Felsted’s historyFelsted School was founded in 1564 by Richard Lord Riche, Lord Chancellor under KingEdward VI. The original School was housed in the centre of the village in a converted GuildHall and is still used by the school today.
The Riches governed the school till the male line died out in 1673. The last threeSchoolmasters they appointed – George Manning (1567–1627), Martin Holbeach(1627–1649) and Christopher Glasscock (1650–1690) gave Felsted School national fame.Manning refurnished the schoolroom, started the library and left his successor a full school of over a hundred boys. Holbeach, a leading puritan, taught Oliver Cromwell’sfour sons, as well as the future mathematicians and divines, John Wallis and Isaac Barrow, inaddition to Christopher Glasscock, his successor. Felsted’s pathway over the yearscontinued to be rich with success, development and pioneering leadership. However it has had its fair share of hardship, including the tough wartime periodwhere students were evacuated to Herefordshire, and a number of devastatingfires. A fascinating and more detailed history of the School can be found atwww.felsted.org/historyandarchives .
The Felsted of today has much tocelebrate, steppingconfidently onto the international stage as a GlobalMember of the Round Square organisation of schools.Under the guidance of current Headmaster, Felsted issignificantly oversubscribed and is thrivingacademically and across all areas of the co-curriculum,including Sport and the Arts.
