What are acidifiers?
• Acidifiers are feed additives composed
mainly of organic acids and their salts
• Increasing use in aquaculture during the
last 10 years
• Typical dosages range from 1 kg/t (0.1%)
to 20 kg/t (2%)
• New generation Acidifiers contain
additional encapsulated organic acids and
essential oils and are formed into
complexes to improve technological
properties

How does Ca®Plus ME work?
Ca®Plus ME consists of 3 active ingredient groups and is multifunctional:
Free organic acids and their salts
Microencapsulated acid
Microencapsulated essential oils
Ca®Plus ME active ingredients are selected to act in the feed, mouth, stomach as well as in the small and large intestine
Ca®Plus ME is one hundred percent active for the animals and supplieshighly available calcium for a successful diet formulation
Ca®Plus ME is an easy to handle, non corrosive feed additive which isdeveloped for safe handling
Ca®Plus ME helps to reduce buffering capacity in the feed

Where is Ca®Plus ME working?
Feed
• Antimicrobial effect
• Nutritional effects (Ca minerals/energy)
• Reduction of buffering capacity
Stomach
• Reduction of the pH (formic, lactic, citric acid)
• Activation of proteolytic enzymes (better protein digestion)
Small Intestine
• Antimicrobial effect (e.g. gram negative bacteria with lactic acid, and local pH reduction)
• Stimulation of pancreas secretion (pH effect feedback from the stomach); better Ca and P digestion
Large Intestine
• Antimicrobial effects due to microencapsulated essential oils and strong organic acids
• Stimulation of non specific immunity (lactic acid)

• Essential oils increase permeability of the cell wall of pathogenic bacteria
- essential oils have the ability to change the outer membrane of gram-
negative bacteria
- resulting in the inactivation of the cell protein
• Organic acids, now also in dissociated form (anion- and cation+), can pass
through the cell wall
- therefore also more efficiency at higher pH levels for instance in the
intestine

Future of acidifiers in aqua feed
• Most acidifiers in the market are multi-species products.
Only few acidifiers are adapted to specific aquaculture species
demands.
• With future growth of aquaculture this will lead to more
specialization, also in feed formulation and feed additive
development
• Design of aquaculture feed will become more and more specific,
regarding species, production system, system intensity, etc.
• More R&D efforts required to develop special acidifiers for future
aquafeed markets

Take home message
• New generation Acidifiers:
- with encapsulated organic acids and essential oils
• Effective in the feed and in the animal:
- Antimicrobial effect
- Stimulation of proteolytic enzymes
- Immune stimulation
• Efficient for the farmer:
- Increase growth performance
- Increased feed utilization
- Reduced mortality
- Less need of antibiotics
