We would like to thank you for choosing to buythe FEC FC34-FST module. We are pleased towelcome you as one of our customers.

Please read through this manual carefully bebefore beginning with the installation. The FECFC34-FST module is designed to be a low-cost,versatile industrial controller that is quick andeasy to install and can be operated by person-nel with limited experience of programmablecontrollers.

This manual contains text, diagrams and ex-planations that show the reader how the mo-dule is correctly installed and safely used andoperated. Before installing the module the

contents of this manual must have been readand understood. If in doubt about the operati-on or use of the module, please contact yournearest BECK IPC GmbH office.

Important installation instructions

A shielded cable must be used. Cables with abraided shield (80% coverage) are suitable.The shield should be connected at the moduleend over a large area and have low resistance.

The device complies with protection class III.

Please only use power supplies that guaran-tee safe separation of the operating voltage asper IEC742/EN60742/VDE055, PELV with atleast 4 kV of insulation strength. Switchingpower supplies with safety insulation as perEN60950/VDE 0805 are permitted.

Start-up requirements

• One FEC FC34-FST module (scope of deli-very)

• PS1 PSE4 power supply

• SM14 connecting cable between FEC FS34-FST and external computer, consisting of anull modem cable (PS1 ZK11) and an ad-apter cable (PS1 ZK36).

• External computer such as PC, laptop,toetc. with a free COM port (preferably aWindows system).

• Module-specific software with drivers an-dexample programs. This software can bedownloaded from Internet address

During installation

When you are installing the FEC FC34-FSt mo-dule, please pay attention to the ambient con-ditions in which the device will normally beoperating.

Please do not install the FEC FC34-FST module

••••• in areas that are subjected to excessiveamounts of dust, oil spray, conductive dustor corrosive gas;

••••• in areas that are subjected to shock orvibration;

••••• in areas that are subjected to high tempe-ratures, direct sunlight, moisture or rain;

••••• near high voltage devices or cables.

During mounting

Always install the device as far away as possi-ble from high voltage devices and large powersupplies.

Please ensure that no pieces of wire,fillings or swarf fall into the devicewhen you are drilling holes or con-necting wires.

Do not install the device immediately above aheat-generating source, such as a heater, cur-rent converter or high wattage resistor.

If the ambient temperature in the switch cabi-net is above 55ºC, a ventilator must be instal-led in order to provide external ventilation.

The COM Programming Interface

Connect the FEC FC34-FST module to the de-velopment computer using the SM14 connec-ting cable. In order to do this, connect one endof the cable to the socket marked COM. Con-nect the other end to a free serial interface onyour development computer.

Writing and testing a program

Write a program using a PC that is equippedwith the Festo FSTIPC/FEC program.

Check the program. A syntax check is carriedout automatically as soon as you load theproject from the programming device into theFEC. Existing program errors that are found bythe syntax check must be rectified before theproject can be loaded.

In order to test the wiring or the output de-vices, each output can be forced on and offusing the programming device whilst the FECFC34-FST is not running a program.

A loaded program is run by setting the RUN/STOP switch to RUN. The status LED changescolour from orange (or red) to green.

Operation and testing

Current: ON, FEC FC34-FST: STOP

The FEC FC34-FST module is fitted with aninternal RUN-STOP switch. A so-called remoteRUN/STOP switch can be used as an additio-nal option. This remote RUN/STOP switch is anexternal switch that is connected to one of themodule’s inputs. If this facility is to be used,this input can be defined in the configurationas an additional RUN/STOP switch.

Current: ON, FEC FC34-FST: RUN

If the RUN/STOP switch is set to RUN (if noremotely operated RUN/STOP switch is beingused), the status LED turns green and themodule starts program execution. The timer,counter and data register settings can be defi-ned as an additional RUN/STOP switch in theconfiguration.

If the RUN/STOP switch is set to STOP (even ifa remotely operated RUN/STOP switch is beingused) the status LED turns orange (or red if anerror has occurred).

Flags or digital outputs can be modified duringoperation using CI commands. However, thesevalues may be changed again by the program.

