Today’s scripture contains a warning for us to make the best use of the time that we have on earth. We have all witnessed how some lives end far sooner than anyone expected. We have to remember that the quantity of years is not important; the quality of those years is what really matters. What is the quality of our years? How do we make the best use of the time that God has given us? We are each a fig tree planted by the Lord to bear His fruit. He gardens us; He nurtures us; He cares for us with Word, Sacraments, and the Grace to seek His Presence in others. But we must produce. We are living on God’s time, not our time. How well are we using this time? That is the challenge of today’s Gospel reading.

During Lent we are given the opportunity, with the Universal Church, to develop a qualitative relationship with Our Lord. Together in Lent, we are asked to surrender ourselves to ancient spiritual practices: Prayer, Fasting and Alms Giving.

Prayer opens oneself to speaking to God and listening to what God is saying to us. Fasting for certain periods of time, fasting from certain foods, things and activities are all valid penitential practices. The giving of alms is some effort to share this world equally with those who have not—this is achieved with one’s distribution of food, money and tangible things, but also in the sharing of our time and talents.

The key to fruitful observance of these practices is to recognize their link to baptismal renewal. We are called not just to abstain from sin during Lent, but to true conversion of our hearts and minds as followers of Christ. We recall those waters in which we were baptized into Christ's death, died to sin and evil, and began new life in Christ.

- Fr. Joe

LITURGICAL INSIGHTS

The Deacon and the Homily

Last week, the Liturgical Insights focused on the deacon’s role as bearer of the Word of God. Indeed, the deacon, when ordained, is authorized to proclaim the Gospel and to bear the Word of God.

Closely tied to the proclamation of the Gospel is the homily, which may be rightly understood as a continuation of the proclamation of the Gospel. Therein, the ordained man expounds the mysteries of our salvation, closely connected with the revealed Word in Sacred Scripture. In fact, that is the difference between a homily and a sermon: a sermon focuses on a spiritual theme; the homily focuses on the Scriptures that have just been proclaimed at Mass.

The homily is, therefore, an integral element of the Mass, a necessary one even, since through it, the ordained man reveals the relevance, relationality, and realistic elements of the Scripture as it applies to us today. So essential is the homily to the Mass that our recent popes have underscored its importance in their apostolic exhortations.

Pope Benedict XVI in Sacramentum Caritatis, writes that the homily “closely relates the proclamation of the word of God to the sacramental celebration and the life of the community, so that the word of God truly becomes the Church’s vital nourishment and support (46)” and Pope Francis notes in Evangelii Gaudium that the homily “has special importance due to its Eucharistic context: it surpasses all forms of catechesis as the supreme moment in the dialogue between God and His People which lead up to

sacramental Communion (137).”

Consequently, the homily sets the stage for the Liturgy of the Eucharist by revealing how God continues to speak dynamically to His People through Sacred Scripture. And this responsibility is entrusted to the ordained man: deacon, priest and bishop.

Our three deacons at St. John’s exercise this ordained privilege by regularly giving a homily. It is one of many roles, to be continued next week, that the deacon fulfills as an ordained man in the Catholic Church.

“ROOTED IN FAITH; GROWING DISCIPLES.”

YOUTH MINISTRYYouth Ministry Meets 1st & 3rd Sunday

6:30pm-9:00pm in the John Bosco Conference Room (Hall)

Plan Now

Now in its seventh year and better than ever. Plan today to join us on March 19, 2016 for the CYM Pilgrimage. We hope to gather one thousand youth, young adults, and families this year as we walk the city streets of Wilmington with Bishop Malooly, carrying the Pilgrimage Cross from parish to parish. Plans include opening prayer, entertainment by the incredible Catholic musician, Noelle Garcia, the chance to celebrate Reconciliation, to kneel before the Blessed Sacrament, experience the Stations of the Cross, and stop by St. Francis Hospital for a special blessing of the patients.

Welcome back. There has been a lot happening these last few weeks so please give a prayerful moment to consider the following:

March 15 is our last day of Religious Education classes for this year. Our Sunday School will return for two weeks after Easter as they began later in the school year. The Sunday School program will conclude on April 10.

Reregistration and new family registration forms will be available via the Religious Education website in early March. More information for the coming year is available through the RE website by clicking on the Registration Information tab.

