Exercise, is good, at any ageAddressing common concerns about exercise after 50

Exercise is an essential ele-ment of a healthy lifestyle. Including exercise in your daily routine can lower your risk for diabetes, heart disease and stroke, and exercise can even sharpen mental acuity, reduce anxiety and improve mood. But as beneficial as exercise can be, many men and women, particularly men and women over the age of 50, who have not laced up their sneakers in years are hesitant to begin an exercise regimen for a variety of rea-sons, potentially putting their long-term health at risk.

According to the National Institute on Aging, the fol-lowing are a few points men

and women should know as they attempt to improve their physical fitness with a more active lifestyle.

• Exercise is safe even if you have not been physically active in a long time. Many older men and women worry that suddenly embracing physical fitness after years of inactivity may be detrimental to their health. But that’s only true if men and women don’t exercise caution at the outset of their routines. When beginning the routine, take things very slowly at first. When strength training, start off with very little weight so your muscles can grow acclimated to the motions and you can get the exercises down pat. As you grow more comfortable and your body starts to feel more up to the challenges of daily exercise, you can begin to gradually alter your cardio-

vascular and strength training workouts to make them more challenging.

• Exercise can make existing medical conditions more man-ageable. Men and women over the age of 50 who have preex-isting medical conditions are likely to find that exercise alle-viates rather than exacerbates their physical problems.

• Exercise reduces fatigue, so sitting around to preserve strength is not effective. Exercise improves strength and energy levels, so sitting on the sideline to preserve your strength is counterproduc-tive and could lead to serious medical problems. While get-ting adequate rest and giving your body ample time recover from physical activity is essen-tial, your body won’t benefit by avoiding exercise to pre-serve your strength. However,

even moderate physical activ-ity performed on a regular basis can reduce fatigue.

• No one is too old to exer-cise. It’s not uncommon for men and women in their gold-en years to think they are too old to exercise. Some may feel that their toned down work-outs cannot possibly be mak-ing much of an impact thanks to the physical limitations old age has put on their bodies, while others may think it’s unwise for someone in their 70s or 80s to be physically active. But no one is too old to exercise, as exercise helps the body stay strong and fit even when you can no longer max out on the bench press or squat hundreds of pounds. Scaling back your exercise routine will be necessary as you get older, but that does not mean you cannot still ben-efit from physical activity.

Burnaby Multicultural Society’s Elder Abuse Awareness program helps serve those seniors who gra-ciously served their respective communities, nurtured their families, helped educate their children and contributed to society over their working years.

Unfortunately, some of these seniors now find them-selves with little or no voice and suffer from elder abuse today. This abuse occurs in most cases at the hands of their own children, and in other cases by family mem-bers, friends, neighbours, landlords, caregivers or strangers in the community where they live.

With the onset of an aging baby boomer wave, the pro-jected population of people aged 65 and over living in the Metro Vancouver and Sea to Sky area by 2027 will be over 610,000. In other words, according to a report on CKNW, we are adding 1,200 new seniors to the 65+ age bracket day by day in Canada.

Despite these staggering demographic statistics, it is actually difficult to describe the extent of elder abuse in our society. It is estimated that more than 80 per cent of abuse may go unreported. With the senior population

expected to increase by 30 per cent in the next decade, elder abuse will probably increase proportionally if we do not become more proactive and put in place measures to com-bat it.

Burnaby Multicultural Society (BMS) has been pro-viding Elder Abuse Awareness to the community for preven-tion and outreach. There is a two-fold purpose of this campaign: to make the com-

munity at large aware that elder abuse exists in many ways, shapes and forms, and also to serve notice to cur-rent and would-be perpetra-tors that society will not turn a blind eye to elder abuse. Abusive actions like causing financial hardship on a senior, physically harming a senior or keeping a senior in isolation is unacceptable and will not be tolerated.

Since the launch of the

BMS’s campaign, there has been an overwhelming response. A number of clients have come forward to identify abuse and seek help.

Through the success of the campaign, BMS is at a turning point as a society and wants to take the next step and help seniors who’ve had the courage to speak up. Currently there is no direct government helpline for seniors and no single provin-cial ministry, similar to the Ministry of Children and Families that has the author-ity to investigate abuse cases.

