Silke Vilcins, DESY 2916.12.2008 Meeting at ANKA

Issues and aspects of feedthrough design

•Design specs:

–Develop/Use feedthrough adapted to the requirements (accepted to the working environments)

•Working environments (warm, cold, high voltage or low current)–Feedthroughs for 2K / 4K working temperatures or for 330K or higher are different…–Welding or flange version possible…

•Flange version: easy cleaning, easy mounting, easy removable, but expensive•Welding version: less cleanable, no removable, no mounting, but cheaper

–Space requirement for the BPM….–Accuracy and resolution of the BPM are responsible of BPM’s–Bunch current, front end, electronic design have impact on the button diameter

Page 30: Feedthroughs for Beam Position Monitors at DESY · 2018. 3. 8. · Non metal Material of OMC feedthroughs: • The isolator is glass • The CTE of glass is between 3,2 to 3,5 * 10

Silke Vilcins, DESY 3016.12.2008 Meeting at ANKA

Issues and aspects of feedthrough design

•Design specs:

–FEM simulations are sometimes helpful, but they are not easy for cryogenic applications and need time–RF simulations are necessary for the RF parameter, but they also need time and experience–Ultra high vacuum requirements –also beampipe diameter–Quantity: a few or many–Total costs, mechanic and electronic…–Time of development…

What type of seal for cold applications?

Courtesy by VAT

First picture shows standard gasket for a lot of UHV application, most of them are static seal

Second picture shows special gasket for big diameters up to DN 250 and useful if knife edges are damaged

Third picture shows special gasket use with clamps, in high radiation areas, called “Helicoflex” seal for static applications

Fourth picture shows special gasket in synchrotrons, while the distance between flange to flange is very short, therefore good RF properties

The last two pictures shows new designs for dynamic seals, VAT find a combination of copper pad and knife edge (soft on hard) or the VATRING system (hard on hard)….we will tested in the future…

Silke Vilcins, DESY 3216.12.2008 Meeting at ANKA

Issues and aspects of feedthrough design

•Design specs:–For a flanged version it is essential, if the working environment is cold! This decides the type of gasket.

•Under cold conditions you have to have space between the mounted flanges, therefore you have a stable configuration if you change from room temperature to cold conditions (called: spring loading effect)•compression forces always at the limit from elastic to plastic/non elastic deformation

•Under cold conditions you have to have space between the mountedflanges, therefore you have a stable configuration if you change from room temperature to cold conditions (called: spring loading effect)•compression forces always at the limit from elastic to plastic/non elastic deformation

Issues and aspects of feedthrough design

ConclusionsRequirements:

- Leak tight

- Low out gassing rate, low desorption

- Low permeation of light gases

- Sometimes bake-able

- Reliable

- Long term radioactivity resistance

- Flexible to temperature change (spring loading effect)

AND:

- Repeated reliable sealing or

- Transfer of movement from atmosphere to vacuum

There are still new developments for seals, also special for cryogenic environments. If you have time, make tests!

Screen shot during a test run from 330 K to 4,5 K liquid helium, 10 cycles (cold 30 min/warm~30min).

A continuous leak check during the test cycles show if there is a broken feedthrough or a leak seal. This procedure is controlled by a PC.

First cycle, second cycle, third cycle…

Summery

Material and design for the BPM body:• Use SST for welded and flanged versions. The material has to be agree to the German “TÜV” standard for “high pressure facilities” (Druckbehälterrichtlinie: Merkblatt AD W10), only for cold applications!

•The SST has to be ESU melted, forged and with reduced the nonmetal contents (phosphor, sulfur and silicium)

•but an increased nickel part (< 13 %)

•Choose materials with a suitable CTE with respect to each other

•Use titanium flanges (feedthrough) for flanged versions

Material for the feedthroughs:• Use SST or titanium, molybdenum, glass, oxideceramic or composition of both, respect to CTE of the choosing material, we prefer to use a filler material for feedthroughs use under cold conditions

Page 49: Feedthroughs for Beam Position Monitors at DESY · 2018. 3. 8. · Non metal Material of OMC feedthroughs: • The isolator is glass • The CTE of glass is between 3,2 to 3,5 * 10

Summery

Material and design of the seal:• We prefer using a diamond knife edge gasket, made of aluminum (AlMgSi 0,5 HRC 60), specified by the cryogenic group MKS. MKS use this type of gasket for the cavity flange connection and all flange connection within the beam pipe of XFEL cryomodules

•FEM simulation from P.Michelato shows a positive result

•We will start a FEM simulations with our concept in January 09, end mid of February

Design for the feedthroughs:• We have chosen a flanged version, due to the requirements of particle free cleaning

Manufacturing process of feedthroughs :• We prefer brazing with filler (additives) materials. They provide some flexibility during temperature changes between the different materials in of a feedthrough

•Use a fillermaterial with a wide CTE range

Page 50: Feedthroughs for Beam Position Monitors at DESY · 2018. 3. 8. · Non metal Material of OMC feedthroughs: • The isolator is glass • The CTE of glass is between 3,2 to 3,5 * 10

Special testing procedures of feedthroughs :• Yes, because it’s very important to avoid leakage during operation time

• With a cold test procedure you select out the failures in the feedthrough material and the manufacturing process. You increase the lifetime cycle of the feedthrough
