The NAMM Winter show

had as expected a number

of new solutions that were

showcased and we have

highlighted a few of them

in our Ennovations column.

I am sure there were a

number of interesting

solutions that we may be

unaware of. Do highlight

to us those that captured your attention and we will post

them.

We are on our way to ISE in Amsterdam and expect to be

overwhelmed by technology:)) Talking about technology,

Projection mapping has become a huge part of many

activities from festivals to national and corporate events

that it no longer surprises us that we receive a few projects

every month for coverage. In this issue we feature the

projection mapping done during the opening of the King

Abdulaziz Center for World Culture in Saudi Arabia but

what caught our attention is our story on how Stage

Connections used its skills in an innovative manner for the

Dom Pérignon Lumiere Dinner in Australia. Table cloths and

plate settings were brought to life with creative custom

animations projected down onto them, thereby introducing

guests to each of the courses that were matched with Dom

Pérignon champagne. Definitely not an easy task, but it

was executed with perfection by Stage Connections. For the

lucky 100 VIPs who attended the event we are sure it will

be something that they will not forget.

We are also very pleased to bring you coverage on the new

Zouk venue. The massive lighting rig will become an icon of

Zouk for sure.

Enjoy the read.

HARMAN Professional Solutions Introduces The HARMAN Connected PAINTERNATIONAL: At NAMM, HARMAN Professional Solutions announced the HARMAN Connected PA—a complete, integrated ecosystem of live sound products that allows musicians and performers at any skill level to quickly and easily get professional results. At the center of the Connected PA ecosystem is the groundbreaking new HARMAN Connected PA mobile app, which provides one centralized solution for intuitive setup, configuration and control. The HARMAN Connected PA ecosystem brings together Soundcraft mixing consoles, AKG microphones, dbx stage boxes and JBL speakers that integrate HARMAN ioSYS technology to offer a flexible and scalable solution that makes it easy for customers to get great live sound.

“Musicians need a fast and easy way to set up their PA system so they can focus on performing instead of worrying about their equipment,” said Noel Larson, Senior Global Manager, HARMAN Professional Solutions. “The HARMAN Connected PA system provides musicians a simple and effective way to set up and operate their entire PA system from one central app, with minimal pro audio skills or previous live sound experience. Now musicians can focus on what matters most—their performance.”

The HARMAN Connected PA is an industry first, and streamlines the setup process with one state-of-the-art central app for the entire component ecosystem, removing the need for multiple apps and GUIs. and offers access from a variety of devices, including iOS, Android, Mac OS and Windows.

The Connected PA product ecosystem is enabled via ioSYS technology and initially includes equipment from Soundcraft, JBL, dbx and AKG, allowing musicians to create systems that suit their specific needs. Additional HARMAN equipment can be added to increase performance flexibility and meet the demands of future growth. At launch, compatible products include:

- Soundcraft Ui12, Ui16, and Ui24R Digital Mixers - JBL PRX800W Series Loudspeakers - dbx DI1 Active Direct Box- AKG P5i Microphone

HARMAN Professional Solutions plans to add many new products to the Connected PA ecosystem to provide musicians with greater versatility and adaptable performance.

AvailabilityThe HARMAN Connected PA app is expected to be available Q2 2017 from the Apple App Store, Google Play, Soundcraft.com and JBL.com. Soundcraft Ui24R is expected to be available March 2017. The AKG P5i microphone will be available February 2017. JBL PRX800W speakers and the dbx DI1 are currently available but may require firmware updates to enable HARMAN Connected PA functionality.

MIPRO MA-708 Portable Wireless PA System Wins Taiwan Excellence Award 2017

TAIWAN: MIPRO's MA-708 portable PA system has won the Taiwan Excellence Award, considered the highest accolade awarded to products that encapsulate “innovation values”. The MA-708 portable PA system was judged according to the five categories of “R&D,” “Design,” “Quality,” “Marketing,” and “Made in Taiwan”.

The one-piece speaker cabinet houses a class-D amplifier that drives two-way loudspeakers. Delivering powerful

and clear sound quality, the system offers an ideal public address solution for medium to large crowds.

The MA-708 follows the principles of user-oriented design and extreme flexibility. It integrates a wireless microphone system, mixer, speakers, CD, USB and Bluetooth players for audio playback. It accepts up to 4 plug & play receivers for easy installation and replacement, and has an easy and fast channel set-up via a one-touch ‘Scan & ACT’ sync button. The ACT 32HR microphone designed with a built-in volume control can remotely control the level of master volume of the sound system from a distance.

The MA-708 is portable and easy to transport with sturdy wheels and a retractable handle – an industry first. It even includes a storage compartment for two handheld or beltpack transmitters. The environmental lithium rechargeable battery decreases the weight and offers minimum 7 hours of standby time for indoor or outdoor use even when main electric power is not available.

Stardraw.com Announces 2016 As Best Year EverINTERNATIONAL: Software provider Stardraw.com has announced 2016 to have been the company’s best year ever since its incorporation in 2000. The news follows the announcement last year that 2015 had already been a record year for sales and usage stats of Stardraw.com’s award-winning design and documentation software, Stardraw Design 7.2.

“Obviously we’re delighted,” said Stardraw.com CEO, Rob Robinson. “We had already recorded close to 25% growth during 2015, and we were up nearly another 20% again over the course of 2016. Our usage stats bear out the same story with an average of 10,000 sessions per month opened during 2016 which increased to a staggering 15,000 per month in 2016. That we should be enjoying this kind of growth in what has been a precarious year in so many other ways is particularly gratifying.”

