BaCKGRoUnD
At the start of 2007 the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) created the African Good Governance
Network (AGGN) under the auspices of the then German Federal President Horst Köhler. By initiating this network, the DAAD intends to contribute to the broadening and deepening of the academic collaboration between Africa and Germany and promote future key players in the domain of Good Governance.
During his 2007 trip to Ghana to inaugurate the second conference within his initiative „Partnership with Africa“, His Excellency Prof. Dr. Horst Köhler in the presence of several state presidents named the first fellow of the African Good Governance Network, Dr. Felix Asante from Ghana.
Every year candidates are nominated by a German university or a renown research institution and must demonstrate community service engagement in addition to their academic work. A DAAD-organized selection committee decides on the applications after conducting personal interviews. The nomination process takes place once a year.
The network currently consists of members 21 African countries. At least 1/3 of the fellows are already working with international institutions, government departments or universities. Within the AGGN programs these fellows are prepared to contribute in their country‘s way towards more constitutional legality, democracy, economic prosperity and functional statehood.
AGGN fellows extend their utmost gratitude to their Initiators and Patron His Excellency Prof. Dr. Horst Köhler and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). AGGN Fellows also thank the German government and people for the incessant support and commitment to development in Africa.

PRoLoGUE
The African Good Governance Network (AGGN) comprises a group of highly educated African intellectuals who have either studied or are still studying in Germany. As an organisation of African experts based in Germany, AGGN fellows consider it their duty to actively assist in the promotion of Good Governance values and thus accompany the economic, social and political transformation process in sub-Saharan Africa.
Due to their qualifications they can be numbered among the future decision makers dedicated to good governance principles in sub-Saharan Africa. The responsibility of AGGN fellows focuses on promoting good governance, and the ideals of people-centred functional statehoods. Fellows in the network endeavour to achieve these ideals through research and publication, public consultations and active participation in scientific, public and civil societies’ initiatives. Furthermore AGGN fellows collaborate and partner with governmental, civil society and private organisations that promote functional statehood based on good governance in Africa.
Through regular workshops, AGGN fellows are continuously empowered academically and in their career development. Active participation in on-going conferences and events related to development, governance and leadership in sub-Saharan Africa provides AGGN fellows a platform to air their views as well as network and establish sustainable collaborations and partnerships with relevant organisations/institutions. Through self-initiated projects, AGGN fellows also actively contribute scientifically towards topics of relevance to sub-Saharan Africa.
AGGN performs as think thank comprising experts and consultants with diverse academic and scientific background seeking new challenges in its ranks. Through the distribution of this Profile Book AGGN fellows hope to establish and maintain contacts with decision-makers and institutions working on good governance, democracy and general economic and socio-politically related topics on Africa.
Please feel free to directly contact those fellows whose profile may be of specific interestto you or your institution.
The Profile Book is also available on www.aggn.org/profilebook
