THE WOMAN WHO LOVES GIRAFFESDOCUMENTARY • 1H 23MDirected by Alison Reid | Cast: Fred Bercovitch, Lisa Clifton-Bumpass, Anne Innis Dagg, Mary Dagg In 1956, four years before Jane Goodall ventured into the world of chimpanzees and seven years before Dian Fossey left to work with mountain gorillas, 23-year-old biologist Anne Innis Dagg made an unprecedented solo journey to South Africa to study giraffes in the wild. In The Woman Who Loves Giraffes Anne (now 86) retraces her steps, and with letters and stunning, original 16mm film footage offers an intimate window into her life as a young woman, juxtaposed with a first-hand look at the devastating reality that giraffes are facing today. Both the world’s first ‘giraffologist’, whose research findings ultimately became the foundation for many scientists following in her footsteps, and the species she loves have each experienced triumphs as well as setbacks. The Woman Who Loves Giraffes gives us a moving perspective on both.

EL LOBO Y LA PALOMA, THE FILM1H 30M • NRDirected by David Camlin and Scott Sutherland The original, live performance of El Lobo y La Paloma was created by flamenco dancer Lindsey Bourassa in artistic collaboration with dancer Megan Keogh, Canadian-Iranian painter Khosro Berahmandi, Kuwaiti singer Talal Alzefiri, and oud player Thomas Kovacevic. This live performance was documented in 2018 and then recreated on film in 2019 by Maine filmmakers David Camlin and Scott Sutherland.

The work integrates the symbolism of the wolf (el lobo) and the dove (la paloma) as understood through cross-cultural understandings of animal symbolism. Wolves are regarded as spirit teachers and pathfinders, those who face their death with dignity and go into the un-known to gather knowledge to then guide their pack. The dove is a symbol of the maternal spirit messenger who comes to lead her children safely from struggle and to guide their spirit onward. In El Lobo y La Paloma, the wolf embodies any departed, displaced being; the dove represents reunited ancestry and she who guides the sufferer out of suffering; the griever grieves in order to heal; the music guides our healing. Inspired by the loss of Bourassa’s father in 2015, El Lobo y La Paloma strives to honor the universal experience of loss, to highlight the reconstruction of our relationship with our lost one through the grieving process, and to foster a conversation about the importance of grief as vital to healing.

The film will be followed by a brief presentation by grief and bereavement educator Carol Schoneberg of Hospice of Southern Maine, as well as a Q&A with filmmakers and performers.

MUSIC

SONGWRITERS ON STAGEEach month, the Maine Songwriters’ Association presents Songwriters on Stage, a showcase of some of the best songwriters Maine has to offer. It’s an opportunity for listeners to discover new music or come hear local favorites in one of the best listening rooms in Maine. This installment will feature Ben Hunsberger, Robby Simpson, Emilia Dahlin, and Emerging Artist Sarah Dawn.

MUSIC

SAMUEL JAMESWith a voice of grit and gravel, roots musician Samuel James sings with an authenticity lost in time. A modern guitar master, James’ skill has a depth and range that seems impossible for a man with only two hands. An award-winning songwriter, one of the world’s most innovative guitar players, and a Moth-featured storyteller, James brings all of this to his amazing stage show. A live performance by Samuel James is part theatre concert, part stomping-on-the-porch dance party and part stand-up comedy.

LIVE IN THE LOUNGEJoin us most Wednesday nights at 7:30 for live music in our lounge. We invite you to come in, grab a drink from the bar, and enjoy yourself.
