PASTOR’S GREETING \\

Dear Trinity Church Family,

Soon we begin our twelfth and final journey together to the cross. As we prepare to enter Lent in two weeks, I invite us to make this spiritual pilgrimage with intentionality. Never in 45 years of ministry do I recall Ash Wednesday and St. Valentine’s Day falling on the same day, nor April Fool’s Day and Easter Sunday coinciding on the calendar. These convergences of sacred and cultural events call us to reflect on how we will balance chocolate consumption and Christian conviction!

Seriously, the 40 days of Lent are a time of spiritual introspection, renewed commitment to worship, and journeying with Jesus to Easter. Our 2018 Lenten pilgrimage is 24 Hours That Changed the World, based on the book by best-selling author Adam Hamilton. He is the pastor of the 21,000-member United Methodist Church of the Resurrection. Adam will be present in print and/or video in a dozen or more groups meeting at the church and in homes across the Denver-area during Lent. Watch the weekly bulletin and email for sign-up information.

The themes of the small groups will coincide with and complement my messages on six of the seven Sundays during Lent. All of the texts come from the Gospel of Mark and chronicle the final 24 hours of Jesus’ earthly life in significant detail. Often omitted from the Sunday lectionary, these accounts draw us into the drama and trauma of our Lord’s last day. The titles and themes of each Lenten study and message are:

1. The Last Supper: A Meal for the Ages 2. The Garden of Gethsemane: Stay Awake 3. Condemned by the Righteous: Enough to Make a Grown Man Cry 4. Jesus, Barabbas and Pilate: Crowds, Choices, Consequences5. The Torture and Humiliation of the King: Silent Suffering Servant 6. The Crucifixion: Last Words from the Cross I encourage you to join Sharon and me in sharing the meaningful study of 24 Hours That Changed the World. It may well change your life. And for good.

Yours in Christ,

An Invitation to Lenten Devotion:From Valentine’s to April Fool’s Day!

// LENT

I n his collection of Bengali poems, Rabindranath Tagor writes about the “Unsong Song.” He expresses words of sorrow that the song he had intended to sing has remained unsung because he has spent his days “stringing and

unstringing” his instrument.

In reflecting upon Tagor’s poem, Joyce Rupp writes:

Whenever I read these lines a certain sadness enters my soul. I think of how busy my days and nights are, of how I cram my calendar and my life so full at times that my glimpses of God are like a rare and endangered species. I yearn to have the song of God sung in my soul but I, too, keep stringing and unstringing my instrument. I get so preoccupied with the details and pressure of my schedule, with the hurry and worry of life, that I miss the song of goodness that is waiting to be sung through me.

Lent is a period forty days from Ash Wednesday to Holy Saturday (or Easter Eve), not counting Sundays. It is a time to slow down and pay attention to the song God has placed on your heart.

You can do this in a number of ways:• End or begin each day with prayer; reflect upon God’s presence in your life.• Meditate quietly; focus on your breathing.• Listen to music; reflect upon your own song.• Write a song to God; a traditional hymn or a hip-hop poem.• Go for a walk; pray silently for your neighbors and our world

As you pay attention to the song God has placed on your heart, remember – God’s love needs an instrument to give it voice and resonance. A piano is just a row of keys until someone touches them into life. A saxophone is an odd looking contraption until someone blows the breath of improvisation into being. A violin remains a mute stringed instrument until someone picks it up and touches the strings with songs.

During this Lenten season, reflect upon where you are called to be an instrument of God’s love in the world. Then open your lives to allow the melody of God to take shape and reverberate through your very being.

LENTEN BIBLE STUDIES

The Power of Story in the Crucifixion, February 18 & 25, 9:30-10:30amwith Rev. Lee Anderson-Harris

Have you ever wondered why the crucifixion narrative is different in each of the gospels? Perhaps each author wanted to tell the story in a certain way. Join Rev. Lee Anderson-Harris to explore these narratives and the power of story in this crucial event in our history. As we reflect on Jesus’ suffering and death during Lent, a closer look at these stories can bring new light to what his death means to Christians.

