President’s Note:

What an exciting year we are going to have. At our Christmas Party we were lucky to have Carol Del Carlo,

President of the NvFRW, install our officers for 2015. CVI put on a great dinner and everyone enjoyed the eve-

ning. It is always a pleasure to have an event where we can all socialize and talk with members we don’t usually

see or who don’t sit by us at a lunch meeting.

I was amazed at the great turnout we had for our first lunch meeting January 14th. It was so nice to have so many

new guests. I was also glad to see so many returning members. Judge Perkins was a delightful guest speaker.

He was both informative and fun. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to him as did the others around me. I know our

VP of Programs, Barbara McRoberts, wants to have speakers we will all enjoy. Please let her know if there is

someone you would like to hear.

Thank you all who volunteered to fill some of the committee chair positions. Please feel free to call others to

help or to be a co-chair if you want. I would love to see everyone involved in the club. If you don’t see a posi-

tion for something you want to do call me and we will see what we can do. New ideas are always welcome.

January 17th was the leadership meeting at the Governor’s mansion in Carson City. NvFRW puts one on each

year and invites all the members of every club. Eight of us attended from SNRW and it was very informative

and included a delicious lunch. The guest speaker was Victor Joecks, from the NPRI and he discussed the 2015

Legislative Session along with the Governor’s budget ideas. What an eye opener! It was wonderful to meet with

the ladies from the other Northern Nevada clubs. The focus was on leadership and how to be advocates for the

causes you are passionate about.

Next month, our own commissioner, Barry Penzel, will we be the speaker. He will tell us about what is happen-

ing in our area. I hope you will all be able to join us for good food and good company. We are also trying to fix

the sound problem so everyone can hear better. Please make your reservations by calling Linda Davis at 265-

SNRW MINUTES

January 14, 2015

The meeting of the SNRW was called to order by President Pat Smith at 12:00 noon. President Pat gave the invocation and Dave Brady led us in the Salute to the Flag.

Special guests were introduced. The new board was also introduced. The 2014 board was recognized and our Past-Past President, Nancy Jarvis was given a gift.

1st VP of program, Barbara McRoberts, introduced our speaker, Judge Thomas Perkins. He gave us a very enter-taining view of his courtroom experiences and that the rule of law must prevail.

The minutes of the November meeting were approved. Jan Muzzy gave the treasurer’s report.

2nd VP of membership, Nancy Brisack, reported that we have between 75 – 80 members.

The sustainability drawing was won by Alice Morgan, $52.00.

Sally Wiley reported that boxes are again being put together for the troops and will be mailed January 29th.

St. Patrick’s dinner is fast approaching and our chair, Joyce Richardson, needs a lot of help. She needs members to get raffle items, cook roasts, set up the room, and clean up afterwards. All volunteers will be appreciated.

Mary Porter reported that the DCRCC will have their annual Lincoln-Reagan dinner at

5:00 pm on February 15th at the CVI. The cost is $40.00 for singles and $75.00 for couples.

The NVFRW will hold their annual Leadership meeting on January 17th from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm.

There being no further business the meeting was adjourned at 12:55 pm.

Dinner “Pot ‘o Gold” choice drawings and/or auction. Please consider

donating something special for this fun event. As you know, this is our

only fund raiser in the year and all proceeds are designated to support

The Constitution Committee

President pro tem Nancy wears and has worn many hats. Recently she put on her reading cap and found time to make a recommendation that the Constitution Committee is passing along. Nancy thought you might want to take a look at Things That Matter: Three Decades of Passions, Pastimes and Politics, by Charles Krauthammer, 2013, Crown Forum. If you have read any of his editorial pieces you already know that he is a superb writer. If you have listened to the Fox News Chan-nel you have been impressed by Charles Krauthammer’s commentary—frank, savvy and witty. Things That Matter contains a number of Charles Krauthammer’s award-winning essays. A variety of personal, political and his-torical topics are addressed as he takes the reader through the last three decades. Amazon’s customer reviewers gave 3,558 five-star reviews compared with 52 one-star reviews. One five-star reviewer shares that liberals may not enjoy the book as much as the review had.

Peter Wehner reviewed the book for “Commentary” magazine. He noted: “We should care about politics because political acts can have profound human consequences. It

makes a very great difference whether people live in freedom or servitude; whether government promotes a culture of life or a culture of death; whether the state is a guardian or an enemy of human dignity.

. . . There are plenty of people who bring dishonor to the enterprise. But at the risk of sounding out of touch with our times, there is something ennobling about politics, at least when done properly. We cannot ne-glect the importance of our laws or the political philosophies in which we root our laws because we cannot ne-glect their influence on our lives. Such are the duties of citizenship in a free society.

That is, I think, what Charles Krauthammer is saying; and why what he is saying matters so very much.”

Barry is a retired Colonel, US Army with 25 years of service as a Ranger, Aviator,

and Combat Leader. He has lived in Douglas County since 1992 and has owned and

operated businesses in Douglas County since 1993. He has served in many civic

organizations including the Greater Genoa Business Association, the Carson Valley

Renewable Energy Committee, and the Carson Valley Chamber of Commerce.

Currently he is on the board of the Suicide Prevention �etwork of Douglas County,

a volunteer. He has retired from a successful business in the geothermal industry

and continues his commitment to public service in our community as a Douglas

County Commissioner. His current term will expire in 2016. He is the founder of

WAVE (Welcome All Veterans Everywhere)

Greetings Fellow Republicans,

On Sunday, February 15, 2015, the Douglas County Republican Central Committee will again host the annual Lincoln-Reagan Dinner and fundraiser. We are always excited to acknowledge and honor two of America’s finest presidents. These men set the clear benchmark for anyone aspiring to the highest office in the land. We are proud that our voters helped deliver significant victories for so many of our Republican candidates. The conservative message rang loud and clear. We now prepare for the 2015 Nevada Legislative session and, as the year progresses, we begin looking ahead to-wards the 2016 presidential election. The work of the DCRCC continues unabated. Our dinner will be held at the Carson Valley Inn, located at 1627 US Hwy 395 N, Minden. The event begins with a no-host cocktail reception at 5:00 pm. Din-ner will be served at 6:00 pm. There will be a raffle and auction with some great items in play. Tickets are $40 per person or $75 per couple.

This is an opportunity to meet and speak with a number of elected officers and fellow Republicans. Lincoln-Reagan Day events are a longstanding tradition throughout our state and Nevada’s elected Republican officials make every effort to

attend as many possible. As officials confirm attendance we will share that information via our website at douglas-

gop.org.