“There are doubtless a number of factors that explain this positive shift,” he continued. “We think that it is due to in

part to the increased accessibility of Stardraw Design 7, as well, of course, as the constant improvements, refinements and new features we have been adding over the years. As a result we have a product that can be fully tailored to our customers’ requirements and budget thanks to its modular nature. We have also improved accessibility by moving to a new, subscription-based business model which allows customers to pay a small amount monthly rather than a single annual fee. This is a much better solution for cash-flow management and ensures that customers are always enjoying the most up-to-date version of the software.”

Trio AV Supports Cirque Adrenaline With GLP FixturesSINGAPORE: Cirque Adrenaline produced by Simon Painter and Tim Lawson, who are also the brains behind acclaimed shows The Illusionists and Le Noir, presented for the first time in Singapore, Cirque Adrenaline, brought in courtesy of BASE Entertainment Asia.

For two weeks, in December 2016, audiences were left sitting at the edge of their seats, with adrenaline pumping as they watched one of the most daring and death-defying shows at the MasteCard Theatres at Marina Bay Sands.

Consisting of 15 spectacular acts performed by over 30 performers, Cirque Adrenaline’s troupe is renowned worldwide for its theatrical flair and breath-taking acrobatic displays both on the ground and high above the stage.

Helping to create the right mood for the performance was the lighting system. The lighting system in the theatre was further augmented with GLP fixtures to create the feel and look that the lighting designer wanted to portray for the performance.

Trio AV loaned 38 units of the GLP impression X4 LED Wash Movers to the promoter Base Entertainment. “The GLP X4 offers a bright alternative with a wide zoom range angle with full colour mixing capabilities. It is also able to do funky customised pixel patterns. These features were enough to convince the lighting designer to include the GLPs as part of the overall lighting set-up in helping him design the show to complement the death-defying acts on stage,” said Alvinson Yap of Trio AV.

TKLS Invests In GLP's 24 X4 Bar 20

SOUTH KOREA: Total Korea Lighting & Sound (TKLS) has recently purchased 24 X4 Bar 20 revolutionary lighting battens from GLP.

The fixture is the first purchase of GLP solutions by Total Korea, but it has already found immediate success for the company, having gone straight onto a major production which will be running in Seoul until March 2017. The opera Aida has placed all the fixtures onto a four-month production run.

Mr Shin, Owner and CEO of Total Korea, stated that he was extremely happy with the X4 Bar 20. “This is our first purchase of GLP — we are very impressed with the quality of the product, and confident that the X4 Bar 20 will prove to be highly successful in our rental stock going forward. We are also very pleased with the service from the GLP staff and look forward to working with them in the future.”

Søren Storm, Sales Director GLP Asia/Pacific, is also extremely excited with the deal in Korea. “Total Korea is one of the leading rental companies in the country and is involved with a number of prestige projects, so this will provide great exposure for the GLP products in the territory.

“We know that Total Korea is also handling a number of international projects where they see these GLP products specified, so we are looking forward to giving them our support going forward.”

East Meets West With Siam Music Yamaha & The Adam Hall GroupTHAILAND: Siam Music Yamaha Co., Ltd. (SMY) has signed an exclusive distribution partnership for Thailand with the Adam Hall Group.

The initial idea started when Dr Perawat Chookhiatti, Managing Director, Siam Music Yamaha Co., Ltd, met Chandan Mahtani, Managing Director, Adam Hall Asia Pte Ltd at the Pro Light & Sound in Shanghai in 2015 and had a brief discussion about the possibilities of distribution of Adam Hall products in Thailand.

“I see the benefit of having Adam Hall brands within our group, this is as an expansion to the current SMY range of products,” said Dr Perawat. “It will also fill in the gaps in various categories, which we are currently not representing and I know our dealers will be delighted to have a one-stop source solution.”

Likewise, Mr Mahtani expressed a similar opinion with regards to the unique partnership: “Partnering with a Japanese company in Thailand represents a big and exciting shift. In our opinion, SMY is the best candidate we could have in Thailand. We are happy to acknowledge that we could contribute to the expansion of SMY although they have a great brand like Yamaha. We are confident to add value to their overall business by way of our product range and close communications.”

SMY is currently developing an Adam Hall Group showroom in Bangkok to be fully operational by February 2017.

“The partnership between Siam Music Yamaha is a great step forward for the Adam Hall Group in Thailand and we expect substantial synergies between both parties. As we complete the Asian circuit, it is satisfying to see our aim for well-established partners has been successful,” concluded Bodo Falkenried, Head of Global Business Development for the Adam Hall Group.

Qu-16 Installed In Thai Hard Rock Café

THAILAND: The new Hard Rock Cafe in Chiangmai, Thailand, recently opened its doors featuring an audio system designed and installed by One Systems Global. The company specified the Qu-16 digital rackmount mixer from Allen & Heath to manage all of its audio requirements.

The mixer is installed in an AV rack along with the amp and Hard Rock audio server, located in a control room. The mixer controls playback audio sources and any live artists who will perform at the venue. The Qu is accompanied by a d&b audiotechnik PA system.

“Qu-16 is the ideal mixer for this type of venue, as it has enough capacity to manage a live music performance yet compact to store away, with flexible control options so that the user can connect to a wireless router and use the iPad app to mix from anywhere in the venue!” explains One Systems Global’s Mac (Suttipun Y.).

Kyushu Butai Chooses To Work With Prolyte ProductsJAPAN: Japanese based Kyushu Butai has recently changed its complete inventory of trussing and staging systems to Prolyte products.

Yoshinobu Yasunaga, Managing Director of Kyushu Butai, was introduced to the Prolyte brand during the World Lighting Fair in 2012, and was interested in the company’s broad range of products which were at the time still fairly unknown in Japan.

