Lenten Reminders When you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, so that you may not appear to be fasting, except to your Father who is hidden.

And your Father who sees what is hidden will repay you. Mt. 6:18

Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fast and abstinence. Fridays during Lent are days of abstinence.

What does it mean to fast? According to Canon Law, the law of fasting allows only one full meal or two small meals a day.

What does it mean to abstain from meat? According to Canon Law, the law of abstinence forbids the use of meat. Roman Catholics who are 14 years of age and older are bound to abstain from meat. Disabled or feeble, pregnant women and nursing mothers are exempt.

Why should we fast? The ear liest and most often cited purpose of fasting is penance, that is, atonement for sin. Through fasting we humble ourselves before God – setting aside that which sustains us and gives us pleasure – and turn ourselves toward our merciful Lord.

MASS & ANOINTING OF THE SICK Saturday, February 11, 2017 ~ 12:30 pm

Do you know someone who is facing surgery, or an elderly person or child who is sick? Bring them to the Cathedral to receive the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. Through anointing, the grace of the Holy Spirit comforts and strengthens the soul of the sick person. The Mass & Anointing of the Sick is co-hosted by the Cathedral and the Western Association of the Order of Malta in observance of the 2017 World Day of the Sick and the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes. The Mass is open to everyone, and you do not need to be sick to attend. Many healthy people find it fulfilling to pray alongside the sick. For more information, please contact: Chuck Huebner at [email protected] or James Low at [email protected].

DID YOU KNOW?

Speak up with concerns about a child’s environment

Parent and caregiver observations can help protect a child in danger, and you should know when it’s important to speak up. Although it may be awkward to approach a parent you do not know, if you have witnessed a scenario where the child is in danger of physical or mental abuse, it is your responsibility to act in that child’s best interest. In addition to reporting concerns, think about any practical solutions that can help keep kids safe pending an investigation and solution. For a copy of the VIRTUS© article “Voicing Concerns About a Child’s Environment,” email [email protected] or call (213) 637-7227.

TOGETHER IN MISSION CAMPAIGN LAUNCH Announcement Sunday: February 5th Commitment Sunday: February 19th

God calls upon each one of us to share our gifts with our brothers and sisters that are in need. Through Together in Mission we can give healing and faith to the communities that simply would not be here without your support. Though our Church is large, our strength lies not in our numbers but in our compassion and ability to respond to the call for help. Every gift, regardless of the size, matters so long as we give what we can and answer the calling of our faith. For those of you that have already committed to a gift, we thank you. For those of you that have yet to make a gift this year, we hope you will participate in this vital appeal. God bless you for your generosity.
