The globalization of speaking out for Freedom Day in Developed worlds is an inspiration:

Many unscrupulous events are occurring on a daily basis in the developing world, and the same on a lesser scale in the developed world.

Modern Day Slavery is a direct result of Poverty and desperation: Feeding Dreams Cambodia programs are focused on Education, opportunity and Prevention of Modern Day Slavery.Over the years I have witnessed many sad and tragic events...sadly, the practice continues, and the only change is the faces:

1. A beautiful 14 year old female very bright student of ours, who was being raised by her grandmother dropped out of school. After investigation we discovered that a wealthy man from Phnom Penh, had been in search of a very young extra wife. He requested photos of each applicant to be put forward by their carer. Our beautiful student was chosen, and her grandmother was offered expensive phones, watches, and of course a new house. The exchange continued, with this young girl have every tooth removed and replaced with shining new teeth.

Even though the 14 year old was very shy and obviously depressed, and against the transaction, she was too intimidated by the grandmother to speak out, and merely kept saying “She loved the new man”, which was all the law required to dismiss the case. We could do nothing.

2. A village perhaps 45 mins drive away from Siem Reap, with low employment opportunity had quite a few young men in search of work. A local Khmer connection approached them offering full time work on fishing boats in Thailand, wherein they could forward their monthly salary home to wives and children. However, the men were missing 2 years, without a word and no money. Finally the local authority investigated their disappearance and they were found in bonded labour in Thai Fishing boats. They were never paid, overworked, and abused, and many were drugged daily with amphetamines so they would work faster.

This one local conspiracy network was busted and the ringleaders jailed. The men have recently been returned home, but many suffering PTSD. But it has not deterred from the hundreds of fisherman in Thailand from continually searching for poverty stricken immigrants to exploit.

This activity in the fishing industry has prevailed in Thailand for many years, undocumented, and is 1.

finally now receiving the attention it deserves.

3. Another of our students, a small 16 year old girl, was raised in poverty by her single mother, as her father had died of disease when she was young. Her mother was approached by a wealthy married man, who offered to take this girl as a second wife, and in return give her, her mother and siblings a life of comfort. The life of luxury for the family was very short lived, and now, years later, her family are on the street and this lovely girl still remains captive in her husband’s prestigious house, not allowed to leave the home without him accompanying her. She has everything she ever wanted in the way of clothing, jewelry, new teeth etc… Everything except her Freedom.

4. A young mother, illiterate and poverty stricken, needed to borrow funds to build a grass hut to house herself and her younger children. She in turn borrowed US$500 from a Hotel owner, and for repayment of this loan, she gave her 14 year old son to work and live at the hotel until the debt was repaid. But because of the ongoing accumulating interest of the loan, this young boy would never have been free from bonded labour.

With no education, the mother had no idea that this agreement would never end. This young boy has recently been removed from bonded labour and is now studying an apprenticeship.

The poor face an ongoing barrage of threats - parents of starving children being offered money for their young daughters, young children being abducted for slavery, sex trafficking or human body parts. FDC STRIVES TO PREVENT MODERN DAY SLAVERY

Concrete classroom floors have been raised

T&C Distributors Australia gives FDC refillable soap dispensers

Last wet season saw devastating floods which caused our school to close… thankfully, to prevent further flooding, with your support we have been able to raise the levels of each of our classrooms.

With the manual labour of our extraordinary Tuk-tuk driver Chen and our wonderful Bamboo volunteers, each classroom has now been raised by 40cm.

This means, come rainfall in June, we will be able to continue hosting classes to our 800 children, safe and dry from flood water.

Thank you to all of our supporters for making this development possible.

Recent guests Tracy and Craig Mead from T&C Distributors Australia kindly donated and installed refillable soap dispensers throughout our campus. Included in their donation was four large boxes of soap refills, enough to last us for months at Feeding Dreams. The kids just love using the pump machines and liquid santizer. Thank you to Tracy and Craig for introducing a more efficient solution for hygiene to our school.

With our fourth course underway at the Dreams Training Center, and the start of Summer in Cambodia, our hospitality training center is reaching unbearable temperatures. This intake we have doubled in numbers, we now have 60 underprivileged students training across four departments. With the additional bodies, and our kitchen in full operation, we are now in urgent need of airconditioning throughout. Within less than two years, our center and operations have progressed more than we could have ever envisaged, and our life-changing results are truly remarkable. Our training restaurant is now being frequented by customers each week but during this season the temperature in our cafe makes for an unpleasant dining experience. Moreover, in order to provide a healthy and safe work environment for our students we believe it is imperative to install commercial ducted air-conditioners throughout our facility - especially in the kitchen. We have been provided a quote of US$4,500 by a commercial air-conditioning specialist to install 6 heavy-duty ducted air-conditioners. After installation, these energy efficient air conditioners will run at a very low cost and will make the world of difference to our trainers, students and patrons at the center. If you have been in Cambodia during April, you will understand how challenging the dry season is.

Please help us to cool down the Dreams Vocational Training Center, any donation to this appeal, big or small, will be greatly appreciated.

This month FDC said farewell to our longstanding kitchen, which over the space of 5 years has been used to serve over 600,000 meals to our kids. This was a bitter sweet moment for our head chef Srey Mao, who although attached to her kitchen, was excited for change.

As many of you already know, our kitchen was submerged in flood water last wet season, and moving this area to higher ground was an urgent necessity.

With provision from our valued partners K.I.D.S. Canada and ongoing supporter Sue Dick of Compassionate Eye Foundation, we were able to build an entirely new and improved kitchen.

Built with a heavy-duty steel frame and an industrial exhaust fan, our dedicated staff now have an ideal commercial kitchen to work in. Equipped with stainless steel benches, a 3-burner gas cooker and 2 large rice cookers, providing for 600 kids daily has been made so much easier.

WE LOVE YOU K.I.D.S. CANADA & COMPASSIONATE EYE FOUNDATION

KIKI hair comes to cambodiaKiah, owner of Kiki Hair & Extensions and daughter of our Director Kerry, flew over from Brisbane with her top stylists to bring joy to our Feeding Dreams Families.

Her girls Jemma, Tia and Chantelle set up a makeshift salon in front of our Community Support room and provided hundreds of haircuts back to back, to boys and girls of all ages.

Tia, top make-up artist, visited the Dreams Training Center and provided tutorials for our newest intake of girls. All girls had their nails painted, and many of them explained that in their lives they had never been pampered or felt so special.

Before the week was up, the team made their way down to our local village and provided haircuts for many of our mothers. They were all smiling from ear to ear – some hadn’t had a haircut in over 10 years.

In the developed world haircuts are a common luxury which many of us take for granted…

By providing ongoing support to our Meals Program, Robert Walters H.K has enabled us to revamp of our meals program menu.

With the addition of our new kitchen, as well as one more staff member, Srey Mao and her team are now providing the following meals to 600 kids daily:

- MONDAY: A combination of black beans, corn, egg, potato or banana- TUESDAY: Fried rice, mixed vegetables, soup with pork or chicken - WEDNESDAY: Dessert Day with black bean & coconut milk, sweet pumpkin curry or banana cake.- THURSDAY: Vegetable curry with bread or rice soup with protein- FRIDAY: Chinese Noodle or Khmer Chinese Noodles with vegetable and chicken.

This improvement to our meal selection and added nutrition is an exciting development for Feeding Dreams, of which we would like to sincerely thank Robert Walters H.K.
