and marriage, where people are pickier because there are more choices (especially through new media, like online dating). Maybe it is the lengthening of adolescence, in which twenty-somethings less and less feel the need to grow up and take on responsibilities of starting a fam-ily, owning a home, and more. Maybe it’s the success of women in the workplace, creating more vocational opportunities for females that could delay the pursuit of a partner and family. Whatever the roots, it’s a reality. If you have single people in

Page 13: Ferguson Avenue Baptist Church - Amazon S3 · 8/27/2017  · Hymn, bulletin p. 8-9 ˝Let Us Love and Sing and Wonder ˛ Hymn, bulletin p. 10 ˝For All the Saints ˛ Message Bob Dimmitt

13

your church, you very likely have unhappily single people in your church — and that crowd is not getting any smaller. The scary question for some in the waiting is, “Will I be single forever?” Would God really withhold the good gifts of love and marriage and intimacy, and children, from me? None Single, No Not One The good news for the not-yet-married is that no one in Christ is single, and no one is married in heaven. We need to anchor our feelings of loneliness and longing in the gospel. If we are in Christ, there’s really nothing single about us. We all know there are intimacies that are — and should be — unique to marriage, but those that matter most really can be experienced in the bride of Christ, his church. A husband or wife may help and provide for you in ways others can’t, but a true, Spirit-filled, persistent, and present brother or sister in faith can care for you in re-markable ways. In Jesus, none are single, no not one. Jesus also makes it abundantly clear that no one stays married or gets married in the age to come (Matthew 22:30; Mark 12:25; Luke 20:34–36). The marriages we know in this life have no purpose in the coming paradise. In the happiest place in history, there will be no weddings, no matrimony, no sex. That’s a wild way for God to design this all to work out. If marriage between a man and a woman is such a beautiful, pivotal, necessary relationship and picture for so many in this life, why would it be left out of eternity? It’s because its purpose and meaning are only needed here and now. When the new creation is consummated, the picture to which marriage pointed will be real-ized. In light of this destination, marriage now is a temporary experience meant to envision a far greater relationship and reality to come, when we are with Christ in his presence. If we are married in this life, it will be for a brief moment, and we won’t regret that brevity ten thousand years from now. We really won’t. No one will say, “I really wish I had been married” — much less, “I really wish I had been married for five or ten more years on earth.” That would be absurd when those years seem like seconds compared with all the gloriously, thoroughly happy time we have when our marriages end at death. We need to think about that as we weigh the intensity of our desperation to have it now. We need to ask whether we have made marriage a qualification for a happy and meaningful life. Am I undone and miserable by the prospect of never being married? Do I think of myself as incomplete or insignificant as an unmarried be-liever? These questions might reveal red flags that warn us marriage has become an idol. Ultimately, we will all be single forever, and it will be gloriously good. We will all be finally married forever, joined together with our Savior and First Love. We’ll know well then that the marriages here on earth truly were small and short com-pared with all we have in Christ.

The good news for the not-yet-married is that no one in Christ is single, and no one is married in heaven.

Missionary of the Week

John & Gail Conner Camino Global - Tulsa, Oklahoma

John and Gail have ministered at the Central American Theological Seminary (SETECA) for almost ten years. Their ministry focus is about to change, as they are relocating to Tulsa, Oklahoma, to continue serving among Spanish churches there. They write, “We are naturally experiencing the pendulum swings of raw emotions with this change. We are very, very saddened to leave our many friends here in Guatemala, feeling like we are abandoning some of our dear friends. Yet, we are also grateful and excited about returning to be near

our family and friends in the U.S. The privilege to continue ministering to and with the Spanish church, and yet now to do so near our family, is a blessing, especially to our ‘grandparent’ hearts!”

From their latest prayer guide: PRAISE THE LORD WITH US FOR: • That Gail was released from therapy with her shoulder and arm having almost full

range of motion • The Lord’s faithfulness to us these nearly ten years in Guatemala • The warm, generous and loving farewells from so many friends here in Guatemala

PETITION OUR LORD FOR: • The most important need is always simple daily obedience – not to grow weary in

well doing! • Safe packing, moving and unloading during the next month of transition. Packing

first week, then things arrive around end of August for unpacking. • The Lord’s grace and help in facing all the many transition back to life in the U.S.,

that we would be patient and persistent in the adaptation processes • The Lord to direct our paths into those areas of service that would be the most ef-

fective for His mission purposes • The Lord’s evident working in the lives of our three dependent children in their

walk with our Lord and in their education: David, Katie and Lydia.

T he price of refusing to forgive is high. Unforgiveness produces ha-tred, bitterness, animosity, anger,

and retribution. It not only clogs up the arteries but also the courts with thou-sands of vengeful lawsuits. Refusing to forgive imprisons people in their past. Unforgiving people keep their pain alive by constantly picking at the open wounds and keeping it from healing. Bitterness takes root in their hearts and defiles them (Heb. 12:15). Anger rages out of control and negative emotions run unchecked. Life is filled with turmoil and strife instead of joy and peace.

Because He Lives Because He lives I can face tomorrow. Because He lives All fear is gone. Because I know He holds the

future, And life is worth the living Just because He lives.

I am only interested in an apologetic that leads in two directions, and the one is to lead people to Christ, as

Savior, and the other is that after they are Christians, for them to realize the lordship of Christ in the whole of life… if Christianity is truth, it ought to touch on the whole of life… Christianity must never be reduced merely to an intellec-tual system… After all, if God is there, it isn’t just an answer to an intellectual question… we’re called upon to adore him, to be in relationship to him, and, incidentally, to obey him.

Francis Schaeffer
