Potentate’s Remarks from the Installation of Officers

GoodEvening,IwanttoassuretheNobilitythatwhileintheofficeofthePotentateIwillcontinue to carry on the great work of El Kalah temple through itsfundraisers,charityandsocialactivitiesandprotectthefinancialwellbeingandcontinueineverywaypossibletoincreaseitsmembership.Thesetasksarenot something Iwill take lightly andwill devotemyself to themwitheveryounceofenergyIcanmuster.

Nobles,ladies,guestsandmasonicfamilyIstandbeforeyouahumbledandblessedman.HumbledbecauseIhavebeenchosentoleadagroupofmenwhohavecommittedthemselvestothepurposeofhelpingchildreninneedthroughserviceandraisingawarenesstothegreatphilanthropythatisShrinersHospitalforChildren.

HumbledbecauseofthegreatfraternityofFreemasonrythathasseenfitnotonlytoadmitmetotheirnumbersbutalsotoembracemeandhonormewithmany awards, ranks of distinction, and accolades despite allmyquirksandfaults.

BlessedtohaveasayoungmangrowingupinCarbonCountypositivemalerolemodelsaroundlikeJamesRobertsonandJohnMcCurdy.MenthatIwouldonedaycometofindoutwereFreemasonsandinspiremetoalsocommitmyselftothegreatviewsFreemasonryhasinaimforourfamilies,communitiesandtheworld.

BlessedtohavebeenmentoredandnurturedinmymasonicjourneybymenlikeLarryFeilden,BlaineSimons,RidgeGilmourandGlenCook.HumbledandblessedtohaveamotherwhoworkedtwojobstoprovideformeandtoseetoitthatIwenttouniversityandkeptmeoutofacoalminewhereIhavelostmanyclosefriends.

18yearsand2weeksagomylifechangedforevermykidneysfailed,Iwentondialysisandawaitedforatransplantthatwouldeventuallycome3yearslater.AlltheplansanddreamsIhadatthetimesuddenlyseemedtodisappear.Theofficeinahistoricbuildingdowntown,thedreamofhavinganimportantjobwithallthefinancialandsocialtrappingsthatsurrounditandbeingaforceofchangeinthisworldseemedimpossibleatthetime.After my first transplant, there were many complications that wouldn’tallowmetoreturntowhatmostconsideranormallife.Havingdevotedmostofmytwentiestofightingkidneydiseasemanyofmyfriendsweremarriedwithfamilies.IfoundthatmysocialcirclehadshrunkconsiderablyAfriendof mine approached me and told me that masonry would be a good

experienceforme.IwouldmeetsomenewpeopleandIcoulddoaslittleorasmuchasIfeltcomfortablewithanditwouldgetmeoutofthehouse.IamsogratefulhedidandIwillalwaysbethankfultomymasonicbrotherLeonCrockettforhisrecommendationtojointhisaugustgroupofmen.

SinceIhavejoinedthisfraternityIhavealwayshadanofficewithinthisgreat historic building downtown. Since joining I have been presentednumerousopportunitiestobeaforceforgoodintheworld.Ihavehadbeenblessed to travel most of the English-speaking world, I have dined withEnglishnobilityandIrishstatesmenandhavepracticedphilanthropyinwaysI never imagined. All of this is and was because of my association withmasonry.

However,thegreatestrewardIhavereceivedfrombeingaffiliatedwiththisinstitutioniswhenIsponsoreda7-year-oldgirlfortreatmentatShrinersHospitalforChildren.ShehadonelegthatwasshorterthantheotherandthruthemiraclesthatarepreformeddailyinourhospitalsIreceivewordtenyearslaterthatshedancedatherseniorprom.ThatisthedifferencethatoneShrinercanmake.Ilikemanyofthemeninthisroomhavebecomeaforceforgoodintheworld.

I thank God every day that he andmodernmedicine has seen fit topreservemylifewithnotonebuttwokidneytransplants.OccasionallyIaskhim“Godcouldn’tIhaddoneallthiswithoutthekidneyfailure,withahigh-profilejobandallthatcomesalongwithit.”Theansweristhesameeverytime.Wellnoteverytimethefirsttimewas“Idon’tthinksoJason”.Alltheresthavebeen“openyoureyeandearswhatareyoustupid?”

MostofthethingsIwantedtohappen18yearsagohappenedjustnotthewayIthoughttheywould.WhenIcametorealizethisItrulyunderstoodhow blessed I was to be kidney patient, a Freemason and especially aShriner.