Expanding the FEC’s to 40 I/O channels

The RUN/STOP switch on the remote unit (FECFC20/30 without its own control program) mustalways be set to STOPSTOPSTOPSTOPSTOP.

It should be ensured that the remote unit doesnot have any files called “PROJECT.RUN” andSTARTUP.BAT” in the directory on drive B (de-livery state).

Procedure for checking the memory contents:

• Start FSTIPC

• Utilities › Program execution › Host ‹-› IPCfile transfer

• F1: from PC

• F7: Enter IPC drive “B”

• Check whether the “PROJECT.RUN” and“STARTUP.BAT” directories are present.

• If yes, delete both files using F1

• Press F8: Exit to exit terminal program

• Switch FEC FC20/30 off and on again

Expansion cables should only be connectedand disconnected when the power is switchedoff.

The power supply for the master/remote sy-stem must be provided from the same voltagesource and should be on the same fuse. Theuse of separate power supplies for the masterand the remote is not permitted.

Field PC Net Communication

Field PC Net is used to network several stati-ons. Each station has its own project. Enter the”FPCNUDP” driver in each project using thedriver configuration tool.

The system can be configured from these sta-tions using the Field PC Net configuration tool(a constituent of Festo Software Tool). Definethe components to be transferred and save theproject.

TCP/IP communication

The FEC FC34-FST module can be linked (net-worked) to the in-house network using theTCP/IP driver. The FEC FC34-FST can then beaccessed by other computers using the TCP/IPprotocol. To do this, enter the ”TCPIPDRV”(”TCPIPFEC”) driver in the driver configurationtool.

Festo Windows applications for TCP/IPcommunication.

In order to carry out TCP/IP communicationbetween the FEC FC34-FST and external com-puters you need a program on the external

computer that creates a DDE interface to anExcel application. This program is called the”IPC DATA Server” and is installed from Win-dows folder ”Festo Software”. Another usefulprogram is called ”IPC TCPIP Application”. Thisprogram contains a facility for carrying outsmall tests using TCP/IP communication andsending CI (Command Interpreter) commandsto FST computers with TCP/IP functionality.

Remote expansion.

If you would like to expand the FEC FC34-FST itis possible to use the FEC FC20-FST or FECFC30-FST as a remote expansion.The followingitems must be observed:

• The FEC FC34-FST may not be the slave.

• The default 4.58 ms timer must be loadedon the FEC FC34-FST. The remote expansi-on will not work with the 3.43 ms timer.

• The remote expansion cannot currently beused at the same time as network operati-on.

During wiring

Install the input and output signal wires inseparate cable conduits and avoid bunchingthem together.

Do not use the same multi-core cable for wi-ring the signal inputs and outputs.

If the power supply terminals are wronglyconnected, a short circuit betweenthe incoming direct current wiresand the power supply cable or ashort circuit within the outgoing wires can cause considerable damage to the module.

Warning

Before switching on the power, check the po-wer supply and earth connections and the in-coming and outgoing connections.

Please ensure that none of the installationscrews are loose. Make sure that no screwterminals for external connections are loose.There must be no visible damage to externalconnections.

Caution:

Please ensure that the power is switched offbefore you replace cables or carry out otherwork.

If you need to measure the maximum insulati-on voltage and the insulating resistance of theFEC FC34-FST module, disconnect the inco-ming and outgoing wires and the power cablefrom the module and carry out the measure-ments across all the terminals and the earthterminal using a common point.

Output behaviour if overload/short circuitoccurs

Transistor outputs A0.2 to A0.7 are indepen-dently protected against short circuits andoverloads.

If short circuit or overload current is applied,the switching transistor heats up. The over-heating fuse switches the output concernedoff, meaning that the switching transistor cancool down again. Subsequently the outputconcerned is reactivated. If overload current isstill present after reactivation, the processstarts again from the beginning.

The process cycle time depends on the magni-tude of the load. If there is only a minimaloverload, the cycle time can be up to severalminutes, and if there is a major overload thistime may be less than 1 second.

RUN/STOP switch

The RUN/STOP switch is used to influence theexecution of the application program. If theswitch is set to RUN the program is executed,and if it is on STOP the program is halted.

