FELIX MORELO: ARTIST DOSSIER Born in New York City on December 14, 1971, Felix Morelo spent his early childhood in Cartagena, Colombia. At age 11 he returned to New York, where he remained until 2000, when he moved to the Quad Cities area of Illinois. After a period of seven years, Morelo returned again to New York and currently resides in the Bronx. Educated in both traditional and nontraditional methods of creating art, Felix’s work first gained attention for a series of boxes painted on all six sides. These boxes were meant to be both observed and handled, blurring the lines between the traditional disciplines of painting and sculpture. These, along with more conventional works, were displayed at his first solo exhibition, “Mystery Boxes,” in Rock Island, Illinois in 2004, receiving local media exposure. Morelo’s more recent works include miniature paintings composed on smallsize baseball cards which he plans to publish soon in book form, and a book of drawings regarding relationships between individuals and architectural structures (inspired by life in New York City) titled “The State of the Empire.” Themes of his current work include the depiction of the individual, the dynamics that occur between couples, and the idea of the group as a family unit, portraying basic tensions and complexities of shared human experience in society. In addition to his visual artwork, Morelo performs as drummer in the band Bog’s Visionary Orchestra and provides a popular “Free Advice” service in Union Square Park. He has recently taken up rock climbing as a hobby which has served as an aesthetic influence on his recent work.
