February 9, 2020 9:30 AM | Great Hall
MESSAGE “Beloved and Free”
Matthew 5:38-42 (NRSV) Rev. Lois Annich

ANNOUNCEMENTS “Valentine Hearts for Haiti” – Be sure to pick up your pre-ordered cookies in the COTS Café today. There will be a limited quantity available for walk-up sales. Senior Connections: If you are a senior citizen (and we’ll let you define that as you see fit) you are cordially invited to lunch at noon on Friday, February 14 in the Great Hall. Reservations are required by February 10. Contact the church office at 216-321-8880. We look forward to seeing you there! Collinwood based, award-winning photographer Stephen Bivens will curate an installation in the Parlor based on themes that arise from Austin Channing Brown’s book I’m Still Here. The show will be displayed from February 15 – March 1. Join us on Sunday, February 16 at 3 p.m. in the Great Hall to experience worship in the tradition of the African American Church, including the COTS Gospel Choir and groups from churches around the greater Cleveland area. United Methodist Women Program: On Tuesday, February 11 at 10 a.m. in the Parlor, Kerry Norman will present a program called “Days for Girls.” This global movement prepares and distributes menstrual health solutions to girls who would otherwise miss school during their monthly periods. Kerry will provide background information and examples of cutting and sewing fabric for our “Hands On” workday on March 10 in Calvary Hall. Have you heard of Boomerang Bags? We will also be introduced to this international organization and how timely it is for the 2020 ban on one-time use plastic bags. Please RSVP to the church office for lunch ($5). NEW Thursday Night Fellowship Dinner (6:15 - 6:45 p.m. in Calvary Hall). Join your fellow COTS members and friends for a Community Dinner on Thursdays. Delicious catered food will be available for a $5 at-will/able offering. Fellowship and fun await, so we
hope to see you on Thursday, Feb. 6! Contact Laura Moseley at [email protected] for information on how to donate and to RSVP.
SMALL GROUP STUDIES "Life of the Beloved: Spiritual Living in a Secular World" by Henri Nouwen will be the all-church Lenten study book. Beginning February 26, Sunday School classes and Bible study groups are encouraged to study this book. Discussion questions will be provided. Pastor Amanda Moseng will lead two studies on this book - beginning March 4 on Wednesday mornings at 10 a.m. and during Thursday Women's Bible Study at 5:30 p.m. Books can be purchased in the Parlor this morning for $5. Please contact Pastor Amanda at [email protected] or Dyann Whaley at [email protected] with questions. Please join Rev. Gregory Kendrick and Rev. Lois Annich in Room 100 on Thursdays, February 27 - April 2 from 6:45-8:15 p.m. for conversations based on Austin Channing Brown’s book, “I’m Still Here: Black Dignity in a World Made for Whiteness.” Deepening our awareness of the impact of racism on our common life and learning new ways of interacting with one another is part of our commitment “to act justly, love mercy and walk humbly with our God.” The first meeting will be an introduction to the themes in the book, so people need not have read it. We will have books to distribute at that session for $17 each. Sign up at the Group Life table in the Parlor after services or RSVP through the church office. All are invited to join Pastor Amanda Moseng for a deeper study of the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7) on Wednesdays at 10 a.m. through February 26 in room 100. The only materials needed are your Bible and a heart that seeks to know God’s word.
Ash Wednesday services will be held on February 26 at noon in the Chapel and 7 p.m. in the Sanctuary. This worship experience that marks the beginning of the Christian season of Lent is a time to explore the fragility of life, the inevitability of death, and our constant need of God's grace. We will receive ashes in the shape of a cross on our foreheads or hands and celebrate Holy Communion.
Please join us in the Parlor after worship for a time of fellowship and refreshments, hosted by Group Life Ministries.