InclosingIwishtothankalltheDivanfortheirwillingnesstoserveandtothefriendsandfamilyforcomingthiseveningtoshowsupportforyourlovedonesandforjoiningusinthisgreatwork.Continuetodream,continuetopersevere,andcontinuetolookfortheblessingsinlife.Rememberwhendisasterstrikesyou.Lifewillbenobetterorworseonlydifferent

Congratulations to the 2017 Officers Chartered August 16, 1892i; this year El Kalah Shrine Temple celebrates its one-hundred-

twenty-fifth year serving the community and the children. This is an accomplishment that should be well recognized by all Nobles. Thank you and give yourself a Hand!

The derivation of the name El Kalah means “The Fortress”ii. And the fortress has remained a significant part of Utah masonry for those many years and continues to be a stronghold of support for children and charity.

George M. Gadsby, one of El Kalah’s Illustrious Potentates and who was active in Utah Masonry, in both of the Rites and a member of Argenta Lodge No. 3 was instrumental and played the leading role in the financial reorganization of the Utah Power and Light Co when he was Vice President of that company as it became a publicly owned corporation.iii It appears Illustrious Brother Gadsby not only worked to bring light to the community but strived to deliver more light to the Fraternity as well.

He made a proclamation during his term as Potentate. It states: “To all Sons of the Desert – ‘GAMUL CUM IMSHIE,’ which is Arabic for ‘UP CAMEL, GET GOING’ and that means bring in Petitions!! ‘The caravan is being formed. Search out the un-regenerates that they may travel to Mecca with us and become true Nobles of the Mystic Shrine.”iv

May Illustrious Brother Gadsby’s Proclamation ring true today as it did back then, may the Fortress continue delivering light and relief to the community for another one-hundred- twenty-five years and I know through the leadership of this year’s officers the Camel gets up and gets going. I congratulate you and wish El Kalah and all Nobles therein great success for the ensuing year.

From the Marshal’s Desk

As I look out my window at all the snow and cold, dreaming of warmer places. I realize it time to start preparing for this year’s Parades.

Why do we Parade? We have many reasons, for me, it’s the fun and to have Pride in the thing we Shriners do.

Every parade I’ve been in I have hear shouts from the onlooker “WE LOVE YOU SHRINERS”.

For whatever your reason, I would like to challenge each and every one of you to participate in at least one of the parades, that goes for the ladies as well.

The first call out Parade of the season is the St.Patrick’s Day Parade in Salt Lake City on Saturday March the 18, 2017. We will have the Yellowstone bus and the Ladies are welcome to ride in it.

I’m also looking for some Nobles for the Honor Guard.

The Madsen Family Legacy

For more than 140 years, Shriners have carried the values and mission of the fraternity across generations of families. To recognize Legacy families, Shriners International has designated February as Legacy Month to honor those families who display a keen sense of pride and commitment to the Shriners’ fraternity within their own family lineage. Members of the program receive a gold Legacy pin and signed certificate from the Imperial Potentate and Imperial Recorder to commemorate their membership in the program. For many men, being a Shriner is a family tradition. From one generation to the next, Shriners have enjoyed a unique brotherhood and shared in an important, more personal fraternal tradition and legacy.

One family that recently extended their Shrine lineage is the Madsen family. Paul Madsen, son of Imperial Potentate Al Madsen joined El Kalah Shriners of Salt Lake City in the summer of 2012. Paul, a pilot for Southwest Airlines, said, “Watching [his father’s] passion for the fraternity and for Shriners Hospitals for Children® engendered a goal of becoming a noble someday.” During his father’s time as a member of the Imperial Divan, Paul has been able to interact with the children and patient ambassadors of Shriners Hospitals, which also motivated him to join the fraternity.

Since becoming a Shriner, Paul’s relationship with his father has taken on new depths as the two celebrate their fraternal bond. Paul and his father have spent a substantial amount of time together at Shrine events such as the Rose Bowl Parade and during hospital visits. Particularly important to Paul was his father’s presentation of a philanthropic award to Southwest Airlines at the Houston hospital. “I hope to give the fraternity more than I get from it and someday earn the opportunity to lead,” said Paul. “I will volunteer my time, passion, and charity to Shriners Hospitals for Children and the fraternity when I can, and will do so in an honorable manner.”

Paul hopes to continue the Madsen Shrine legacy and has started mentoring his son in Masonry.
