This Annual Report celebrates all there is to love about the Ridgefield Library. Love is a two-way street here at the Library. Our staff love to serve you each day. And our statistics show that you love the collections, resources, programs and events the Library offers for our entire community.
This past year, we celebrated 100 years of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein; explored the book as object with our second Maker-in-Residence; enjoyed poetry with poetry slams, reading and writing groups; of course, all ages read and discussed thought-provoking books; we hosted many enlightening author talks; celebrated our fandom favorites during our annual RidgeCon; built up business skills with programs for entrepreneurs and at-home workers; and had meaningful, large-scale community conversations through our collaborative Founding Era – First Principles series.
We also began putting our Strategic Plan into action. A key initiative we’re working on is to “engage our community in meaningful ways”. A large step was the launch of our newly designed website, the Library’s largest online presence and our 24/7 virtual branch. The importance of engaging all community mem-bers came to life with our Next Chapter Book Club, which brings older adoles-cents and adults with intellectual and developmental challenges to the Library for inclusive weekly book discussions. We also rethought how to engage with our collections with the “Dewey Optimization” (DewOp) re-organization of Children’s Nonfiction books by subject, is designed to increase browsing and finding of just the right book to engage each child’s interest. Many more projects are in the works or being planned and we always want to hear how we can best serve you.
All of us at the Library are grateful that the Town of Ridgefield supports our mission through taxpayer funding of 70% of our operating expenses. As a non- profit association library, we also rely on the continued generosity of our many donors — you, your neighbors and friends, as well as businesses large and small to help us close that gap by supporting our development initiatives, such as our Annual Appeal, Great Expectations Gala and Love Your Library weekend.
It’s your generosity, support and love which helps the Ridgefield Library to live our aspirational Vision, “to be the model for a vibrant and vital 21st century community library.” Thank you!

Fiscal 2019 was another successful year for the Ridgefield Library. While the prior year saw the completion of our new Strategic Plan, this year we began to implement the elements we set forth. The Strategic Plan focuses on three key objectives; engage the community, cultivate a highly motivated staff and ensure the financial stability of the Library.
The Library is constantly refreshing our programs and outreach to ensure that they are interesting, appealing and relevant across the population spectrum and diversity of our community. Our Library staff, led by Director Brenda McKinley, participates in many community events and meetings to ensure that the Library is well connected to the priorities and issues facing our community. As a non- partisan organization, the Library hosts many programs ranging from well-known guest speakers and workshops, to reading programs for all age groups. We also work to maintain relevant collections to help our patrons achieve their goals. The year was capped off with the rollout of our much-anticipated new website to enhance your online experience.
In my role as Board Chair, I have seen and participated in the work that Brenda and the staff have and are doing to build out the details of the Strategic Plan. I am very excited about the things I see on the horizon, all of which are focused on bringing you a better and more complete Library experience.
None of this would be possible without the support and financial stability the Library has achieved through your wonderful and consistent generosity. The Library Board, Finance Committee and Brenda all work towards developing and implementing a workable budget. Our Development team, led by Laureen Bubniak, works tirelessly to ensure the Library raises the necessary funds to make our budget viable.
With an active Board in place, a knowledgeable and helpful staff, a great facility and wonderful patrons, I am very excited about the upcoming year. I greatly look forward to your continued participation and support of the Library and thank you again for all that you do to make the Ridgefield Library a vital part of our community. The Town of Ridgefield is our single largest source of funding, providing a grant of approximately 68% of our operating budget in Fiscal Year 2018-2019. However, it would not be possible to deliver all the services we provide without the generous support of our patrons through donations and event attendance.