The study will be divided into two parts, meeting at Trinity from 9:30-10:30am:

• February 18 - Part I• February 25 - Part II

24 Hours that Changed the World, February 14 - March 31

Lenten small groups will gather weekly to study and discuss 24 Hours That Changed the World by Adam Hamilton. Chapter by chapter, this intimate look into the final day of Jesus’ life will explore the theological significance of events such as the Last Supper, the Garden of Gethsemane, and the Crucifixion. By diving into Jesus’ passion, for those whom he was close to and for all of humanity, we are invited to reflect upon how this one day in Jesus’ life holds rich significance and implications for our own lives today.

For a list of group facilitators and locations, please contact Pastor Tom Owens. Look for sign-up sheets in fellowship hall to find a group to join in your area.

CHURCH LIFE \\

Trinity’s Early Response Team (ERT) members, in conjunction with ERT members from the Rocky Mountain Conference and other Denver Metro churches joined forces to assist relief efforts in the aftermath of Hurricane

Harvey in South Texas. The Denver team helped two homeowners clean and secure their homes, which were located on the west side of the hurricane, from further damage. Thankfully, these homes did not experience the level of destruction that occurred in other areas of Texas.

The two homeowners the team helped differed from one another. The first appeared to be very resolute and had a definite recovery plan. The second was owned by a husband and wife, in which the wife broke down during our walk through saying she felt alone and forsaken, signs of psychological disaster trauma. She told Pastor Lynn, one of the team members, that she had relatives living in the area but not a single one had contacted her to check on her wellbeing or offer assistance. Pastor Lynn told the woman the team would take the place of her relatives and help her and her family clean the house so they could begin the recovery process, which was instrumental in helping the wife get through her trauma.

We felt really good about the work we had done during those four days. We felt as if we had sufficiently helped the first homeowner on her way to restoring her property. There were some concerns, however, whether the second family would take advantage of the cleaning and disinfecting that had been done to help restore their house.

Pastor Lynn also provided the Denver team with much needed spiritual support. She commented on how the mission was brought together by divine providence, especially since many of the members just met for the first time. Together we seemed to have a God given talent that was important to the team’s overall success, such as Jim Dillon, a roofing contractor, and Bart Glathar, a talented equipment manager. Also, Buddy Villines provided his pickup truck to transport materials which did not fit into the teams rented van.

Overall the deployment was a successful experience. Even though the mission was physically and emotionally draining for all concerned, dealing with insects, mold and 90-degree temperatures in very high humidity, it was also extraordinarily rewarding.

The front of the Trinity Sanctuary has its own trinity of symbolism. In the center is the brass pulpit given by Dr. Buchtel and on either side symbols of the sacraments; to the left is the baptismal font and to the right the communion table.

The communion table is made of oak and was a gift from Mrs. Humphrey B. Chamberlin as a memorial to her mother.

The Rocky Mountain Christian Advocate for December 27, 1888, reported that the communion table and accompanying sterling silver communion set were purchased for $700.00.

As can be seen in the lower photo, the table is finely carved. Inlaid on the front is the quotation from Luke 22, “THIS DO IN REMEMBRANCE OF ME.”

Humphrey Chamberlin was born in England in 1847 and with his family emigrated to New York in the 1850’s. In 1871 he married Alice Packard of Rome, New York. In 1880 they moved to Denver for his health. Along with his brothers and brother-in-law they built a real estate empire and became quite wealthy. Humphrey and Alice were among the primary contributors to the building of Trinity Methodist Episcopal Church.

In 1893 when the silver panic struck Colorado the Chamberlin companies lost most of their value, and Mr. and Mrs. Chamberlin returned to England to rebuild their lives. The Chamberlin family never returned to Denver, but their contributions live on in Trinity and Denver.

A special “thank you” to all who participated in the “Appreciative Inquiry Reveal” on January 21, and to all who were interviewed! Together we reflected on our most life-giving experiences at Trinity, along with our

hopes and dreams for the future.

Trinity Council will be reflecting more on the interviews in the months ahead. On a 50,000 foot-level, these themes emerged among all questions, indicating our hopes to remain a vibrant, intergenerational church in downtown Denver.

