Breakfast: Come one! Come All! February 4th is our First Sunday Breakfast! Bring a favorite to share and enjoy visiting with our Transfiguration community. Hope to see you there! PROCESS FOR REQUESTING MASS INTENTIONS Masses may be offered for living or deceased; healing of the sick; in honor or in memory of special occasions such as birthdays or anniversaries; Mass of Thanksgiving; special intentions which may be specified or not. Masses at Transfiguration are Sat, Sun, Mon, Thu, Fri. The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass is a wonderful way to remember our loved ones and pray for special intentions. If you wish to have a Mass offered for a specific intention, the following process should be followed.

1. Contact Geri Cullen either by phone or email to arrange for the Mass. Geri will give you available dates and get your request on the calendar. 2. Mass cards are provided for you to send to the individual or family of the individual for whom the Mass is being offered. 3. The usual offering for a Mass intention is $10.00. Offerings may be cash or check made out to Transfiguration of Jesus Catholic Church. You may give your offering to Geri and she will see that it gets in the collection and labeled Mass Intentions. Alternately you may place your offering directly in the collection basket. If you place in the collection basket be sure to label Mass Intentions and indicate that Mass is on the calendar. This information will be helpful to the counters, so they know the Mass has been scheduled and further follow up is not necessary. 4. Each week the Mass Intentions are in the bulletin stating the individual for whom the Mass is being offered and who requested it. 5. Father announces the intention of the Mass and it is also included in Prayer of the Faithful. To schedule a Mass intention, or if any questions contact Geri Cullen either by phone or email. (910-285-7334) or [email protected] Gospel Show. Rose Hill High School will be the place to be on Saturday, February 24, 2018 for a night of entertainment and inspiration for the soul, hosted by L.D. Fillyaw at 6:00 pm. Proceeds will go to promoting education, literacy and arts in the community. Tickets: $10.00 in advance, $15.00 at the door.

We have rescheduled our meeting for Monday evening, February 12th at 5:30 PM in the church hall. We will discuss the CD The Incredible Mind of G.K. Chesterton and Deacon Mike will be leading the discussion. Dale Aniquist, founder of the American Chesterton Society, presents how this “King of Satire” predicted many of the societal ills of our day and pointed out the remedies for them. It is a must-listen-to CD so please pick up your copy in the kiosk if you haven’t already done so. Please congratulate John Dean in joining the local Knights of Columbus. John is a

long time alter server here at Transfiguration. He also continues to work serving families in need at the Burgaw Food Pantry. This past week the Knights delivered checks to the teachers in Duplin County totaling 10,400 dollars as proceeds from the Bill Lord Tournament. This money will be used for defined items to help intellectually challenged students. Another 1700 dollars went to the Special Olympics of North Carolina. Thank you to the many parishioners who supported our efforts. Fast & Abstinence Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of fasting and abstinence for Catholics. In addition, Fridays during Lent are obligatory days of abstinence. For members of the Latin Catholic Church, the norms on fasting are obligatory from age 18 until age 59. When fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full meal, as well as two smaller meals that together are not equal to a full meal. The norms concerning abstinence from meat are binding upon members of the Latin Catholic Church from age 14 onwards. Members of the Eastern Catholic Churches are to observe the particular law of their own sui iuris Church. If possible, the fast on Good Friday is continued until the Easter Vigil (on Holy Saturday night) as the "paschal fast" to honor the suffering and death of the Lord Jesus, and to prepare ourselves to share more fully and to celebrate more readily his Resurrection. Christian tradition can name at least seven reasons for fasting: 1. From the beginning, God commanded some fasting, and sin entered into the world because Adam and Eve broke the fast. 2. For the Christian, fasting is ultimately about fasting from sin. 3. Fasting reveals our dependence on God and not the resources of this world. 4. Fasting is an ancient way of preparing for the Eucharist—the truest of foods. 5. Fasting is preparation for baptism (and all the sacraments)—for the reception of grace. 6. Fasting is a means of saving resources to give to the poor. 7. Fasting is a means of self-discipline, chastity, and the restraining of the appetites.