Interrupt inputs

Inputs E1.0 and E1.1 can be individually confi-gured as interrupt inputs. Like the counterinputs, the interrupt inputs can be softwareconfigured and high level language user routi-nes used for interrupt handling. Inputs thatcan be configured as interrupt inputs can alsobe read in as normal digital inputs.

Incremental encoder

The FEC FC34-FST has a 16-bit software incre-mental encoder (see AB direction detection)that can process counter pulses of up to 200Hz. Connection takes place using the two in-terrupt inputs E1.0 and E1.1. An optional refe-rence switch can be connected using inputE0.7.

The incremental encoder is configured andevaluated using the program library.

The timer function

The FEC FC34-FST has an extremely flexibletimer function that makes it possible to confi-gure up to 32 32-bit timers. The time base foreach timer can be adjusted in multiples of 4.58ms using a configurable 16-bit distributor. Thismeans that times ranging from 4.58 ms to(theoretically) several years can be measured.

The timers are configured and evaluated usingthe program library.

Extension interface/remote expansion

The FEC FC34-FST module has an extensioninterface via which the FC20/FC30 module canbe connected as a remote expansion or anotherserial device with max. 115 Kbaud can be ac-tuated.

In order to connect an FC20/FC30 as a remoteexpansion you require an FEC KSD4 cable. Theremote expansion is configured and actuatedusing the provided program library. The mo-dule (FEC FC34-FST) on which the remotefunction is software-activated acts as a masterstation and contains the control program. Themaster station has read/write access to the

inputs and outputs and the RUN/STOP switchon the remote and slave stations. The slavestation cannot have its own control program.

Since both stations are connected via a TTLinterface, this may only be implemented usingan original FEC KSD4 cable (max. 30 cm). If thecable is any longer, reliable operation of theremote connection is no longer guaranteed. Ifstrong EMC radiation is present, both of theconnected stations should be installed in ascreened switch cabinet.

If a serial device is to be connected to theextension interface, please remember that theinterface produces TTL signals and is not gal-vanically separated. If you wish to convert thesignal to a level of 24 V, for example, you mustdo this yourself using suitable hardware de-pending on the application.

The extension interface is actuated by a supp-lied driver and the provided program library.

Ethernet network

The FEC FC34-FST has network functions thatcan be used using the 8-pin RJ45 connector(10Base T).

Troubleshooting information

Please ensure that the installation instruc-tions in the manual have been correctly follo-wed. Check whether the FEC has been connec-ted using undamaged cables that comply withthe relevant standards. Furthermore, youshould also make sure that the FEC is beingprovided with the correct supply voltage.

What do I do if…..

Problem

The FEC FC34-FST module doesn’t react.

Remedy

Restart the module. Disconnect the power sup-ply to the module for several seconds.

Problem

No green status LED when the RUN/STOPswitch is set to RUN.

Perform the following test: check your remoteRUN/STOP switch settings (configured in theprogramming software). This RUN/STOPswitch may be set to “STOP”.

Problem

The status of the I/O control LED does notcorrespond with the actual output status.

Check whether the output device is workingcorrectly. Check whether the required voltageis present at the output terminals.

Problem

The operating status of the input device doesnot correspond with the status of the I/O con-trol LED’s for this input.

Remedy

Check that the input device is working correct-ly, check for loose contacts or other irregulari-ties.

An input that is switched on or off within a timeperiod that is shorter than the operating cycleor the module sampling time may not be de-tected.

Problem

Status LED is red.

Remedy

This indicates a program error or an internalerror. The error number can be read out usingthe CI (Command Interpreter test system in theFEC FC34-FST module) in the FSTIPC/FEC soft-ware package or the service unit (optional).

Error word

At present there is no automatic detection oferrors in the connected inputs and outputs. Inapplications where this can lead to problems,appropriate measures must be taken (an addi-tional program with a function test, externalsignal detection, signal feedback etc.). If an error handling program is activated whenan error occurs, this must be defined in theconfiguration. The error program is a programwritten by the user in the form of a list ofinstructions or a contact plan. This programshould not be active during normal operation(see FSTIPC/FEC software documentation formore information).