He then convinced Noritaka Kuwahara, the General Manager of Kyushu Butai subsidiary company Hiryu Sobi, to invest in StageDex. Both companies are now using the Prolyte StageDex system, investing not only in the decking, but also in telescopic legs, adjustable stairs, ramps and a large variety of accessories.

The Prolyte kit has been used for a range of events, including the inauguration of the new Trans Kyushu bullet train, the Americas cup in Fukuoka and the BMW i8 inauguration.

Both companies are currently looking to expand their rental portfolio with more Prolyte products, and Kyushu Butai aims to increase its inventory with additional ground support systems and roof systems from Prolyte.

As Mr. Yasunaga explains: “Prolyte supplies first-quality products and gives high priority toward product and user safety. The fact that their roof systems are fully compliant to Eurocode is really important for our company. The products we have invested in so far have really paid off in respect to faster and safer performance. Furthermore, the investment in a universally-recognized A-brand has stipulated the leading role Kyusu Butai plays in Japan, offering our customers only the best of the best.”

Sentosa’s Love in Springtime Activities Feature Merlion Magic Lights

SINGAPORE: Sentosa, Singapore’s “State of Fun” has brought together two of the biggest occasions in Chinese and Western cultures – Lunar New Year and Valentine’s Day through its Love in Springtime theme that is to run from 21 January to 26 February.

Palawan Green, Merlion Plaza and Beach Plaza in Sentosa will turn into a festive playground of lights, entertainment and activities for everyone, with a captivating showcase of 12 Zodiac lanterns at Palawan Green, each stylised to tell heart-warming love stories. The highlights also include the Merlion Magic Lights! as well as a concert beside the beach on the 15th day of the Lunar New Year, featuring well-known folk songs by active members from the 1980s local music scene.

“Love in Springtime celebrates togetherness, love, and wishes for a bountiful year – ideals that transcend cultures. Our line-up of activities offers both traditional and unconventional options for those seeking a fun-filled spring celebration of love. The festivities provide great opportunities for families and friends to come together and celebrate in The State of Fun. As we march into the year of the Rooster, we wish our guests a year of luck, prosperity and good health,” said Agatha Yap, Director of Sales & Marketing at Sentosa Development Corporation.

As the night falls, all eyes (and ears) will be on the beloved Sentosa Merlion, with the Merlion Magic Lights! The ever-popular light show features projections of icons and colours, coupled with music, for a mesmerising performance.

Ensuring that the Sentosa Merlion is lighted up perfectly for the occasion is Hexogon Solution. A total of four Christie Boxer 4K30s are used together with 10 Clay Parky Sharpys and 50 units of SGM P5. The 8-minute show mainly focuses on Chinese New Year and Valentines Day icons and colour keeping to the Love in Springtime theme.

Sentosa management’s brief to Hexogon was for the show to feature very detailed traditional paper cut techniques based on the concept of the 12 Chinese Zodiac. The show also features the “Love” elements with modern vibrant neon motif so as to highlight an “east meets west”, and “traditional meets modern” type of theme.

The vibrant lighting and projection mapping on the 37-metre tall Merlion sculpture that kicked off on 21 January certainly kept to the theme and thrilling the crowd for an unforgettable visual and auditory experience.

The Christie Boxer 4K30 3DLP projector has six 450W mercury lamps delivering 30,000 center lumens, that offers omnidirectional orientation capability and a built-in Christie Twist that enables images to be blended and warped from multiple projectors onto curved or irregular surfaces without requiring an external solution.

Clair Cohesion Series Makes Australian Debut With Keith Urban

AUSTRALIA: Country superstar Keith Urban had the honour of being the first artist to headline the International Convention Centre Sydney’s (ICC Sydney) entertainment theatre.

Although the venue is equipped with a d&b audiotechnik PA system, Keith is a long time Clair account and so JPJ Audio provided their new Clair Cohesion PA system, purchased just in time for Keith’s Australian Ripcord Tour.

Seamless integration within the Cohesion Series, assures uniform coverage in multiple venues regardless of acoustic challenges or sightlines. The Series provides higher output, reference quality sound within a smaller footprint; in truck space and in the air.

Keith’s FOH engineer Kirk Kelsey has mixed for a wide variety of acts including Live, Creed, Three Doors Down, and The Smashing Pumpkins. He readily admits that he has been blown away by the Cohesion Series.

“The new Cohesion system is a totally different animal to anything else Clair has produced,” commented Kirk. “It’s also totally different to anything else that I have mixed on such as d&b, Meyer or Adamson. Whilst all of those systems are high quality, Cohesion just keeps going – it never compresses itself, has tons of headroom and it throws a very good distance. The clarity and vocal intelligibility of it is outstanding whether you’re in a theatre, arena or stadium.”

Kirk reports that as there is a large amount of low frequency in the hanging PA, he doesn’t have to fly subwoofers.

“There’s not a lot of processing in the Cohesion as I believe that Clair wanted to give engineers raw power,” he added. “One thing I learnt with the Cohesion PA is that you have to build your show in this system for it to be able to work. I can’t just come in after an L’Acoustics or d&b show, and plug into the system. The Cohesion system will show all the flaws in the mix so you have to undo everything.”

At the ICC theatre there were twelve Cohesion CP-118™ self-powered sub bass loudspeakers run in a cardio pattern of two blocks of six onstage. Kirk reports that they are really, really efficient and that they deliver tons of output, in fact he actually has to run the subs at -10 compared to the rest of the system.

The main hang comprised of sixteen Cohesion CO-12 cabinets, Clair’s next generation of versatile, reference quality concert loudspeakers, with a further twelve CO-12’s for side hang.

“The side hang is a 120° splay and the main hang an 80° splay,” Kirk clarified. “We also have a centre hang which consists of four Cohesion CO-8 cabinets and that covers the thrust that comes out from the centre of the stage. We also have CO-8’s stacked in various places across the subs or the stage to fill out little gaps.”

