V O L U M E 2 F E B R U A R Y 2 0 1 1 The Debt We Owe Message from the Party President 28 May 2011 The BC Conservative Party votes for its new leader (continued on page 2) Some of you may recall a popular country and western song from the 1950’s. The words included “another day older and deeper in debt”. Over 50 years later, these words would be most appropriate for the taxpayers of British Columbia! To be precise, collectively, BC taxpayers are now over $47 billion in debt (total provincial debt for the 2010/201 1 fiscal year). The current government (Finance Minister Hansen) projects this to increase to $60 billion by 2013! T o service this incredible debt will cost us $8 million per day. In addition to the debt servicing, we are also facing huge increases for many years in the future for medical premiums as well as BC Hydro rates. All this coming from a fiscally responsible government?? Little wonder that British Columbians are looking for a real conservative government. The BC Conservative Party is on schedule for many important events to be held in 2011. As reported in our January newsletter, our Leadership Convention is scheduled for May 28, 2011. It will be held at the Sheraton Vancouver Guildford Hotel l ocated in Surrey. The Party will be accepting nominations from Leadership candidates until March 29. This will give all candidates a minimum of 2 months to solicit support from Party members throughout the Province. Registration information for the Leadership Convention will be posted on our website by the end of February. In order to be eligible to participate at the Convention, a person must have been a Party member for a minimum of 21 days prior to the Leadership date of May 28. The Party has now commenced the process to develop an election platform for the next general election (or any possible by-election that could be held as early as this year). The platform will be based on our Core Conservative Values and our policies which are currently under review. Party members have been invited to submit proposals for this process and the response has been overwhelming! The final document will be adopted at a general meeting of the Party later this year. On January 29, the Party held a meeting in Surrey to solicit ideas that would differentiate BC Conservatives from the other major political
