GOOD FOOD BOX UPDATE

Hi Everyone,

The last Good Food Box day was a great success, we had 6 new participants, and It was great to have the

help of Andrea Walkus and Colleen George. With their help we are able to expand the program to allow

more people to join, so if you haven't tried it yet, you can sign up at the Band Office front desk. It cost $10,

and if you're on SA you can sign a form requesting your SA to be deducted for each GFB.

In the last Yo! News there was a calendar with the Good Food Box pickup and payment dates. We

changed the Feb 14th Good Food Box Pickup date to Wednesday Feb 12th because we thought the 17th

was Family Day, and many families go down island for the long weekend. We found out that Family day

is on Feb 10th in BC ( it's on the 17th in the rest of Canada), so the date has been changed back to the

original date of Friday, Feb 14th (see the attached calendar). If you have any questions please contact

me.

I also mentioned in the last newsletter that we would be starting healthy cooking classes. The first class

will be at 1pm on Friday, Feb 14th: Good Food Box pickup day, at the Elders Building. The class will be

facilitated by myself, Andrea Walkus and Kim Black, VIHA First Nations Health Dietician. Afterwards

we'll share a meal together.

You can sign up for the cooking class at the Band Office front desk. You can come to the cooking class

even if you're not signed up for the Good Food Box program. The aim of the cooking class is to give you

tips and tricks for cooking healthier meals for your family. Participants will also get to take home a

healthy recipe.

As usual, if you have any questions or concerns about the GFB program, please contact me, and/or like

the Gwa'sala-'Nakwaxda'xw Good Food Box Facebook page and send me a message.

Thank you,

Lucy Hemphill,

Food Security & Nutrition Coordinator

Elders update

Yo Wiksas

I hope everyone is doing well. The Elder's Program has been keeping busy. I am quite pleased

with the turn outs we have eben having at our weekly Elder's Day Program. We have guest

speakers like: Matt, Andrea, Chelsey & Lucy Hemphill.

Matt is the Home & Community Care Nurse. He comes in at 11am every Monday to present

the Elder's with very helpful & useful information. It's very neat how much you can learn from

him when he comes in. You can also think of health related topics you would like to know more

about & he will definitely look into it more for you.

Lucy Hemphill is our Food Security & Nutrition Coordinator. Lucy helps me prepare a healthy

meal for the Elder's at lunch. I have learned a lot from her. She also gives the Elder's updates on

the Community Garden & the pavilion that will be built & asks for guidance and input from the

Elders first before she proceeds with any decisions. Lucy has a number of Elder's Involved in

the Good Food Box Program. I do hope more of you will sign up.

Andrea is our Diabetic Outreach worker/CHR. She comes in at 1pm Mondays. She does a

fitness session with the Elder's where they get up & move around. She taught them a bit of Tai

Chi moves last week. Good Job Andrea! The Elder's also have been using the treadmills &

bikes now that they are set up to do so. Any of the Elder's are welcome to come and work out

any time during office hours. I can show you how to use the machines as well & can even work

out with you if you'd like.

Chelsey is our new Community Health Representative. She has been coming down every

Monday since she has started. Thus far she has done a health survey with the Elder's & gave

them each hand outs about food & nutrition.

Walter & Tommy have been coming in as well to sing a few songs for the Elder's enjoyment.

I am so happy with all the partnerships that have been made over a short period of time that I

have been back. Great teamwork everyone. Thank you to all of you for your hard work &

efforts at making Elder's Day a success! I could not do it with out you!

We will continue with walking club every Tuesdays @ 2pm meet at the Elder's Center. Baking

& cooking classes will resume to only once a month.

The Elder's have a catering job on Feb 20th & 28th. Please see me for more details and about

lending a hand.

Gilakasla

Silena George, Elder's Coordinator

Report from Hitlamas, of the Treaty Negotiation Team

I am writing in the Yo News to help to inform the community about work I am doing on your behalf in our

territories.

For almost 12 years I have been sitting with the Treaty team to negotiate a treaty that will meet the

needs and visions of our people and that will respect the wishes of our ancestors.

It has often been difficult for me to listen to what the governments say. They do not understand our ways

and how we treat and respect our lands. A lot of the reason is because there has been such a steady

turnover of government negotiators though out the years. One will just begin to understand our ways

when they are moved to another job. That is the way government bureaucracy operates I suppose.

With work in the area of treaty we have an opportunity to do things different, to respect and involve our

own systems of government including our Hereditary leaders. We have an opportunity to manage our

lands and resources. And we have a chance to move back and live in our homelands.

As a starting point we are looking at two areas in our territories – winter villages of the Gwa’sala and the

‘Nakwaxda’xw as well as do a study of the lands surrounding those villages. The study will look at all the

values of the lands – sites to: live, protect as sacred, gather food and sites where there are trees that could

be used to help us rebuild in the way we want to.

A very important topic that must be considered is “Protocol”. All Companies, and Band Council Staff who

are currently involved with activities such as logging, fisheries and ecotourism in our homelands, must

involve the hereditary leaders and rightful owners of the lands. They must meet with the hereditary

leaders, elders and families to inform and insure a full understanding and support of activities they are

pursuing.

I feel that it is very important that we begin to look at our own governance structures, the systems that

determine how we live our daily lives as a Gwa’sala-‘Nakwaxda’xw Peoples. Protocol must be central to all

that we do.

Until next time ,

Gila-‘kasla Lilkwala cle