Kirk revealed that they had just played Canberra’s GIO stadium with the same configuration of sixteen Cohesion CO-12 cabinets and they were able to reach back of stadium with no problem.

GIS AG Introduces Chain Hoist Tailored To The Entertainment IndustryFrom the beginning of 2017, Swiss electric chain hoist manufacturer GIS AG is replacing its LCH series with the LP series, which offers entertainment rigging professionals a lifting solution that is tailored to their sector.

The LP series includes the much-anticipated LP500, with up to 60% greater lifting capacity, IP65 as standard and very quiet running at a maximum 65 dB—a key feature for the theatre and live events marketplace.

The specific requirements of the entertainment industry, such as increased capacity in one fall operation, low dead weight, low noise emission and suitability for outdoor use, were given priority throughout the design and manufacture of the LP500 concept.

The LP500 has a robust construction, is simple in its assembly and does not contain any sensitive electronics. All shaft-hub connections are built in a self-centering polygonal design, meaning disassembly and assembly is faster with no special tools required. Wearing parts such as the chain or chain wheel can also be replaced within a few steps and without disassembly of the entire chain hoist.

A self-contained, helical cut, three-stage transmission with permanent grease lubrication ensures quieter operation, with noise emission reduced from 75 dB to 65 dB due to this feature in the chain hoist housing, along with the chain wheel with five pockets, and the horizontal and vertical supported chain.

Available with BGV D8, BGV D8+ or BGV C1 motor, three- and single-phase designs (except C1) are available. As per BGV C1 design criteria, LP500 has interfaces for path and load measurement.

The entire chain fall is designed with a statistical safety factor of at least 8:1 (ISO M5, FEM 2m), meaning wear of the components is decreased and the life cycle is extended four times, to 1,600 hours (ISO M5, FEM 2m) in comparison to the previous model at identical lifting capacity. A case-hardened and manganese phosphated profile steel chain offers a 15% higher capacity, compared to conventional

round steel chains. Furthermore, the chain has excellent corrosion resistance and improved dry running properties.

With the BGV D8 motor, the lifting capacity of the LP500 is 800kg in one fall operation, compared to 500kg with the previous model, or an increase of 60% (ISO M3, FEM 1 Bm) in one fall operation.

LP500 also comes with IP65 rating as standard, offering protection against dust and water ingress,

The LP series boasts an abundance of inbuilt features engineered specifically for entertainment applications, with a bonus of a three-year warranty offered with the product.

Penn Elcom Just Got Cooler!Global flightcase hardware and 19 inch racking manufacturer Penn Elcom has introduced the new FT80-Q, a cooling unit for active heat management in cupboards, closets and other enclosed environments.

The product was developed to fit into sealed enclosures housing 19 inch racking systems and servers where hot air is not being expelled. These style of enclosures have a high risk of thermal / component failure as the inbuilt fans only re-cycle hot air, so additional cooling is essential for the well-being of the equipment.

The FT80-Q has been designed to efficiently extract air for rack cooling in these situations. The product comes with a drill template to allow easy installation, creating an extraction hole and then fitting a cover to keep the overall cabinet / rack enclosure looking smart and streamlined. Its fan has numerous potential applications, but was originally designed to complement Penn’s extensive 19 inch racking range.

The product also has an operating low noise specification of 22.5 dB (0.3 Sone), which makes it ideal for low-noise environments including theatres, conference halls, presentation suites, lecture halls and boardrooms.

The powerful 28 CFM (cubic feet of air moved per metre) airflow shifts 47.6 cubic metres per hour at 2000 RPM of

the 9-bladed fan, ensuring everything in the space will remain cool and comfortable and suffer less heat fatigue. Measuring just 80mm, the fan is also small enough to be neatly ensconced just about anywhere in or on a cabinet.

The FT80-Q runs at 12V DC, drawing 200mA, has 2 x DC in/out sockets for power and is completely supplied with a 500mA universal PSU. A thermal sensor accessory can be plugged in to the temperature sensor socket, which is set to start operating at 40 degrees and will reset at 30 degrees or minus two. The accessory is supplied with an acrylic adhesive pad to be positioned in an area where it can detect the ambient temperature of the equipment being cooled.

The FT80-Q can be installed quickly and easily into any wooden cabinet using an awl, a cross-headed screwdriver (4 screws are provided with the product) and a 79 cm (3⅛ inch) hole cutter. It can also be fitted into plastic cases and rack units utilizing a different exterior grill kit.

Once mounted, the r 12V DC PSU needs hooking up via the input socket, and a second fan unit can be daisy-chained and run from the same 500mA power supply using a CRC-LINK cable.

INTERVIEW 36E T A F e b r u a r y 2 0 1 7

The Business Of Lighting Balloonsby Thomas Richard Prakasam

I must admit that when I was approached to do an interview about Lighting Balloons, I was a little hesitant. Is it really a sustainable business? Is there much technology involved? Boy was I in for a surprise. Many of you might have seen one of these balloons – in 2008, between 500 to 600 Airstar balloons were used for the F1 race and since then it has become a common feature at the annual event. So I headed down to the offices of Partex International to meet with Pascal Petitjean who also happens to be the co-founder of AIRSTAR for a chat. Partex is responsible for Airstar’s business across Asia-Pacific. Airstar is considered the inventor and world’s leader of lighting balloon technology.

Here is another admission. It was one of the most enjoyable interviews I have had. Pascal is down to earth and very amiable. Partex was established in 1993 in Singapore – that is a long history of 24 years. The company has a subsidiary in Japan, a Partner in Indonesia and Distributors in Australia, Korea and Malaysia.

