The “Men of St. James” come together for prayer and discussion to make what the Pope is calling for a reality here at St. James Church. We meet on the 2nd and 4th Saturday’s at 7:00AM in the Carriage House. Come. “Open the door.” They called the church together and reported what God had done with them and how he had opened the door of faith..." (Acts 14:27)

Readings for the Third Sunday of Lent First Reading: Exodus 3:1-8a, 13-15 Moses came upon a burning bush, when God called out to him. God told Moses that he had seen the suffering of his people in Egypt, and intended to lead them from their captors to a land of milk and honey. Moses asked what he should say if the Israelites should ask what God wished to be called. God replied, "I am who am." Second Reading: I Corinthians 10:1-6, 10-12 Paul describes how the people were led into the desert by Moses, yet many of them were struck down by God. He warns that this should serve as an example not to give in to wicked desires or we may suffer the same downfall.

ST. SEBASTIAN’S TERRACE AND COLUMBARIUM

182 purchased - 270 Niches still available

Our Terrace and Columbarium are open. We have already celebrated Mass at the new Altar and have 89 niches engraved and interred. The price of a niche is $2,500, which gives you the right to inter the cremains of two people. If you have been thinking of purchasing a niche, and would like to schedule an appointment, please contact Mrs. Maureen Larkin at 845-225-2079 on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday. For those of you not familiar with a Columbarium, it is a Latin word that describes a collection of niches to house urns containing cremated human remains. Usually inscribed with the person’s name and dates of birth and death, columbaria are constructed to serve as permanent resting places for our loved ones in a ‘churchyard’ or landscaped terrace. May the Lord who has blessed this project now be a final resting place for many of our loved ones.

GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY OF THE DEDICATION OF

ST. JAMES THE APOSTLE CHURCH

Thank you to the many people who supported our Golden Anniversary Projects by your pledges and gifts.

There are two projects which still need to be completed:

(1) The landscaping to the right of the Religious Education Building

(2) The blacktop and repair of the old parking lot at

Our Lady of the Lake/Mt. Carmel.

Please call the Parish Office 845-225-2079 if you are interested in making a contribution towards

these last two projects.

Gospel: Luke 13:1-9 Jesus says that an individual's misfortune does not mean that their sins were greater than someone else's. He warns that without repenting, all sinners will meet the same end. He tells of a barren fig tree whose owner planned to cut it down. But a servant offered to give it special care for one year, and destroy it should it remain barren. This symbolizes God's patience toward us.

Letter from St. James Confirmation Candidates Each Confirmation Candidate was asked to write a personal letter indicating their desire to be confirmed. Please pray for these young people as they prepare for the Sacrament of Confirmation.

My name is Ayden A. Sanchez, a 13 year old boy who attends St. James the Apostle school. I enjoy and play sports such as football and basketball; I play as a center in basketball (because of my apparent height), and various positions in football such as a right tackle, line backer, etc. I also enjoy playing board and video games, hang out with my friends and family.. I come from a hardworking and very caring family that originates from Mexico (Dad), and Ireland (Mom). I am very accomplished in school (maybe because I like it), active in my community, and active in general. Being a Catholic is a very important part of my life. The Catholic faith is one that is accepting to everyone and brings out the best in the people that it teaches to. This is very important to me because it not only brings out the best in me, but it also helps me see the best in everyone I meet. There have been people in my life that have given me an example of being a good catholic. One of these people is my religion teacher Mr. M. Though his various Lenten journals and team presentations may have been a lot at the time, they have taught me more about me, what it means to be a Christian, and how others feel about our faith. Mr. M has taught me all about what it means to be a Christian and has set a great example to me. After 8 years of instruction of our faith, there are some questions that I would like to know about our faith are: 1. What does it take for a priest to become a bishop? Does he just have to make a big difference in his community and the church community? If so then do some priests not want to have the duties of a bishop? 2. When someone becomes the pope, do they inherit the duty of becoming “The Rock” of the church as Peter was, and is that why they make decisions in the name of the church? 3. Does every priest get the chance to have a trip to the Vatican and do they ever get to meet the pope? Going to Mass is a very important part of the Christian faith. Though my mass attendance used to be a bit low, I have improved upon it. I can promise that I will participate in mass regularly in preparation for confirmation. Confirmation is a big part of our Christian faith. Confirmation is a gift that spiritually increases/deepens our baptismal grace and imprints a permanent character on my soul (spiritually) and officially imparts the power for me to publically profess my faith (officially). This is a big step in my faith but I feel that I am ready because with the help of Mr. M, I understand the effects of confirmation fully, its history, and the new found role that it gives me in my faith and community. Confirmation is a very important sacrament to me because all of my family has received it and the new found responsibility that comes with it. I feel that I am ready to receive this very important sacrament. I not only fully understand it, but I feel like this is a big step in my faith and I want to embrace it.

The Cardinal’s Appeal Supports the Ministry of The Young Adult Outreach Office

On Friday, February 12, the Young Adult Outreach Office teamed up with the Tim Tebow Foundation and two young adults, Jacqueline Gistarb and Sean O’Hare, to host “A Night to Shine,” a prom for people with special needs. Over 100 people and over 180 volunteers gathered at St. Malachy Parish in Manhattan to celebrate. All guests walked down a red carpet and were greeted with cheers, enjoyed treatment from a ‘Glam Squad’, were assigned a buddy to dance with all night while enjoying music from a DJ and food from Cielo. The highlight of the night was every guest being crowned king and queen of prom. Tim Tebow came and greeted some volunteers! They hope to make this an annual event to serve and celebrate those with special needs.

Message from Emmanuel House

Carmel Rotary Club and Carmel High School's Rotary Interact Club are sponsoring their annual "Community Basketball Shoot-Out" on March 12th, 9am-12noon. The Shoot-Out offers groups and individuals a fun and engaging chance to raise funds for local nonprofit organizations, including Emmanuel House! We invite you as an individual or as a group (family, friends, church or ministry) to add Shooters of all ages to our team to help us raise much needed funds by shooting baskets on our behalf.

The Shoot-Out will be awarding prizes for twelve different age groups from toddlers to teens, as well as adults and seniors. Emmanuel House will also be supporting a friendly competition among individuals and groups shooting hoops on our behalf complete with special prizes for the individual and group with the most pledges. Each Shooter collects pledges (either flat donation or pledge per basket) on our behalf, and then shoots baskets for two minutes in the gymnasium of Carmel High School. The Pledge Sheet and Information/Instructions Sheet are available https://data.peachjar.com/user_images/14217849165087.pdf.

Prior to mailing received funds and sheets, we ask that all Shooters submit a copy of their pledge sheet(s), checks and monies to EHI to confirm their participation in the Shoot-Out and donations they received. This is the first year we are participating in this and we want to make sure that nothing falls between the cracks! All monies and checks (made out to "Carmel Rotary Club Foundation" with "Emmanuel House International" on the Memo Line) are to be mailed to the Carmel Rotary Club (Attn: Basketball Shoot-Out Chairman, PO Box 421, Carmel, NY 10512).