BMS would like to see this change but for now has pledged to continue to empower people to speak up and voice concerns around elder abuse. In the absence of a direct authority charged with combating elder abuse, there are counsellors and resources available to assist those in distress.

There is a lot more abuse out there with more than 20 per cent of seniors living alone. Seniors, as well as oth-ers who witness abuse, are urged to “break the silence” and seek assistance.

The ultimate goal is “for all seniors to live with dignity and respect in a safe environ-ment.”

• Rana Dhatt is the CEO of Burnaby Multicultural Society.

Seniors are an important and growing part of our commu-nity. To ensure that seniors can continue to live independently in their own homes, the Better at Home Program provides non-medical support to assist with daily tasks.

Funded by the Government of B.C. and managed by the United Way of the Lower Mainland, Better at Home is offered in up to 68 communities in British Columbia.

Citizen Support Services is the lead agency in Burnaby, and in New Westminster the program is offered through Seniors Services Society.

The program offers rides to appointments and light house-keeping provided by home support agencies.

In Burnaby, MOSAIC is also a partner assisting in referrals from non-English speaking seniors.

To qualify for either of the services, you need to be a Burnaby or New Westminster resident, over 65 years of age and living independently with few supports.

Fees for Better at Home services are determined on a sliding scale, based on ability to pay.

For further information about the program please check out the website www.betterathome.ca or in Burnaby call Michele Wilson, coordinator of Burnaby Better at Home at 604-297-4877.

In New Westminster, call 604-520-6621 or email [email protected].

Nutrition is important for people of all ages, but it’s espe-cially important for men and women over the age of 50, who can dramatically improve their quality of life by eating a well-balanced diet filled with vitamins and nutrients.

Though that may seem like common sense, research has shown that men and women in this age group, who are often referred to as “Baby Boomers,” are not necessarily as healthy as they may seem.

A recent study found that baby boomers are less healthy than the generation that immediately preceded them, tending to be more likely to have higher levels of hypertension, diabetes and high cholesterol.

The following are a few ways men and women over 50 can alter their diets so their bodies are getting what they need to live long and healthy lives well into their golden years.

• Balance your diet. When changing your diet, be sure to include plenty of protein and carbohydrates. Protein maintains and rebuilds muscles, which is especially important for aging men and women who might find themselves unable to keep up with the physical demands of everyday life as well as they used to. Including ample low-fat protein, which can be found in fish, eggs and low-fat dairy among other foods, will aid in muscle recovery, benefitting aging athletes as well as those men and women over 50 who recently started exercising as a means to regaining their physical fitness.

Nutrition and aging go hand-in-hand

Carbohydrates are also an important part of a balanced diet, as they are a great source of energy that can help men and women stay active well past the age of 50. Carbohydrates found in fruits, grains and vegetables are the most beneficial, as these contain valuable vitamins, minerals and nutrients.

• Don’t denounce dairy. Dairy is a great source of calcium, which promotes strong bones and teeth. Men and women over the age of 50 want their bones to be as strong as possible because aging is one of the strongest risk factors for osteoporo-sis, a potentially debilitating medical condition in which loss of tissue causes bones to become brittle and fragile.

• Cut back on sodium intake. Cutting back on sodium intake can be very beneficial, especially for men and women over the age of 50, who are at greater risk of diabetes, hypertension and chronic kidney disease. Processed foods, soups, canned goods, salad dressings, condiments such as mustard and ketchup, and breakfast cereals are just a few of the many products that may contain alarming amounts of sodium. That’s important to note, as excess sodium increases blood pressure by holding excess fluid in the body. That excess fluid puts an added burden on the heart, potentially increasing a person’s risk of stroke, heart failure, osteoporosis, cancer, and kidney disease. The problem with cutting back on sodium is that salt is so often relied on to make foods taste better, and many people find salt-free foods bland. But the rewards of reducing sodium intake are so significant that it’s worth making the adjustment, espe-cially for men and women over the age of 50.