INTERVIEW 37E T A F e b r u a r y 2 0 1 7

ETA: Give us a little background about yourself?Pascal: I graduated from the engineering school of Lyon, France, and became a Plant Manager in the family-run business – Petitjean S.A. (a world leader in street and stadium lighting poles). I then moved to Singapore in 1987 as the company’s Asia Business Director. For 5 years I sold street lighting poles, stadium poles throughout the region.

ETA: How did Partex International come about?Pascal: I decided to branch out on my own and add more solutions so as to enable me to offer more options to my clients. I chose Singapore as the base as I had started here and had built over the years many connections. There was also competency available here in terms of technical staff. So Partex represented three companies including Petitjean S.A. with the other two companies involved in electrical and steel solutions.

ETA: What was one of the more interesting sales in the early years of Partex?Pascal: Well a golf course in Indonesia needed lighting but they did not want lighting poles or trenches to be seen during the day. We thought about it and presented them with an idea of periscope style lighting. They loved it but unfortunately before we can proceed to install them there was political upheaval and the project did not go through. Luckily we were able to sell the concept and solution to golf courses in the Philippines and Korea. Then the 97 financial crisis happened and it became difficult for us to sell the pole.

ETA: How did you get involved in Airstar?Pascal: I read a newspaper report from France about

a company creating lighting balloons. I was already into lighting and I am always on the lookout for creative solutions. So I packed my bags, went to see the owner and became a stakeholder with Airstar. As the company was a recent start-up, my timing was great as it allowed me to enter the company quickly as a shareholder.

ETA: Where are Airstar products manufactured?Pascal: We have a factory in France which employs 70 to 80 people. We also have a small factory in USA – this is mainly to facilitate priority requests within America.

ETA: What was your first Airstar project?Pascal: This was around 1994 where we supplied two balloons for the opening of the Raffles Marina Country Club in Tuas, Singapore. We then picked up and started to sell Airstar lighting solutions in Japan, Korea and so forth. The initial sales were mainly to support events.

ETA: What are some of the advantages that a Lighting Balloon offers?Pascal: Normally for an event, in the past, companies would use floodlights to light up the area. The problem with this is the size of the floodlight and the glare that it produces. With Airstar balloons, we offer the right fabric, right transparency, correct light fixture and temperature, good resistance and most importantly safety. A qualitative light with no glare that still achieves one’s objective.

ETA: How has the product evolved?Pascal: One area where we are now actively involved in is the movie industry. We have created solutions where our lighting balloons have provided a more natural look for the cameras. One project we are most proud of is Titanic where James Cameron used our solutions. In 2003, Airstar received a Technical Oscar for the lighting technology used in Titanic.

Beyond that, our solutions have also been used for Rescue work. 15 years ago a building collapsed in Korea and we went there to volunteer our services. This helped us also to understand the needs and offer solutions that ensures that our lighting balloons are easy to deploy, offer sufficient brightness and reduce fatigue of rescue workers. Since then our lighting balloons have been deployed in the region for such situations. We have also supplied our lighting balloons for construction work – so we have gone beyond our initial market segment.

ETA: Is there concern about copycat products?Pascal: Of course there are copycat products. However it is not easy to duplicate our solutions 100% due to our technological expertise. Our clients understand and realise that they may be paying more but there is no need to worry about the reliability and our service dedication.

ETA: Back to lighting balloons for events, can you provide us with some figures?Pascal: In Singapore we support about 1000 events in average per year. This includes sales of our balloons as well as rental. 5 years ago we decided to set up a 100% owned subsidiary in Japan. This was personally very challenging because you either succeed or you don’t. Thankfully we are in the right track.

ETA: What has contributed to the success of Partex International?Pascal: The quality and reputation of our products has allowed us to penetrate many markets. This together with a great team has been a core aspect of our success. We are not just selling a product but rather our service and our passion to our products. We have many different products and that helps us but we also need to be creative in our

approach to solutions and that is where we add value to our clients.

ETA: Looking at your showroom, you seem to have expanded on your solutions…Pascal: We have expanded in terms of complementary solutions. For example we can provide furniture, BBQ cooking system, LEDs which complement for example an outdoor event. All the solutions first and foremost are quality products from Italy, Germany and France. It is important for us that our products are reliable and that our clients are satisfied.

ETA: On a personal level, how do you feel about your journey thus far?Pascal: When I landed in Singapore I was a wide-eyed youngster who wanted to accomplish as much as he can. Singapore is a good base due to its infrastructure and cosmopolitan nature. As years passed, I felt that this country was truly a gateway to Asia. Asia throws up interesting challenges and that is where my engineering skills come into play. I am proud of what we have achieved but I also feel that we have more distance to cover. On a personal note I have made some wonderful friends and have created precious memories along the way.

Zouk Moves Into its New HomeWhilst building on its heritage and culture, Zouk’s new home elevates clubbers experience with state of the art technology and design

Zouk, a much beloved institution in Singapore that helped to redefine the entertainment scene in Singapore and globally recognised as one of the best

nightlife spots, has finally moved to its new home at Clarke Quay, a nightlife and entertainment precinct in Singapore. The ownership of Zouk was changed from founder Lincoln Cheng to Genting Hong Kong in the last quarter of 2015 when it was acquired by the conglomerate. Prior to the acquisition, the Singapore Government had given notice to Zouk to move from its original location at Jiak Kim Street due to redevelopment purposes and it took Zouk a few years before finding a location that it felt befitted its image and requirements. The new premise is about the same size as the original venue but the interiors now sees a refreshed new look.