Our Vacation Bible School is gearing up for another wonderful faith-filled week. We are hosting 4 years olds and students entering Kindergarten through 5th grade the week of June 20-24 from 9am till 12pm for a Cave Quest adventure. Registration forms are available via the link on the RE website. The cost is $50/child. We are also seeking high school age youth to help in leading and providing great energy for this program. We will provide documentation to satisfy high school service requirements. Interested high school students are asked to email Mrs. Ballintyn at [email protected] for more information.

Youth Ministry Schedule Change

Youth Ministry is changing from weekly meetings to the 1st and 3rd Sunday of each month.

We are in need of volunteers and leaders for our youth programming. If you or someone you know has interest, call Greg Boulden at 302-999-0211. We are looking to build an evening with the talents of our parishioners for our youth. I look forward to working with you to achieve this goal!

SCHOOL NEWS Follow St. John the Beloved School on the web:www.saintjohnthebelovedschool.org

FOR THE SAKE OF GOD’S CHILDREN BACKGROUND CLEARANCES AND VOLUNTEER COVENANTS

For Background Clearances: all adults (18 and over) who are engaged with young people and volunteer for School activities ( 5 hours or more per year) must have a Hyden Background Screening performed prior to participating or helping in these activities. These activities include: chaperones for field trips; lunch duty volunteers; computer, library, nurse’s room, lunch preparation, field day, Scouts, coaching sports and any other job where you will be working with children. Beginning in August, 2015 there is an on-line application process for obtaining a criminal background clearance. This background application will require an “entry code”. If you need to apply for a Background Clearance or you need to renew your clearance, please make a check payable for $30.00 to St. John the Beloved School and send to the attention of Marie Malatesta, Compliance Coordinator. Please include an e-mail address with your check. Upon receipt of $30.00 an entry code will be issued to you and you can submit your screening application on-line. Once the investigation is completed a copy of the report will be sent to the Coordinator of Safe Environments and a copy will be sent to you for your personal record. The Coordinator of Safe Environments will issue clearance certificates and send to the schools and parishes. Background checks are good for five (5) years from the date of clearance. Please do not forward a copy to the School or Mrs. Malatesta. You will be notified at least two months in advance when your background check will expire. In addition, a Volunteer Covenant must be signed each year if you plan to participate in the above mentioned activities. If you need additional information please contact Marie Malatesta (Parish Compliance Coordinator) at 998-5525 ext. 210.

Mrs. Hart’s Middle School students are getting into the spirit of the primary campaigns by running their own. Following are the directives for this project:

Join either the Democratic or Republican presidential campaign. Discuss as a team who will be the president to manage your campaign. Choose the primary presidential candidates.

Candidates deliver a 3-5 minute opening speech about why she/he is the best choice for America. Speech must be factually correct and must be delivered effectively. Candidates must then debate the following issues: the economy, national security, health care, the environment and energy, gun control, illegal immigration. A Research Committee must divide the speeches among themselves and research the information needed for a specific candidate. Speech writers then must write emotionally charged, factually correct, highly interesting speeches. The writers’ job is to get the candidate elected. An Advertising Committee must work with the campaign president to create a campaign slogan. This slogan is to be used on signs, buttons, and bumper stickers to identify your candidate. A song must also be chosen and a 30 second to one minute commercial produced for the campaign.

Sounds interesting. But like the real primaries, a winner has not yet been determined!

LEISURE GROUP

After the 11am Mass on Tuesday, March 8th, Leisure Group will meet in the hall for our St. Patrick's luncheon.

Bring a friend and wear your green. All seniors are welcome.

Meet the RCIA Candidate Nicholas Giustiniano

I live at home with my Mom. Currently I am a full-time student at Wilmington University. My major is Game Design and Development. The program is giving me an understanding of the workflow involved in design techniques and developing a game or training simulation. My ultimate goal is to be able to communicate and market what I design to programmers and designers in the industry.

What influenced me to take the step to RCIA is my Mom. She asked me if I wanted to do it with her and I thought that would be pretty cool. So far, I think the RCIA is a good experience, as nobody judges anyone. As far as how my experience of participating in Mass is, I have only been to church a few times due to my mom's variable work schedule. However, the RCIA is helping me understand the readings at Mass a bit better.

VOCATIONS God called Moses from the burning bush. Is His voice burning within your heart? Is He calling you to live out your Catholicism as a priest, deacon, religious sister or religious brother? If you’ve felt that holy fire and aren’t sure what to do next, call or write Father Norman Carroll, Diocesan Director of Priestly and Religious Vocations (302-573-3113, [email protected]).
