On Trinity Sunday we cele- brate the first and last hori- zon of the universe and history: the Love of God—the Father, Son and Holy Spirit— One God, Three persons. Jesus reveals the Trinity at His conception at the Annuniciation when the Angel Gabriel visits Mary—Jesus is conceived in her womb by the Holy Spirit for she is the Son of the Most High (Luke 1:28-38). Jesus reveals the Trinity to us at His baptism when the Holy Spirit descends upon Him and the Father says: “This is my Son the be- loved” (Matthew 3:13-17). In today’s Gospel Jesus reveals the Trinity at the Last Supper—the Holy Spirit will be sent from the Father that will complete all that was said by Jesus because the Father, Son and Holy Spirit are One (John 16:12-15). It is hard to understand how something can be three and one at the same time. Of course it is a mystery but we can use images from ordinary life to help us because from the visible things of the world the invisible things of God can be known (Romans 1:19-20). That is what Saint Patrick did with the shamrock. He would hold it up and ask: “Is it one leaf or three?” and the peo- ple would reply “It is one leaf and three”. Saint Patrick would then say: “So it is with God, He is three Persons and one God”. A modern example could be water. Water is one since it is essentially two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom but it is also 3—it is liquid, steam and ice. However, beyond these images is this truth of the Holy Trinity: God is not solitude (alone) but Communion (love among persons). Therefore, God is rich in relationships. The Trinity shows how love creates unity out of diversity. Thus Saint Paul will later write that out of our diversity, we may be rich, poor, tall, short, sick, healthy, we are all one in Christ. It is why the priest says, as he stands in the person of Christ, at every mass: “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all” (2 Cor 13:14). CORPUS CHRISTI Sat 29th/Sun 30th May The Feast of Corpus Christi (meaning the Body of Christ) celebrates the Cath- olic belief that Jesus is truly present, Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity in the Holy Eucharist. After every mass in the Parish Church and Mass Centres on Saturday 29th/Sunday 30th of June there will be a small procession by the priest in the Church whilst a hymn to Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament is sung followed by a short exposition and benedic- tion.