“The Zouk brand is an institution that is iconic to the local scene and is consistently recognized on the global clubbing stage as one of the best nightlife spots across its years of

operation. With this relocation, we saw an opportunity to evolve with the culture of music, a chance to create a new atmosphere that will breathe new life to the brand with the promise of new experiences. This big move has been much anticipated by all and I couldn't be happier with the result of a spectacular super club that is the embodiment of progression with nods to the history that we all have come to love. Leading the relocation has been exciting, I’m truly honoured to be a part of it and I am confident that fans will love this refresh” said Hui Lim, Chief Information Officer, Genting Hong Kong.

The ConceptHoused within Clarke Quay’s Cannery Block and spanning across two floors, the new Zouk complex is once again a collection of unique concepts with the retention of signature dance stages Zouk and Phuture, the recently launched restaurant and bar, Red Tail, as well as a soon-to-be-unveiled fourth concept.

Designed by interior design firm, Independent Consultants, the concept of the new spaces revolves around the idea of evolution in the music scene and club culture. Intended as a progression of what revellers both old and new loved about Zouk’s former home, the new spaces follow an overarching neo-industrial and futuristic aesthetic inspired by the underground rave clubs and refurbished warehouses in New York and Berlin. Across the two revamped outlets, the space features five distinct thematic concept bars, and custom-made furnishings that are specifically designed to further establish the industrial appeal of the new space.

Continuing with the neo-industrial scheme, the interiors of Phuture are speckled with finishing touches of dramatic glitz to complement the music that will be played. Staged with a circular dance floor and surrounded by details including custom retro themed bar stools, vinyl casted tables, a second art piece and mural titled Static Party by Jahan Loh laid against the wall, moving overhead lights and LED backed DJ stage, Phuture boasts a refined and throwback appeal that is reminiscent of the underground disco clubs in New York.

The Big SurpriseThe biggest surprise of its new home at Clarke Quay is the ability to merge both Zouk and Phuture to form a superclub-like space to accommodate bigger acts in town and to cater to events of a larger scale. A strategic design feature made to heighten the versatility of the space so as to cater across different scales of events and happenings, the walls separating both outlets are actually removable soundproof double walls. The design enables two bars to be combined to form a fuller sized bar with strategically placed LED screens to project the action up front onscreen, when the space is combined. Other modular features include the two-tired platform seatings in Zouk, as well as the seatings allocated around the dance floors of both outlets.

“Evolution is the theme and the overall concept of the design of this new space so we wanted to play around with the idea of a space that is dynamic and versatile. While its predecessor is known for four distinct yet independent outlets, the relocation has provided us with the opportunity to break down the barriers of stand-alone spaces to inject flexibility and coherence to the signature outlets without losing the essence of both Zouk and Phuture” said Phillips Connor, Founder of Independent Consultants.

Zouk is accessed through a dramatically lit and sculptural tunnel as a prequel to the scene ahead

Art piece and mural titled Static Party by Jahan Loh laid against the wall at Phuture

Zouk is accessed through a dramatically lit and sculptural tunnel as a prequel to the scene ahead, Zouk remains as the largest outlet and the key plaza of the entire complex. Decked with two floors and flanked with three independent bars over three corners, Zouk continues to be the main stage for electronic dance music and the dedicated arena for headline acts.

Throughout the space, the neo-industrial theme echoes with elements including raw brick, rusticated metal and concrete. Furniture pieces are constructed with machine-aged detailing in brass tones and include clever and convenient hideaway storage under sofas, barstools and tables. Finished with other real construction materials for a steam-punk edge, the two-storey space is constructed to exude gritty underground cool.

Phuture on the other hand will continue to deliver its signature sound of hip-hop, R&B and contemporary urban tunes in an intimate space. Accessible through a different tunnel lined with a graffiti-esque artwork from local artist Jahan Loh, the piece The Cosmic Rabbit Hole into the Phuture is meant to reflect a street subculture that is synonymous with the hip-hop sound.

PROJECTS 42E T A F e b r u a r y 2 0 1 7

The Centrepiece: A Massive Light StructureAn immediate centrepiece of Zouk is the seemingly hefty looking light structure that is suspended above the dance floor, and affectionately known as the “mothership”. A custom installation designed and programmed by Barcelona-based lighting design firm, LEDSCONTROL, the centrepiece was constructed around the idea of creating a sensational piece that could bring about cosmic immersion of light and dance. The diameter of this centrepiece is 7m x 1.20m. Meticulously pieced together in Barcelona with lightweight metal commonly used on aircraft, the structure features a theatre of lights that can create 120 light patterns across a 360-degree view, resulting in an infinite possibility of lighting combinations. The structure is surrounded by eight perimeter pieces that are shaped like arrows that are intended to “draw” the crowd into the centre where the journey into a cosmic exploration of sights and sounds will take place.

“We approached this project by constantly asking ourselves how we can create an icon for Zouk, how we can create a standout piece that will be representative of the club’s new home while retaining it’s identity. It was not an easy feat creating a centrepiece worthy of the unique identity that the club has amassed over the years, but when we did, the result was this out-of-this-world structure that I’m sure, has never been done before and I am extremely

excited to showcase this explosion of light that the UFO and mothership-like structure was made for, to all of Zouk’s fans” says Rebecca Sanchez Pastor, founder of LEDSCONTROL.

One key challenge for LEDSCONTROL was the weight limitation. This was resolved by using lightweight materials. However, another challenge was to create a design that did not block the view of the party-goers from the second-floor balconies. Finding the balance between keeping to the original design and ensuring good visibility as well as the weight limitations was definitely a challenge the team had to resolve creatively - which they did.

The “mothership” is able to portray different kind of light effects, through its different layers. “We wanted the piece to be multi-faceted and so we built in in a way that it can put together an infinite number of different looks depending on the combination of layers used,” commented Rebecca.