• Appreciation of children and youth activities• Value of small groups• Participation in and enjoyment of music• Involvement in and support of missions, especially local missions• Dynamic worship, both preaching and music

I appreciate the energy and involvement of the facilitators. One wrote, “All of our interviews were such productive and genuine conversations and we know something amazing will come of hundreds of similar discussions at our church.” Another added, “I thought it was interesting today to see and hear the shared themes in the responses. I had not expected to see so much agreement. Participating in this has really helped me to gain a better understanding of Trinity and of my own reasons for being at Trinity.”

Lastly, Brian Lee, our Lay Leader, is compiling the facilitator’s newsprint reports. Once completed, we’ll be able to reflect further on the narratives and stories shared by the facilitators.

MUSIC & ARTS \\

Judith Mitchell has served as Trinity’s Director of Music & Arts for 20 years! In celebration of this milestone, the Chancel Choir and Music & Arts Ministry have commissioned a choral piece from composer John Leavitt titled, Will

There Really Be a Morning? The text comes from a poem by Emily Dickinson. Dr. Leavitt will be at Trinity on Sunday, March 4 to conduct the Chancel Choir in the premiere performance of this work during the 11am worship service. The choir will also premiere his new arrangement of the beloved hymn For the Beauty of the Earth. A short reception for Judith will follow the service. We hope that you will join us for this joyous occasion!

We hope you will greet Judith and then attend the presentation by Carlotta Walls Lanier, recounting her experience as one of the Little Rock Nine Students.

The Colorado Repertory Singers, a non-profit community choir from Broomfield directed by Dr. Kyle Fleming, will present Dan Forrest’s Requiem for the Living at Trinity on Friday, March 16 at 7:30pm. This

is another opportunity to experience the traditional mass in an exciting, new contemporary musical setting. Forrest’s writing brings moments of passionate drama, haunting introspection and tender comfort to this ancient sacred text.

Choral musicians from Rock Canyon High School will be collaborating with CRS on this stirring performance in the magnificent setting of our beautiful sanctuary. You will also see some familiar faces from Trinity in the CRS choir!

The Holy Mass has been the inspiration for some of the most beautiful music ever written. Celebrated composers like Mozart, Bach, Brahms and Fauré have written Masses that are still performed to this day. In the modern era,

Leonard Bernstein, John Rutter and Dave Brubeck have composed Requiem Masses that have paired contemporary musical styles with the traditional text. More recently, composer Carol Barnett has set the traditional text to a bluegrass accompaniment.

The Chancel Choir is delighted to bring this unique and beautiful union of seemingly disparate musical traditions to Trinity on Sunday, March 18 for both worship services.

Of the work, the composer writes:

To bring the solemnity of the classical-based Mass together with the down-home sparkle of bluegrass – now there’s an assignment. My highest hope is that listeners coming from one tradition – classical or bluegrass – and perhaps dubious about the other, might discover something new and wonderful in the combination, as I have. Composing the music for “The World Beloved” has given me the chance to write cheery sacred music – all too rare in a medium rife with staid and even lugubrious settings. It’s brought me back to memories of music heard while visiting my grandparents: country music with a church flavor that told stories and came out of a scratchy old record player. Grandma would not have allowed dancing, but under the table I tapped my toes.

The choir is eager to offer this musical gift as a beautiful and meaningful part of your Lenten worship. Please be sure to join us for the pre-concert lecture in the sanctuary at 9:30am that day, which will be presented by musicologist and Trinity member Dr. Trudi Wright.

Forty-six children participated in A Christmas Pageant at Birthday for Jesus on December 10. Children could choose from the many characters in the Christmas story from animals to angels. Some had speaking parts and

others had walk-on parts. Directors Karen Schaffer, Carrie Nicholas and Trudi Wright worked with the children ages one through 5th grade during Sunday school, practicing speaking parts and memorizing the classic hymn, Away in the Manger. On December 10, they presented their play following a delicious pasta lunch prepared by the Fellowship Committee. The party ended with singing Happy Birthday and enjoying cupcakes.

Four of Trinity’s families portrayed the Holy Family for our Christmas Eve Services. Jason and BillieAnne Kennedy and baby Leland were the Holy Family for the Lessons & Carols service on December 18. On Christmas Eve, the families were Brent and Christine Case with big brother Kellen and baby Everett, Enzio and Casey Cassinis along with big sister Allie and baby twins Ashton and Benton, and Rory and Lauren Walter, along with big sister Britton and baby Beckett.

