All food chains start with ENERGY from the sun
![Page 6: Feeding](https://reader033.fdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022060202/559cdaa81a28ab94408b457f/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
carbon dioxide from the air
energy from sunlight (or light)
water fromthe roots
foodtransported to therest of the plant

Because plants produce their own food, they are called ‘Producers’
![Page 9: Feeding](https://reader033.fdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022060202/559cdaa81a28ab94408b457f/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
The energy is then passed on to animals when they eat the plant.

Animals of all shapes…
![Page 11: Feeding](https://reader033.fdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022060202/559cdaa81a28ab94408b457f/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
![Page 12: Feeding](https://reader033.fdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022060202/559cdaa81a28ab94408b457f/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
…and sizes!
![Page 13: Feeding](https://reader033.fdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022060202/559cdaa81a28ab94408b457f/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
Because these animalsare the first to takethe food energyfrom the plants,
They are called primary consumers
![Page 14: Feeding](https://reader033.fdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022060202/559cdaa81a28ab94408b457f/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
Some of these primary consumers have predators. Other animals that feed on them

Aphids are eaten by….

Ladybirds
![Page 17: Feeding](https://reader033.fdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022060202/559cdaa81a28ab94408b457f/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
Animals that eat primary consumers are called secondary consumers
![Page 18: Feeding](https://reader033.fdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022060202/559cdaa81a28ab94408b457f/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
• So far this is a straightforward food chain
• Sun → aphid → ladybird
But in reality it is more complicated than that
![Page 19: Feeding](https://reader033.fdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022060202/559cdaa81a28ab94408b457f/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
This bird eats ladybirds and
aphids
![Page 20: Feeding](https://reader033.fdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022060202/559cdaa81a28ab94408b457f/html5/thumbnails/20.jpg)
This bird eats smaller birds, mice, and
rabbits
![Page 21: Feeding](https://reader033.fdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022060202/559cdaa81a28ab94408b457f/html5/thumbnails/21.jpg)
Mice and rabbits have other predators
![Page 22: Feeding](https://reader033.fdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022060202/559cdaa81a28ab94408b457f/html5/thumbnails/22.jpg)
What will eat the frog?
What do you think the frog
eats?
![Page 23: Feeding](https://reader033.fdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022060202/559cdaa81a28ab94408b457f/html5/thumbnails/23.jpg)
Sometimes it’s not entirely clear who
eats who!
![Page 24: Feeding](https://reader033.fdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022060202/559cdaa81a28ab94408b457f/html5/thumbnails/24.jpg)
We can show what goes on with the help of a Food Web
![Page 25: Feeding](https://reader033.fdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022060202/559cdaa81a28ab94408b457f/html5/thumbnails/25.jpg)
What would happen if a disease killed off many of the hawks?
![Page 26: Feeding](https://reader033.fdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022060202/559cdaa81a28ab94408b457f/html5/thumbnails/26.jpg)
There will be nothing to eat the snakes, so their numbers will
increase.
![Page 27: Feeding](https://reader033.fdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022060202/559cdaa81a28ab94408b457f/html5/thumbnails/27.jpg)
All the frogs get eaten
![Page 28: Feeding](https://reader033.fdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022060202/559cdaa81a28ab94408b457f/html5/thumbnails/28.jpg)
No frogs.
More crickets
![Page 29: Feeding](https://reader033.fdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022060202/559cdaa81a28ab94408b457f/html5/thumbnails/29.jpg)
Most of the cattail gets eaten by the
crickets
![Page 30: Feeding](https://reader033.fdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022060202/559cdaa81a28ab94408b457f/html5/thumbnails/30.jpg)
Now the crickets don’t have enough
food so their numbers go down
![Page 31: Feeding](https://reader033.fdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022060202/559cdaa81a28ab94408b457f/html5/thumbnails/31.jpg)
..and so on. Numbers of each species have an effect on the numbers of the other species in the web.