From inside out, the first and innermost layer is a LED pixel matrix distribution which lives inside of the “mothership” - the pixels can be seen through laser-cut pattern holes of varying sizes. The effect from this is quite unique because depending on how it is programmed, guests can see a “glitter-effect” on the light along with the dynamism of the pixels that gives a very interesting effect to it.

Page 43: FEBRUARY - Spinworkz Pte · PDF fileVOL 18 ISSUE 2 FEBRUARY 2017 04 FIRST WORDS 06 NEWS ... Stardraw Design 7, ... angle with full colour mixing capabilities

PROJECTS 43E T A F e b r u a r y 2 0 1 7

The next layer outside of it are the lights, which are hidden between the flakes of the “mothership”, and their function is to illuminate the piece in a subtle way. The lights are made with the digital LED tape which has individual control across every 8.5cm, so it can be as dynamic as necessary depending on what kind of music the DJ is playing.

The third layer or effect as the lasers which are plated all around the “mothership” with a square-shaped reflector each, and one in the centre with a pyramid reflector. These layers are lowered with the linear actuators when required. “So it is a great surprise when they are lowered, showing another facet of our unique piece,” says a pleased Rebecca.

The LED elements include 850m of RGBW 24W digital LED strip, 3500 pixel Dot 6 x SM RGB 12V, 180 PS 24DC IP67, 60 PS 12DC IP67 LED complemented with 200 DMX-SPI converters all controlled via Art-net node Madrix.

The lighting fixtures within the centrepiece as well as along the perimeter includes 16 units of ROBE Mini Pointe, eight units of Clay Paky Alpha beam 700, six units of Clay Paky Alpha Spot 300, 14 units of Martin Atomic 3000 LED and four units of Martin Atomic 3000, 22 units of Martin Rush Mini Profile, 28 units of EK Lights Orb Blinder, four units of Chormtech Jarag Spar30, 16 units of Elation ACL 360 Bars, eight units of ADJ 1200 Asteroid and 32 units of ADJ Event Bar. These are complemented with a range of laser solutions. The moving lights and effects are controlled by MA Lighting GrandMA2 whilst the LEDs are controlled via MADRIX. The Unique Zouk SoundZouk has retained the original sound system that was custom created by the renowned late audio engineer, Gary Stewart. Zouk and Phuture will continue to provide the warn and crisp quality sound that Zouk has always been known for. Recalibrated on a yearly basis for up-to-date

configuration personally by Stewart and now by the Zouk sound team, the sound system is a one-of-a-kind creation that is specially equalized to suit all genres of dance music.

As can be expected bringing the original system to the new space did create some challenges. The new space covers a smaller area as compared to the old space and also has a slightly different configuration. The old Zouk dance floor had equal length and breadth with no obstruction, which made the placement of the speakers very straightforward. The new space had some challenges with the placement of the speakers as there is a stairway built into the Zouk dance floor and the speakers could not be placed at equal distance between each other. “We had of course anticipated that the time alignment/phase shift for each stack was an issue to overcome in the new space,” said Rexx Lim, Technical Manager (Audio, Visual & Lighting), Zouk Singapore.

“With the acoustic treatment that the room offered, we deployed Smaartlive to capture and analyze the phase data and we were able to balance that out with high fidelity and an enormous high sound pressure level to achieve optimum coverage for the space,” highlighted Rexx. The original sound system is more than adequate to handle the sound coverage without the need for additional speakers, in the new space.

The original speakers offer twin 1000 watts, 18-inch subwoofers, a quad 3600 watts 15-inch cabinet, with twin acoustic lens HF/UHF mid-range horn loaded with two coaxial neodymium compression drivers and four GSA custom bullet tweeter arrays flown over the dance floor for each stack. There are a total of four stacks in Zouk. One

important gear that was retained in order for these stacks to produce the right sound was the GSA(RLA) electronic crossover filters. One element however that was changed, was the employment of a new amplifier – the Powersoft X4. “We did run the system through different brands of amplifiers and finally found one that was able to give the system a new life – a boost with open, warm and crisp sound.” added Rexx. Rexx also highlights that the Zouk technical team also ensures regular software upgrades and that the sound system is constantly EQ-ed in order to continue to meet Zouk’s exacting standards.

The next interior highlight of the Zouk outlet, is most definitely the DJ console and the front stage. Crafted in organic fluid forms of concrete as a nod to Zouk’s heritage, the DJ console sits in the centre of the front stage and between three VIP seating pods for an overlooking view of the dance floor. The front stage also features an LED backdrop against a raw brick wall for an extended display of visuals and a two-metre above ground catwalk where performances can take place.

The DJ console features the latest Pioneer mixer model and CD player with monitoring duties assigned to a pair of L’Acoustics KARA system. “The KARA is able to handle high SPL and is a system that most DJs from around the world are familiar with,” states Rexx.

The Sound in PhutureFour GS “Americana” also custom created by Gary Stewart and brought from the old venue are installed within Phuture. The tri-amp speaker system utilizes two 15-inch bass drivers mounted horizontally in a ported bass reflex enclosure. The high-end consists of a fin-loaded radial horn running on a high-power compression driver for the mid-

range and a tweeter completed with two large multi-fold hyperbolic horn capable of delivering full-power frequency response down to 30Hz. There are also two 18-inch drivers specially designed for high power low frequency application – 1000 watts RMS and two GSA custom bullet tweeter arrays flown over the dance floor.

The speaker system in Phuture is running on a GSA (RLA) electronic crossover and four units of Powersoft X series amps to drive the stacks.

The DJ console at Phuture features a Pioneer Nexus 2 system with monitoring duties assigned to two bi-amp GSA Cube speakers. The speakers feature a 15-inch coaxial driver and two multi-fold hyperbolic horn with a single 18-inch driver that was specifically designed for smaller spaces without compromising on bass performance.