For the last 30 years, we have been the largest supplier of ostomy products in British Columbia

There is no such thing as “one size fits all” in ostomy care! Having regular leaks, skin irritations, or sores around your stoma is NEVER a normal part of

living with an ostomy!

As the only ostomy supplier with 9 ET/Ostomy Nurses working 6 days a week (by appointment), we believe that selling ostomy supplies is MUCH MORE

than selling you a box of product. It means giving you the RIGHT product that is RIGHT for YOU!

New patients are constantly amazed how much more relaxed, knowledgeable and “normal” they feel even after just one visit! We are part of your

ostomy support system for as long as you have your ostomy, whether you have recently had surgery or have had your ostomy for many years.

Ever feel like everyone is mumbling all the time?

By Dr. TeD VenemaContributed

By far the most com-mon hearing loss is called Presbycusis.

It sounds a bit like “Presbyterian,” doesn’t it? Presbyterian means “church of the elders.” “Presby” is Greek for the word “elders.” At about age 40, one has dif-ficulty seeing close up.

This is called Presbyopia, which means “vision of the elders.” Presbycusis means “hearing of the elders.”

At around 65, many people say they can hear, but just have trouble with clarity of speech.

The complaint will be “People are mumbling. I can hear, but just cannot always understand what’s being said.” Conversations one on one, and in quiet, won’t be too dif-ficult.

Hearing problems will occur however, when some-one is speaking from another room, or when the face of the talker cannot be seen, or when there is competing back-ground noise.

Why is this? With Presbycusis, hearing

for low-pitched (bass) sounds is typically better than hear-ing for high-pitched (treble) sounds.

The degree or amount of treble hearing loss does not have to be very much to cause difficulty.

In fact, the treble hearing loss is usually moderate in degree.

The diagram below shows a hearing test (audiogram) com-monly found with Presbycusis, and explains why treble hear-ing loss causes difficulty dis-

tinguishing words that sound alike.

The numbers along the top indicate pitch.

Bass on the left and treble is on the right.

In music, 125 is low C, 250 is middle C, 500 is high C.

As you look toward the right, the numbers continue to double.

Each time they do, the pitch goes up one octave.

Within the range of human hearing, music is relatively low in pitch. Going down the side of the audiogram are decibels of loudness. 0 means very soft, 50-60 is about the loud-ness of normal conversational speech, and 120 is very loud.

Hearing testing is done under headphones.

This way, the left and right ears are tested separately.

Presbycusis: The Trouble with Treble

It only takes a small amount of treble hearing loss to cause difficulty, says Dr. Ted Venema.

The X’s represent the softest decibel level it took for the left ear to just barely hear all of the octave tones; the O’s represent the same thing for the right ear.

With normal hearing, these would lie along the top, because with very few decibels, all the pitches from low to high would be heard.

Presbycusis usually shows fairly good hear-ing for bass sounds, with a moderate degree of hearing loss for the treble sounds.

Now look at the let-ters of speech across the audiogram. These are laid out as they would be with normal conver-sational loudness.

Note that the speech sounds on the left (all the vowels and some consonants) are louder, and also lower in pitch, than those on the right.

For someone with Presbycusis, these are quite easy to hear.

On the other hand, con-sonants like S, TH, F, K, T, CH, SH are not only higher in pitch, but also quite soft.

Someone with Presbycusis will have difficulty hearing these sounds.

So what? Well, every word has at

least one vowel.

In English, we have only 5-6 vowels (A, E, I, O, U, and sometimes Y).

There are thousands of words but they all have to share some 5-6 different vow-els.

If speech were currency, vowels would be cheap; they’d be the nickels.

Vowels tell only that speech is spoken.

Think about this list of words: Sat, Fat, Cat, Hat,

Chat; all of them share the vowel A; but those soft, high-pitched treble consonants determine what these words are.

People with Presbycusis have difficulty hearing high-pitched treble speech sounds and so they have trouble hear-ing which one of those words was said.

They’ll rely on their eyes and on the context surround-ing the words in question, to

help along in conversation. This can be rather tiring. Is

it any wonder that they feel out of it, and want to simply be left alone?

This is not living the quality of life that they deserve.

We should do something about it. The good thing here is that with good, treble-emphasis hearing aids, we can.
