Getting Our Affairs in Order

What we would do if we thought the end of our life near? One of my favorite movies in recent years is “Gran Torino”. Now, there were elements in this movie that many would find offensive: vulgar language, racial slurs, and the violence; but over all, I thought it was a good story.

I do want give too much of the movie away for those who have not seen it, but the thought of the end being near crossed Clint Eastwood’s character’s mind. What he did do? He bought a new tailored suit, got a haircut, made sure his will was up to date, made sure his dog was looked after, and finally, after months of his priest telling him that it was his wife’s dying wish that he would go to confession, he went. In other words, the Eastwood character quickly prepared himself and got his affairs in order, focusing on the things that mattered to him the most. And even though he was not the greatest Catholic in the world, faith accounted for something in getting his affairs in order, that if he were to die, it would be in the state of grace.

In that sense, it seems to that if we thought that we were facing the end with an amount of certainty, that we would probably act similar to the way the Eastwood character acted. I do not think we would be busy about trying to get as many items as possible crossed off our “bucket list.” If we truly are good responsible stewards, we would make sure that both our temporal affairs and our spiritual affairs in order. But even there, there is a priority of which affairs were most important.

In 2003, my appendix ruptured. Being rushed to the hospital and eventually into surgery, my concern was not on how my money from my IRA would be spent or who was going get all my valued treasures, my priority was see that my soul was prepared before I went into surgery. A priest from the seminary came by, heard my confession and anointed me. He said he would call my family. There was great comfort in receiving those sacraments that no matter what happened, I would be fine either way.

In today’s Gospel, we hear about Peter’s mother-in-law sick in bed. She may have even thought that the end was near. Part of getting her affairs may have been Peter bringing Jesus to her. Jesus took her hand and helped her up. She was healed.

She immediately began to wait on him, to be of service to him. Peter’s mother-in-law is a model for us today.

There are just times in our life when things may seem bleak and hopeless. We may feel like Job in the first reading. We may feel from time to time that life is a drudgery; that we shall not see happiness again. And even though the end may not be near, those are the times when we are tempted to throw in the towel. But something happens where things look better. Somewhere along the line we get touched by grace, touched by the healing power of Jesus Christ. That healing grace may have happened in the sacrament of reconciliation or in the sacrament of the anointing or in receiving the Eucharist. That healing grace may have took the form of a revelation when there in a bit more clarity to things. That healing grace

(continued from page 2) may have taken the form of someone showing us kindness and support. In all those occasions, Christ is there; Christ is taking us by the hand and helping us up. If we truly believe that, how can we not wait on him; how can we not serve him; how can we not be his disciples?

Whether or not the end is near, we are always called to have our affairs in order. We are always called to come to Christ and have him take us by the hand, and help us up. We are called to always be of service, to a disciple, to be a good steward of all the graces that we have received in this lifetime. Jesus himself models to us what that looks like.

Later in our gospel reading, we hear that the first thing that Jesus did afterward was finding a deserted place and prayed. Then he went about his mission. If we are truly called to service, to be a disciple, to be a good steward, it all starts with prayer. Prayer centers ourselves to listen and to discern how we are to go about our mission; how we are to preach the Gospel through words and actions; how we bring the healing presence of Jesus Christ to others.

Do we have our affairs in order? Let us pray that our celebration of the Eucharist help us up and to truly realize that our discipleship in Jesus Christ puts our affairs in order.—TB

Fish Fry Fridays will start on February 16th. This is your chance to something POSITIVE for Lent. Sign up sheets are posted in the back of the church. 1.Consider forming a team and committing to 3 Fridays in Lent. 2.4 teams are needed each Friday and each team testifies to having a good time working together. Lots of help is needed each Friday night during the actual meal service. Please sign up and come when you can. Homemade desserts are a big hit! Last year we served over 300 guests each Friday night (grand total 1876 meals), so lots of desserts are needed. See the sign up sheet for desserts. Please sign up and join in the fun of serving others for lent. Thank you Kathleen

The 2018 Catholic Services Appeal, conducted by the Catholic Services Appeal Foundation, will begin and I am asking you for your support. The Catholic Services Appeal is the way in which the Collective Ministries in this Archdiocese are funded.

Your gift to the Catholic Services Appeal Foundation is restricted for the benefit of the 18 Collective Ministries within our Archdiocese. Some of these ministries include helping the homeless, the hungry, the imprisoned, students in financial need, seminarians, and many others. These Designated Ministries cannot be funded on their own or by any one single parish but rather need support from all of us.

I wholeheartedly support this Appeal and I will be making my personal pledge to it. I am calling on you to join me in doing your part so that these important ministries in this Archdiocese can be fully funded. Please be assured of my gratitude for your participation in the Catholic Services Appeal as well as a remembrance in my daily prayers.