Old vs NewTo the sentimentalist, it would never be the same but that would only be as far as the space is concerned. Zouk has put in much effort in retaining what it is well known for with a twist of modernity and an eye-catching “mothership” that complements the unique Zouk sound. There is no doubt that Zouk will continue to build on its heritage and grow its flock.

Video Projection Mapping At The King Abdulaziz Center For World Culture Grand Opening

SAUDI ARABIA

360° projection mapping made possible with d3 technologies solutions

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has officially inaugurated the King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture, whose debut was marked by stunning video projection

mapping across the streamlined, modernist façade. Belgium-based Visual Solutions crafted the week-long, nighttime display powered by 52 projectors and six 4x4pro media servers with VFC cards from d3 Technologies.

The King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture is an initiative of Saudi Aramco, the Kingdom’s major oil company. It is located in Dhahran, Saudi Aramco’s hometown. Norwegian architectural firm, Snohetta, designed the building, which features a 200,000-book library, cinema, auditorium, exhibition halls, museum and more. Its goal is to foster cultural development throughout the Kingdom.

Filmmaster MEA Events, produced the grand opening with technical director, Julien Poncelet, heading the team. VER supplied all the video equipment and serviced the event on site.

Visual Solutions’ brief for the video projection mapping evolved from an initial 180º design to a 270º mapping to a final 360º projection mapping covering the entire building. UV mapping of the structure was done by d3 Rental partner By-Lex, based in Cologne, Germany.

“There was no question of using anything other than d3 for this show,” says Jo Pauly, Managing Director and Head of Production at Visual Solutions, who says the extensive

projector set up was pre-visualized in d3. “d3 helped us position the projectors, check how the projection would react on the building in terms of shadow and light output and even deformation. It was a great tool for visualizing and predicting our lens types and output power.”

The Visual Solutions team also found other advantages to using d3. “The ability to use multiple editors on one system to perform cable and wireless alignment was key to this project,” Pauly reports. “And versioning made it easy for the content producers.”

The eye-popping video projection mapping depicted chapters from the cultural history of Saudi Arabia from ancient times to today; it also ushered viewers through the new building, which was shown in beautifully abstract wireform, solid and tiled modes. Content was created by Belgium-based Dirty Monitor.

“We used up to 10 outputs per machine, and the 4x4pros worked like a charm,” says Pauly.

In addition to the video projection on the façade, the grand opening also featured a holographic LED show driven by a d3 v.2.5 system and the mapping of a model of the building, which was run from a d3 4x4pro.

At Visual Solutions Michael “Mica” Stroobants was the project leader/manager and Tim Lerat the logistics team leader. At By-Lex the d3 team included Lex Ter Heurne, Kjell Reintjes, Uwe Schroder and Patrick Bellens. The projection team consisted of David Vandevelde, Bert Decock, Siel De Schepper, Dries Van Havermaet, Oliver Dier, Sander De Wandel, Sander De Schrijver, Benjamin Oehl and Kevin Roten.

After a record-breaking premiere at the Sydney Opera House, the recreation of the 1956 Broadway production of My Fair Lady travels to Brisbane,

Melbourne and Sydney’s Capitol Theatre in 2017.

In honour of My Fair Lady’s 60th Anniversary, GFO and Opera Australia recruited the original Eliza Doolittle, Dame Julie Andrews, to direct this landmark production. The sets, costumes and lighting are based on the original 1956 design with a few more up-to-date touches, like seamless revolving stages and automated lighting.

Of course it would have been silly to try recreate the original audio design and so Michael Waters was appointed to give it a welcome 21st century makeover with JPJ Audio’s assistance.

“We did see the original audio spec for the 1956 production which was only one page,” said Michael. “The sound pre-show check was ‘turn on an amplifier, have the reel to reel

wound back to such a counter point and then press play at this time’. That was it!”

It was up to Michael to respect the intent of the original audio for the show whilst satisfying the modern audience who have a totally different perception and expectation of audio these days.

Apparently Dame Julie was very excited to learn that Michael could introduce surround sound which bought a whole new world to the production.

“I was able to occasionally produce some soundscapes throughout the show,” commented Michael, who was mixing on a DiGiCo SD10 console. “It’s not a sound effect heavy show but it does have its moments where you can have some fun - especially the Ascot horse race!”Michael describes the Dame Joan Sutherland theatre as a rather dead space (dry as a nun’s proverbial were his exact words) once the audience is seated and so to liven it up, he

employed some subtle reverbs around the room to fill out the space.

“It’s such a funny piece with lots of comedic lines in the show and when the audience erupts into laughter, it would be easy to miss the subsequent dialogue,” Michael noted. “Being amplified we could push over the sound of the laughter and that also encourages the audience to keep laughing without fearing they’ll miss the next line.”

The PA was a mixture of L-Acoustics KIVA for the centre cluster, SB18’s for subs, 5XT’s for surrounds and delays, Meyer MSL-2 speakers for the dress circle and god’s proscenium, and Meyer UPM-2’s for front fill.

“I chose the UPM-2 speakers for their narrow 45 degree dispersion as the orchestra are not used to sitting in front of speakers,” explained Michael. “As the UPM-2’s are directional, they fire over their heads.”

Whilst the orchestra microphones are wide and varied, the cast are on DPA 4061 miniature omnidirectional microphones on Shure UR1M micro-bodypack transmitters.

“I think we kept true to the intent of the show,” he said. “It wasn’t over-amplified, it was just enough for every audience member to hear it clearly all the way to the gods at the back of the circle, and make the orchestra sound dynamic throughout the theatre.”