Trinity was visited by three wise men to help celebrate Epiphany on January 7. The kings dressed in beautiful costumes designed by Sunny Collins. The new costumes debuted last year and Sunny helped again this year getting the kings into costume. The kings processed in worship during the hymn We Three Kings and stayed for the Children’s message. They also visited Sunday School classes where the children were able to visit and ask questions about their journey.

During Sunday School, the children learned more about the history and meaning of the 12 Days of Christmas, Epiphany and the 3 Kings. Many thanks to Caleb Wright, Ato Hammond, Liveti Sivao, and John, Kurt and Tom Lausman for portraying the 3 wise men this year.

CARE MINISTRY \\

Care Ministry at Trinity includes ways to receive support and nurture and serve others in Christian love. These ministries are rooted in the belief that as a faith community, we are to care for one another, and that we

need one another in life’s ups and downs. In this way we practice Beloved Community.

Do you have the gift of listening and presence with others? Are you wondering how to share more compassion with a hurting world? Do you have ideas for new ways of being there for others in our community?

I welcome the opportunity to talk further with you about serving God by serving others in care and compassion. And, we all experience challenges and tough times in life, and we can find our way through with the help of God and others.

Trinity’s pastors and the Stephen Ministry team can provide a listening and caring presence as you navigate rough terrain. Ministries such as the Prayer Team, Prayer Quilts, visitation to our homebound members, and Health Ministry also provide support and nurture.

Whether you are seeking to give or receive care in 2018 (or both!), I hope that you will remember Care Ministry and not hesitate to reach out to me for further conversation. I can be reached at [email protected] or (303) 839-1493x11.

CONTEMPLATIVE SPIRITUALITY \\

Join us April 13-15, 2018 for an experiential time of learning, prayer, and chant rooted in the Celtic vision with acclaimed Scottish

teacher, Rev. Dr. John Philip Newell at the beautiful Shambhala Mountain Center in Red Feather, Colorado.

This is the third annual gathering of the Colorado School of Celtic Consciousness (SCC) to nurture a community of shared vision and spiritual practice for transformation in our lives and world. Teachings will focus on the central themes of Celtic Spirituality, the sacredness of the earth and the human soul. Practices will concentrate on sustainable contemplative disciplines for individual wellbeing and collective healing.

Our daily schedule will consist of prayer at the beginning and ending of each day, presentations by John Philip Newell, along with meditative practices, silence, and sharing. Meals will be shared in common, and there will be free time to hike and rest. Additionally, there will be a party on the last evening to celebrate our time together. The Shambhala Mountain Center is a peaceful retreat nestled between breathtaking mountain views. The event will be held in the main lodge with plenty of space indoors and outdoors for quiet reflection and conversation. Space is limited so register soon!

John Philip Newell writes in his book The Rebirthing of God: Christianity’s Struggle for New Beginnings, that the isle of Iona, like other sacred sites of pilgrimage and healing in the world, is like a living icon, “…through which we glimpse the Light that is present everywhere.”

On the first day of our Pilgrimage, John Philip led us to the north edge of Iona to a beautiful white sandy beach named “Traigh Bhan” or “White Strand of the Monks” (pictured right) and there he drew a mandala in the sand with four sections representing earth, water, air and fire. He then asked us to search for four stones that would illustrate our hopes for our nation, our community, our family and ourselves. After we had selected our stones, we formed a circle and took turns placing the stones in the mandala. Then, we took turns explaining our choice of stone and what our desires were for the future that it represented. It was one of many opportunities we would have throughout our pilgrimage to share and to be part of something very moving that brought us closer together.

Another such occasion was in St. Oran’s Chapel, located adjacent to the Iona Abbey and surrounded by a ninth-century cemetery where several Scottish Kings are buried. We gathered here every evening to meditate and sing chants. On a particular night, we ended our time of meditation by learning a Light ritual. We took turns leaning over a candle, cupping our hands to gather the light first to our eyes signifying seeing the Light in Others and then over our hearts so we might see the Light within Ourselves.

These were just two of the special moments during our Pilgrimage where we truly felt the sacredness of the isle of Iona.