The FEC FC34-FST module also allows an erroroutput to be set if an error occurs. If this facilityis being used, the output must also be speci-fied in the configuration

The Festo FST run-time kernel FSTPCR22.EXEfor the FEC FC34-FST module is already instal-led and is started automatically. This containsPLC characteristics that are always required.The kernel is also responsible for loading andrunning the user program. Other parts of a PLCoperating system can be subsequently loadedinto the FEC FC34-FST module as modulesand/or drivers together with a user project.This is done using a development computer(e.g. standard PC or laptop) and the Festo FSTsoftware. The development computer shouldbe connected to the COM port of the FEC FC34-FST module via a null modem cable (see abo-ve).

The characteristics of the IPC PLC operatingsystem and the FST software for producingindustrial PC PLC programs are described indetail in the manuals supplied with the FSTsoftware. Here is a brief description of thecontents thereof:

Programming in AWL and KOP

The AWL (instruction list) and KOP (contactplan) are programmed in accordance with theFesto FST software rules. A description of theFST software can be found in the relevant do-cumentation accompanying the software. Ma-nuals containing a detailed description of howto program instruction lists and contact plansare also available. More information can beobtained from your nearest Festo branch.

The Command Interpreter (CI)

All FESTO controllers have a command inter-preter. It is usually referred to as the “CI”. TheCI is a man-machine interface (MMI). However,it is also frequently used manually because ithas an extremely easy-to-use interface. CI com-mands are a constituent of the Festo softwaretool. They are entered on the developmentcomputer and transferred to the FEC FC34-FSTmodule via the link to the FEC as a PLC stationusing a COM port. The results are also transfer-red to the development computer by the mo-dule, where they are displayed. The CI can alsobe operated using a terminal or a terminalemulator via the serial interface (COM). Thecommand interpreter on the serial interface(COM) is also used by the FST software for

many other tasks. The different program com-ponents of the FST software handle communi-cation with the connected industrial PC auto-matically and provide considerably better,more convenient user interfaces.

Access to the controller can be password pro-tected. If a password has been specified, allwrite access and driver access is blocked in theCI.

Drivers and modules

The programming of drivers and modules isdescribed in the FST IPC 3.2 manual.

Multitasking/program execution

The module’s PLC operating system has multi-tasking capability. It can sequentially workthrough the processing cycles (tasks) of sever-al programs. During the execution of aprogram’s tasks the other programs are notrunning. However, the programs are executedso quickly and the change to the next program(task change) is so rapid that the programsseem to be running synchronously. This isknown as pseudo-parallel program execution.

A PLC application can contain up to 64 pro-grams that can also be synchronously execut-ed. Program 0 is automatically started after

start-up. These in turn (i.e. any program) canactivate, stop or reset other programs usingthe P/PS tool or modules.

PLC programming languages

In FST-IPC control programs can be formulatedin the form of contact plans and instructionlists (with integrated interface programming).Program development is supported by a user-friendly editor, and another tool checks thesyntax of the programs.

Error handling

Errors can occur at any time in an automatedsystem, whereby a distinction should be madebetween programming errors and system er-rors. An example of a programming error is azero division, and an example of a system erroris an I/O module failure.

The FST IPC PLC operating system detects manyerrors and deals with them in a defined man-ner. The user is provided with a facility forparticipating in error handling and possibly insolving the problem. This is done using theerror word (FW) and the error program.

Field PC Net is used to network several stati-ons. Each station has its own project. Enter the”FPCNUDP” driver each project using the driverconfiguration tool.

The system can be configured from these sta-tions using the Field PC Net configuration tool(a constituent of Festo Software Tool). Definethe components to be transferred and save theproject. More information can be found in the“Field PC Net configuration tool” document.

TCP/IP communication

The FEC FC34-FST module can be connected tothe in-house network using the TCP/IP driver.The FEC FC34-FST can then be accessed byother computers using the TCP/IP protocol. Todo this, enter the ”TCPIPDRV” (”TCPIPFEC”)driver in the driver configuration tool.
